Besides a stage adaptation, the book was adapted into a successful film directed by João Falcão and awarded a prize at Rio Film Festival. Beatriz Bracher Black Music Antonio Michael Philips is in his way to be a seven-footer, when he is kidnapped by a gang of Rio de Janeiro’s drug dealers. Seeing at stake his dreams of playing basketball and studying trumpet at the same university attended by his idol Michael Jordan, his passion for jazz begins to captivate both the chief dealer, a 17 years old white boy who dreams of becoming a gansta rap star, and the captivity’s cooker, a 16 years old mulatto girl who loves to dance at one of Rio’s famous bailes funk. Benjamim is about to become a father, and discovers a family secret. He then decides to find out how everything happened from the ones involved. Three of them – his grandmother, Isabel; Haroldo, his grandfather’s friend; and Raul, his parents’ friend – will tell him their versions of the facts, and by gathering these pieces of memory, Benjamim will solve the puzzle of the history of his family. In this polyphonic narrative, Beatriz articulates general and private, individual and historical, building characters that are simultaneously unique and identifiable in their social context. Both protagonist and reader are moved listeners to the story. RIGHTS SOLD: PORTUGAL (QUETZAL); FRANCE (ASPHALTE) Cintia Moscovich Dodô Azevedo Claudia Tajes Why Am I Fat, Mommy?/ Vengeful / Por isso eu Por que sou gorda, sou vingativa mamãe? A writer puts on forty-eight and a half pounds in only four years. How could she have completely lost control of her own body and never even realize it? Could the roots of the problem lie in her past, in the family history, in all the love - and hate - shared by children and their parents? These are the questions that guide journalist Cíntia Moscovich’s highly praised novel. As the narrator searches for the reasons why she put on so much weight so quickly, she embarks on a journey through memory focused on her Jewish family of European immigrants, and especially on her strained relationship with her mother. At the end of this very personal and often painful journey, not only does she find her own lost body, but also the strength to become a full-fledged writer. On The Road Again / Fé na estrada Fé na Estrada tells the story of Eduardo and Mariana, alter egos of writer Dodô Azevedo and photographer Luiza Leite, who decided to revisit the route American writer Jack Kerouac covered in the 1950s, leading to the classic On the Road. They aimed at finding what still lingered of beatnik and countercultural in 21st Century America. Inexperienced in the travelling field and with little money on their pockets, the task proved to be an adventure. Whether it be Navajo Indians, hallucinations with peyote tea or federal agents mistaking the author for an Arab terrorist, everything that happens with the foreigners during this unpredictable journey put them face to face with mixed feelings - deep hatred and love - for the American culture. Vengeful addresses a recurring wish for most people, seldom fulfilled: to take revenge for the humiliation and injuries they have suffered. Sara Gomes, the leading character, owner of a bankrupt laundry service store, lists eight men that, from her point of view, despised her in the past, and moves on to revenge. Will this all pay off? Claudia Tajes leaves it for the reader to decide. RIGHTS SOLD: ITALY (CAVALLO DI FERRO) Flavia Lins e Silva Flavio Carneiro João Anzanello Carrascoza João Anzanello Carrascoza Aos sete e aos quarenta Pilar’s Diary Of Greece / Diário de Pilar na Grécia The Championship / O campeonato At Seven And At Forty / Aos sete e aos quarenta Pilar loves travelling. Her series of books is well known in Brazil. Now she keeps a diary, describing every moment of her first adventure. She grew up without her dad, in her grandpa’s house. When Pilar’s grandpa goes to Greece and she hears that he is never coming back, she cannot accept it and wishes she could go after him. With a magic hammock, she and her best friend Breno travel to Greece and meet several gods along the way. But life among them isn’t easy and no one will ever be the same after this adventure. Pilar’s Diary of Greece is charmingly illustrated by Joana Penna – the Agency’s first represented illustrator. André will not settle down professionally due to his uncontrollable compulsion to reading detective novels. Inspired by characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, he decides to take a detective distance course which will send him into a bizarre investigation of a competition called “The Championship”. André goes through streets and