Bald zwanzig Jahre ist es her, dass der legendäre Gestalter Dieter Rams
seine zehn Prinzipien für gutes Design formuliert hat. Und doch sind sie
heute immer noch so aktuell wie damals. Sie stehen für vieles, was auch
unsere Schalter und Systeme auszeichnet: Eine zeitlose, klassische
Gestaltung. Konsequente Funktionalität. Ein innovatives Innenleben in
Kombination mit dezentem Äußeren, das auch nach Jahren nichts von
seinem ästhetischen Wert einbüßt.
Das erklärt, warum Schalter und Systeme von Berker heute in vielen
bemerkenswerten Gebäuden in aller Welt zu finden sind. Es erklärt auch,
warum wir und unsere Produkte in den letzten Jahren mit zahlreichen
Designpreisen ausgezeichnet worden sind. Und auch mit unseren Produkt­

It will soon be twenty years since legendary designer Dieter Rams
formulated his ten principles for good design. And they’re as relevant today
as they were then. They describe many of the things that make our
switches and systems stand out: timeless, classic design; functionality
without com­p romise; an innovative inner life combined with a discreet
external appearance that loses none of its aesthetic value
even after years.
That explains why switches and systems from Berker are to be found
today in many notable buildings around the world. It also explains why we
and our products have repeatedly won design prizes in recent years.
And with our new products in 2010 we remain true to our principle of
beautiful and at the same time practical design. One example is our new,
thoroughly optimised socket outlet. Another is our aesthetic Berker Comfort
Center 9˝ touch panel, which is as intuitive to use as an iPhone, with

bedeutet das eigentlich? Zwei ambitionierte Neubauprojekte zeigen
beispielhaft, wie sich Green Building mit Wirtschaftlichkeit und
schöner Form verbinden lässt.

Energieeffizienz / energy efficiency
Green is the new gold
Sustainability is a sought-after quality for more and more
properties. But what does it actually mean? Here two ambitious
new building projects reveal how Green Building can be combined
with both economic efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
Der Name ist Programm: „The George“ klingt britisch, ist unübersehbar britisch
inspiriert und verwöhnt seine Gäste mit Komfort im Stil eines modernen britischen Clubs. Mit dieser modern Britishness hat sich das Hotel im Hamburger
Szenestadtteil St. Georg schnell zu einer der hipsten Herbergen der Hansestadt entwickelt. „Wir bedienen gewisse Klischees, brechen sie jedoch gleichzeitig auf“, sagt Kai Hollmann, der Erfinder und Eigner des Hotels. Ablesen
lassen sich die Zitate beispielsweise an der gutbestückten Bibliothek sowie
den britischen Wandfarben und Tapeten in den 118 Hotelzimmern und sieben
Suiten. Ausgestattet sind sie mit hochwertigen Markenprodukten wie hans­
grohe-Armaturen, Bose-Audiotechnik und Schaltern von Berker.
Was die Gäste des „George“ nicht sehen (dafür aber umso angenehmer
spüren), ist das ausgeklügelte Energiekonzept des Hotels. Entworfen wurde
es von der Ingenieurgemeinschaft Ridder Meyn Nuckel aus Norderstedt, die
den Hotelbau in eine hochwertige Fassade mit dreifachverglasten Fenstern
packte und damit von vornherein optimal vor Hitze wie Kälte schützte.
Beheizt wird er mit einer energieeffizienten Wärmepumpe, die aus der
Außenluft maximale Heizleistung generiert und damit effektiver, CO 2 -ärmer
und reaktionsschneller ist als andere Heizsysteme. Checkt ein Gast unten
am Empfang ein, wird von dort die Anlage gestartet, sodass der Gast wenige
Minuten später bereits ein wohl temperiertes Zimmer betritt. Dennoch liegt der
Energieverbrauch im „The George“ lediglich bei 55 kWh pro Quadratmeter –
und damit deutlich unter den Werten konventioneller Gewerbeimmobilien.
Insgesamt schlucken Europas Immobilien rund 40 Prozent des Endenergieverbrauchs – das sind zehn Prozent mehr, als alle PKWs, Lastwagen, Bahnen
und Flugzeuge zusammengenommen verbrauchen. Ihr Energiehunger belastet
nicht nur Klima und Umwelt, sondern bei steigenden Energiepreisen auch die
Kassen jener, die diese Gebäude bewohnen und bewirtschaften.

