Meßstetten (sm). - On Friday,
28 representatives of local politics and the administration of
cities and communities of the
region came to the Heuberg.
In the beginning, Major General Hermann Wachter welcomed the Mayors of Stetten,
Meßstetten and Geislingen
to a briefing in the Zollernalb
barracks. Major General Hermann Wachter is the Deputy
of the German Air Force Commander Lieutenant General
Walter Jertz who had invited
the special representatives of
the civil population to this meeting. Major General Wachter
spoke of a “unique Air Force
exercise in Europe”.

Fußballturnier am
Sonntag in Stetten
Stetten (sm). - Einer wird gewinnen. Um 15 Uhr findet am
kommenden Sonntag das Internationale Fußballturnier der
Übung ELITE 2006 in der Albkaserne von Stetten statt.
Siegessicher gibt sich der
Hauptgefreite Christopher Davis (22): „Meine Mannschaft
aus der ADMIN-Zelle wird gewinnen!“ Möglicherweise sehen
das die anderen Mannschaften
anders. Aus Deutschland treten
insgesamt zwei Mannschaften
an (FlgHGrp JaboG 32/ Admin),
aus Frankreich ebenfalls zwei
(CROTALE IMPROVED/ CROTALE NG). Weiter sind dabei:
die Schweiz (GBADS), Slovenien (ROLAND) und Polen
(SA-7). Harte Gegner bei dem
Fußballturnier sind sicher die
Mannschaften aus der Tschechischen Republik, den Niederlanden und aus Schweden.

another opinion. Two teams

sehr gute Chance zur Ausbildung und auch um die Kompatibilität mit NATO-Führungssystemen zu testen. Ich grüße

unterstützen.

Schwäbische Alb (sh). - Im
Jahr 1819 besucht der junge
Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm
einen alten Stammsitz seiner
Vorfahren. Dort fasst er den
Entschluss, sich einen Jugendtraum zu erfüllen. Inspiriert hat
ihn die wunderbare Kulisse der
Schwäbischen Alb. Der damals
23jährige preußische Kronprinz
ist begeistert von dem nur aus
Ruinen bestehenden Gemäuer.
Deshalb legt er fest, die Burg
von Hohenzollern wieder aufzubauen. Erst 31 Jahre später,
von 1850 bis 1867, beginnt die
Verwirklichung dieses Traums
nach den Plänen des Architekten Friedrich August Stüler,
der heute in Berlin begraben ist.
Der König wurde in seiner Idee
von den Fürsten von Hohenzol-
lern-Sigmaringen und –Hechingen unterstützt. So entstand
eine romantisch anmutende
Burg im neugotischen Stil. Die
beeindruckende Silhouette des
Gebäudes findet sich auch
auf dem Wappen der ELITEÜbung wieder. Allein der Blick
vom Turm einer der schönsten
deutschen Höhenburgen ist
eine Reise wert. Die Wohnräume der Burg wurden nach 1952
von Prinz Louis Ferdinand von
Preußen mit wertvollen historischen Gegenständen zur Geschichte des Adelsgeschlechts
der Preußen ausgestattet.
Die Führung beginnt in der
Empfangshalle. Dort befindet
sich ein imposantes Wandgemälde. Es zeigt den Stamm-
baum der Adelsfamilie. Er
reicht zurück bis zu Friedrich
von Zollern im Jahre 1061.
Geht man von der kleinen Halle
weiter, erreicht man den reich
verzierten Grafensaal. Dort bewegt man sich auf einem Boden, der reich an Verzierungen
aus schwarzem und weißem
Marmor ist. Schwarz und Weiß
sind die Wappenfarben der Hohenzollernfamilie.
Nach dem Gang durch eine
Bildergalerie erreicht man das
imposante Königinnenzimmer.
Dieses wird wegen der blauen
Stoffbespannung auch „blauer Salon” genannt. Er fesselt
den Besucher und versetzt ihn
in eine längst vergangene Zeit
zurück.
Hohenzollern Castle
Where fairytales become reality
Swabian Alb (sh). – In 1819,
the young Crown Prince Friedrich Willhelm paid a visit to his
ancestral seat. Inspired by the
wonderful scenery of the Swabian Alb, he decided to fulfill the
dream of his youth. The 23-year
old Crown Prince was amazed
of the ruins. Therefore, he ordered the reconstruction of the
Hohenzollern Castle. 31 years
later, between 1850 and 1867,
his dream was realized according to the plans of the architect
Friedrich August Stüler whose
grave is in Berlin. The king was
supported by the princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen
and
–Hechingen. One of the most
imposing romantic mountain
castles was built in neo gothic
style. The impressive silhouette of the building can be found
on the ELITE coat of arms too.
The panoramic view from the

