High Temperature Stepping Motors
Field of application
The standard stepping motors from the MICROSTEP series are generally permitted for
operation in ambient temperatures ranging from +5° to +55°C. Use in the frost range as low
as -20°C is certainly possible as long as the customer can ensure that no condensate gets
into the motor.
In most cases, use at higher temperatures is what is more critical. For this reason, we have
developed stepping motors with a special structural design and optimised the selection of
materials that allow the motor to be used in ambient temperatures up to 90°C. If the
electronics of the motor are configured properly and the controller is adapted, ambient
temperatures of over 100°C are possible.
Functional description
Each MICROSTEP stepping motor in the SHS 39/200-0100 to SHS 39/200-4000 series can
be constructed to work at high ambient temperatures. The basic winding geometry and,
therefore, the electrical parameters remain the same. Due to the slightly larger air gap
present in the high temperature motors, the torque is somewhat less than with standard step
motors. Roughly 10 to 15 % less torque can be assumed at a comparable operating
frequency. The standard motor connecting leads are 400 mm long and are Teflon-insulated.
The degree to which coupler connectors can be used depends on the type of connector and
position of the mating connector. In most cases, the electronics are located outside of the
critical temperature section.
Along with the stepping motors, it is also possible to set up linear actuators of the LA 71 and
LA 72 series for higher temperatures.
M 3x -5 (e1... e4)
The SHS 39/200-1651 stepping motor was developed as a typical example. It is used as a
high temperature motor in illumination systems and is designed for constant ambient
temperatures of 80°C.