„Green Building“ ist der Trend der Stunde. Ist es auch mehr als ein Trend?
Selbstverständlich. Energieeffizientes Planen und Bauen ist heute bei fast jedem unserer Projekte ein Thema.
Dafür sorgt auch die Energieeinsparverordnung, die den energetischen Rahmen für Gebäude stetig enger steckt.
Bei Beleuchtung, Heizung und Lüftung planen wir grundsätzlich möglichst energieeffizient.
Wie sah Ihr Energiekonzept für „The George“ aus?
Gemeinsam mit der Firma Daikin haben wir für „The George“ ein Variable Refrigerant Volume-Kleinkältesystem
entwickelt, das in der deutschen Hotellerie ziemlich einzigartig sein dürfte. Zum einen ist es perfekt der Gebäude­
struktur angepasst, die eine Versorgung auf kleinteiligen Flächen und Maßen erforderte. Anstelle der üblichen
Kältemaschine und Rückkühlwerk auf dem Dach haben wir daher im „The George“ ein platzsparendes Direktverdampfungssystem eingesetzt. Neben der Kühlung lässt sich das System aber auch wie eine Wärmepumpe zur
Beheizung der Hotelzimmer einsetzen. Dadurch erreichen wir einen relativ guten Energieverbrauchswert von
durchschnittlich 55 kWh pro Quadratmeter.
Ist mit solchen Werten das Thema Energieeffizienz ausgereizt?
Sicher nicht. Künftig werden Gebäude zusehends als Passivhäuser ausgelegt werden und damit noch energiesparender arbeiten. Allerdings erfordern Passivhäuser eine deutlich stärkere Dämmung, was bei größeren Projekten
einen erheblichen Kostenfaktor darstellt. Wie alles beim Bau muss auch das Thema Energieeffizienz gegen andere
Faktoren abgewogen werden. Aber mit steigenden Energiepreisen dürfte es künftig stetig stärker ins Gewicht fallen.
Warmer Empfang: Während Gäste im „The George“ einchecken, wird von der Rezeption aus die Klimatisierung ihres Zimmers gestartet.
Möglich macht’s eine ebenso reaktionsstarke wie effiziente Wärmepumpe.

