Amarantina
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
CACHOEIRA DA USINA (Waterfall)
Rural area of the district of Amarantina.
Three minor waterfalls and three relatively shallow pools, surrounded
by exuberant riparian vegetation in gneissic rocks outcrop. The name
of the falls comes from a hydroelectric power plant installed at the site
until 1962.
CACHOEIRA GOTA DE MINAS (Waterfall)
Cachoeira Gota de Minas consists of a waterfall (10 meters high) and a
pool (1.5 meters depth). By being on private property, an individual fee
is charged in the amount of R$ 40.00 – including lunch, pool, badminton, nature trail and waterfall.

Its main attraction is Museu das Reduções (Museum of Reduções).Visitation is worthwhile for adults and children, who delight themselves in
front of perfect miniature replicas of important national architectural monuments, made from the same material as the original buildings. In the
district, we highlight Matriz de São Gonçalo (Parish of São Gonçalo)
and Casa de Pedra (House of Stone) from the 18th century, besides the
traditional Festa das Cavalhadas (Feast of Cavalhadas), held in September. Distance:25 km from Ouro Preto.

Built in 1852, in masonry.It is a rectangular-base building with symmetrical front facade.It has a central door with semi-ogival arch.The observed
colors are white in masonry and yellow in the ornamentation details.
CAPELA OR “GRUTA” DE NOSSA SENHORA DE LOURDES (Chapel)
Rodovia dos Inconfidentes .Daily.
Religious building built in 1958. The chapel has differentiated typology,
referring to a cave, but it was built in concrete and coated in stone typical
of the region.

Religious building of recent construction (late 20th century), masonry,
eclectic type.It falls within a plateau of irregular configuration on a high
hill.Internally, the decoration of the chapel is quite simple.
CAPELA DE SANTO ONOFRE (Chapel)

Built in 1883, in masonry. The observed colors are white in masonry
and yellow in the details of ornamentation.Internally, the original configuration was replaced by an adornment to popular taste.
MATRIZ DE SÃO GONÇALO DO AMARANTE (Parish)
Rua da Matriz.
It was erected in the 18th century, in mid-1750. Its facade has a beautiful central portal molded in stonework and completion in cornice, with
the same material, including geometric cemented workmanship in typical
yellow painting.

The camp was founded around 1700 and transformed into one of
the first mining settlements of Minas Gerais.We highlight the ruins of
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Church of Our Lady of the
Conception), where today there is a curious cemetery. Its imposing
facade, with stone blocks, draws the attention of tourists. Other popular attractions are Gruta da Lapa (Lapa Cave) and Pico do Frasão
(Frasão Peak), in addition to the rural area, considered one of the
most beautiful landscapes of the city of Ouro Preto. Distance:16 km
from Ouro Preto.
SERRA DE ANTÔNIO PEREIRA (Sierra)
Sierra with occurrence of outcrops of quartzite and ferruginous fields,
being also characterized by intense landscape modification caused in
the past by gold exploration. Competitions of mountain biking and other
extreme sports take place in the spot.

IGREJA DE NOSSA SENHORA DAS MERCÊS (Church)
The first formal citation found on this church dates from 1836, when it
was promoted, by license, to the title of Matriz (Parish), a few years after
the fire of Igreja Matriz N. Sra. da Conceição (Parish Church of Our
Lady of the Conception).

RUÍNA DA IGREJA QUEIMADA (Ruin)

It's hard to identify the existing elements in the ruins until 1830 – time of
its construction – andthose who were part of attempts to rebuild it after
the fire. The missing towers probably never existed. Much of the frontispiece and façade appears to be from the reconstruction, as well as a
triangular pediment. We can see that the original design was a façade
with four balconies, without prominent central oculus, however, two of
these were subsequently closed. The main portal certainly has changed,
since the details of the molding in straight lintel diverge from the style of
the windows.It is still possible to identify, within the ruins, the point of
junction of the nave with the chancel, having the space marked by a
slight narrowing of the design and by a level of semi-shrouded stone..

