Conversation between Marina Coelho and Andreas Marti on March 13, 2013, regarding the exhibition held at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo in March 2013. Marina Coelho: Would you like to tell me about how art began in your life? Maybe you can briefly explain how you came to study art, and your first contact with art? Andreas Marti: I got into art school in Zurich years ago. I got in, but I was always sure that I wouldn’t be an artist. I just wanted to try to study there, but not as an artist. I had a friend there and we decided that we didn’t want to be artists at the end. I was twenty five or twenty four. Before that I had been doing something else, but it became more and more important for me to get into this art school. I wanted to be in contact with art, but not really to be involved as an artist. MC: When did art become your main activity? AM: Well after studying for four years, I rented a studio space, so that was the beginning of producing art. But I was always in a state of confusion: ‘What do I want to do here? What is the future?’ So I was never working directly on my artwork. I always produced but I didn’t show for a long time, because I was too shy to show and to speak about my work, and to be involved in the art scene. MC: What kind of work were you producing at the time? AM: At the time I was a photographer, using a camera obscura. I’ve done a lot of photographic work with hidden cameras. Looking back now, I see that the way in which I used this camera was also a hidden way of producing art and not showing art. I used to put this camera obscura – just a metal box with a hole in it – on tables, and I would take pictures in a hidden, secretive way, because I was really too shy to take a usual camera to attack someone or a scene or whatever. It was really like placing the camera next to the coffee cup, taking a picture, then putting it away again and nobody would see it. And this is hidden until now, as I have never shown many of these pieces. MC: Were you mainly taking pictures of daily life? AM: Yes, but not only. It was always connected to people, and people I wouldn’t really have focused on with a regular camera. MC: That’s so nice! I would like to see some of them some time. AM: Yes, there are many... MC: But then there was a big switch when you started to use the studio as a space to make exhibitions of other artists? AM: Well, that was quite a long time later. In the beginning I only had a few shows. I think the first time that I participated in a show was only five years after I started the space. I also had no possibilities… it was ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 3/13 | 4 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Making of AM: Bem, isso foi muito tempo depois. No começo, eu fazia apenas algumas exposições. Eu estava muito envolvido com esta jovem e ativa cena, mas também conhecia o que estava acontecendo dez ou quinze anos atrás, com a geração mais velha. really difficult for me to get in, and I wasn’t very pushy about getting a show. It was really good for me to be in the background and not show myself too much. MC: You were not trying to find a gallery or something like that? AM: Not at that moment. I was always observing what was going on, and I knew all the people, but they never knew me. I really followed what was going on. And after that, when I studied art and met many young artists, it was very nice to have this background. I was very involved in this active young scene, but also knowing what had been going on ten or fifteen years ago, with the older generation. MC: So, about your work specifically, have you been making this kind of work that you are doing now for a long time, or does your practice change a lot over time? AM: Well, with the photography I really arrived at a point at which I couldn’t really continue. I thought that it wasn’t really my way of producing art. That was the main reason that I began to study art. Until then, I had never really been accepted by the art scene, I had never exhibited at a gallery – once I won a prize but – I was really unsure of my personal work. And after studying art, I was influenced by different approaches, and it was really good for me to include that in my form of artwork. MC: So you changed your work a lot. Although image is still alive in you work, through the drawings that you make, you also started to do three dimensional pieces and think more about art in the space. AM: Well, I also did some wall drawings at that time, from time to time or more and more for applications for art awards. So it’s not a new thing for me to include the space. I was already using the walls as a canvas. MC: When did you graduate, 2008? Fizemos a primeira exposição e então AM: Yes, it was really late. I was quite an old student at that point, and my friends were quite young [laughs]. It was almost the next generation. MC: So how did Dienstgebäude start? Did it emerge as an art space already, or was it an art studio where you were inviting other people to show? AM: Well it started at the same building where we had our studio. We did the first exhibition and then I thought of following it with several shows with