Explosion-proof RFID Card Reader type KL5-R and KL5-RM (with
additional Wiegand Reader) for use in hazardous areas of zone 1
The new generation of explosion-proof card
readers for reading and writing of contactless
RFID smart cards according to ISO 14443 (with
or without an extra card reader unit for
Wiegand ident cards)
With the card readers KL5-R and KL5-RM Timm
Elektronik GmbH offers from now on intrinsically
safe card readers for reading and writing of RFID
smart cards, which are ATEX certified for operation
in hazardous areas of zone 1. With the card reader
type KL5-RM we did also succeed to assemble
a contactless RFID smart card reader and a
Wiegand card reader (similar to the former types
of our card readers) into one device. Therefore
both new RFID smart cards according to ISO 14443
(part of 1 - 3) as well as the commonly used
Wiegand ident cards can be read equally with this
combo card reader. The card reader type KL5-R,
which is not equipped with a Wiegand reader unit,
can be operated as a separate RFID smart card
reader, but serves as well for the simple extension
of our explosion-proof terminal type LT-4-Ex, to
which it can be connected to the secondary TExi
bus interface.
The conception of the new RFID smart card
readers KL5-R and KL5-RM, which are in common
with type KL-4 components of our TE-DAT 2000
Peripheral Equipment Data System and that are
operating at the intrin-sically safe supply and data
bus [TExi bus ] from the KCS communications
controller, enables all our customers, which are
using Wiegand ident cards since many years, a
"soft" upgrade of their card reader system on new,
less expensive RFID smart cards, without the
obligation to replace all existing Wiegand ident
cards for this immediately.
The interface of the new RFID smart card readers
to the higher computer system has been designed
fully downward-compatible, so that it does not
make a difference for the
upper access & loading management system,
which kind of ID card is currently used by the
respective user. For that reason an exchange of

existing KL-4 card readers against RFID card readers of the
type KL5-R or KL5-RM is possible without difficulty. Derived
from the possibility that temporary data can also be written
on the RFID smart cards various new application
possibilities for such RFID card reader systems become
obtainable.
The data transmission between the card reader and a RFID
smart card is functioning contactlessly, as soon as the smart
card is placed within the range of the electromagnetic field
of the reader. This transmission distance has been chosen
in such a way that on the one hand a comfortable handling
is ensured, excluding on the other hand a cross modulation
between two devices installed next to each other. Previous
to the actual data communication a multi-level safety
inquiry is performed, which guarantees that only
authorized RFID cards will be accepted.
The intrinsically safe card readers type KL5-R/RM are
certified in accordance with the European Directive for
Explosion Prevention ATEX 95 as electrical apparatuses of
the category II 2 G for use in hazardous areas of the zone 1.
The type of protection corresponds to: EEx ib IIC T4. The
intrinsically safe power supply and data communication can
be carried out alternatively by the Ex-i-interface Board type
KCI-Ex of the Communication Controller System KCS as well
as by the Terminal type LT-4-Ex, which is equipped with a
secondary TExi bus interface.
As supply and data line a simple 4-wire cable (of shielded,
twisted pair type) with a conductor diameter of minimum

0.75 mm² is suitable. The maximum total length of
a bus line from the Ex-i-Interface Board type KCIEx, to which up to five KL5-R/RM readers can be
connected in line, can be up to 1.000 m.

aluminium housing serves for a high protection against
rough site conditions. The enclosure protection class acc. to
EN 60529 corresponds to IP 65.
The data interface of the Communication
Controller System type KCS to the higher access &
loading management computer can be arranged
alternatively as RS422, RS232 or TTY interface.
In conjunction with further devices of our TE DAT 2000
Peripheral Equipment Data System (e.g. the explosionproof Terminals type LT-4-Ex) individual data input and card
reader systems for access control, process management
and loading automation within the mineral oil and chemical
industry can be realized.
As transmission protocol the Siemens PLC
procedure DUST 3964R is available. Via bus

With the development of our new, intrinsically safe card reader KL5-R/RM we
succeeded to make available the recent "radio
frequency identification" (RFID) technology,
by which the data stored on a transponder
chip is trans-mitted contactlessly by radio
over short distances, also for applications
within hazardous areas.
With the card reader KL5-RM we offer
furthermore a combo card reader that is
capable to read both the new RFID smart
cards as well as 56 bits Wiegand ident cards,
which are used for the identification of tank
trucks on tank farms and refineries for many
years.
The card reader type KL5-R, which is not
equipped with a Wiegand reader unit, can be
operated as a separate RFID smart card
reader, but serves as well for the simple
extension of our explosion-proof terminal
type LT-4-Ex.