Districts
The district was the setting of important episodes in the history of Brazil,
such as the Emboabas War and the Minas Conspiracy. In 1731, the city
was chosen to host the Palácio de Verão dos Governadores (Summer
Palace of the Governors), whose most famous occupant wasVisconde
de Barbacena, governor during the Conspiracy. The Parish of Nossa
Senhora de Nazaré is considered the most remarkable example of the
first phase of the Baroque. Its interior is a profusion of indescribable
colors. Also noteworthy was the building that housed Regimento Regular da Cavalaria de Minas, or the Regular Cavalry Regiment of Minas,
in 1775, where Centro de Convenções Dom Bosco, or the Don Bosco
Convention Center currently runs. Cachoeira do Campo cannot go
unnoticed on a trip to Ouro Preto. Distance: 18 km from Ouro Preto.

SERRA DE CAPANEMA (Sierra)
Situated 10 km from the village of Capanema, between the city of Itabirito
and Cachoeira do Campo in Ouro Preto.
Its name has Tupi-Guarani origin and means “land of sparse bush”.There are
several springs and waterfalls nearby, along with the occurrence of quartzite
outcrops and ferruginous fields.
CRUZEIRO DOM BOSCO (Viewpoint)

Natural viewpoint on top of the hill, with remnant of Atlantic Forest vegetation in the surroundings and sight of almost 360 degrees around.
IGREJA MATRIZ DE NOSSA SENHORA DE NAZARÉ (Church)

Considered the jewel in the colonial art of Minas Gerais, it is one of
the most significant examples of the local Baroque from the early 18th
century, without any interference from later centuries. In 1737, works
were carried out in both towers, and in 1755 a painting in the interior
was performed.

CAPELA DE NOSSA SENHORA AUXILIADORA (Chapel)
Built in the 1930s, attached to Colégio das Irmãs, the Chapel of N. Sra.
Auxiliadora, with its multiple warheads, resembles the old cathedrals of
the Middle Ages.
CAPELA DE SANTA RITA (Chapel)
Built in the 18th century, the small chapel served for the celebrations of
Holy Week; in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a place of prayer
for travelers going to and coming from different districts of Minas, who
would stay in the lodgings that once existed in old Tombadouro.
CAPELA DE SANTO ANTÔNIO (Chapel)
Built in the second half of the 19th century, it was found in ruins,
but was recently rebuilt thanks to community action.Old photos were
used in the reconstruction, which allowed to erect the church body as
originally presented.
CAPELA DE SANTO ANTÔNIO DO MADUREIRA (Chapel)
CAPELA DE SÃO FRANCISCO DE PAULA (Chapel)
Built in the 19th century, it exhibits the date 1877 in its frontispiece. It has
an interesting image of São Francisco de Paula (St. Francis of Paula).It
has undergone several restorations in the 20th century, some unfortunately
changing their old original plant.
CAPELA DE SÃO JOSÉ (Chapel)
The chapel is very small, and its existence may go back to the 18th century. It was probably expanded in the beginning of the 20th century, as
it can be deduced from the analysis of its external structure. Its bell dates
back to 1911.
CAPELA DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO DA CRUZ DOS MONGES (Chapel)
The real reason for its construction is unknown via historical or textual
sources. Despite its great cultural and anthropological interest, the chapel
was recently threatened to be demolished.
IGREJA DE NOSSA SENHORA DAS DORES (Church)
It is a tradition that the church was erected in 1765 by the simple people
of the camp, who devoted special fervor to the cult of the Passion and Holy
Week.Legend has it that a poor old woman named Maria Dolorosa raised
alms to the works of the church.

devotees worshiping a large cross that existed in front are very ancient.

Districts
It is one of the oldest districts, serving as a crossing point to the pioneers.
It was one of the venues of the Emboadas War. The dense hydrographic net, together with the mountain scenery, creates a rich landscape
of waterfalls, meadows and views of staggering beauty. The Parish of
Santo Antônio das Garças Brancas imposes itself on the landscape of the
small district. Beautiful images are being researched and restored, revealing its historical significance. The manufacturing of candy is traditional.

The location hosted the exploration of gold by gold miners who founded

Rio das Velhas Waterfall is set in vegetation typical of the transition between the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, with a beautiful sandy beach.

This is a small chapel located in the alignment of Rua das Flores, amid
residential buildings. Its small dimensions make up balanced set, which
is enhanced by the symmetrical design of the facade.

