PROJECTS
SMARTPHONES FOR SENIORS
Smartphones for Seniors (S4S), is a Portuguese collaborative R&D project coordinated by
Microsoft, which aims to provide more adapted technology to the senior population in
mobile scenarios, by customizing the user interfaces of the basic functions of a Windows
Phone 7 smartphone. It also includes the redesign of more advanced tools such as video
calling and communication with social media in order to allow remote interaction with
users of social networks, as well as synchronous or asynchronous conversation, covering
also audiovisual communication.
Page 11
Role in project: Development of the Windows Mobile 7.1 application XisQue. The
application utilizes a specialized service which allows senior citizens to ask questions using
natural language patterns. The system retrieves the five most relevant results. Emphasis
was given to the design, abiding to Microsoft's Modern UI design paradigms, while keeping
the utmost concern for the intrinsic requirements of the target population.
AA10
Usability evaluation of the A10’s (Android smart-phone) configuration system. The project
involved Caixa Magica (company that offers technological robust solutions based on Open
Source Software to the domestic and enterprise market) and Sapo (a Portuguese internet
service provider).
Role in project: assisting senior researchers during the experimental period, observing
subjects and taking notes.
AAA
ANACOM (Portuguese regulator for telecommunication companies) website accessibility
evaluation. Accessibility study with 50 individuals with a diversity of mild to severe
impairments (e.g. motor, vision). The project lasted from November 2009 until April 2010.
Role in project: conducting experiments and assisting senior researchers by observing
subjects and taking annotations addressing their interaction patterns, hesitations and
difficulties originating from poor accessibility in the assessed website. Tools used within
this project included Morae usability testing software and a Portuguese speech synthesis
application.
INSITHE
This project aims at providing a solution for mobile, time/space distributed, therapy
sessions, complementing SCOPE and JoinTS projects. SCOPE targeted psychological
diagnosis, thus covering part of the therapist´ homework, namely patient-data management
and analysis. JoinTS provided enhanced homework tools that allow patients to fill
multifaceted static artifacts and enable therapists to create them. It also addressed groupsessions, in different controlled-setting arrangements, but within the "same-time/sameplace" scenario. InSiThe expands the Information and Communication (IC) platform of
JoinTS, to cope with remote and outdoors settings. It will contribute to a definitive set of
models, a specification language and an IC platform that fully covers CBT in all scenarios.
The definition of new therapeutic approaches, supported by the adequate technology,
particularly for the envisioned scenarios is also a major goal.
Page 12
Role in project: Assistance in prototyping mobile and desktop applications, designing the
system's architecture and designing trials and experimental periods. Supervision of a total
of 3 students who carried their MSc thesis in the context of this project.
JOINTS
JoinTS (Joint psychological TherapieS) is a project that aims at providing extended support
to psychotherapy processes that focus patients’ autonomy, activity and self-regulation. It
provides coverage of the patient centred activities through different settings and utilizing
emerging technologies. The computational support will also aim at facilitating group
therapy and therapist collaboration. In a word, the project stands on joint therapy
processes.
Role in project: Develop an in-session collaborative monitoring tool for therapists, enabling
them to observe patients' activities during co-located meetings. The development
encompassed the creation of a flexible communication library which feature a set of
modules for group management, communication and publish / subscription services.
SCOPE
SCOPE's (Supporting Cognition Outlines on Psychological Evaluation) main objective is the
definition of computer support for psychological assessment, diagnosis and therapy
processes. SCOPE supports psychotherapy processes through the use of adequate cognitive
mapping tools, based on emerging interaction techniques and systems and on new and
adaptive visualization approaches, which naturally integrate the interview, analysis and
diagnosis process. The computational support aims at helping therapists delineate the
cognitive organization and the dysfunctional cognitive processes of the patient, through
cognitive and narrative approaches; as well as the patients work throughout the entire
therapy process.
Role in project: Develop a set of mobile applications capable of interpreting digital artefacts'
specification and create the corresponding visual representation. This process also included
the development of a logging engine capable of recording all interactions performed with
each digital artefact. A log-player tool was also developed allowing therapists to visualize all
patients' interactions with the artefacts.
