Düsseldorf – a city on the move!
Sport traditionally has a high profile in the state capital.
Besides big and small sporting events, professional sports, and
the construction, running and maintenance of sports facilities,
recreational sport also plays an important role in Düsseldorf.
In 360 sports clubs, around 150,000 club members can pursue
their favourite sport. Over 150 sports grounds, over 200 sports
halls, five sports marinas, a public golf course and various other
spaces for sport are available in the state capital. These also
include the 16 district sports grounds, the Arena Sportpark and
the ice stadium, which is run by the City of Düsseldorf.
Furthermore, the Municipal Sports Office organises a wide
variety of events, focused above all on promoting emerging
young talent. All this is outlined in this flyer and will help you
to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Jogging routes
Are you looking for a jogging route? Düsseldorf has many
to choose from. You can find information on some of the
routes on the website of the Municipal Sports Office.
A particularly pleasant route through the city centre has been
fully signposted by the city authorities. The route goes along
the Rhine and over various Rhine bridges. It is fully lit, and
can therefore be used at any time of day. Joggers can choose
between two route variations:
æ Little bridge lap
route length approx. 4 kilometres,
over the bridges Kniebrücke and Oberkassler Brücke.
æ Big bridge lap
route length approx. 8 kilometres,
over the bridges Kniebrücke and Theodor-Heuss-Brücke.
The start and end of both routes is the Apollo-Platz on the
banks of the Rhine. There you will find a map of both routes.
Along each of the routes there are signposts every 500 metres
so that you can keep tabs on how far you have run.
You can find a map of this jogging route
and other suggestions at:

The Municipal Sports Office not only allocates sports
facilities, it also offers diverse sport- and exercise-related
events and programmes.
Düsseldorf Model for the Promotion of Physical Activity,
Sport and Talent
The goal of the Düsseldorf model is to improve the physical
fitness and promote the sporting talent of Düsseldorf ’s children
– because physical activity and sport are vital for our physical,
mental and emotional development.
In light of this, we implement the following measures:
Once a year, the physical fitness and sporting performance of
all children in the 2nd grade (CHECK!) and all children in
the 5th grade (ReCHECK!) is tested. Afterwards, the parents
receive a personal evaluation and recommendations of how to
promote their children’s physical fitness.
As a follow-up to these checks, the following events take
place every year:
Talentiade (Talent Scouting)
Selection events for the most talented children of the CHECK!
Tag der Talente (Talent Day)
Selection events for the most talented children of the
ReCHECK!
Kids in Action
A sport information fair with attractive
participatory events for Düsseldorf
children and families.

Groups for promoting physical activity
In small groups of school pupils, children have the opportunity
to improve their physical fitness and motor skills. Research by
the Düsseldorf Model show how important it is to encourage
children from a young age. That’s why the Municipal Sports
Office is extending its range of activities to kindergarten-age
children and is counteracting the high number of non-swimmers
among primary school children with swimming projects for 4 to
6 year olds.

Running events
Professional sports and sporting events
Besides the attractive jogging routes, there are also many
running events for ambitious runners in Düsseldorf. The
particular appeal of these races is that they incorporate
everyone from talented young runners to fun-runners to
professional athletes. It is also possible to participate without
being a member of a sports club. Over the course of a year
there are more than a dozen races for all ages and abilities.
The biggest and most well-known one is the Metro Group
Marathon.
The sporting city of Düsseldorf not only offers a wide range
of sporting options, it is also home to professional sport with
many Bundesliga teams. What’s more, many sporting events
take place in Düsseldorf. You can find dates and further
information on the website of the Düsseldorf Congress, Sport
and Event Sport GmbH.

You can find dates and further information on the running
events at

Skating night
Another event that has become firmly established in
Düsseldorf ’s event calendar is the Skating Night. On nine
Thursdays a year, different routes in the city are blocked off for
in-line skaters and roller skaters.