The frontispiece of the chapel consists of door surmounted by the typical shield of Ordem dos Mercedários, bringing the Cross of Malta to
the center and central oculus to the pediment. The facades are simple
and not ornate.

was replaced by agriculture, and currently the economy has been strengthened from tourism.Each time, more tourists visit the region to learn about
its historical importance, its waterfalls, its typical food and the simplicity
of villagers. We highlight the chapel of Santana and sierra of Trovão.

CACHOEIRA DO FALCÃO (Waterfall)
Also known as Cachoeira dos Três Moinhos, it is composed of two falls,
with the highest about 10 meters high and 2.4 meters wide, forming
showers and a natural pool, dammed by sand bank.

Districts
Waterfall about 40 meters high, with a passage in rapids. There is a
small beach before the fall.
Engenheiro Correia
The district has developed with the arrival of train at the end of the Empire, and suffered a major impact after its deactivation.The station, which is
a source of pride for residents, is now abandoned.The major attractions
of the town of Engenheiro Correia are in the natural landscape. The tranquility and beauty of rural areas are increasingly attracting visitors. The
religious festivals are also noteworthy. Distance: 35km from Ouro Preto

The building is in structural masonry, with two floors and a roof, covering
over 8 meters total height. The chapel has a differentiated typology:the
facade is symmetrical, with the presence of wooden central portal, with
two padded leaves.

The typology of the Chapel of São José is from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, with subtle neoclassical connections. The plant of the chapel is
traditional and simple; it contains only a nave with the main altar and the
sacristy attached on the left side..

Also known as Antigo Quilombo, the occupation of the district began
around 1704. Lavras Novas is surrounded by splendid mountain scenery
and numerous waterfalls. Its streets and alleys still preserve the quiet air
of the 18th century, and its population is welcoming, which makes it a
quite friendly district.It was discovered by young tourists a few years ago,
seeking the place in search of the climate, isolation and adventures. The
site has excellent infrastructure in relation to hosting and eco tourism.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
BACIA DO CUSTÓDIO (Basin)
 Rural area of Lavras Novas. Access by Parque do Itacolomi.
The Custodio Basin is a dam formed by the Córrego dos Prazeres, a
stream about 3km long and 20 meters deep. It has great natural beauty
and preserved areas around it. The trail leading to the basin passes by
Mirante do Custódio (viewpoint) and is 8 km long.
CACHOEIRA DO POCINHO (Waterfall)
To access on foot, you need to walk for approximately 15 minutes.The
route is easily accessible by trails, with beautiful scenery.
CACHOEIRA DOS NAMORADOS (Waterfall)
5,5 km from the district center
Formed by a tributary of Córrego dos Prazeres, the first fall is approximately 6 meters in height.It gets its name (Valentine’s Waterfall) because it is
an ideal place for lovers to enjoy a moment as a couple.

The chapel has simple typological characteristics.The front facade
has a single door with two leaves with blind opening, and its crowning features two side pinnacles and a central cross made of brick

The Waterfall of Três Pingos has small volume of water that runs down the
rock for about 12 meters to reach a rung. The fall continues for 1 meter
and falls on a flagged floor, making a shallow pool.

Also known as São Julião, the location was once an important railroad
center and one of the cradles of the Brazilian steel industry. It is next to Ouro
Branco Sierra, which ensures a beautiful landscape. Excellent fisheries are
provided in the large dam at the foot of the imposing mountain.

The chapel was erected in the early 19th century. All the walls of
the building were executed in stone masonry, laid with mud mortar,
painted lime. All roofs were ruined, leaving no pieces of the timber.

The original chapel was erected in the 19th century, in elevated position on
the hill, concomitantly with the formation of the village, being later replaced
by the current in the 20th century.

IGREJA DO SAGRADO CORAÇÃO DE JESUS (Church)

After over 70 years of its construction, Igreja do Sagrado Coração de
Jesus, or the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, still impresses with its
magnificence: staircase, frontispiece, tower, volume and typology.

Apparently, the present church was built under the framework of an
older chapel, built on the same hill.The main altar is housed in curious
apse - nonexistent in the baroque creations, but common to the Romanesque and Gothic.

