Aimed at the home health market, the imPulse will allow the routine, quick and accurate recording of ECG signal outside of the medical environment and without the need for conductive gel or skin preparation. This compact, hand-held device detects an ECG signal when the user‘s two thumbs are placed on the two sensor pads using two Plessey PS25201 sensors to recover the ECG signals. It measures the left and right signals and transmits the data via a Bluetooth link to a Smartphone or Tablet where custom software can then display the ECG trace and perform some simple analysis of heart rate. It is the world’s first audio amplifier that can drive the cabin loudspeakers directly, without any external components, in 24V vehicles, confirming ST’s dedication to the heavy-vehicle segment. ST’s TDA7576B 24V is built in a proven high-volume semiconductor manufacturing technology called BCD5 that allows a single chip to include both the power blocks and the signal management blocks – so there is no need to use a more expensive multi-chip approach – and it can sustain a peak supply voltage of 60 V without any damage. Key features of the TDA7576B include: 24V battery operation; high output power (2 x 20 W); minimized Atmel Powertrain-Mikrocontroller external components (no decoupling capacitors, no bootstrap capacitor and no external compensation components); integrated power-saving standby function; diagnostic output pin that alerts the host controller in the event of clipping, short circuits or excessive temperature; output DC offset detection; protection against 60V load dump, excessive chip temperature, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) and output short circuit to GND, Vcc, or across the load. Ihr Engelbert Hopf, Markt&Technik Time for new alignment, time for new positioning One could almost describe the current narcissism, not only in the German electrical engineering and electronic industries, as lamentation with a touch of class. Clearly, no one would deny that this year’s revenue and production volumes are lower than 2011. But then again – was anything normal in 2011? The severity of the cycles through which the semiconductor industry constantly moves has become more extreme and, in recent years, clearly more frequent. A phenomenon which has been observable at least since the bursting of the dot. com bubble and one to which the industry has, in the meantime, adapted. The lessons of the last few years are that most members of the industry can now respond to a market becoming ever more complex with a breathing company structure. If we look back to Electronica 2008 we see an industry at a turning point. In the fall of 2008 there were virtually no indicators hinting at the strength with which distortion on the financial markets would transmit itself into the real world. Then two years ago the race to catch-up began. Electronica 2010 saw many Presidents und CEOs engaged in countless fire-fighting jobs. Somehow the pent-up demand had to be dealt with without upsetting too many customers. And this year? No sign of fire-fighters. Most companies – and their decision makers – have probably already left Munich to focus their attention on essential issues in other parts of the world. Instead of talking to their customers about a supply chain stretched to breaking point most managers are likely to have used these last months to promote their company’s realignment and groundbreaking new positioning in important growth sectors. Against this background this year’s Electronica offers the opportunity to work with partners on the way to making needed changes and to make it clear why one has chosen a particular strategy for the future and why one will possibly adopt a different emphasis than the competition. There are currently many indications that the European market could recover as soon as the beginning of next year. By contrast, how the US market will develop remains, also after Obama’s re-election, unclear. Whereby, if the market in Asia picks-up as expected in the second half of next year, then bookings and anticipated revenues for 2013 will clearly exceed those of this year. In the world’s mega-cities, traffic infrastructure often looks like it’s collapsing under its own weight. Authorities have realized that simply constructing more roads cannot relieve the daily routine of major traffic congestion – instead, they are starting to cooperate with NXP to create intelligent systems for effi-cient traffic management and greater fuel savings in both private and public transportation. This will become even more important with the rise of eMobility. Cars that ‘think’ can help the driver select the best, most energy efficient route to a destination, and significantly reduce the number of road accidents. Via secure wireless connection schemes, road signs and cars can talk » to one another to regulate the flow of traffic and warn drivers of hazards up ahead. They can even locate, book, and conveniently pay for the nearest battery charging station, thus helping to overcome one of the major fears in eMobility: the fear of becoming stranded without power. NXP’s Auto-motive Telematics Onboard-unit Platform (ATOP) and IEEE802.11p CarITS platform give vehicles the capability to interact with their environment, including car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications. Particularly