Tapio Wirkkala (1915 – 1985) was one of the most significant, influential and successful designers of the twentieth century, embodying Scandinavian Design like no other. His designs for the Iittala glass manufacturer and the silversmiths Kultakeskus Oy, which make up the core of his oeuvre, are introduced for the first time in expert articles, historical photographs and a comprehensive catalogue featuring 249 objects in glass and 80 in silver from the exceptional K akkonen Collection. In 1951, what might best be described as an odd assortment of pieces of art-glass, studio ceramics, and handmade textiles was assembled and put on display in an empty exhibition space with whitewashed walls, display stands created out of sheets of glass and pine panels, and all presented against a backdrop of a huge photomural of a wild and far off landscape. The aura created by this ensemble was one of a celebration of, and homage to, arts and craft values and craftsmanship, and the visual impact of the exhibition was both intriguing and an instant success. The event in question was the Finnish Pavilion at the Milan Triennale in 1951, and the repercussions of the radical and challenging nature of the display were destined to be felt across Europe, the Nordic countries, and America. The curator, designer and actual builder of the exhibition was the Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala. Such was the immediate critical impact and acclaim accorded to exhibition, that Wirkkala and his new ideas became the focus of much discussion and debate in the inter national design press. The result was to present Wirkkala as the key figure in the emergence of what was to become one of the most important design movements in the second half of the twentieth century, that of ‘Scandinavian Modern’ or ‘Scandinavian Design’. Almost immediately Wirkkala became a design superstar, and his perceived creative genius was much sought after by companies in Finland and overseas. Indeed, Wirkkala was to remain a potent and iconic force in international design throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Two very interesting points emerge from the success of the Milan Triennale in 1951. The first was the way in which the international design world almost instantly became fascinated by, and almost obsessed with Wirkkala’s new kind of ascetic aesthetic. The second was the manner in which this specific aesthetic was to rapidly become ascribed by the Finns and others as having a range of potential attributes that focused on a rather mythologized vision of a unique and homogenous Scandinavian identity that could be evidenced through the medium of design. Wirkkala’s perceived oneness with nature and his connection with Lapland and peasant art and folklore were frequently invoked to help foster the Nordic myth that 12 Wirkkala_Inhalt_Imprimatur_210416.indd 12 25.04.16 16:17 Tapio Wirkkala gewann in Mailand 1951 drei Große Preise – für die Ausstellungsarchitektur, die hier abgebildeten Leuchten und seine Schichtholzskulpturen. Tapio Wirkkala won three Grand Prix in Milan in 1951, for exhibition architecture and lamps shown in the picture, and his plywood sculptures. The inspirational photographic studies were more than simply records of objects stacked in rows or generic groupings. Made by centrifugal method. Almost impossible to draw, that you would understand it visually. I make the moulds after Easter. The timetable is made so that it should be in such a shape that it can be exhibited before summer - In the midst of half-melted ice – possibly some of the edges need to be ground. – The problem, I think, is the engraving, as it’s going to weigh between 25–30 kgs. Tapio Wirkkala designed a model for a concert all for his City of the Future. His model for the future city was on display at the Pavilion of the Future. The theme for the exhibition was The World in the Year 2000. The Tapio cutlery series represented the future of cutlery at the World Fair.
