Portuguese Bar Association pays tribute to
Americo Ventura for half century of work
I
t all started with bottles of wine, bowls of rice pudding and
platters of “chouriço” (Portuguese sausage.) These were
some of the goods used as payment for legal work from folks
who could not afford to pay a lawyer. It was through bartering
his services that the young Americo S. Ventura began to give
back to the community for the many opportunities he had found
here.
Half a century later, the Danbury community knows Américo Ventura well, along with his good deeds that have touched so
many lives. And for that reason, the community has thanked him
in so many ways, from awards to plaques and trophies, and even
naming an entire library after him. In 2007, Ventura received one
of the most important awards in his profession.
The Connecticut Bar Association honored him in Hartford
as one of the few attorneys who are still practicing law after 50
years.
His work in Danbury
Américo S. Ventura was born in Danbury, raised within
a growing Portuguese community. His parents were immigrants
from the Northeast region of Portugal. When he was a child, Ventura dreamed high, while working in his father’s grocery store.
And nothing could keep him from becoming the first child in the
local Portuguese community to graduate from college. After
serving in the U.S. Army between 1946 and 1949, and finishing
his studies at Georgetown University, Ventura went on to Boston
University, seeking a law degree.
After finishing law school, Ventura did not even entertain
the possibility of pursuing a career away from home. It was here,
in Danbury, that he wanted to practice law. And he certainly did
– moving up from the position of Assistant Prosecutor in the
city court to Chief Prosecutor of the Circuit Court of the State
of Connecticut. Later, Ventura became a founding member of

According to Rute Mendes, one of
the lawyers at the firm, it’s an inspiration to

firsthand how much he truly cares about all
of his clients. “He is still the first attorney
in every morning and stays throughout the
day, even if he has no appointments, just in
case a client calls or comes in and needs his
help,” she said.
In the Greater Danbury area, Ventura’s community work includes, among other
things, being a founding member of the Sons

T
udo começou com vinho, arroz doce e chouriço. Este era
o pagamento que ele concordava em receber daqueles
que não podiam arcar com os custos do trabalho de um
advogado. Foi assim que em 1957, o jovem advogado
Américo S. Ventura começou a retribuir à sua comunidade as
oportunidades que aqui conquistára. Cinqüenta anos mais tarde, a comunidade de Danbury conhece Ventura tão bem quanto
suas boas ações, que tocaram tantas vidas. E por esta razão, a
comunidade tem demonstrado de várias maneiras sua gratidão
- de placas a troféus, e até mesmo batizando uma biblioteca
com seu nome. Em 2007, Ventura recebeu um dos prêmios mais
importantes em sua profissão, a Associação dos Advogados de
Connecticut o homenageou em Hartford como um dos poucos
advogados que continua praticando o direito após 50 anos de
carreira.
Trabalho em Danbury
Américo S. Ventura nasceu em Danbury, e foi criado em
meio à sua crescente comunidade portuguesa. Seus pais eram
imigrantes da região nordeste de Portugal. Quando criança,
Ventura sonhava mais alto enquanto trabalhava na mercearia de
seu pai. E nada podia impedí-lo de ser uma das primeiras crianças da comunidade portuguesa local a formar-se na faculdade.
Após servir no Exército dos EUA entre 1946 e 1949 e concluir
seus estudos na Universidade de Georgetown, , Ventura foi para
a Universidade de Boston para estudar a faculdade de direito.
Após formar-se, Ventura não cogitou a possibilidade de obter
sucesso longe de casa. Foi em Danbury que ele decidiu praticar o direito. Na cidade ele começou a carreira como Assistente
de Promotoria no tribunal local, e logo depois passou a Chefe
da Promotoria Pública na Comarca do Estado de Connecticut.
Mais tarde, Ventura tornou-se o fundador da Ventura, Ribeiro &
Smith, uma firma de advocacia especializada em casos de Acidente Pessoal, Criminal e Imóveis. Hoje, a empresa conta com
dez advogados, muitos dos quais são fluentes em português e
espanhol. De acordo com Rute Mendes, uma das advogadas