in the eMobility era, the car is no longer an isolated means of personal transportation, but a central part of the Internet of Things. Semiconductors have a key role to play in making this happen. Rick Clemmer, NXP Guest commentary Embedded processing enabling smart solutions Gregg Lowe, Freescale Semiconductor Embedded processing is driving the Internet of Things, and Freescale is leading the way with the semiconductors and software that enable the machine-to-machine connectivity that will make this possible. Energy efficiency is a critical requirement and an essential benefit that will be delivered as we strive for greener and cleaner electronic systems. The goal of the worldwide rollout of smart grids and smart meters is to improve energy efficiency throughout the entire energy infrastructure. Freescale Semiconductor provides secure end-to-end solutions that support the entire smart grid including all points along the system, from transmission, distribution » and substations to energy delivery in and around the home. Freescale is focused on expanding our leadership positions in microcontrollers and digital networking processors to provide the engines that will drive this new era of embedded intelligence and connectivity that will enable next-generation products and services in the automotive, industrial and networking markets. We feel electronica is a great opportunity to showcase our expertise and bring together our customers and partners to discuss the innovation that will help drive our businesses forward. Gregg Lowe, Freescale President and CEO Guest commentary Smart grids will make deliver power more intelligently Carlo Bozotti, STMicroelectronics The traditional electricity grid has not changed in 100 years. It must be replaced by more efficient, flexible and intelligent energy-distribution networks, called “smart grids.” The convergence of communication technology and information technology with power-system engineering will optimize power delivery, enable energy management, minimize disruption and maximize efficiency. Full exploitation of renewable energy and the viability of electric vehicles depend on smart grids. Transitioning to a full smart grid will not be easy because there is no global standard for mains voltage or frequency modulation. Still, the semiconductor technology to enable this revolution is available now. For example, ST has been a pioneer in helping power companies introduce smart meters; these solutions are already being deployed in Italy and Spain. So how can we exploit existing technologies to accelerate the evolution of smart grids while keeping full backward compatibility and maintaining service during the transition? It’s like trying to change the tire on a car while it is driving down the street. 4 The Official electronica Daily We must follow two key paths. The first requires platforms, like ST’s STarGridTM power-line communications System-on-Chip solution. This is a flexible, scalable and future-proof platform that would meet the needs of all current and future power-line communications protocols. The second path demands Partnering. STarGrid was developed working closely with key players throughout the energy supply chain, a dialogue to be extended worldwide. The world’s energy problem will not be solved by a technological miracle – it will be solved by technology, by education and by partnerships. The effort must involve national governments, utility providers and the semiconductor companies that provide the key technologies. But we can’t do it alone and the smart grid, with electronics, sensors, and IT, will give even individuals a greater say in the management of their own power consumption and in the future of our world. Netbooks have clearly driven the development of Intel’s Atom and the embedded sector has benefited as a result. Still, the smallest of the netbook designs have passed their zenith and are losing customers. One of their most important markets to date – emerging countries in Southeast Asia, South America and the Middle East – is now turning increasingly to tablet computers. With the increased software and hardware costs sure to accompany the upcoming change to next generation Windows 8, even more pressure is bound to be put on netbook manufacturers. Initial reactions from the two – currently largest – netbook providers have already been noted. Asustek has terminated the production of its “Eee PC” netbooks, which originally catapulted this format to worldwide popularity, and netbook heavyweight Acer – though it has not officially stopped production – hasn’t been announcing any new netbooks. Market observers are taking this as a clear sign that the end is near. In light of the dominance of the ARM processors used for tablet PCs and smartphones, Intel is unlikely to see a repeat of the success it had with Atom in these two segments. Changes in the road map are therefore only a question of time. Either Intel will optimize the Atom for mobile phones and smartphones – a move that would likely be accompanied by dramatic changes in its architecture and a loss of compatibility – or the leading chip manufacturer will abandon the series altogether and try to convince remaining customers to switch to one of its other processor series. Providers of embedded boards and systems are therefore monitoring