Newsletter Title THE BRITTANY BUGLE JULY 2010 Volume 1, Issue 4 PRESIDENT: JERRY ROSENBERG [email protected] VICE-PRESIDENT: TOM CLARE [email protected] SECRETARY/TREASURER: KAREN NELSEN [email protected] Another Training Day Success~ The Training Day, originally slated to be held at Scholz Lake, was re-located to the site at Parks that we used last month. The fire danger has been rated as “extreme” and the Forest Service closed the grounds. The stormy weather held off until we were finished with our field work. We appreciate all the help received from our friends with the NAGSP Club. What was so exciting was the number of folks with Brittanys that came. We were happy to welcome new member, Wayne Moore, and his dog Kody. GRAND CANYON BRITTANY CLUB “GETTING TO KNOW YOU” Meet Jim Cassara “Dee” Karen Nelsen Secretary/Treasurer P.O. Box 6390 Chino Valley, AZ 86323 928-636-9939 email: [email protected] UPCOMING EVENTS Jim Cassara and “Topper-Lyn’s United Ranger” (Ranger to everyone) live in Cave Creek. Ranger is a roan colored French Brittany that Jim got from Montana at the age of 12 weeks. Jim was looking for a Brit that would hunt, hunt, and hunt some more! At the time he got Ranger, he was unaware of any “American” Brittanys that were bred strictly for the field. During Ranger’s first year, Jim worked on socialization and basic commands. Then more serious field training began. He worked on Ranger’s being steady to flush, wing, shot and fall. Ranger was “force broke” to retrieve on land and water. He also learned to honor another dog’s point. The goal was to have a finished dog that would perform well in the field as well as in hunt tests and field trials. From the looks of things, Jim and Ranger have met their goals! Jim joined the Grand Canyon NAVHDA chapter, and the Arizona Pointing Dog Club in 2003. In the off-season, Jim and Ranger work on training, conditioning and stamina. Ranger is one of the top ranked dogs in the AZPDC. Jim reports that Ranger is a great house dog with a great temperament. They’ve hunted Gambels, Mearns, pheasant, ruffled grouse, ducks, and even dove from a kayak. Ranger will have a new playmate coming in late August. Another French Brittany...why? Because Jim’s wife Jeanne loves the black noses! August 6-7—The Big one! Garage, Yard Rummage Sale September 11—Snake Avoidance Clinic September 18-19—Prescott Kennel Club Show We’re on the Web! www.grandcanyonbrittanyclub.org Welcome New Members Joining us in this jubilant month of July are: Jim Cassara 4351 E. The flyers will be in PDF format so that they are easily downloadable. It’s especially important that we get the notice out to as many dog owners as possible. Fundraisers—Rummage Sale & Snake Avoidance Clinic At the recent meeting, the Board decided to move the date of the “Fundraising” Yard/Rummage/Garage Sale from the originally planned September to August! The purpose of both of our fundraisers is to raise the funds (obviously) for club insurance, which is needed in order to hold field events. YARD SALE Our first effort will be a giant sale at Karen’s place in Paulden. It may be a little far, but will be well worth the trip. We’ve collected many items donated by our GSP friends, club members, and Karen’s neighbors. It will be held August 6-7 (Friday/Saturday) from 8AM til 3PM. Members are encouraged to donate and attend the event. A flyer will be sent to the membership. SNAKE AVOIDANCE CLINIC The second event is very exciting. Noted professional dog trainer in the Chino Valley area, Gene Wullkotte, has offered to hold a “snake avoidance clinic.” We are offering an “early registration discount” at a price that is very attractive. Registration at the event is slightly higher. This will be held at Blankenburg Kennels in Chino Valley on September 11 from 9AM to 11AM. All information is on the flyer. Please pass this information on to members of other clubs we all belong to. It’s time to re-fresh and re-teach your dog! They’re all not this harmless!