most beautiful castles is worth
a journey. After 1952, Prince

see an amazing painting pertaining to the Prussian family
tree. It dates back to Friedrich
of Zollern in the year 1061. Following the way through the little
hall you will find the splendid
Count’s Hall. There you walk
on a floor whose ornaments are
out of black and white marble.
Black and white are the coat of
arms‘ colors of the Hohenzollern family. The way through a
gallery leads to the impressive
Queen’s room. This is also called ‘blue salon’ due to its blue
covering. This salon captivates
the visitor and transports him
back in former times.

Die „Jammer“ aus den Niederlanden
Meßstetten (sh). - Adjudant
Frans Engelen, Sergeant Majoor Mark Van Corven und Sergeant Majoor Tom Pardoel, die
niederländischen „Störer” der
ELITE-Übung, lächeln zufrieden. „Wir haben gerade wieder
einem Radar erfolgreich ein
falsches Ziel vorgegeben”, sagt
Adjudant Engelen begeistert.
Die drei Kameraden gehören
zur EW-Section (EloKa) der
niederländischen
Luftwaffe,
dem einzigen Jam-Car (mobile Störeinheit) der Niederlande. „Es gibt nur uns drei als
Jammer“, berichtet Engelen,
„zurzeit ist auch keine Vergrößerung der Einheit geplant.“
Mit einem mobilen Container
sind die drei Niederländer auf
der ELITE 2006 unterwegs.
Innerhalb von 20 Minuten ist
der Container des Jam-Cars
auf- oder abgebaut. So ist eine
zügige Verbringung zu einem
anderen Standort gewährleistet. Von hier aus werden dann
Funk- und Radarstörungen
betrieben. „Zurzeit gibt es kein
Radar- oder Funksignal, das
wir nicht stören können”, erklärt
Sergeant Majoor Tom Pardoel.
„Es ist wie ein Schachspiel.
Ein gegenseitiges Wettrüsten.”
Etwa 30 - 35 Wochen im Jahr
sind die drei Kameraden Teilstreitkraft übergreifend unter-
wegs. Bei einer Arbeitszeit von
mindestens 12 Stunden bleibt
nicht viel Raum für Freizeitgestaltung.
„Für das Jammen muss man
geboren sein”, sagt Engelen,
„ansonsten würde man diese
Dauerbelastung nicht aushalten.” Alle drei Kameraden leisten ihren Dienst mit Hingabe
und freuen sich, wenn sie mal
wieder „stören” können.

Meßstetten (sh). - The Dutch
“jammers” Adjudant Frans Engelen, Sergeant Majoor Mark
Van Corven and Sergeant Majoor Tom Pardoel are smiling
contentedly. “We have once
again successfully indicated a
wrong target to a radar”, says
Adjudant Engelen enthusiastically.
The three comrades belong
to the EW section (Electronic
Warfare) of the Dutch Air Force,
the only Jam-Car (mobile jamming unit) of the Netherlands.
“We are the only three jammers”, says Engelen, “and it is
not planned to expand the unit
at present.” In ELITE 2006, the
three Dutch drive around with a
mobile container. This enables
them to deploy rapidly to ano-
ther location. Within 20 minutes
the container of the Jam-Car is
set up and taken apart. From
the new location, radios and
radars are jammed. “At present
we are able to jam every radar
or radio signal”, explains Sergeant Majoor Tom Pardoel. “It
is like a chess game. A mutual
arms race.” The comrades work
in a joint setting approximately
30 – 35 weeks of the year. There is not much time for leisure
activities, because they work
at least 12 hours daily. “You
have to be born for jamming”,
says Engelen, “otherwise you
cannot stand this permanent
stress.” All three comrades
work with commitment and are
happy when they can “jam”
again soon.

