European Shock Society Newsletter Winter 2009/2010 Latest news from YOUR society • Welcome to the new council members - Markus Huber-Lang (Germany), Yngvar Gundersen (Norway), Bruno Levy (France) • Many thanks to Chris Thiemermann for his outstanding work as President of the Society, to Monty Mython for his outstanding work as General Secretary and to the council members Soheyl Bahrami and Eddy Neugebauer whose term expired for their excellent support. • Congratulations to Soheyl Bahrami who is our new President-Elect • Many thanks to Marcin Osuchowski for his efforts in coordinating the Junior ESS member affairs task force • For further information, the minutes of the General Assembly (September 25, 2009, Lisbon, Portugal) are attached • Message from the President of the European Shock Society, Salvatore Cuzzocrea: Dear Colleagues and Friends, to the beginning of my biennial order as President of the ESS, first of all I want to address a warm regard to all members hoping that they become more numerous, especially young people, and feel more involved in the activity of the Society. I'm sorry if in these months I have been not present for serious health problems, as you all know, but now I'm back to my work activities and I am ready for this new adventure. To the beginning of a new period of activity of the Society, it requires reflection on the role of ESS, especially on services that this Society and its board offer to Members. It is important to take a significant and appropriate role to the EES and to its potential in the scientific, social and political scenery. In recent years, thanks to the Presidents who preceded me and to simplicity of information exchange through internet and e-mail, ESS has grown not only numerically, but has increased its own activities and is closer to its members. To better support the community and respond to expressed member needs, the Society’s professional development programming is evolving as well. New strategies and structures were put in place to strengthen and coordinate professional development and higher education activities. These efforts will enable ESS to better serve our growing and increasingly diverse field. Some recent data offer a snapshot of ESS’s changing composition: International members —and especially international student members — are the fastest growing segment of membership. We ask to the members an active participation in Society, collaborating with enthusiasm to the initiatives and working closely with the Executive Board with suggestions aimed at improving the management of the Society. I conclude these brief reflections with the hope of being able to implement what is proposed and sure to make a supreme effort. A dear greeting to all the members, to the components of the previous Directive Council and best wishes to new Directors and President-Elect Sincerely, Salvatore Cuzzocrea The Junior European Shock Society Member Affairs (JESSMA) task force: My name is Marcin Osuchowski, a senior post-doc at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Clinical and Experimental Traumatology in Vienna. At the 2008 General ESS Assembly in Cologne, I was appointed coordinator of the newly created junior ESS member-related affairs task force. Given that junior ESS members are critical to the existence and expansion of the ESS society, the general goal of JESSMA is to facilitate new (scientific and social) activities that are exclusively aimed at, and to the benefit of, all junior members of ESS. As you may have noticed, the recent 2009 bi-annual ESS meeting in Lisbon introduced two new events to its usual schedule: the Junior Poster Workshop and the Junior Social Mixer. The Poster Workshop was designed to shine the spotlight on the scientific efforts of junior ESS members: randomly selected junior researchers presented their poster data in the form of an “adult” 10min. oral presentation in front of a seasoned (and greenhorn) audience. This year, the one-hour workshop featured five interesting, wide-topic talks by presenters from four different countries. The workshop was followed by the Junior Mixer on the last day of the meeting: there were over twenty participants, all bottles were emptied and subsequent feedback was very favourable. Unfortunately, both events were somewhat under-advertised and hence they did not receive the desired attention and attendance. Yet, all beginnings are hard and we intend to rapidly improve execution of these events, hopefully scheduling additional ones, once the interest and participation of junior ESS members has grown. With the cheerful support of the current ESS President Prof. Salvatore Cuzzocrea, we are dedicated to putting both of the above mentioned events in the meeting program permanently. If you come to the 14th ESS meeting in Messina, Italy, please drop by and cheer on the future top minds of the ESS! At the same time, do not try to sneak into the Junior Social Mixer… Best regards and see you all in Italy!