developments very closely. “When the low-power netbook platform disappears, so will economies of scale. With only industrial products as a base, semiconductor manufacturers will be venturing out on very thin ice whenever they produce such complex chips – the necessary quantities simply won’t be there,” says KlausDieter Walter, Business Development Manager at SSV Software Systems, in summarizing the economic problem. The end of Atom processors would be very unpleasant for the embedded sector. “The Atom has established a 10 The Official electronica Daily solid position in the industry. One of its real advantages is that users are familiar with its software. In addition, it has low power consumption and an affordable price tag,” says Christian Eder, Director of Marketing at congatec, enumerating the benefits. “Though ARM and Atom overlap each other in some areas, in many applications, porting software to ARM requires a relatively large H.-Günther Weisenahl, Industrial Computer Source (Germany) ” The current Atom has lots of I/O possibilities; expansions in particular. ” amount of time and effort. Many fruitless attempts have been made to quickly port a real-time application that took some 15 or 20 years to develop to an entirely new platform.” Industry insiders are keeping calm even though the Atom is hugely important to the sector. “In terms of outlook for our industry, Intel will doubtless build another two or three generations of Atom processors simply because they want the tablet market,” underscores Christian Blersch, Managing Director of E.E.P.D. “Whether they get it or not remains to be seen, however – if they don‘t – we had better be prepared to address the subject of Atom.” “But even should Intel gain a foothold in the tablet market, it won’t be cause for the embedded market to rejoice,” warns Peter Lippert, Managing Director of Lippert Adlink Technology. “Due to cost sensitivities, important interfaces will doubtless have to be eliminated. Thought it might be a market success for Intel, I seriously doubt it would be one for the embedded sector.” Ironically, the orientation towards consumer tablets could have a very negative impact on industry tablets. “The current Atom has lots of I/O possibilities; expansions in particular,” explains H.-Günther Weisenahl, CEO of Industrial Computer Source (Germany). “Whenever you have I/ Os, you’re going to have to use the Intel Atom. The costs of using ARM would be prohibitive.” What x86 alternatives are there to the Atom? “APUs from AMD are an interesting platform because they offer a combination that poses a real bottleneck for current Atom processors: low power together with high graphic performance. Graphics and driver support in Atom haven’t always been ideal. Sometimes the hard- Peter Lippert, Lippert Adlink Technology ” Even should Intel gain a foothold in the tablet market, it won’t be cause for the embedded market to rejoice. ” ware was able to do more than the software allowed,” explains Eder. “In contrast, AMD has significant inhouse graphics expertise with the ATI and has already leveraged it very effectively. What‘s more, the graphic engine can also be used for processing-intensive operations, which means it could even replace a DSP or two. Additionally, OpenCL provides an open standard for programming that is supported by Intel and Freescale alike.” Another alternative The ARM architecture is frequently suggested as another alternative. “But performance requirements will have to be very strictly differentiated. Currently, there is no alternative to x86 for applications that require very high computing needs,” underscores Bodo Huber, Chief Technology Officer at Phytec Messtechnik. “What’s more, x86 will continue to set interface standards. It is common knowledge that USB and PCI Express interfaces were passed on from the x86 world to the ARM sector.” Which is why the x86 architecture will long remain an important sales driver for the embedded computing sector. Mastering the balancing act between online and offline sales in distribution is no easy matter. The golden rule “It all depends on the target audience” applies here as it does almost everywhere. Whereas the Internet has become the primary sales channel for catalogue distributors, personal contact remains the number one channel for volume distribution. For catalogue distributors the Internet has become an indispensable sales channel as Stephan Stammberger, Country Manager, Germany, for RS Components emphasises. “In our case, we are talking of between one and two million line items which, in the future, without the Internet we would be unable to display in its entirety.” E-commerce today represents seventy per cent of the company’s billings. While RS continue to produce a printed catalogue, this is more of a window to the range which can be found on the website. This principle also applies to other catalogue distributors. What the Internet means for manufacturers with regard to catalogue distributors summarises Dietmar Jäger, Senior Director, Distribution at TDK-EPC, “For us the Internet is an indispensable platform, enabling us to supply our devices to designers worldwide and around the clock. As such we can even reach design departments which our direct sales team find difficult or even impossible to penetrate and that in almost every country on