Viele Architekten und Projektentwickler haben deshalb ein buchstäblich
nachhaltiges Vermarktungsargument für sich entdeckt: „Grünes“ Bauen.
Ablesen lässt sich der Boom unter anderem an der steilen Karriere der USamerikanischen „Green Building Conference“: Diese Fachtagung, vor gut
zehn Jahren erstmals veranstaltet, lockte damals ein Häuflein von ganzen
70 Architekten an. Bei der jüngsten Konferenz drängelten sich 35.000
Besucher, um über Gebäudeeffizienz, k-Werte und alternative Energie ­
konzepte zu diskutieren. Und in Deutschland hat sich vor zwei Jahren die
„Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen“ (DGNB) etabliert, die
mittlerweile die ersten, besonders nachhaltigen Immobilien mit ihrem
DGNB-Zertifikat ausgezeichnet hat.
„Grün ist Gold wert“, jubelt das Anlegermagazin „Barron’s“, denn „grüne“
Gebäude werden über Jahre hinweg konkurrenzlos sein. In Chicago
beispielsweise konnte der Büroturm 111 South Wacker Drive, der sich mit
einem „grünen“ Gebäuderating schmücken darf, wenige Monate nach
Fertigstellung komplett vermietet verkauft werden – und das, während in der
Nachbarschaft 18 Prozent der Büroflächen leer stehen. Ein paar Straßenecken weiter ging der ebenfalls als „nachhaltig“ ausgezeichnete Komplex
One South Dearborn Street mit einem Profit von 144 Millionen Dollar an
seinen Neubesitzer. „Wer ein grünes Zertifikat an seine Pforten heften kann,
hat keine Vermietungsschwierigkeiten und steigt in die Champions League
der Immobilienszene auf“, konstatiert die Immobilienzeitschrift „Expo Real
Magazin“. Dabei sind es primär gar nicht die Immobilienbesitzer, die auf
Energieeffizienz achten. „Der größte Treiber ist die Nutzerseite“, stellt Ingo
Beenen fest, Leiter Strategic Consulting beim Immobiliendienstleister Jones
Lang LaSalle. „Viele der größten und wirtschaftlich stärksten Unternehmen
werden künftig nur noch Flächen anmieten, die eine hohe Nachhaltigkeitsqualität und entsprechende Zertifizierung aufweisen.“
Bei privaten Bauherren hingegen muss man die Begeisterung mitunter
erst noch wecken. Der Architekt Daniel Sauter beispielsweise konstruiert seit
einem Dutzend Jahren Privathäuser und Wohnanlagen, die pur, reduziert
und ultramodern anmuten und mit herkömmlicher „Öko-Architektur“ wenig
zu tun haben. Und dennoch sind sie bis ins Detail nachhaltig gestaltet. In
Bodenseenähe beispielsweise hat der 46-jährige Architekt, der mit seinem
Bregenzer Fünf-Mitarbeiter-Büro bereits über 100 Projekte verwirklicht
hat, ein Einfamilienhaus gebaut, das selbst in puncto Baumaterialien und
Recyclingfähigkeit vorbildlich wirkt. So besteht die Konstruktion des
270-qm-Hauses aus dem Holz von Weißtannen, die keine fünf Kilometer
entfernt aufgezogen und gefällt worden waren. Dank Dreifachverglasung,
Nord-Süd-Ausrichtung, Solaranlage und leistungsstarkem Holzofen dürften
die Bewohner des Hauses mit 70 % weniger fossilen Brennstoffen auskommen als ihre konventionell wohnenden Nachbarn. Die Bauherrenschaft,
erinnert Sauter, „ließ sich denn auch nach nachhaltigen Argumenten
vom energieeffizienten Bauen überzeugen. Wir haben da überhaupt keinen
missionarischen Anspruch. Aber die ökonomischen wie ökologischen
Vorteile sind einfach beeindruckend.“
Wie beeindruckend die Verbrauchswerte sind, kann Sauters Hausherr

3 questions for Frank Lüddecke, of RMN Ingenieure GmbH,
project manager of architectural engineering for “The George”, Hamburg
“Green Building” is definitely the flavour of the month.
But is it more than just a trend?
Why of course it is. Energy efficient planning and building is an issue with almost all of our projects. This is also
ensured by the German Energy Saving Regulation that is constantly marking out the energy framework for buildings in
narrower terms. So we plan our lighting, heating and air conditioning to be as energy efficient as possible.
What did the energy plan for “The George” look like?
For “The George” we developed a variable refrigerant volume small cooling system together with the company
Daikin – something that is fairly unique in the German hotel industry. It suits the structure of the building perfectly,
which had to be accommodated within small-scale surfaces and parameters. For this reason, instead of the standard
refrigeration unit and heat exchange device on the roof, we have deployed a space-saving direct damping system at
“The George”. As well as for cooling, the system can also be deployed like a heat pump for heating the hotel rooms.
In this way we achieve a relatively good energy consumption value of an average 55 kWh per square metre.
Has the issue of energy efficiency been completely
addressed with such values?
No, of course not. In future, buildings will noticeably be designed as low-energy buildings and will work in ways
that save even more energy. In any case, low-energy buildings will demand far more efficient insulation, which will
be a considerable cost factor in larger projects. Just like everything in the construction industry, the issue of
energy efficiency has to be weighed up against other factors; however, with increasing energy prices, it should
carry a great deal more weight in future.

