The Eastvalley Pledge
On our wings,
we pledge to do our best,
in our country and in our school.
We fly beyond the common,
being respectful to all people,
in all we do at Eastvalley.

I am delighted to be joining this dynamic school community. Thank you so
much for the warm welcome. It is an honor and privilege to serve the
students, teachers, and parents of such a wonderful neighborhood school.
I am impressed with the high caliber instruction of our teachers, enthusiasm for learning from our students, and dedicated parents who actively
participate in their child’s education.
We are all committed to academic
excellence!
Since I am new to Eastvalley, I would like
to share a little bit about myself. This
is my eighteenth year in education and
thirteenth year with the Cobb County
School District. Prior to moving to Atlanta
in 1996, I taught various grade levels in
New York. I was a fifth grade teacher in
Cobb County before moving into leadership. This is my fifth year in administration. My Bachelor’s Degree is in
Dr. Sage Doolittle, Assistant Principal
Elementary Education and I received a
Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology.
I completed a Specialist’s Degree in Educational Leadership and earned
a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies with a concentration in Educational
Leadership. As you can see, I enjoy being a student as well as being a
teacher and administrator!
When I am not at Eastvalley, I love family time with my husband and son.
My hobbies include cooking, swimming, traveling, and going to football
games.
If I can be of assistance to you or your child, please do not hesitate to
contact me at Eastvalley.

Page A Letter From Our Principal
Dear Eastvalley Parents,
Welcome back to another exciting school year at Eastvalley. We are happy you are returning or that you have
joined the family here. Welcome to our over 60 children
who are new to Eastvalley this year. We have added 2
new Kindergarten classes since the beginning of school.
Please check your child’s bookbag nightly for communicaKaren Wacker, Principal
tion from the school. We are trying to send most flyers and
letters home on Tuesdays this year, but we may have to send something another day and don’t
want you to miss it. Check out our website at www.eastvalleyelementary.com. You can find a lot of
information that you will need there. I have my own blog on the website under the administration
tab. Click on my name and it will take you to the blog. I try to keep you informed of the latest
happenings there. I will also be doing automated call outs periodically to let you know of any
upcoming events.
If you come to Eastvalley during the school day for any reason, please know that we require you
to check in at the office to get a visitor’s badge. This includes the morning when you want to walk
your child to class. We must know who is in our building at all times for the safety of all children
and staff members. Please know that we take your child’s safety seriously and hope that you will
cooperate with this requirement.
If you want to talk to your child’s teacher, please make an appointment with them. Drop in conferences are not allowed in the mornings or afternoons. Teachers have enormous responsibilities in
supervision of students and cannot relinquish those duties. They will be happy to meet with you
at their planning time or later in the afternoon when their supervision duties are over.
Thank you for having your child prepared to come to school! Please let us know if there is anything
that we can do to help you or your child this school year. My email is [email protected].
Have a great year!

National PTA Annual Reflections
“Beauty Is ….”
Tell us what beauty is to you in the form of art, music, dance, video, photography or writing! You are encouraged to participate in Reflections, the National PTA-sponsored cultural arts program.
Eastvalley artists may submit entries in any or all of six art areas: literature, musical composition,
photography, visual arts, film/video production or dance choreography.
Entries must reflect the student’s own interpretation of the theme “Beauty Is …” and adhere to the program rules established by the National PTA. You can find the Reflections program rules and entry forms
in Spanish and English on the Eastvalley PTA website (www.eastvalleypta.org). A copy of these guidelines
and entry forms will be available outside of the office as well.
The deadline for submitting entries to the Reflections collection box in the Media Center is Friday,
September 25th. Volunteers from the community with expertise in each art area will select our Eastvalley
winners. All participants will receive certificates and winners will be honored at a special evening reception
in October.

Page A Letter From our Eastvalley PTA Presidents
Hey Families,
Welcome back to our little school with a big heart. It was wonderful to see all the familiar faces
and to welcome some new ones at both orientations. The school year is off to a wonderful start
and everyone is falling into a nice routine. A big thank you to all that have joined the PTA and
made such generous donations.
Remember, it’s never too late to join the PTA! We encourage you to buy memberships for each
person in your family for just $5 each. Your $5 will help fund programs such as Art Print, Fall
Festival, International Night, Eastvalley Reading Club (EVRC), Science Day, Math Club (E=MC2)
and many other wonderful activities. New this year, the Father/Son, Mother/Son, and other feebased events will offer a discounted charge for PTA members only to show our appreciation.
Your membership also entitles you to discounts at some local merchants and national vendors.
Currently our membership is up 15% from last year and we have met two major goals set by
the Georgia PTA and The National PTA – we are on a roll, so let’s keep it going!
In addition to your PTA membership we need volunteers to help with the fun events and
educational programs at our school. Be sure to check out the Eastvalley PTA website at
www.eastvalleypta.org to see where help is needed, and contact our Volunteer Coordinator
Jyl Ozkan at [email protected] if you have time and talents to donate! It doesn’t have to
be a big commitment, just tell us how much time you have to offer, we will find the right fit for you.
First call for volunteers will be our Fabulous Fall Festival…Saturday October 3rd from 11:00-3:00.
You can sign up via the website, or email Doreen Waugaman, [email protected].
This is going to be a great year!

Page Box Tops For Education
The Box Tops For Education program is an ongoing fundraiser that is run through the Eastvalley
PTA. There are two main ways to participate:
ONE: CLIP AND SAVE the small pink “box tops” found on hundreds
of products in grocery, discount, and club stores. There is no need
to buy anything you wouldn’t ordinarily use, just check your groceries
to see if they have a box top on them. When you find one, cut it out
and put it into a zip lock baggie or an envelope. Save these box tops
and when we have our Fall Collection Drive in October, your child
can bring them in to the school. You might even want to encourage your extended family and
friends to clip and save for you. Each box top is worth 10 cents for Eastvalley! They really add
up - last year we were able to raise over $1,000 for the PTA!
TWO: Shop online at the BOX TOPS MARKETPLACE. Go to btfe.com and you can shop at
more than 100 retailers. Target and Lands End are just a couple of the stores you can browse
through. A percentage of all qualifying purchases will be credited to Eastvalley. It’s simple! Also
on the website, you can enter drawings to win thousands of additional box tops for Eastvalley.
If you have any questions, please email Trayece Watts at [email protected].
Thank you to all of the families who help make Eastvalley the wonderful school that it is. We are
looking forward to another great year!
Fall Fundraiser Thank You
A big thank you to all the students and families who went bananas and sold Sally Foster products,
magazines and Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough! We’ll let you know
how much we raised and who the top sellers are in next month’s
newsletter.
The Eastvalley Foundation plans to use the money raised to purchase five Smart Response Systems for the school’s Smart
Boards.