earth.” Furthermore, according to Florian Schrott, Distribution Director, EMEA, at Maxim Integrated, many designers take manufacturers’ listings on distributor websites as a criteria that the device in question is actually available. “For a catalogue distributor, it is imperative that the whole product line is shown and can be purchased, even in small quantities or as samples.” company’s philosophy. “If you don’t move with the times, time moves on without you” aptly quotes Tilo Rollwa, Director of E-Commerce at Rutronik. Correspondingly there are no longer any large volume distributors who do not have an online channel. Future, for example, successfully based its “look and feel” very closely on Amazon’s appearance as Maier confirms, “The investment to show customers what other customers have recently bought similar to Amazon has paid off. Thanks to the Webshop, we are now appearing on the radar of new customers and have raised our awareness level among new target groups.” Rutronik has also refurbished its E-commerce portal ‘Webg@ te.’ With this volume customers can place orders themselves, within agreed delivery and payment conditions, and manage lead times online. Via an interface the customer can download his backlog and thus can partially automate order confirmations and import them into his own inventory control system. “This represents a huge saving of resources, especially for C-parts” explains Rollwa. Compared to the old ‘Webg@te’ the new portal will offer a different look for different target groups, for example designers and purchasers. The new ‘Webg@te’ will go live at Electronica. Avnet has located the online businesses of all its Speedboats under Avnet Express. “We started this in a very limited way in Europe last year and are currently engaged in expanding possibilities for our cus- Gerald Maier, Future ” We have no concerns that cut-throat competition will develop. ” tomers” said Georg Steinberger, Vice President of Avnet Communications. In addition to pure product procurement, the provision of data on the web helps the salesman do his job. “In the past, customers had to obtain data sheets or brochures from their suppliers” recalls Bernd Schlemmer, Director of Communications at EBV Elektronik. “Today they get them immediately online, which is a great help to everyone.” He is convinced that the web represents an important supplementary service which will simplify and speed up many standard processes. “But only up to the point when specific questions or problems crop up.” In this respect Rainer Maier, Technical Sales Manager, Germany, can only smile at the question “Will FAEs be replaced by the Internet?” “For us, as design-in specialists, FAEs are of vital importance. For us it is very clear that FAEs will not be Will personal contact become obsolete? Jäger observes a current trend in which volume distributors develop strategies similar to those of catalogue distributors for small quantity business in order to maximise leads. Small quantity business was frowned upon in the past by volume distribution but recently they have tried to take this business out of the exclusive hands of catalogue distributors. Gerald Maier, Marketing Manager, Central Europe at Future, explains that his company’s small quantity product offering for pre-production or samples can easily be ordered online, has been well accepted and has even won Future new customers. To what extent a volume distributor includes the Internet in its strategy and how far this becomes part of its value add depends on the 14 The Official electronica Daily Tila Rollwa, Rutronik Karlheinz Weigl, Silica ” For less expensive products, the Internet as an information source will grow in importance. ” replaced by the internet, neither in the mid-term nor in the long-term. From our point of view, nothing can replace personal consultation.” In the view of Karlheinz Weigl, Vice President, Central Europe at Silica, the extent to which a designer allows himself to be guided by information on the Internet alone in his product selection, depends largely on the value of the device. “No customer would decide for or against a Cortex architecture based on information from the Internet. Whereas, for less expensive products, the Internet as an information source will grow in importance.” However, it will not be quite that simple for any designer looking to uncritically select his device on the vastness of the Internet. Most companies, at least larger organisations have an internal product catalogue which prescribes precisely which products the designer can use, Waldemar Christen, Head of Sales and Marketing at BMK Group reminds us. The Augsburg-based EMS Company itself employs around sixty designers. “An individual designer alone cannot decide if a particular product should be included in the Bill-of-Material” says Christen. A designer can, however, recommend a new product. Whereas that alone can be enough to steer the product selection process in the wrong direction because, if a designer has made a wrong proposal based on his Internet research, this can influence the decision from the beginning. Complementary channels Stephan Stammberger, RS Bernd Schlemmer, EBV ” In our case, we are talking of between one and two million line items which, in the future, without the Internet we would be unable to display in its entirety. ” ” In the past, customers had to obtain data sheets or brochures from their suppliers – today they get them immediately online, which is a great help to everyone. ” How will the balance of power between online and traditional channels level out? In the view of Georg Steinberger the answer is a matter of definition. It depends, says Steinberger, on how one de- ” We view our online activity as an excellent supplement to our traditional sales. ” fines ‘online.’ After all, even the ‘traditional’ channel has already been online for many years, for example with EDI connections. What is more, he sees no conflict between online and classic sales. “In our opinion the two channels are complementary.” While, according to Rainer Maier, online is best at quick turnaround, small quantity business, the traditional channel continues to maintain its importance especially when it comes to sales negotiations for series production and when price plays a role. „But we have no concerns that cut-throat competition will develop.” In the opinion of Tilo Rollwa, the solution is ”to do the one but not ignore the other. We view our online activity as an excellent supplement to our traditional sales. From our point of view it is simply not possible for a sales person to have all the knowledge, the overview and the capabilities offered by the Internet.” Under certain circumstances the Internet also helps to optimise the purchasing process. It can of course also help simplify the dialogue between designers and FAEs points out Thomas Klein, Director, Distribution, at MSC-Gleichmann-Gruppe. Klein is furthermore convinced that a large part of future component distribution business will take place on the Internet. How large this part will be for each distributor, though, depends, according to Klein, on their respective business models. “For the strongly design-in oriented companies such as the MSC-Gleichmann-Gruppe, I could well imagine that Internet generated turnover would level out at between ten and twenty per cent by the middle of this decade.” It is also conceivable that the value-add might move into consultation and with it possibly prove to be a real problem for the user. (zü) n ENGINEERING THE WORLD Come and see us: Hall A4.420 www.ti.com electronica 2012 Design tools Reference Designs, Demo Boards & Co Accelerated design with reference tools from distributors Whether simple USB starter kits, reference designs or complex evaluation boards, development accelerators from distributors are enjoying unprecedented popularity. Anything that helps developers reduce the initial hurdles of a new project are in demand. In light of increasingly complex products and immense cost pressure, developers have little time to learn all the ins and outs of new technologies or architectures. Is the solution a return to tried-and-proven old technologies and architectures? Or simply use a reference design from the manufacturer. This is one – albeit often quite biased – possibility to obtain fast development results. Here, design aids from technically qualified distributors offer greater objectivity. Reference designs from distributors offer one key advantage over manufacturer kits. They are not created solely with the intention of presenting a certain component in the best possible light for marketing purposes, but are based on actual customer needs. As distributors confirm, they are “the largest common denominator of countless different customer demands.” In talks with customers, a distributor is able to learn firsthand and in very concrete terms what kind of difficulties developers are experiencing. These customer experiences, requirements and feedback are then incorporated directly into reference designs. Reference kits from distributors are therefore often closer to the market than boards created by manufacturers alone. What’s more, the object is not always to cover all possible applications by offering one extremely complex reference board: after all, developers often need one simple concept designed for rapid implementation. The size of the distributor is by no means an indication of its technical competence. In addition to big names such as MSC, Silica, EBV and Arrow, small- and mid-sized companies such as Glyn and MEV often deliver outstanding solutions in the form of their own proprietary and highly effective development tools and boards. The range of development aids offered by distributors caters to virtually any need, as shown by the following examples: ● Future Electronics develops its own numerous reference designs with absolutely no input from manufacturers. In line with its blox board approach, Future is seeking to offer a hardware development environment for a wide variety of markets like energy harvesting and lighting. Future Electronics designs its reference boards to be as complete as possible and that includes software as well. Along with reference board, customers receive either an operating system or a support package that covers the periphery drivers. One of the most recent products from Future‘s development lab is an energy harvesting board that should make it easier for the developers of energy harvesting applications to select components for energy self-sufficient systems. This board is able to evaluate the energy yield of various harvesting sources and, via a graphic user interface, visualize