Energieeffizienz / energy efficiency
The name says it all: “The George” sounds British, is unmistakably British
inspired and pampers its guests with all the comfort and style of a modern
British club. With this modern Britishness this hotel in the fashionable
St. Georg district of Hamburg has developed itself into one of the hippest
hostelries in this Hanseatic city. “We do exploit certain clichés,” says Kai
Hollmann, the originator and owner of the hotel, “yet, at the same time,
we also go beyond them.” This can be deduced from the quotations, for
example, in the well-stocked library as well as the British paint colours on
the wall and the wallpaper in the 118 hotel rooms and seven suites. They
are furnished with top-quality branded products such as hans grohe taps,
Bose audio technology and switches from Berker.
What the guests at “The George” don’t see (which makes it all the more
agreeable to feel), is the strikingly clever energy management in the hotel.
It was developed by the Ridder Meyn Nuckel engineers cooperative in
Norderstedt, near Hamburg, who enveloped the hotel construction in a
top-quality facade with triple-glazed windows – from the very beginning
providing the best protection from freezing and hot temperatures. It is
heated with an energy-efficient heat pump that generates the maximum
heat performance from the outside air and, in the process, is more effective,
emits less CO 2 and reacts faster than other heating systems. When a
guest checks in at reception, the equipment is started from there, in time
for the guest to enter an agreeably well-conditioned room a few minutes
later. Yet the energy consumption at “The George” is only 55 kWh per
square metre – and consequently significantly below the values for con­
ventional commercial buildings.
The buildings in Europe swallow up around 40 per cent altogether of our
final energy consumption – that is ten per cent more than all cars, lorries,
trains and planes consume when taken together. Not only does their hunger
for energy have a negative effect on the climate and the environment,
increasing energy prices also affect the funds of those who occupy and
manage these buildings.

Bei einem Otto Normalverbraucher, der sich sein Einfamilienhaus vom Munde abspart, bleibt für energieeffiziente
Systeme wenig Spielraum. Ganz anders ist es bei solventeren Einfamilienhaus-Bauherren, und bei Büro- oder
Gewerbebauten sowieso. Überzeugungsarbeit muss man aber in jedem Fall leisten.
Wie überzeugen Sie Ihre Kunden?
Bei Büroimmobilien, Lager- oder Fertigungshallen sind die Bewirtschaftungskosten ein gravierender Faktor,
und die lassen sich mit intelligenten Systemen deutlich senken. Gewerbliche Bauherren sind daher naturgemäß
sehr offen fürs Thema Energieeffizienz. Privaten Bauherren hingegen muss man meist erst einmal aufzeigen,
was sich alles erreichen lässt. Aber es geht.
ErschlieSSen sich mit dem Thema Energieeffizienz auch neue Kunden für Sie?
Ja, aber nur durch Fürsprache und stete Aufklärungsarbeit. Ein Beispiel: Keine Hausfrau dreht ja die Heizung herunter,
während sie ein Zimmer lüftet. Mit einem EIB-System und Magnetkontakten an den Fenstern kann man aber automatisch
dafür sorgen, dass durch offene Fenster keine Heizenergie verschwendet wird. Automatisch gesteuerte Jalousien
wiederum sorgen sowohl für mehr Sicherheit als auch an heißen Sommertagen für mehr Kühlung. Wenn man Kunden
diesen mehrfachen Nutzen intelligenter Immobilien aufzeigt, sind die meisten gleich ganz Ohr.

