den die in Berlin geborene Filmdiva auf
Millionen von Menschen immer schon
ausübte, ungebrochen. "Forever Young"
betitelte daher sehr passend das
Hollywood Entertainment Museum die
erste und einzige Marlene Dietrich
Ausstellung in Nordamerika, die am 5.
September am Hollywood Boulevard
eröffnet wurde. Ausgestellt werden 120
Memorabilia des riesigen DietrichNachlasses, der insgesamt 3.000 textiFoto: Aus "Marlene Dietrich:
le Objekte, mehr als 10.000 Fotos, ca.
40 Koffer und 350.000 Briefe, Karten
und andere Schriftstücke umfasst. Diese faszinierende Sammlung, die Marlene
Dietrichs Lebensgeschichte und damit mehr als sieben Jahrzehnte deutsche
und deutsch-amerikanische Filmgeschichte repräsentiert, wurde am
24.Oktober 1993 vom Land Berlin und Filmmuseum Berlin für 5 Millionen US
Dollar erworben. Der Nachlass fand ein Zuhause als permanente Ausstellung in dem neu erbauten Museum am
Potsdamer Platz, welche anlässlich des 100. Geburtstages
von Marlene Dietrich im Jahr 2001 eröffnet wurde. Die
Ausstellungsstücke werden ständig ausgetauscht, um sie
so gut wie möglich vor Lichtund Lufteinwirkungen zu

Ausstellung. Marlene Dietrich, die
bereits als Kind Violine und Klavier
spielte
und
außer
einer
Schauspielausbildung an der berühmten Max-Reinhardt-Schule in Berlin
auch Gesangsunterricht erhielt, faszinierte oft allein durch ihre Stimme
und liess ihre Bewunderer mit
Stücken wie "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß
auf Liebe eingestellt" dahinschmelzen.
"Selbst wenn sie nichts anderes als
ihre Stimme hätte, könnte sie damit
Herzen brechen," sagte in diesem
Zusammenhang

Hemingway über Marlene Dietrich.
"Ich freue mich sehr," sagte Maria Riva, die Tochter der Dietrich, die mit ihren
Söhnen Paul und David aus Palm Springs zur Eröffnung nach Los Angeles
gekommen war, in ihrer temperamentvollen Ansprache "dass das Hollywood
Entertainment Museum sich zu dieser Ausstellung entschloß. Ich hätte mir
sehr gewünscht, dass der Nachlass meiner Mutter hier, in ihrer amerikanischen Heimat, ein permanentes Zuhause
gefunden hätte." Vergeblich jedoch hatte
die Familie Riva lange Zeit versucht, verschiedene Museen in USA für den DietrichNachlass zu interessieren, bis schließlich
das Filmmuseum in Berlin ein Angebot
machte.
"Wie erinnern Sie sich in erster Linie an Ihre
Großmutter Marlene Dietrich", fragten wir

war einfach immer für uns da. Sie war warm
und herzlich. Die Familie war ihr sehr wichtig. … Ich bin besonders stolz, dass sie als

Vertreterin

Filmindustrie
während
des
Krieges in Europa in der amerikanischen Armee gedient hat. Sie
hat nicht nur die amerikanischen
Soldaten besucht, sondern auch
die deutschen Kriegsgefangenen
und Verletzten, für die sie immer
"ihre Marlene" geblieben war."

"Meine Mutter hat sich nie von den
Deutschen abgewandt," so Marie Riva
im weiteren Gespräch mit GermanWorld.com. "Sie war nur absolut
gegen
Hitler
und
die
Nationalsozialisten und lehnte es ab,
für die Nazis Filme zu machen.
Deshalb ging sie nach Amerika und
nahm
auch
die
amerikanische
Staatsbürgerschaft an. Es hat meine
Mutter sehr gekränkt, als sie 1950 bei
einem Besuch in Berlin als Verräterin
beschimpft wurde."
Umso mehr hätte sich Marlene
Dietrich
sicherlich
über
die
Auszeichnung gefreut, die ihre Tochter
Maria Riva an ihrer Statt von Josef
Beck, stellvertretender Generalkonsul
der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in
Los Angeles, am 5. September 2002
entgegennehmen
durfte:

Verleihung der Ehrenbürgerschaft der
Stadt Berlin.

On October 7, 2002, the Goethe Institut
will show a new documentary with the title
"Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song" directed
by her grandson David Riva. The film is
based on hitherto unpublished material.
Her daughter Maria E. Riva wrote a very
captivating book on her mother simply titled "Marlene Dietrich". We also recommend: "Marlene Dietrich: Photographs and
memories" published by Alfred A. Knopf.

Another "Germantown" to be?
When you think
of Milwaukee, WI,
thoughts of Beer
and
Bratwurst
probably come to
your mind. For
those of you who
are not familiar with the city, it is one filled with German
Architecture, History and people. In a city like I have just
described, you would probably expect to find German
shops and restaurants if you were to visit there.
Unfortunately, despite its German culture and heritage,
Milwaukee does not fulfill the expectations of many of its
visitors who have envisioned a "Little Germany" in the
heart of Milwaukee and are disappointed to find that this
is not the case. While Milwaukee is a beautiful city that
has changed for the better over the years, it has the
potential to stray from the typical big city image and become very unique. Many cities have a Little Italy or a
Chinatown, but how many have a Little Germany? There
is no better place for it than in Milwaukee.
Commerce of the Midwest, now going into its seventh year,
this event grows bigger and bigger each year. What I have
just mentioned is the pattern that seems to have occurred
with other German shopping streets in the U.S. over the
years. Events like this will also draw a lot of people back
downtown on weekends who crave something different
and traditional. Milwaukee should capitalize on its German
Image. Even African-Americans in Milwaukee are familiar
with the word "Gemütlichkeit". Please don't allow the next
generation to forget that amazing word."

if (..) for example, the Chamber of Commerce in
Milwaukee could work together with the Mayor to create a
program to germanize the Old World Third Street the same
way the people of Germantown, Wisconsin, have in their
town," claims a recent visitor to Milwaukee, "Perhaps an

there like the "Christkindlmarkt" held each year at Daily

"Distinguished German-American of the Year for 2002". Dr. Tolzmann is the
curator of the German-Americana Collection and Director of German-American
Studies at the University of Cincinnati, where he has led the movement to create a national and international awareness of the important role played by
German-Americans to the American way of life. Dr. Tolzmann edits New
German-American Studies, a mono-graphic series; has served as New Yorker
Staats-Zeitung's Ohio editor; is the Zeitschrift für deutsch-amerikanische
Literatur editor, and is on the editorial board of the Yearbook for GermanAmerican Studies. He has frequently been called upon to represent GermanAmerican interests to the administrations in Washington, DC. He is the recipient of the Friendship Award of the Federal Republic of Germany and that
country's Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz). He has served for

"This exhibition is just about her art.
We were truly surprised when we got
to know about the controversial reactions she causes in Germany.
Riefenstahl is an outstanding artist,
her work is aesthetic and should be
appreciated", says co-owner Ken
Devlin. In February 2001 the
Fahey/Klein Gallery already had a
Riefenstahl show. Her photo documentation "Olympia" was her first exhibition in the U.S. that was extremely
successful, so the owner decided to
extend the show for the first time in
the gallery's history. "There were other
artists who got sponsored by different
dictators, she is not an individual
example. We do not understand what
exactly they accused her of," says
David Fahey. For sure the exhibition is
a success so far and worth a visit.
