Faculty from these disciplines have worked together with English and Counseling faculty to develop a series of contextualized workshops to teach essential skills for their respective disciplines. Through these workshops, students can learn the reading, writing, study, and learning skills they need to be successful in their courses. These contextualized workshops have been specifically designed to address the most important success skills for that subject, and the modules are taught within the context of these disciplines. Content instructors and guest speakers from academic and student support centers across the campus teach students topics such as Time Management, Critical Thinking, Making Sense of Course Readings, Discipline-Specific Writing Skills, Effective Note-Taking, Identifying and Applying Learning Styles, and Using Campus Resources. Philosophy offers students a semester long, one-unit class to learn these skills. Art History, Psychology, and Physics offer open access workshops, where students can attend weekly workshops or just attend the topics of most interest to them. All students and majors are welcome to attend any of the workshops and courses. Student of the Month: Amanda Carvalho Machado is an international student from Brazil. At first, it was hard for Amanda to leave her family and home and move to the U.S. to pursue her education. However, the support and motivation she received from Pierce College faculty and counselors helped her thrive as she pursued her passion for travel and new cultures. Amanda received a certificate in International Business from Pierce and is currently pursing a degree in Recreational Tourist Management at CSUN. Her dream is to travel and work around the world in the hospitality sector. Amanda learned about the Classroom Success Series while working as a student worker in the International Students Office. Professor Jill Cohen walked in with some flyers advertising the program; Amanda picked one up and decided to give it a try. As an international student, Amanda felt the pressure of needing to pass all her classes in order to continue her education in the U.S., so she decided to take advantage of all the help available to her. Amanda says the program was a great experience in which she learned valuable skills for college success. The workshops helped her improve her note-taking skills, prepare for exams, and prioritize her tasks. Through this series, Amanda visited the library, where she learned from a librarian how to conduct a search. Professor Cohen also taught her how to format her papers in APA style. These are skills she still uses today in her CSUN courses. Amanda says the time management workshop was the most useful because she learned to her organize herself better and make lists of all that she has to accomplish. Amanda’s advice to faculty is to take the time to build different approaches to different students because each student comes with unique experiences, needs, and levels of motivation. Also, she would like faculty to know that students are not always aware of the services available to them. When faculty see that students need help, they have an opportunity to connect them to a service or tool that will help them improve. Would you like to learn more?
