Tunneling located in the town of Ouro Preto where, by oral tradition, the real character known as Chico Rei – brought as a slave from the Congo – worked by exploiting it, to finally buy his letter of manumission and, later, the mine itself, during
the gold cycle in Colonial Brazil. It is open to tourist visits in the first 50 meters.
The mine, which was once called Encardideira, was rediscovered in 1950 and
renamed Mina do Chico Rei. It is excavated by hand and distributed into five
levels. With a gallery of 11,500 meters , it is lit only in the initial tunnel, up to the
so-called crystal ballroom, which is an atrium from which leaves a higher tunnel.

The mine has a total length of 800 meters, but only 119 meters are open to
visitors. It was excavated by hand, without the use of explosives. Typically, a
black man with experience in excavation would be brought from Africa to guide
the work of other black men. The mothers would stay outside separating the gold
from the mud, and they would not enter the mine. It was believed that the entry of
women inside the mine would provoke the wrath of mother earth, which would
cause the collapse of the mine.

One of the oldest mines in town, it started its activities in 1704. It has miles of
tunnels, now restricted in large part, where we can see the enormous effort to
remove the precious metal from the mountain. It probably belonged to Filipe dos
Santos. There you can see veins of ocher (used in paintings) and mica.