Slowenischer ROLAND: Ein voller Erfolg
Heuberg (os). – Im Kommandowagen sitzt konzentriert

Perne. Unter Tarnnetzen steht
am Rande eines kleinen Waldstückchens auf dem Rosskopf
der Flugabwehrgefechtstand
(FGR) des slowenischen Kontingents. Der 23-jährige ist
bereits zum zweiten Mal bei
ELITE. „Ich bin hier für die
Jamming-Reporte zuständig“,
erklärt er. Er sei per Funk mit
dem FGR verbunden. Die Reporte dienten dazu, Zeitpunkt,
Frequenz und Art eines Jamming-Versuchs durch ein Luftfahrzeug festzuhalten. Er trage
sie in vorbereitete Formulare
ein, so dass die Papiere bei der
Auswertung einer Übung verwendet werden können. „Hier
wird insbesondere festgelegt,
ob es einen Kill gab, ob also
das Flugzeug abgeschossen
wurde“, erzählt Poddesetnik
Perne.
Das FGR dient im Waffensystem ROLAND zur Überwachung des Luftraums. Über die
Kampfführungsanlage German
HAWK Operation Center (GEHOC) sind die Flugabwehr-Raketensysteme ROLAND in den
Flugabwehrverbund eingegli-
edert. Einer der slowenischen
ROLAND hat seine Stellung an
der linken Basis der Schießbahn 4 bezogen. Seit zwei Jahren ist Vodnik (Feldwebel) Beno
Vidic Kommandant dieses
Fahrzeugs. „Ich koordiniere
von hier aus das Zusammenspiel der Besatzung im Kampf“,
erläutert der 33-jährige Vodnik.
Ihm zur Seite steht Vodnik David Serina. Er ist bereits zum
vierten Mal bei ELITE und übt
dieses Jahr als Kommandant.
Zuvor sei er zwei Jahre lang als
Richtkanonier und einmal als
Funker bei der Übung gewesen. Richtkanonier ist dieses
Jahr Desetnik (Obergefreiter)
Dalibor Babsek. „Seit drei Jahren bin ich Richtkanonier“, erzählt der 30-jährige stolz. Seitdem habe er an jeder ELITE
teilgenommen. Seine Aufgabe
sei die optische Zielverfolgung eines Luftfahrzeugs. Damit könne zwar nur bei gutem
Wetter gekämpft werden, aber
der Vorteil sei, dass keine
verräterischen Radarstrahlen
ausgesendet würden. Stotnik
(Hauptmann) Marko Gricar ist
der Projektoffizier des slowenischen Kontingents. „Ich bin
zum ersten Mal hier“, erzählt
er. „Aber schon jetzt weiß ich,
dass die Übung ein großer Erfolg ist“. Seine Soldaten hätten
hier die besten Übungsmöglichkeiten, versichert der 40jährige Hauptmann.
Er hoffe, in Zukunft noch öfters
an ELITE teilnehmen zu können, denn normalerweise arbeite er im Stab des 9. Bataljon
Zraine Obrambe (Flugabwehrbataillon). Die slowenische
Flugabwehreinheit ist in der
Stadt Zagorje ob Savi stationiert. Seit fünf Jahren verfügen
die Slowenen nun über das
Flugabwehrsystem ROLAND,
das sie von der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland gekauft haben.

Heuberg (os). – Concentrated
on his work, Poddesetnik (Private E.2) Rok Perne is sitting in
the command vehicle. The air
defense command post of the
Slovenian contingent is situated
under camouflage netting close
to the woods on the Rosskopf.
This is already the second ELITE exercise for the 23-year old.
“I am responsible for the jamming reports.”, he explains. Via
radio he is connected to the air
defense command post. The
reports serve as a means for
recording the time, frequency
and type of jamming by an aircraft. He writes them in special
forms so that the reports can
be used for exercise evaluation
purposes. “Kills, meaning shot
down aircraft, are stated in this
report.”, adds Private E.2 Rok
Perne. The airspace is kept under surveillance by the air defense command post as part of
the ROLAND weapon system.
The ROLAND air defense weapon systems are integrated
through the German HAWK
Operation Center (GEHOC) in
the air defense network.
One of the Slovenian ROLAND
has moved into position on the
left side of range 4. For two
years Vodnik (Sergeant) Beno
Vidic has been the commander
of the vehicle. “From here, I am
coordinating the interoperability of the crew during combat”,
explains the 33-year old ser-
geant. Sergeant David Serina
assists him. He is practicing in
ELITE for the fourth time, this
year as a commander. Before,
he participated twice as a gunner and one time as a radio
communicator. This year Desetnik (Private First Class) Dalibor Babsek is the gunner. “For
three years I have been gunner.”, the 30-year old explains
proudly. In each of the three
years he took part in ELITE.
His task is the visual tracking
of aircraft. This means that an
aircraft can only be engaged in
good weather conditions, but
the advantage is that no revealing radar beams are emitted.
Stotnik (Captain) Marko Gricar
is the project officer of the Slo-
venian contingent. “It is my first
time in ELITE”, he says , “but
I know already that this exercise will be a full success.” His
soldiers have the best training
possibilities, assures the 40year old captain. For the future
he hopes to participate in ELITE more often, because in general he is on duty in the staff
of 9. Bataljon Zraine Obrambe
(air defense battalion).
The Slovenian air defense battalion is stationed in the city of
Zagorje ob Savi. For five years
the Slovenes have had the ROLAND air defense weapon system, which they bought from
Germany.

