On the slopes of the Oder
near Stolpe a fortification was
errected in the 12th century,
of which only the tower is still
standing. With mighty fivemetre high walls it is among
the strongest keeps in Germany. From the Stolper tower
there is a broad view of the
Oder Valley.
The work of the rangers is varied and includes: cooperating in species protection
programmes, monitoring, environmental
education and last but not least guided
tours for nature tourists. The National
Park House with its exhibition on the
nature and landscape in Criewn Castle
(Schloss Criewen) is also maintained by
the rangers. The highlight of every tour
is the large Oder Aquarium.

Between the middle of July and the middle of
November, a guided canoe tour is recommended
in order to soak up the fascinating water world
of the Lower Oder Valley. Guided tours, excursions or nature walks are on offer almost every
weekend.

The quiet, expanse and
isolation of the Lower Oder
Valley can be experienced
on foot or better still by bike
with more than 120 kilometres of paths across the
dykes. The Polish Landscape
Preservation Parks can be
reached from Schwedt and
Mescherin.