that application’s energy conversion and storage up to consumption. ● Soon after launch of the microcontroller initiative Core´n More, Silica introduced the market to the initiative’s first reference board. As implied by its name, the Xynergy Evaluation Board is a bridge between two worlds. In Version 2, Silica has incorporated the STM32F4xx from STMicroelectronics with Cortex-M4 core. Also included: the Spartan-6 family from Xilinx. Thanks to this combination, the board is capable of handling highperformance applications that can- The idea behind this Board from MEV is to demonstrate the performance capability of power supply via PoE. 16 The Official electronica Daily In order to bring the embedded world into better harmony with Linux, Glyn has developed the GUI-Linux starter kit “GLYN-GUI” that supports comfortable smartphone operating concepts for industry and is designed to simplify entry into this new world. not be implemented with a controller alone. ● Arrow is offering very extensive support for developers in the form of its embedded platform concept, which contains tools and products from the fields of hardware, software, IP, services and training. Arrow‘s EPC modules have either been developed internally or with the support of external partners to address a broad range of application areas. ● At MEV, demo boards are just one of the many services provided in the “power management” segment. These boards can be tailored specifically to customer requirements or constructed as a general platform capable of covering multiple individual areas. In practice, this results in a wide array of possibilities; one of which is a structure to facilitate design-in supports for Power-over-Ethernet applications with a power supply for 60W device applications. The idea behind it is to demonstrate the performance capability of power supply via PoE. ● MSC has designed its reference kits to include as many functions as possible so that customers can select the options they require. In keeping with this principle, MSC offers proprietary evaluation and reference design kits for architectures like the RX family from Renesas Electronics. One such kit is the VISURDKRX62N-WQVGA, a costsaving, single-chip approach that can be used to directly control TFT displays up to a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels. As implied by its name, the Xynergy Evaluation Board is a bridge between two worlds. ● In order to bring the embedded world into better harmony with Linux, Glyn has developed the GUILinux starter kit “GLYN-GUI” that supports comfortable smartphone operating concepts for industry and is designed to simplify entry into this new world. Linux continues to expand in the embedded sector and has proven to be a good choice, in particular, for ARM-based systems. Glyn developed its starter kit based on computer-on module systems from the manufacturer Ka-Ro. This kit can be used to quickly and easily configure both embedded Linux and embedded Windows systems. Depending on performance requirements, various processor platforms are available as base boards, from ARM9 to Cortex A8 with up to 1.2 GHz. The starter kit can easily be connected to EDT-family TFTs from Glyn. Most reference designs can be ordered as products from the distributors. Prices vary widely as does the complexity of the boards. Future even gives its boards out for free on condition that customers provide proof of a potential project for which the board is suited. Customers, however, must be clear on one point in regard to all development aids: a reference board is not a finished design. Just as the name implies, it is only a kind of sample construction intended to demonstrate functionality. Despite all the many benefits offered by a reference design, neither the distributor nor the manufacturer can provide a functional guarantee. UL approvals and EMC tests, for instance, are usually either not included or are applicable specifically only for the reference structure. As indicated by the examples, many distributor reference designs are created together with one manufacturer. In all honesty, it must be said that selecting reference components is therefore not always entirely independent. The SFX/WSL1149-(x) controller series is compatible with IEEE standard 802.11a/b/g/n. It provides a Triple Stream/Dual Band WLAN interface for theoretical transmission speed up to 450 Mbps, enabling wireless utilisation of the newest Embedded System Access (ESA) technologies for testing, programming and debugging of complex chips, boards, and entire systems. Additionally, the module provides USB2.0 and Gbit Ethernet interfaces. The controller series consists of three models of different perfor- mance classes to be configured by software, enabling TCK frequencies of up to 80 MHz. In combination with additional components of the modular „Scanflex“ product range, such as the „Scanflex TAP Transceiver“ (SFX Transceiver) and „Scanflex I/O modules“ (SFX Modules), WLAN controlled Boundary Scan systems can be configured with up to eight independent parallel TAPs and up to 31 additional analogue or digital functional modules. The wireless operation simplifies handling, providing benefits for remote test, debug and fault diagnosis applications. On this basis, the SFX/ WSL1149-(x) is able to support all technologies for Embedded System