Energieeffizienz / energy efficiency
Consequently, many architects and project developers have discovered a
clearly sustainable marketing argument for themselves – “green building”.
Among other things, the rapidly ascending career of the “Green Building
Conference” in the US bears witness to this boom. This specialist conference, which was organized for the first time a good ten years ago, attracted
at the time a small group of just 70 architects. At the most recent con­
ference 35,000 visitors crowded in to discuss energy efficiency, K values
and alternative energy strategies. And in Germany the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen” (German Association for Sustainable
Building, DGNB) established itself two years ago, and has since then been
awarding its DGNB certificate to the first particularly sustainable buildings.
The “Barron’s” investor magazine is certain that “green is worth its weight
in gold”, because “green” buildings are unmatchable in terms of competition
over the years. In Chicago for example, the 111 South Wacker Drive office
tower – with its “green building” rating – could be sold on after a few months
with a full complement of tenants, and this in a neighbourhood where
18 per cent of office space remains unoccupied. A few blocks further away,
the One South Dearborn Street complex – also distinguished with a
“sustainable” rating – was sold on to its new owners at a profit of 144 million
dollars. “Anyone who can post a green certificate on their doors has no
problems finding tenants and is promoted to the Champions League of
the property scene,” confirms the “Expo Real” property magazine.
Primarily, however, it is not the property owners who are concerned about
energy efficiency. “The biggest drivers are the users,” confirms Ingo Beenen,
Head of Strategic Consulting at the property service provider Jones Lang
LaSalle. “Many of the largest and commercially most powerful companies
will in future only be renting space that can show it has good sustainability
qualities and the appropriate certification.”
This enthusiasm still has to be awakened among private property owners.
For a dozen years now, the architect Daniel Sauter has, for example, been
designing private houses and residential estates that appear to be pure,
compact and ultra-modern, but have very little to do with traditional “ecological architecture”, yet they have been sustainably conceived down to the
very last detail. Working from his office with five employees in the area near
Lake Constance in southern Germany, this 46-year-old architect – who has
already realized over 100 projects – has built a single family house that even
sets an example in terms of building materials and recycling capability.
The design of this 270-square-metre house consists of wood from silver firs
that have been grown and felled within a five-kilometre radius. Thanks to its
triple glazing, north-south alignment, solar equipment and high-performance
wood-burning stove, the residents of the house can manage with 70% less
fossil fuels than their neighbours with more conventional lifestyles. Mr Sauter
remembers that the property owner fraternity “can also be won over by
the sustainable arguments of energy efficient building. We have absolutely
no missionary ambitions, but both the economical and environmental
advan­t ages are, quite simply, impressive.”
Just how impressive the consumption values are can be checked on the
spot by Mr Sauter’s property owner whenever they want. The new home is
equipped with switches from the Berker K. 1 series as well as a building
operations system that can be accessed via the Internet from any location.
“This way,” says Mr Sauter, “property owners truly discover the benefits of
energy efficiency sustainably for themselves.”

Everyone’s talking about energy efficiency – you too?
Of course everyone wants to save energy, though individual requirements differ greatly from customer to customer. For
Joe Public who has saved every penny to buy his own family house, there’s not a lot of room for manoeuvre when it
comes to energy-efficiency systems. Better-off home owners are very different, and office and commercial buildings are
obviously a different matter anyway. A fair bit of persuasion is still always required though.
How do you convince your clients?
With office buildings and storage and production facilities, operating costs remain an important factor, and these can
be greatly reduced by the use of intelligent systems. So business proprietors will be more open to the subject of energy
efficiency. Home owners on the other hand first have to be shown what’s possible. That’s OK though.
Can the subject of energy efficiency help you to reach new customers?
Yes, but only with the help of constant education. For example, no housewife would ever turn the heating down
while airing a room. But with an EIB system and magnetic contacts on the windows, you can automatically make sure
no heating energy is lost through open windows. And automatically-controlled curtains increase security and
cool things down on hot summer days. When you demonstrate the many advantages of intelligent buildings to
customers, they are usually all ears.

Wherever there are people there will be germs. Wherever there’s a lot of people, there will be a lot of germs.
And there are especially many germs in places where many sick people with weakened immune systems come into
contact with each other: in hospitals the spread of bacteria has become a severe medical, financial
and human problem.
Fifty thousand people die each year from hospital germs
So-called multi-resistant bacterial strains, which are completely resistant to normal antibiotics, present a particularly
serious threat to patients and healthcare workers. Across Europe more than 50,000 people lose their lives each year
from hospital germs – that’s more than the number who die from AIDS.
The effectiveness of silver ions is controversial