Finnish parliament backs EU
charter
Finland had decided not to
hold a referendum on the EU‘s
controversial constitution. Instead, parliamentarians voted
in favor of ratifying it in a 104to-24 vote. The vote comes
despite a petition signed by
50,000 treaty opponents. With
the charter‘s passage, Finland
would become the 16th EU
nation to ratify the constitution
which French and Dutch voters
rejected last year. The charter
needs backing from all 25 EU
nations for it to be adopted. Estonia ratified it on Tuesday. Finland says it will host an informal
summit of European leaders in
October during its term as EU
president.
Comet breakup puts on sky
show
A comet is delighting astronomers with a marvellous nighttime display as it makes a near
pass of the Earth. The ball of
ice, rock and dust has broken
up into more than 60 pieces;
two of the larger fragments are
visible through binoculars or
small telescopes. At its closest approach this weekend, the
comet will be some 10 million
km (six million miles) from the
Earth. Continued disintegration means this may be the last
swing around the Sun for Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. Dr Robert Massey, of
the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, said the optimum time to
see the comet was between
01:00 and 02:00 CET, away
from the lights of the city. He
said observers should look
East with binoculars and use a
sky chart to get the best chance
of a sighting.
UAV demonstrator
opens up new
technology
perspectives
for EADS
The EADS Military Air Systems
Business Unit has for the first
time flight tested an innovative
aircraft for the development of
future operational Unmanned
Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). During
the recent 20-minute flight, the
jet-powered air vehicle, which
is known to initiated experts by
its project name ‚Barracuda‘,
followed a pre-programmed
course completely autonomously, merely being kept under observation from a ground
station. This flight marked the
successful completion of the
first test phase, which also
comprised an extensive series
of ground tests. Following presentation at the International
Aerospace Exhibition ILA in
Berlin, the further development
and testing will be continued.
„With the first flight of our
technology demonstrator for
unmanned high performance
military systems we have thrust
the door wide open to one of
the most promising future global markets in our branch,“ said
Dr. Stefan Zoller, the EADS
Executive Committee member
responsible for the company‘s
defence and security business.

Police in Nigeria say between
150 and 200 people died when
an oil pipeline exploded near
the main city of Lagos. Dozens
of charred bodies can be seen
lying around the pipeline. Early
reports suggest that people got
caught in flames after the pipeline ruptured at Ilado, on Lagos‘
outskirts. Poor residents of Nigeria, Africa‘s oil giant, often
tap fuel from pipelines for cooking or for resale on the black
market. In September 2004, a
similar explosion near Lagos
killed 50 people.
After the natural gas crisis between Russia and Ukraine this
winter Turkey turned to diversifying its natural gas import by importing gas from Turkmenistan,
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and
Egypt, online edition of Turkish newspaper Zaman reads.
However, according to some
sources Russia warned Turkey
it will increase the price of natural gas if it starts directly importing Turkmen gas. The issue
was discussed during the visit
of Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State Matthew Bryza to Turkey, as well as during the visit

According to the latest data
115 death cases of people infected with bird flu virus have
been registered in the world,
World Health Organization announced today cited by RIA
Novosti. Since 2003 ten countries have reported of people infected with the virus. The H5N1
strain of the virus, which started from Vietnam, has spread
not only to China, Indonesia,
Iraq, and Cambodia, but also
to Egypt, Turkey and Thailand.
This year the virus was registered
in
Azerbaijan.
The latest bird flu case was registered in Djibouti (Africa).