friends, and that was the beginning of Dienstgebäude. MC: And at that time when you were showing your work, were you already making these kind of pieces that you have been making in the last few years? Like the ones that you did for KUNSTHALLE São Paulo now, with paper, and stacks? AM: Yes, there were several works included in that show that were not just drawings or photography, there were also installations. Talvez isso esteja MC: I see that your work has two natures: one is very linked to natural science, like the drawings; and the other is linked to construction, architecture - it’s much more mathematical somehow. Do you think that you have a theoretical background, or something that inspires you? AM: i don’t work in an emotional way. I have a very conceptual approach. Maybe it is connected to the way that I organize Dienstgebäude, working for or thinking about what’s the best way to improve. MC: How do you select the artists that you show there? Is it by the kind of art they produce, or is it because you already know them? AM: It works more and more based on what kind of art I like to show. At the beginning it was more mixed and we invited a lot of people, also curators, and then more and more it became clearer what kind of art I wanted to show. Mas eu MC: And what is that, more or less? AM: Well, it’s very difficult to explain. It’s a really strong feeling. It’s very rare that it’s a good friend. Sometimes it’s very different from my own work and I really support this totally different type of work, and sometimes it’s very close to my work. But I really can’t say why this and why not that. MC: So it’s really something that you know, just by yourself, there isn’t really an explanation... So people who show in the space, they usually apply to exhibit? AM: I get more and more applications to have a show in our space. But it’s a difficult thing because maybe 95% of them are not really my style, they don’t really understand what I am doing. I look around and I select - maybe once or twice I have selected people who made an application. It also happens in galleries – they get a lot of applications, but usually it’s not the way to get in. E sobre MC: Yes, I know… People arrive with the works in their hands – ‘hi, I want to show’, but it doesn’t usually happen that way. What about the relationship that you have with the artists? Do they show only once, or can they become regulars? As you are not a gallery, you are not representing them. Do they come back ever? AM: Well, it’s not possible at the moment to make a second show at the space, but it could be possible to include a work in a group show. I also get asked by curators which artists might be interesting for particular shows, so I point to my favorites, that’s for sure. It is happening more and more that these artists are recommended by me in a kind of collaboration with foreign spaces or foreign institutions. MC: So, you’re also working as a curator then? AM: Well, it’s a mixture. I’m not really a curator, I’m just connecting a lot of people and a lot of artists to other people, and they really support and believe in us. Alguma vez eles voltam a expor? Cells and crystals series (1 - 8), 2013 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Issue # 3/13 | 11 Dreams don’t grow old ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// AM: Sim, claro, claro! MC: Yes, maybe we should collaborate? AM: Yes, KUNSTHALLE São Paulo and Dienstgebäude! MC: I hope you have had a good impression about your show here, and the organization. AM: Yes, sure, sure! MC: So about the pieces you chose for KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, would you like to say something about them? AM: I brought different possibilities with me. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, as I couldn’t really read how the space works from images. I took several options with me, and also thought of some new pieces, that would be possible to do on site. One major thing is that I chose work I could handle with the transport. These are mostly site-specific installations, so I didn’t have this problem of exporting and importing, and all of these costs. I think it also makes the show more interesting if the type of work includes the space, instead of just bringing an art piece into it and finding that it doesn’t really fit together. That’s the best way to make a show: to have different possibilities; to incorporate the space in the works; and to choose on-site, seeing what is possible and what is not. It is also important to have time to do that. Not to just arrive and put some images on the wall. MC: Yes, to feel a bit about, not the space itself, but also about the way people would react to it. AM: Well, for sure the time was too short to really include what is going on in the surroundings. Probably, I would do a different show if I started today. MC: And what’s next now, after arriving back in Zurich? AM: I have to organize the next show at Dienstgebäude, and soon I have a gallery show in Autumn, in November I think. MC: Em Zurique? MC: In Zurich? ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Issue # 3/13 | 12 Dreams don’t grow old ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Crèpes do artista no vernisage / Crèpes by the artist at the vernissage AM: Sim. Eu realmente tenho que trabalhar nisso e tomar decisões. AM: Yes. I really have to work on that and make some decisions. MC: So from time to time you do work with galleries? AM: Yes, I do more and more. If it’s a good gallery I really like to do that. MC: But it’s not that they are representing you, is it? AM: It depends a little bit on whether it’s a good collaboration. But they have to accept that I have Dienstgebäude and I won’t give it away. Dienstgebäude is not a gallery and I’m part of it. I can collaborate with another gallery, fine, but usually there is a point where galleries have a problem, because they all want everything [laughs], and I don’t give everything. MC: Bem, eu acho que terminamos. Obrigada! MC: So, I think we are done. Thank you! AM: Obrigado! AM: Thank you! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 3/13 | 13 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// LX92 #2 Andreas Marti Cutting the Detour Dando continuidade ao projeto LX92, KUNSTHALLE São Paulo convida o artista suíço Andreas Marti (Zurich, Suíça. 1967) para apresentar a exposição Cutting the Detour. Continuing the project LX92, KUNSTHALLE São Paulo invites Swiss artist Andreas Marti (Zurich, Switzerland. 1967) to present the exhibition Cutting the Detour. The investigation of reality is not just a question for science, but also a wide range of possibilities for discussions and approaches for art, as since long, the representation of reality through artistic means, is one of the main aims of art. Thus, Andreas Marti dissects reality through precise means, as a scientist questing his research and investigations. Moving between the spheres of conceptual and minimalist art, and incorporating features of scientific procedures, the artist creates for exhibition Cutting the Detour the objects and installations that dialogue with the architecture of the exhibition space and emphasize aspects usually ignored. What interests Marti is to find out possibilities that the architecture of the exhibition space offers and thus to create objects that relate to it within the laws of physics, taking into account construction and engineering concepts. The installation Den Sollwert anstrebend, der Standardabweichung nahe und dem Erwartungswert entsprechend, made with a stack of paper tied to a column of the space, emphasizes the material properties, such as the limit up to which they may be required, their nominal values, generating a new perception in the viewer. The work Untitled (conceptual painting) discusses the question of the actual weight of the material and the one generated by the optical feeling of the intensity of black ink. Thus, the work consists of a stack of paper, which painted with watery ink on a gradient from black to white, appears as an object whose base is much heavier than the top. This sensation is caused by the actual weight, by the lightness of the white tones and also by the presence of air in the gaps generated by the irregularity of the paper submitted to the watery brushstrokes. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Issue # 3/13 | 14 Dreams don’t grow old ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Instalação final | Final installation vãos gerados pela irregularidade do papel submetido às pinceladas da aguada. Other two works are shown as conceptual paintings performed on the walls of the space. The installation A Test of Tests is only done with colored pigments inserted into holes drilled in the walls. The installation Cutting the Detour - whose title gives the name to the show - consists of a rubber sheet cut into two pieces, the positive, attached to the wall, and negative, laying on the floor. Curadoria de Marina Coelho The frame, made from the silhouette of the juxtaposition of a collection of images taken from the media, contrasted with the wall creates a drawing, which is unintelligible, yet familiar. Other drawings can also be seen in works made with graphite on paper and on the wall, which resemble to microscopic organisms, very common in earlier works of the artist. The project LX92 consists of a series of exhibitions of foreign artists at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, and aims to create an international dialogue between São Paulo and Switzerland, expanding the local art scene for the ideas that are being discussed in that country and promoting swiss artists. In exchange, artists who have their shows at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo have a chance to experience a contact with the Brazilian culture while installing their works, which most of the times are developed for the space exclusively. The project title is a reference to the direct flight that connects Zurich to Sao Paulo. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Issue # 3/13 | 16 Dreams don’t grow old ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Credits Fotografia / Photograpy Marina Coelho & Andreas Marti Textos / Texts Marina Coelho & Andreas Marti Design Gráfico / Graphic Design Adela Zverina Apoio / Supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