Wie ist Berker Comfort Center 9˝ entstanden?
Am Anfang unseres Konstruktionsprozesses standen zwei Fragen: Was
wollen Kunden wirklich? Und wie können wir Installateuren die Arbeit erleichtern? Es sind zwei schlichte und im Grunde selbstverständliche Fragen.
Aber sie bedingen eine völlig andere Art der Perspektive: weg von einer
technoiden Sicht, hin zum Blickwinkel des Kunden. Wir wollten ein Gerät,
das nicht Arbeit, sondern Spaß macht. Das Endkunden wie Installateuren
das Leben erleichtert. Das in jeder Hinsicht positiv überrascht. Und genau
so eines ist es geworden.

Mikroelektronische Schaltungen und Systeme“, die das technologische
Rückgrat konstruierten. Designer und Softwarespezialisten der Kölner LBI
AG kümmerten sich um die konsequent benutzerfreundliche Gestaltung
des „Frontends“. Nicht zu vergessen unsere hauseigenen Fachleute, die
den Entwicklungsprozess leiteten.
Berker Comfort Center 9˝ wurde von jenen Menschen entwickelt, die
es künftig einsetzen werden: Elektroinstallateuren und Endkunden.

Eine Fokusgruppe von Fachhandwerkern hat den Entwicklungsprozess von
Anfang an kritisch begleitet, ihn mit Erfahrungen aus der Praxis bereichert
und uns wertvolle Anregungen gegeben. Endkunden aller Altersgruppen
wiederum haben es auf Alltagstauglichkeit getestet und die Ideen der Spezi­a listen immer wieder im Praxistest geprüft. Ihr häufigster Kommentar? „Wow!“
Wie bedient man es?
Ganz genau so, wie man auch ein iPhone bedient. Alle Funktionen sind
übersichtlich angeordnet und lassen sich schnell durch­b lättern. Dabei
erscheinen die am häufigsten benutzten Funktionen jeweils auf der Startseite. Und was man nicht gleich findet, lässt sich über eine einfache
Such­f unktion in Sekundenschnelle ansteuern. Um mit Berker Comfort
Center 9˝ ein Haus zu steuern, braucht es daher weder eine Gebrauchs­
anleitung noch einen Installateur an der Seite.
Was bringt es dem Installateur?
Eine Menge. Berker Comfort Center 9˝ ist so angelegt, dass Benutzer ihre
Umgebung spielend selber individualisieren können. Für den Fachhand­
werker entfällt damit zeitraubender (und häufig unbezahlter) Installationsaufwand. Im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Geräten lässt sich Berker Comfort
Center 9˝ deutlich schneller installieren. Gleichzeitig lassen sich mit ihm
neue Kundengruppen erschließen, denen Haussteuerungen bislang zu
kompliziert erschienen.
Warum heisst es Berker Comfort Center 9˝ ?
„9“ steht für den neun Zoll großen Bildschirm, „Center“ für die Kompetenz
des Geräts, alle relevanten Funktionen einer Immobilie zu steuern. Und
„Comfort“ heißt es, weil es diese Vielzahl an komplexen Funktionen in einem
einzigen, komfortabel zu bedienenden Gerät zusammenführt. Das zeigen
auch die Praxistests: Im „Fraunhofer inHaus-Zentrum für intelligente Raumund Gebäudesysteme“ wurden Prototypen des Touchpanels von Endkunden
ausgiebig erprobt. Ihr Fazit: Begeisterung.
Was steckt in ihm?
9˝ Farbdisplay mit 800 x 480 Pixel Auflösung, USB- und SD-KartenAnschluss, IP-Anschluss (und damit Zugriff übers Internet), Mikrofon, Kamera,
Lautsprecher. Ausführung auch als Panel 9˝-Version (ohne KNX-Modul)
zum Anschluss an einen bereits vorhandenen IP-Control.