ist noch eins!“ Wieder surren
die Fotokameras. Gegenüber
der Schießbahn 4 haben sich
mehrere Fotografen versammelt. Sie gehören zur Spottergemeinde (aus dem Englischen
für Beobachter). Mit ihren
großen Objektiven beobachten
sie den blauen Himmel. „Am
besten ist es, wenn die Jets
eine Kurve fliegen, denn dann
kann man die typischen Merkmale eines Fliegers erkennen.“

Schweiz angereist. Vorgestern,
am Spotter-Tag in Lechfeld, haben 500 Fotografen 1500 Bilder geschossen – pro Spotter.

schönere Bild haben. Aus ganz
Europa seien die Flugzeugenthusiasten nach Lechfeld gekommen. Christoph Kugler ist
schon seit 1983 auf der Jagd

Flugzeuges. „In Deutschland
gibt es nur noch zwei Großübungen, die lohnenswert für
tolle Aufnahmen sind: die Luftwaffenübungen „Clean Hunter“
und eben ELITE.“ Die beiden
Flugzeugfans arbeiten nebenbei für ein Schweizer Luftfahrtmagazin, um sich die Fahrten
quer durch Europa leisten zu
können. „Unsere Bilder stellen
wir ins Internet und veröffentlichen sie in Foren“, informiert

again the cameras are clicking.
Across from range 4, several
photographers have come together. They all belong to the
spotter community. With their
large camera lenses, they are
scanning the blue sky. “It is
best, when the jets are turning,
because then you can see the
typical characteristics of an aircraft.”
Especially for this, Martin Mi-
chel and Christoph Kugler
have come here from Switzerland. The day before yesterday,
on the spotter day in Lechfeld,
500 photographers took 1500
pictures – each. “We are an
international community where
there are also rivalries!” Everybody wants to have the better
picture. The aircraft enthusiasts
have come to the Lechfeld from
all over Europe. Christoph Kugler has already been hunting
the perfect picture of an air-
craft since 1983. “In Germany
there are only two large-scale
exercises left that guarantee
great pictures: the Air Force
exercises “Clean Hunter” and
“ELITE”.” The two aircraft fans
work for a Swiss aviation magazine on the side to be able
to afford the journeys through
Europe. “We put our photos on
the Internet and open them to
the public in forums”, informs
Christoph Kugler at the end of
our conversation.

EloKa-Feldwebel: Am Abend
dann zum Gedankenaustausch
Meßstetten (stm). – Die hohen
Antennenträger mit ihren weißen Tonnen an der Spitze sind
bereits von weitem auf der Anhöhe südwestlich der Schießbahn 10 zu sehen. In der abgesperrten Zone des elektronischen Kampfführungsbataillons verrichtet Hauptfeldwebel
Reiner Steffens seinen Dienst.
Als EloKa–Feldwebel ist er für
die Aufklärung der verschiedenen boden- und luftgebundenen Radarsysteme zuständig. Bereits 1995 nahm er das
erste Mal an der ELITE-Übung
teil. „Damals war der Personalumfang deutlich geringer, und
es wurden nur die Radarsignale
aufgefangen. Vor drei Jahren
sind noch der Sprechfunk und
der Richtfunk dazugekommen“,
erzählt der gebürtige Nordfrie-
se. An ELITE beeindruckt den
Berufssoldaten besonders die
Vielfalt der Radarsignale. Als
Teilnehmer von Clean Hunter,
Battle Griffin, Strong Resolve
oder Brilliant Arrow weiß der
Luftwaffensoldat, wovon er
spricht. Seine Aufgabe ließ ihm
auch während des gestrigen
Geburtstages leider keine Zeit,
während des Übungsbetriebes
andere Waffensysteme hautnah zu erkunden. Dafür nutzt er
die Abende in der Kaserne zum
regen Gedankentausch und zu
persönlichen Gesprächen mit
Soldaten der beteiligten Nationen. Ach ja, eine kleine Geburtstagsfeier hat es natürlich
auch gegeben: aber erst am
Abend. Denn Zeit ist kostbar
für den 41-jährigen.

