MARKUS BenZ: People spend around a third of their life asleep.
The bedroom is an important part of our life – a source of strength
for the next day, a place where we can relax and go about our
daily rituals. Walter Knoll’s expertise lies in the shaping of living
spaces. Our products are an expression of our attitude to life – in
terms of what is representative, practical, useful and comfortable –
and beds are quite naturally a part of that.
Mit Jaan und Yuuto präsentiert Walter Knoll seine erste Bettenkollektion. Was war Ihr Designansatz, was Ihre Inspiration?
marKUs BenZ: Wir verstehen das Bett als Objekt im Raum.
Inspiriert von meinen Reisen, insbesondere von Lodges in Afrika,
betrachten wir das Bett als architektonisches Element: zentral
im Raum positioniert, offen für verschiedene Beziehungen – zur
Ankleide, zum Bad, zum Ausblick. Denn das Bett ist eben nicht
nur zum Schlafen da. Wir wollen kuscheln, lümmeln, faulenzen,
Mails beantworten, im Internet surfen, lesen, arbeiten, diskutieren, telefonieren, schreiben, zeichnen, sitzen und uns ankleiden. Wir nutzen das Schlafzimmer als Lebensraum – für die
Rituale des Alltags.
With Jaan and Yuuto, Walter Knoll is presenting its first
bed collection. What was your approach in the design, your
inspiration?
MARKUS BenZ: We see the bed as an object in a room. Inspired
by journeys, particularly by impressions of lodges in Africa,
we view the bed as an architectural element: positioned centrally
within a room, open to a whole range of possible connections –
to our wardrobes, the bathroom, or quite simply just a look out of
the window. Because a bed is not just there to be slept on. We
want to snuggle up, lounge around, laze about, answer our mails,
surf the net, read, work, discuss, phone, write, draw, sit and get
dressed. We use the bedroom as a living space – for the rituals of
our everyday lives.

And your new beds support this lifestyle?
MARKUS BenZ: Yes, Jaan and Yuuto use the space in all directions –
all 360°. Elegant upholstered beds, freely positioned in a room,
complemented by boards, upholstered benches, small tables and
escritoires – just as useful as they are special. The timeless form,
the exceptional comfort and the outstanding design are a matter
of course. So very typical of Walter Knoll.
Wie sah der Designprozess aus? Gab es Besonderheiten bei
der Entwicklung?
marKUs BenZ: Dem eigentlichen Entwicklungsprozess dieser
Betten ging eine intensive Diskussion voraus, was das geeignete Schlafsystem sei. Wir haben uns für Boxspring entschieden –
aufgrund seiner besonderen Bequemlichkeit, der optimalen Körperstützung und dem ausgezeichneten Schlafklima. Dies wiederum beeinflusste das Design. Beide Betten sind so gestaltet,
dass die Luft frei um das Bett zirkulieren kann. Völlig selbstverständlich, lässig und leicht wie im Design von Jaan, klassisch
und elegant wie bei Yuuto.
What shape did the design process take? Was there anything
particularly special about development?
MARKUS BenZ: The actual development process for these beds
was preceded by intense, in-depth discussion regarding what
the most suitable sleeping system was. We ultimately went for box
spring – because of its particular comfort, perfect body support
and excellent sleeping climate. That in turn had an influence on the
design. Both beds are designed so that the air can circulate freely
around the bed. Completely naturally, casually and lightly as in the
design of Jaan, classically and elegantly as in Yuuto.

thing about the Jaan bed is its charmingly elegant allure. The
designers made the upholstered bed float: generous lounging
spaces on a delicate framework – seemingly weightless, Jaan
shapes the room. Supremely soft and coolly casual. Poetry in
the form of clean lines. Supple leather or natural fabrics form the
headboard and upholstered framework. Additional comfort is
provided by the matt shimmering servers and the board in black
glass or striking saddle leather. High-class details, elaborately
and carefully crafted. A wonderful place for all those essentials –
your favourite book, your watch, a reading lamp. As obvious
as it is special.

Gutes Design beginnt mit einer guten Idee. So wie Yuuto. Dieses
Polsterbett inszeniert die Stätte des Schlafens. Frei im Raum
kommt es dem modernen Leben entgegen: offen für verschiedene
Beziehungen – zur Ankleide, zum Bad, zur Aussicht – flexibel für

you sleep. Standing freely in a room, it accommodates modern

wardrobes, the bathroom, the panorama – flexible for the rituals
of our private life. An upholstered bed. Spaciously designed
with fine materials. Sensuousness and sheer beauty. But this bed
is more: Yuuto shapes the room. The upholstered bench naturally

is like floating on a cloud. The sleeping system was developed by
SCHRAMM Werkstätten – bed manufactory with more than 90 years
experience in producing high quality mattresses and bedroom
products.

The sleeping system for Walter Knoll is based on the box-spring
principle: a slim-line, supporting base mattress, a comfortable,
soft top mattress and, optionally, soft padding provided by the
topper.
Endlos gewickelte Federn gestalten die Untermatratze. Die Obermatratze ist mit handgefertigten Taschenfederkernen aus
besonders vergüteten Federn ausgestattet und in traditioneller
Quastenheftung fixiert. Die Naturmaterialien Schafschurwolle
und Baumwolle unterstützen die Bequemlichkeit. Für den individuellen Schlafkomfort stehen drei unterschiedliche Federkraftausführungen zur Wahl. Der leichte, atmungsaktive Topper

Continuously coiled springs shape the base mattress. The top
mattress features hand-made pocket springs made from specially
heat-tempered springs and traditionally stapled with tassels. The
natural materials sheep’s wool and cotton support the comfort.
There are three different spring tensions to ensure individual sleeping comfort. The lightweight, breathable topper is an optional
addition to the sleeping system.

acacias. The changing incidence of light makes the veldt
seem never-ending. In the towns, a fragrant air and the right
colours of the spices at the bazaar, the colour transitions on
the walls plastered by hand in the alleyways, dust and glimmering
heat, shimmering mirages and magnificent orchid gardens.
The Walter Knoll carpets were developed in collaboration with
fabric designer Helmut Scheufele and are inspired by the
wealth of shapes and colours in Africa. They take their strength
from the source of creativity of that continent, transposed
into valuable, timeless design. The delicate shades of pink are
reminiscent of reflections at sunset, where suddenly a green
thread twinkles in a sea of warm sand colours. Individual carpet
pictures full of naturalness and elegance.

Im Zusammenspiel der Farben entfaltet Mpando seinen besonderen Charme. Ein grüner und ein orangefarbener
Streifen erheben sich im Meer unterschiedlicher Couleurs –
intensiv und ausdrucksstark.
Schönheit liegt in der Harmonie der Dinge. Sonnengezeichnet wie die Erde Afrikas überzeugt Limbika durch
den Einklang seiner Farben. Erdige Naturtöne gestalten
den Fond, Orange setzt Farbakzente.
The wool for Kuruka comes from black and from white
sheep. Here and there, there is a spot of orange and turquoise in silk. The high proportion of these fine fabric fibres
guarantees a gentle shimmer.
Salama works thanks to its harmonious colours. The materials are also balanced out: the deep-pile carpet consists of virtually equal proportions of wool from the Tibetan highlands,
nettle fibres and silk.
Mpando reveals its particular charm in the interaction of
the colours. A green stripe and an orange stripe rise from a
sea of different colours – intensive and expressive.
Beauty is in the harmony of things. Like the soil in Africa,
Limbika shows traces of the sun in a harmonious mix of
colours. Natural earthy tones set the scene, colour accents
are provided in orange.