Access. “Our goal of continuously expanding the market leadership by our Boundary Scan hardware platform ‚Scanflex‘ is demonstrated by the new controller on WLAN basis”, says Thomas Wenzel, Managing Director of Goepel electronic’s JTAG/Boundary Scan division. “The wireless communication enables considerably more flexible process integration for operations such as remote debugging, centralized control of distributed test and programming systems, or resource splitting between several users in the lab as well as in the production process.” The SFX/WSL1149-(x) controller series will be fully supported in the JTAG/Boundary Scan software platform „System Cascon“ starting from version 4.6.2. Cooling know-how for embedded systems Low power isn’t a panacea Cooling has been a core competence of x86-based, embedded systems providers for years now. With customer preferences often exceeding the realm of the possible, it will also hold true for ARM products. The ARM architecture’s key to success – and what made many mobile applications possible in the first place – is its low power consumption. One welcome side effect of low power consumption is the small amount of waste heat it generates. “Even so, cooling is still a major issue. While the TDP may be lower, there are now new cost pressures,” explains Christian Eder, Marketing Director at congatec. “If you are using an Intel Core i7, the price tag upfront is relatively high and so the cost of a heat pipe solution isn’t all that high. However, the question of heat pipes would be relatively expensive compared with the total price of a low-cost, ARMbased system.” Power-consumption challenges for some longtime ARM users The new, faster ARM processors used for tablets and smartphones are posing new power-consumption challenges for some longtime ARM users. “Whereas waste heat was not an issue for ARM9 and ARM11 customers, the new generation of fast controllers is coming from the consumer sector. They may very well have thermal issues that have to be taken into account,” explains Bodo Huber, Chief Technology Officer at Phytec Messtechnik. “The quad core A9 doesn’t exceed 5 W in the overall design. But even though we aren’t sure about the 20 The Official electronica Daily A15 yet, thermal design work still needs to be carried out. That’s important. If not, it could affect the processor’s lifespan.” It’s not unusual to have to study the application in detail to determine which operating modes have been used. “With dynamic operating conditions and load changes, software support is crucial,” underscores Huber. “So far, we’ve been able to manage with passive cooling alone. Even so, you still have to factor it in.” On the system level there is much more to watch out for For example, heat spreaders are used to distribute and dissipate heat across the surface area in modules designed to be ultra-flat. On the system level, however, there is much more to watch out for. “The processor of ARM systems is often located behind the display. When they are, you have to make sure the heat is transferred to the rear panel and not to the display. If not, the MTBF goes down,” explains Norbert Hauser, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Kontron. “Of course, to find out whether additional cooling is needed – you also have to differentiate between temperature ranges to determine whether it’s for commercial use or industrial use with 40°C to +85°C – even with ARM.” Since smartphones are an important target Klaus Rottmayr, ICP Germany Wolfgang Heinz-Fischer, TQ Group ” System responsibility in the ARM sector is much higher than it is for PCs. ” market for the new ARM chips, its components’ small space requirements play a key role. Though this is also of interest to the embedded sector, there are other factors that have to be taken into account, explains Christian Blersch, Managing Director of E.E.P.D.: “The flip chip will play a increasingly important role in highspeed ARMs in the future. To reach the heat easily, you have to construct a mechanical design for good contacting. That’s what takes the extra time and effort – not the actual cooling itself.” Huber is familiar with another demanding chip construction used for ARM: “Contacting is already a little tricky for package-on-package derivatives. If the memory is loca- ” Whether it’s 5 W or 30 W, you must always look at it from the perspective of the system as a whole. ” ted on the top, it is more difficult to reach the controller and so the heat has to be transferred through the circuit board.” In addition to these challenges, cooling technology has to be able to cope with the trend towards ever flatter and more compact housing. “That chic little plastic case is not the best heat conductor. ARM may not generate much heat, but under continuous operation and with an insulator installed around the outside, it does get hot,” underscores Klaus Rottmayr, General Manager of ICP Germany. “Whether it’s 5 W or 30 W, you must always look at it from the perspective of the system as a whole – after all, some of the components to be cooled are smaller than 10 mm.” Though of almost no relevance to the embedded area so far, haptics is now playing a role. “The user doesn’t touch a device if its temperature is over 40°C, which in this industry isn’t actually all that much,” explains Blersch. “So whether or not