Chronicle of the world’s
oldest air show
Berlin, 25 April 2006 – When
the International Aerospace
Exhibition takes place for the
eighth time from 16 to 21 May
2006 at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, its more than 1,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries and
overall area of 250,000 square
metres will make this the largest
ILA ever in the 97-year history
of this event. Following an absence of 64 years, in June 1992
the ILA returned to its original
venue in Berlin/Brandenburg,
resuming its place among the
world’s major trade fairs in this
industrial sector. Since then it
has been held every two years
on the southern section of Berlin-Schönefeld Airport. For one
week the activities taking place
on the site of the future Single
Airport BBI will be attracting
interest among exhibitors and
trade visitors from all over the
world, as well as delighting
many members of the public,
who will be able to see not only
a spectacular programme of
flying displays by aircraft of all
sizes and categories but also to
obtain wide-ranging information about all aspects of aviation
and space flight.
EW Master Sergeant:
Exchange of views in the
evening
Meßstetten (stm). – From
quite a distance, you can already see the high antenna
supports with the white barrels
on top, standing on a little hill
southwest of range 10. Master Sergeant Reiner Steffen’s
work place is in the restricted
area of the Electronic Warfare Battalion. As an EW Master
Sergeant he is responsible for
the reconnaissance of the different ground and airborne radar
systems. He already participated in ELITE for the first time in
1995. “At that time, the personnel strength was not the same
as today and only the radar signals were intercepted. “Three
years ago, radio communication and radio relay were ad-
ded”, tells us the born North
Frisian. The career soldier is
especially impressed by the
variety of the radar signals in
ELITE. As a former participant
of Clean Hunter, Battle Griffin,
Strong Resolve or Brilliant Arrow the Air Force soldier knows
what he is talking about. Unfortunately, even at his birthday
during the exercise, his job did
not let him take a closer look
at the other weapon systems.
That is why he spends his evenings talking and exchanging
views with soldiers from other
participating nations. Well, of
course there will be a little birthday party too: in the evening.
Because the 41-year old has
no time to waste.

„Wir müssen
unbedingt
dabei sein“
Heuberg (os). – Spanien ist
an ELITE 2006 mit Flugzeugen vertreten. Neun Piloten
teilen sich die Plätze in den
drei F-18 HORNET. Nächstes
Jahr möchte Spanien auch mit
bodengestützten
Systemen
teilnehmen. „Ich prüfe die Möglichkeit für einen Einsatz eines
Flugabwehrsystems“, erzählt
Capitán (Hauptmann) Alfonso
Dominguez. Der 35-jährige
ist deshalb als Beobachter für
drei Tage auf dem Heuberg. Er
gehört dem 7. Flugabwehrregiment in Madrid an und ist dort
Offizier bei der Elektronischen
Kampfführung. „Grundsätzlich
müssen wir unbedingt dabei
sein“, meint Alfonso Dominguez,
denn
internationale
Übungen seien der Schlüssel
zum Erfolg im Einsatz.

SU-22 werden klargemacht.
Die Piloten gehen mit ihren
Warten um das Flugzeug herum – letzte Überprüfung. Dann
klettern die Flieger in das Cockpit. Die Triebwerke werden gestartet. Das leise Summen der
Aggregate steigert sich schnell
zu einem infernalischen Kreischen. Die Piloten geben Vollgas. Die Bremsen halten die
Maschinen auf ihrem Platz.
Das Gras im Abgasstrahl flattert
und wird zusehends welk. Als
der Test zu Ende ist, drosseln
die Piloten die Triebwerke. Die
Flugzeuge rollen zur Startposition. Der Zweisitzer voraus, der
Einsitzer folgt. Die Mechaniker
bleiben zurück. Mit glänzenden
Augen schauen sie den Flugzeugen nach, - machen Fotos.
Ohne Verzögerung bekommen
die Maschinen die Startfreigabe vom Tower, beschleunigen
schwerfällig und heben donnernd ab. Schnell werden sie
kleiner. Die Flugzeugwarte
packen die Fotoapparate ein.
Weil die Flugzeuge in der Luft
sind und die Warte deshalb auf
deren Rückkehr warten müssen, können sie die Zeit zur
Erholung nutzen. Chorąży Sz-