What can the Berker Comfort Center 9˝ DO?
Everything that an intelligent house needs: control of heat and air
conditioning, curtains and blinds, lights and lighting scenarios, alarm
units and safety systems. An overview of all important functions and
energy consumption. And a whole line-up of functions that make
day-to-day life easier – things like video memos, email, RSS, data logger,
weather module and mirror function.
But what exactly makes it stand out from
other house control devices?
Pretty much everything. Its multiplicity of functions. Its capacitive screen
that functions just like the iPhone screen. Its ease of installation. Its reso­
lutely user-oriented construction. Not forgetting its pure, elegant design.
How did the Berker Comfort Center 9˝ come
into being?
At the beginning of our construction process we asked two questions: what
do customers really want? And how can we make life easier for installers?
These are two simple and obvious questions. But they demand a thoroughly
new way of looking at things: a move away from a technocentric point of
view, and towards the customer’s point of view. We wanted a device that
wouldn’t feel like work, and instead would feel like fun; that would make life
easier for both the installers and the end users; that would provide all
manner of positive surprises. And that’s just what we ended up with.
And who developed it?
Big ideas start in someone’s head. But really great ideas start when the
best heads around get together. The technological backbone of the Berker
Comfort Center 9˝ was constructed by the engineers and electrical engineering technicians of the Fraunhofer Institute for Micro-Electronic Switches
and Systems. Designers, while software specialists from Cologne-based
LBI AG made sure the front end was thoroughly user-friendly. And last but
by no means least, our own in-house specialists headed up the development
process. In fact, however, the Berker Comfort Center 9˝ was developed
by the very people who would in future be putting it into practice: the
electricians and end users.

Self-explanatory symbols are guiding the user through the menu of the Berker Comfort Center 9˝.
A focus group of specialist tradesmen provided constructive criticism right
from the start of the development process, enriching the process by sharing
their practical experience and providing valuable suggestions. In addition,
end users of all ages tested the device in everyday situations and checked
how well the specialists’ ideas stood up to application in the real world.
The comment most frequently heard made was … “Wow!”
How is it operated?
In exactly the same way as an iPhone – all of its functions are clearly laid
out and quick to browse through. The functions that are most frequently
used appear on the front page. And if there’s something you can’t find
straight away, you can locate it in seconds using the simple search function.
To control a house using the Berker Comfort Center 9˝, you won’t need an
installer standing by your side, or an instruction manual in your hand.
What do installers stand to gain?
A great deal. The Berker Comfort Center 9˝ is laid out in such a way that
users can very easily tailor their environment to their requirements. For the
specialist tradesman this cuts down time-consuming (and often unpaid)
installation work. The Berker Comfort Center 9˝ is far quicker to install than
conventional equivalent devices. And it can help you tap into a whole new
customer group – those for whom, until now, house control devices were too
complicated to use.
Where does the name Berker Comfort
Center 9˝ come from?
The 9˝ stands for the devices nine-inch screen, it is a “Center” because it
can control all relevant functions within a property. “Comfort” because it
conveniently brings together a multiplicity of complex functions in one
single, easy-to-use device. Practical trials have confirmed the benefits:
at the “Fraunhofer In-House Centre for Intelligent Space and Building
Systems”, prototypes of the touch panel have been extensively tested
by end users. And greeted with enthusiasm.
What’s inside it?
A 9˝ colour display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, USB and SD card
connections, IP connection (and therefore access to the internet),
micro­p hone, camera, speaker. Execution as a panel 9˝ version (without
KNX module) for connection to an existing IP-Control.

Wir sind es. Denn Berker ist in den vergangenen Jahren nicht
weniger als 49-mal mit nationalen oder internationalen Design­
preisen prämiert worden. 15-mal wurden Kataloge, Broschüren
oder andere Kommunikationsmittel gewürdigt, 34-mal einer

We know our designs are good, but still we can’t help feeling a
sense of pride every time our products and catalogues receive
awards on the basis of extended reviewing, judging and testing
by a number of independent expert juries. Berker has been
awarded national or international design prizes no less than
49 times in recent years. On fifteen occasions this was for a
catalogue, brochure or other communication medium, while on
34 occasions it was for one of our switches or systems. This
is a welcome affirmation not only for us, but also for our
customers. It shows them that they are not alone
