Spring had come and the last snow was black with dirt and poison. People everywhere seemed slow,
and behind their sunglasses they were hiding the hollowness that one too many winters leave in
everyone. The days passed slowly yet darkness came fast. While the thin coffee in his dirty cup went
from cool to cold, he sat and rolled another cigarette. It always got so quiet then. Surely, it will be
edged in his mind forever: That Day Last November.
If he were to listen to some music now - it would surely be the new album "That Day Last November"
by Austria's Our Ceasing Voice. For it's a concept album about the passage of time, that's supposed to
heal all wounds; a dark and gloomy record, situated between hypnotizing ambient and something that
once was Post-Rock. An album about those things in life one can't escape: death, mortality.
Reminiscence and oblivion, love and grief.
Since their foundation, Our Ceasing Voice's line-up has constantly been changing. Only in 2010 the
founding members and guitarists Sebastian and Reinhard Obermeir have found a drummer, Markus
Rappold, who first appeared on "When The Headline Hit Home", the band's full-lenght-debut. But also
the ever vacant position on bass has finally been filled in April 2011. Originally joining up with the band
as a touring-bassist, it soon became clear, Eyup Kus was here to stay. Without hesitation Our Ceasing
Voice released a Split EP together with Satory from Vienna in November 2011. Therefore, "For Darkness
Fears The Light", the song that was released on this 7" Split, marks the first creation of a band, that got
together and finally found itself.
The clearly different nature of the new album, however, is not only due to these circumstances. While
the band has again produced, recorded and mixed the album itself in their own studio, Our Ceasing
Voice count on the support of their friends and musicians this time around. For instance, American
singer-songwriter Matthew Ryan's characteristic, rasp and raw voice and lyrics give the songs "Until
Your Chest Explodes" and "The Anniversary" their unique, melancholic vibe. Also, the vocals of
Reinhard Obermeir are increasingly used. His low, almost dying voice has become characteristic for the
band at the latest on "When The Headline Hit Home". At the same time, the tighter song-structures
enable Our Ceasing Voice to tell the 40 minute and 8 song long story of a man, who was disappointed
by a world, in which everything once seemed possible. A world that was stalled by the loss of love.
These feelings are not only portrayed in the music. The artwork by Thomas Neulinger allows to trace
the atmosphere and story, even before the first chord has resounded. And so the listener, as well as the
protagonist of the story, will not be able to escape their memory. Of everything that happened, on That
Day Last November.

Der Frühling war gekommen und die letzten Schneereste waren vom Dreck und den Abgasen dunkel
überzogen.Die Menschen auf der Straße wirkten gleichgültig und hinter ihren Sonnenbrillen
versteckten sie die Einsamkeit, in der sie die Abschiede des Winters hinterlassen hatten. Die Tage
vergingen langsam, doch die Dunkelheit kam schnell. Während der dünne Kaffee in seiner dreckigen
Tasse von lauwarm zu kalt wechselte, rollte er noch eine Zigarette. Da saß er nun: ruhig und einsam. Der
Stille lauschend. Sicher, dass er für immer in seinem Gedächtnis eingebrannt bleibt. Jener Tag im
vergangenen November.
Legte er jetzt Musik auf - es wäre wohl das neue Album der Österreicher Our Ceasing Voice "That Day
Last November". Denn es ist ein Konzeptalbum über das Vergehen jener Zeit, der man nachsagt, sie
heile alle Wunden; ein dunkles, düsteres Werk, irgendwo zwischen hypnotisierenden Ambient und
etwas, das einmal Post-Rock war, situiert. Ein Album über die Dinge im Leben, denen man nicht
entgehen kann: dem Tod, der Vergänglichkeit. Dem Erinnern und dem Vergessen, der Liebe und der
Trauer.
Seit der Gründung 2006 ist die Bandgeschichte von Personalwechseln durchzogen. Mit Markus
Rappold fanden die Gründungsmitglieder und Gitarristen Sebastian und Reinhard Obermeir erst 2010
einen begnadeten Schlagzeuger, der erstmals auf "When The Headline Hit Home", dem Full-Lenght
Debüt der Band, zu hören war. Doch auch die immer wieder leer gewordene Position am Bass ist seit
April 2011 fix besetzt. Ursprünglich als Tour-Bassist zur Band gestoßen, war es für die Musiker schnell
klar, dass Eyup Kus zum konstanten Mitglied der Band werden sollte. Kurzerhand veröffentlichten Our
Ceasing Voice im November 2011 einen Split mit der Wiener Band Satory. "For Darkness Fears The
Light", der auf dem 7" Split veröffentlichte Song, markiert das erste Schaffen einer Band, die sich selbst
und endlich zusammengefunden hat.
Der deutlich unterschiedliche Charakter des neuen Albums ist jedoch nicht nur diesen Umständen zu
verdanken. Während die Band das Album wiederum in ihrem eigenen Studio produzierte,
aufgenommen und gemischt hat, zählen Our Ceasing Voice mit "That Day Last November" auf die
Unterstützung befreundeter Musiker. So etwa des amerikanischen Singer-Songwriters Matthew Ryan,
der mit seinem rauchig-charakteristischen Gesang und Lyrics den Songs "Until Your Chest Explodes"
und "The Anniversary" ihr einzigartiges, melancholisches Wesen schenkt. Verstärkt kommen auch auf
die Vocals von Reinhard Obermeir, dessen tiefe, röchelnde, fast sterbende Stimme spätestens mit
"When The Headline Hit Home" zum Charakteristikum der Band geworden ist, zum Einsatz. Dabei sind
es die strafferen Songstrukturen, die es Our Ceasing Voice erlauben, in rund 40 Minuten die Geschichte
eines Mannes nachzuzeichnen, der von einer Welt enttäuscht wird, in der einst alles möglich schien.
Einer Welt, die vom Verlust der Liebe zum Stillstand gebracht wurde.
Diese Gefühle spiegeln sich nicht nur in der Musik wider. Das Artwork von Thomas Neulinger
ermöglicht es, der Atmosphäre und der Geschichte, noch bevor der erste Ton erklingt, nachzuspüren.
Und so wird sich neben dem Protagonisten der Story, auch der Hörer seiner Erinnerung nicht entziehen
können. An all das, was passiert ist. An diesem Tag im vergangenen November.
