Coniferous wood:
Definition:
Wood from trees that carry needles, rather than leaves. In contrast to broad-leaved
trees (hardwood).
There are much fewer coniferous types than hardwood types. Two thirds of the wood in Germany is
coniferous forest. Spruce is most widely spread. It is the most important timber and work wood.
Coniferous wood is normally softwood.

Heartwood:
This refers to numerous species of trees where the stem cross-section is no longer physiologically
active, and have a mostly dark, inner zone, which differs markedly from the outer, light sapwood. It is
produced by secondary metabolic processes of dying parenchyma in the inner sapwood.

Sapwood:
It is the young, physiologically active timber below the cambium(cells below the bark ) in the trunk of
a tree. Its capillaries bring water and nutrients to the foliage and store sugar and starch in the
parenchyma. With age, the sapwood tissue loses vitality and turns to heartwood in some species.
This process is called heartwood formation. Sapwood trees are those with delayed heartwood
formation. There are no colour and humidity differences between core and sapwood. Examples of
sapwood trees are birch, alder and maple. Their wood has character throughout the entire crosssectional sapwood.
