These assessments are based on clear expectations for all learners, consistent with those described in The Ontario Curriculum. The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning. Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments, classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests. Schools use assessment information and information from other sources to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments, teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way, schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students. + , % ,8 , 9 LITERACY INITIATIVES TECHNOLOGY PLANNING Preparation for the grade 10 literacy test includes a school-wide simulation in all periods over two days in each grade 10 class. Those students who must re-write the literacy test are given special clinics in reading and writing to prepare them for their next opportunity to write the test. The technology and business departments have installed computer labs with state-of-the-art computers this year. Improved technology is a current thrust within the school in various departments. In addition to the new technology, West Hill C.I. offers a comprehensive technological program in many of the traditional trades including, automotive mechanics, carpentry and tool and die making. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (O.Y.A.P.) is available through Co-Op Education courses. All departments in the school will receive specific information to include in their curricula to assist students to become better readers and writers. Professional development has been conducted for staff to promote literacy. Relax and Read ("R and R") is our school wide reading opportunity where all staff and students read for 20 minutes each day. We have installed a Reading 180 Lab to assist our reluctant readers and our ESL students to improve their Literacy skills and develop a love for reading! NUMERACY INITIATIVES West Hill C.I. supports its numeracy initiatives with a comprehensive remediation program, an excellent student-teacher ratio in its junior classes and outstanding technology. Students requiring additional support are identified by our guidance and mathematics departments. Their placements are reviewed and a plan for success is put in place. Our mathematics department has a fully equipped computer lab that is loaded with a wide range of software to support our mathematics courses. The Learning Equation which provides remedial support and enrichment activities for our grade nine students is only one example of the resources available. Our special education department provides additional support on a small group and one-on-one basis. West Hill Collegiate Institute School Year: 2009-2010 STUDENT LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES West Hill C.I. continues to encourage its students to develop leadership skills by offering a range of opportunities where students can display their initiative and creativity to enhance the school's learning environment.
