Text 1
Translate the following newspaper text into English.
Our first text isn't about politics, it's about show business, because German newspapers this week don't have
much about US/UK politics or current events. But it's an entertaining text and, in translating it, you will use
some important translation techniques that will be useful for political translations as well.
Tip 1: When translating newspaper texts, you should always refer to several matching articles (MAs) on the same
subject from an English newspaper. Links to newspaper websites can be found on the T1 website. Start with
Google News, click on UK headlines, and then type a key word (eg "Pete Doherty") into the search window.
The MAs will help you with the specific terminology (see the colour highlighting in the German text) and the
journalistic style – in particular, notice how indirect (reported) speech is written in the English texts. And if
you do some careful internet research you will be able to find the actual original quotations in MAs from the
newspapers referred to in the text.
Tip 2: You will also need a good bilingual dictionary, a good grammar book, a collocations dictionary (see the
recommended books on the T1 website) and one of the following learner's dictionaries (older editions are not
permitted): Longman's Dictionary of Contemporary English (4th edition, 2003); Macmillan's English Dictionary
for Advanced Learner's (2002); Oxford Advanced Learner's (7th edition, 2005); Cambridge Advanced Learner's
Dictionary (2003). Warning: bilingual dictionaries are often unreliable as a source of English; if you are not
100% sure of how to use the English word, always check the entry in your monolingual dictionary.
Tip 3: When translating, keep telling yourself: my translation should be as close as possible to the German text in
meaning, and as close as possible to natural-sounding journalese or normal English in style. So be careful with
words like "Chaospaar" or idioms like "den Versuch ... bezahlt", "Spekulation Nahrung geben".
Always write your translation on a computer and bring a complete print-out to class next week together
with the matching English texts you have used to help you.

POTTY Pete Doherty had to dash to hospital with lover Kate Moss after he got one of HER rings
stuck on his finger.
Model Kate, seen above in a sizzling new pose for Agent Provocateur lingerie, giggled as nurses
took two hours to free the band.
Babyshambles frontman Pete pushed the ring on a digit while mucking about with Kate, 32. But he
soon realised it was stuck.
The pair spent nearly an hour trying to get it off before Kate told Pete they would have to seek help.
They were driven to Princess Grace Hospital in West London from Kate’s North London home.
Nurses using clippers eventually removed the ring after smearing 27-year-old Pete’s finger with
lubricant.
A pal said: “Pete found it embarrassing — and Kate found it hilarious.”
The hospital visit sparked rumours Kate was pregnant. But a pal said: “She isn’t.”

MODEL Kate Moss rushed her druggie lover to hospital yesterday - after he got her engagement

rapidly started to swell up. The ring was stuck tight and the poor guy was in complete agony.
"They rushed him to hospital where the only thing they could do was cut the ring off to save his
finger. The band will now have to be patched up by a jeweller."
The pair looked embarrassed and tried to avoid photographers as they left the hospital.
A spokesman for Moss, 32, confirmed the incident, saying that it had left no lasting damage to
Babyshambles frontman Doherty, 27.