The effective growth of the district occurred with the construction of the
railway station in the early 20th century, which influenced the beginning
of a tradition:Sociedade Musical de Santa Cecília, or the Musical Society of St. Cecilia. Rodrigo Silva is also currently known as the Imperial Topaz capital, a fact that attracts curious interested in the removal process
of gemstones. Surrounded by hills and isolated in its quietness, the district
reveals waterfalls waters around it. From Alto de Santa Quitéria you can
see the peaks of Itacolomi and Itabirito. Distance:18 km from Ouro Preto.

The attraction consists of several pools filled with clear water, where you

The present church was built in the seventies of the 20th century, in the
spot where the original chapel was erected in the 18th century.The original chapel burned down and was rebuilt in the 19th century. It was
demolished in the 20th century for the construction of the present temple.

Districts
It is the capital of soapstone, the material that was one of the inside
bases for the “creative explosion” of the local Baroque. Youth, adults
and seniors are involved in the manufacture of objects and ornaments,
and also in the production of plastic putty, paint, tires and perfumes from
the tailings of soapstone. Its output serves the national and international
market. Most of the accesses to their villages is by dirt roads.

of a waterfall of about 20 meters and a very shallow pool, in outcrop of
schist talc-chlorite.

It is a dam used to produce electricity, much used by the locals as leisure for
swimming, fishing and other activities.
POÇO DO CACHORRO (Well)
It consists of a well with depth of 2 meters and 6 meters in diameter.The
leafy gallery forest and the presence of a barrier of rocks which functions
as a mini-dam originates the well amidst the native forest of the regiono.

different typology, derived from the popular creativity.Previously, there

of new times and progress. Such intentions are reflected in the dimensions of the nave and chancel, as well as within the volume and other

The town was officially separated from the district of Cachoeira do Campo in the second decade of the 20th century. Its name is justified by the
fact that local farms supply Ouro Preto by producing milk and bananas,
with its economy sustained by agriculture to this day. In Santo Antônio
do Leite was born one of the greatest names of 19th century mining
painting, Honório Esteves, responsible for adorning the main monument
of the district:the Church of Santo Antônio. Tranquility is the key point of
‘Leite’, or Milk, an ideal place for a rest in the middle of the countryside
location, in addition to festivities and religious celebrations.

With approximately 1,200 meters in height, Pedra da Loucura is a fantastic attraction in Santo Antônio do Leite.It has a spectacular trail adjacent to walls built by slaves about 200 years ago.

It is the newest district of Ouro Preto, whose origins date back to 1896.
The beauty of the landscape is astonishing: an extensive and deep valley
leads to the small community. A beautiful river passes over down below,
meeting numerous watercourses, forming several rapids and small falls.
Up there, you can see the great Cachoeira do Rapel, with over 200 meters of fall.At the high end of this waterfall lies the district of Lavras Novas.
It is a site with great tourism potential, ideal for green walks by beautiful

The waterfall is in a valley adjacent to Sierra of Santo Antonio do Salto,
on which Córrego do Baú (Baú Stream) forms a depression of approximately 25 meters. Approximately 2 km from Praça Santo Antônio.
CACHOEIRA DO TEODORO (Waterfall)
This attraction, inserted into Córrego do Engenho (Engenho Stream),
consists of three small rapids and a shallow pool on the floor of gneissic
rocks.
CACHOEIRA DO TONINHO (Waterfall)
This natural attraction lies over metagranites and consists of a beautiful
waterfall about 10 meters high and a pool about 1.3 meters deep.

Matriz de São Bartolomeu (Parish of St. Bartolomeu), Igreja de Nossa
Senhora das Mercês (Church of Our Lady of Mercy) and houses on the
center district attract the interest of tourists. It is cut by Rio das Velhas (river)
and has charming waterfalls, such as Cachoeira de São Bartomoleu (waterfall) and Cachoeira do Macaco Doido (waterfall). We highlight the
patronal festival, held in August, which revives stories of the gold cycle
and the production of homemade sweets, whose way of manufacture
was recorded as intangible heritage of the county.

The facade, in simple triangular pediment and devoid of towers,
has no artistic ornamentation.The frontispiece is characterized by
two simple wedges of stone.By its characteristics, it is dated from
late 18th and early 19th centuries.