bars in Rio de Janeiro, and is Flavio Carneiro’s homage to the city, as well as to mystery novels, and to his favourite authors – Rubem Fonseca, especially. The book’s protagonist, all in all, is the detective novel itself, object of passion of heroes and criminals. Carrascoza’s first novel At Seven and At Forty reveals the experiences of a man in two seminal periods of human existence. The first part, in the 1970’s, shows the character at his coming of age, living in a small Brazilian town in which rural culture prevails. Back then he exercises a discovery look. It is dream time. In the other part, at his forties, in 2010, he lives in a big city, impacted by media and its ways to make everything spectacular, and sees himself before an inventory of his own experiences. It is reason time. Livia Garcia-Roza Letícia Wierzchowski The Getka / Os Getka Liliana’s Notebook / Caderno de Liliana Andrzej is a writer who wants to find a start to his new book after the end of his marriage. Trying to write, his memories take him to when he was a boy and spent the summers with the family in a desert beach. Their summers were shared with the Getka, and there was Lylia, the brave and beautiful youngest daughter of the Getkas. Fantasy and reality, past and present, show that life is capricious: the doors it opens may close with no previous warning, and no compass can ever make sure we will reach the destination of our dreams. The Angel and the Rest of Us / O Anjo e o resto de nós About to become a TV series, the book unveils the difficulties, hates, loves, controversies and tragedies in a family saga beautifully told through generations. Luis Fernando Verissimo Liliana’s house grew bigger and turned into a complete mess without her mother. Roque and Peu, the girl’s brothers, are always up to something. Her father has no time for the kids. Her aunt and her grandmother do not listen to her. And Jacyra, the maid, is always busy cleaning or doing laundry. Liliana then learns that living without a mother is “terrible” and that she has to find a way to deal with her absence. It is through everyday life, speech and writing at a compass of a child, that this literary and spontaneous narrative on learning, growing up, losing the ones we love, and reorganising our affections is built. In this sensitive story, with touches of humour, Livia’s fiction is unveiled in its best shape. Luiz Eduardo Soares Somewhere In Paradise / Em Algum Lugar do Paraíso Justice / Justiça From our fantasies on the first man on earth to our anguish on the inevitable passage of time, Verissimo makes us laugh with his sophisticated humour and great narrative elegance. It is paradise: the talent of one of the most respected Brazilian writers in irresistible chronicles about time, love, and lost opportunities – as well as those that might still be taken. Based on a conversation with a taxi driver who was shocked by the news of a colleague’s murder during a robbery, Soares attempts to dissolve certainties of common sense in his new book. What exactly is violence? Is there a relationship between a committed crime and the punishment applied? Would Human Rights defence stimulate impunity? The author goes to the core of these and other issues. Elite Squad 2 – Graphic novel / Elite da Tropa 2 – Graphic novel The graphic novel adaptation of Elite Squad 2 counts with the collaboration of graphic artist Marcus Wagner and revisits themes and characters from Elite Squad (Objetiva, 2006) as well as from Elite Squad 2 (Nova Fronteira, 2010) and the homonymous films. LLya Luft Marcelo Ferroni Maria Tereza Maldonado Practical The World´S Wealth / A Riqueza do Mundo With a 30-year trajectory in Literature and more than 20 books published, novelist, poet, translator and essayist Lya Luft is one of the biggest Brazilian editorial prodigies of our times, with more than 1.2 million copies sold. The surprising essay book Losses and Gains, a gigantic success with rights sold in many countries, was at the top the Brazilian bestselling list for 113 weeks. The World’s Wealth is dry and poetic at the same time. Lya tackles human existential issues, our perplexities, education, family, authority, morality versus moralism, and some of the most pungent problems of our society: wars, poverty, politics, to name a few. Guerrilla Warfare: A Manual / Método Prático da Guerrilha The name Che Guevara is not unfamiliar, but few know the details that led to his downfall in 1966 and 1967. Isolated in Tanzania and depressed with the recent guerrilla failure in the Congo, he gathers his most faithful followers to plot a new revolution. His goal is now Bolivia. Tired of the Cuban bureaucracy, he wants things