a processor has a low heat emission or can handle 100°C is irrelevant. The heat has to be transferred so that users don’t feel any heat when they hold the device. We’ve taken a look at a variety of options for our customers and it can be a real challenge – sometimes, you simply have to tell them it can’t be done the way they want it.” Consumers often talk about devices like the iPad as a benchmark – even so, the success of these devices lies with a certain trick. “What the user doesn‘t realize is that, when it becomes too hot, the tablet PC clocks slower. But, for an industrial customer, you can‘t slow down the computing power,” underscores Blersch. Special real-time software is sensitive to dynamic clock fluctuations because they can alter reaction times. Developers and users also need to know exactly what is feasible and what makes good sense. “System responsibility in the ARM sector is much higher than it is for PCs. With an x86, you buy the components, assemble them and it works – not so in the ARM world,” underscores Wolfgang Heinz-Fischer, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the TQ Group. “ARM customers want to have one person responsible to make sure interfaces work and all drivers are installed so that all they have to do is run their application software.” (mk) n electronica 2012 dataTec Breites Messtechnik-Portfolio dataTec präsentiert ein breites Portfolio an Messtechnik und Stromversorgungen. The very broad portfolio, especially of Epcos products, covers all types of innovative and high-performance DC link capacitors. It also includes an extensive range of transformers, chokes, protection and EMC components as well as much else besides. Almost no devices or equipment still operate on the standard AC line voltage today. Whether in communications and information technology, consumer electronics, industrial electronics or lighting technology – power supplies in the most diverse topologies are omnipresent. Thanks to their high efficiency and broad range of input voltages, switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) are used almost exclusively today. The line inputs of SMPS must be protected from overvoltages and current surges. At the same time, corresponding EMC measures must be taken to ensure interference-free operation. ETFV varistors: overvoltage protection with thermal fuse The risk of voltage fluctuations and dangerous overvoltages is increasing, especially as a result of distributed power generation from wind and solar sources. Reliable operation of these systems is ensured by Epcos varistors, for instance, which make TDK world market leader in overvoltage protection components. The line inputs in particular must be secured against them. Current surges occur especially at the moment of turn-on, when the DC link capacitors are charged. This can lead to undesired triggering of fuses or damage to rectifiers. Help is provided by Epcos NTC thermistors acting as inrush current limiters (ICL). These ceramic components are available for a wide range rated currents. Surge current protection during operation is assured by PTC thermistors. These have a very low resistance in the normal state. Developers can implement a solution optimized for their application on the basis of the most diverse EPCOS technologies. The classics for this purpose include the snap-in types, the previous voltage of 500 V DC was increased to 550 V DC. These significant voltage increases allow developers to connect fewer series capacitors in the DC link, thus reducing both costs and the required insertion space. Interest in high-capacitance film capacitors for DC link solutions is gaining ground among developers. Its long operating life and selfhealing capability makes this technology particularly attractive for applications in which very high demands are made on reliability. Film capacitors are therefore a preferred choice, especially in ballasts for LED lighting. Newcomers to the range are types with higher rated voltages for temperatures of up to 105 °C. Screw-terminal types now feature a rated voltage of 500 V DC instead of 450 V DC as before; for The new Epcos CeraLink offers a completely innovative technology for power supply and converter design. The piezo-ceramic-based CeraLink covers a capacitance range of 1 µF to 100 µF with a rated voltage of 400 V DC. Another type has a rated voltage of 800 V DC and a capacitance of 10 µF. The new CeraLink offers many benefits in the stabilization and filtering of DC link circuits of power converters – especially compared to conventional capacitor technologies: thanks to a low ESL value of less than 4 nH as well as a low series resistance of less than 4 mΩ, this new series is ideally suited for applications with high switching frequencies and rapid rise times. This includes converters for industrial and automo-tive electronics that operate with new fast-switching MOSFETS or IGBTs. CeraLink can be produced with several commonly available terminal configurations, including low profile, SMD, solder pin and pressfit busbar types. Designs that can be integrated in semiconductor power modules are also possible. CeraLink is designed for temperatures between –40 and +125 °C (also up to +150 °C for short periods): thus making it suitable for SiC-based power modules as well. Compared to conventional MLCCs, CeraLink fea-