done his way: no deals, no concessions, and with the unbeatable method he himself created. Practical Guerrilla Warfare is a work of fiction. It is a novel of ambition and madness based on true events — the last revolutionary expedition of Che Guevara —, but which subverts documented history, recreating characters and scenarios. It’s also a love story, and a pastiche, of the few who remained by the fighter’s side until his final moments. The Hidden Side / A Face Oculta Humiliation, hostility and defamation compose a three-term equation named bullying or cyberbullying. Luciana knows this well enough. She stays up late on the computer, chatting with friends, and when Marcelo chooses her as his target and starts to send her offensive messages through her mobile phone, she does not know how to deal with this unknown enemy. RIGHTS SOLD: GERMANY (SUHRKAMP); ITALY (MONDADORI); PORTUGAL (DOM QUIXOTE); SPAIN (ALFAGUARA) Paulo Roberto Pires Marina Colasanti Maria Valéria Rezende The Flight Of The Red Ibis / O Voo da Guará Vermelha Maria Valéria’s first novel is the tale of an unlikely and deeply moving love between an illiterate construction worker in São Paulo and an HIVpositive prostitute who has lost the will to live. He needs someone to listen to the stories he has to tell – even though he doesn’t know how to read or write; she in turn needs someone who can truly love her. Together, these two anonymous and invisible people weave a beautiful tale about the need for affection that afflicts people in the modern world. In a truly original voice, the author draws inspiration from classical references such as Thousand and One Nights as well as from the pace and language of cordel, a traditional style of popular writing very common in north-eastern Brazil. My War Of Theirs / Minha guerra alheia If One Of Us Die / Se um de nós morrer In this moving memoir whose reminiscences shift from dramatic to sweet, historical to emotive, Marina tells of WWII seen through the eyes of a child. The book opens with her parent’s wedding, travels to Africa with her family, the years in Italy during the War, and watches their arrival to Brazil. The author highlights the inner strength of the women around her, like her mother and her babysitter, who kept their heads up in the hardest circumstances. Her father, a happy and generous man, volunteered at the war. Marina tries to grasp the source of his passion, and this questioning and the consequences of the conflict in her family’s life are the substance with which she crafts this outstanding book. Théo, traumatised with the failure of his first book and paralised by his incapacity to write a second book, dies without getting rid of the destructive impulse of writing. After a torrid and passionate night with his ex-girlfriend, she finds him dead on his bed after coming back to get the mobile phone she had left. In a red envelope wrapped in plastic paper he left on the drawer, the inscription - ‘To Sofia’. Sofia must fulfill his last wish – send to Catalan writer Enrique Vila-Matas some sort of legacy of anguish – manuscripts of a book that has never existed. So as to accomplish the mission, she goes to Paraty, where the 2005 edition of the International Literary Festival of Paraty (FLIP) is being held and of which Vila-Matas is one of the invited authors. Marcelo, an architect expert in old buildings, was hired to coordinate the works. His mission was to make the theater look exactly as it looked on its first day. Marcelo was a widower with a daughter, Anabela, who had a scary meeting with a ghost right at the first day of the renovation work. That was the ghost of a young girl, a dancer, who used to appear in the theatre. Anabela then embarked on a journey to the past days of that place and got involved in a story of love, revenge and mysteries, carried by the cold breath and the diaphanous presence of the ghost dancer, who would only be free after sorting out, with Anabela’s help, something important that she wasn’t able to do in life. Down In The Hole / No Buraco Tony Bellotto is a rock musician and writer – his new book, Down in the Hole, is in the intersection of Tony’s two main talents. Narrated in first person, the book tells the misadventures of Teo Zanquis, a decadent rocker in his fifties who took part of a one hit band in the 1980s. He tells of his frantic life on the road, in the golden times, and of his recent passion for a young Korean girl he met at a record shop in São Paulo. With extraordinary dialogues, the story is full of humour, sex, drugs, and rock’ n roll. There are many musical references from the 1980s and backwards, which may spark varied (and pleasant) doses of nostalgia.