Roman Bedlin zieht die ELITE
- „Echo“ hervor. Gleich finden
sich Kameraden ein, die sich
um ihn scharen. „Nicht alle
können Englisch“, erklärt Roman Bedlin.
Deswegen sei er gerne bereit,
ihnen zu helfen. Die Stimmung
in der polnischen Truppe ist
hervorragend, bestätigt Oberleutnant Peter Kreglicki. Nach
über einer Stunde kehren die
Piloten zurück – für die Warte
ist die Pause vorbei, die Flugzeuge wollen überprüft werden.

system”, tells us Capitán (Captain) Alfonso Dominguez. Therefore the 35-year old has come
to the Heuberg for three days.
He is stationed at the 7th Air
Defense Group in Madrid and
is an officer of the Electronic
Warfare section. “Principally,
we have to be part of it.”, says
Alfonso Dominguez, because
international exercises are the
key to success for a mission.

09:15 hours. Final preparations
for two Suchoi SU-22. The pilots together with their ground
crew are walking around the
aircraft – “last chance” to see
if everything is all right. Then,
the pilots are climbing up to the
cockpit. They are starting the
engines. Their faint humming
rapidly turns into an unbearable screaming. The pilots are
opening the throttles fully. The
brakes are keeping the jets in
their positions. The gras behind
the ramp is hit by the exhaust
blast and is visibly turning yellow. After having completed
their checks, the pilots are
throttling back the engines. The
aircraft are taxiing to the take
off position. The twin seater in
front, the single seater following
in a short distance. The ground
crews are left behind. With
bright eyes they are gazing after the aircraft, - taking pictures.
Without delay, the jets are receiving their take off clearance
from the control tower, they are
slowly accelerating and are lifting off with a loud roaring noise
- getting smaller fast. The men
of the ground crew are putting
away their cameras. Now, that
the aircraft are airborne and the
crew has to wait for their return,
they can use the time to relax.
Chief Warrant Roman Bedlin
pulls out an edition of ELITE
– “Echo”. Right away he is surrounded by comrades. “Not all
of them know English”, explains Roman Bedlin.
Of course he is willing to help
them. The morale of the Polish
troops is excellent, confirms
First Lieutenant Peter Kreglicki.
After more than an hour, the
pilots are coming back – the
break is over for the ground
crew, the aircraft want to be
serviced.

Flugprofilrekorder (FPR)
unterstützt Übung ELITE
Nachdem die Übung ELITE
als EloKa-Hochwertübung bereits internationales Ansehen
erlangt hat, wird auf die exakte
Übungsauswertung mehr und
mehr Wert gelegt. Hier kommt
die Unterstützung von dem in
den europäischen Luftwaffen
gängigen „Flugprofilrekorder”.
Dieses System der Fa. DiehlBGT-Defence (DBD) ist nicht
nur in der deutschen Luftwaffe
seit vielen Jahren im Einsatz.
Es wird in Form einer umgebauten Luft-Luft Rakete an
einem Außenlastträger von
den Luftfahrzeugen mitgeführt.
Dort zeichnet es während des
Fluges sämtliche Flugdaten
auf. Gemeint sind Höhe, Geschwindigkeit oder auch Positon. Gleichzeitig werden diese
Flugdaten in Echtzeit mittels
Data-Link über ein Antennensystem auf dem Heuberg in
die
ELITE-Auswertezentrale
übertragen. Dort wird es mit
Daten von den Flugabwehrstellungen gekoppelt und zeichnet
so ein komplettes Bild über den
Übungsverlauf. Die Übungsleitung kann Angriffe auf ihre Flugabwehr „Live” mitverfolgen. Die
fliegenden Besatzungen können die erflogenen Ergebnisse
nach der Landung an einer
„FPR Bodenstation” in den Geschwadern nachbereiten und
so ihre Ergebnisse auswerten.
Bleibt zu hoffen, dass in naher
Zukunft auch Hubschrauber an
diesem Datenverbund teilnehmen, um sich besser auf ihre
Auslandseinsätze vorbereiten
zu können.

Flight Profile Recorder (FPR)
supports exercise ELITE
Now, that ELITE has already
acquired a standing as highvalue EW exercise, more and
more emphasize is put on the
exact exercise evaluation. This
is supported by the “Flight Profile Recorder” which is common among many European
Air Forces. This system built
by the company Diehl-BGT-Defence (DBD) has been in use
for many years not only with
the German Air Force. It has
the shape of a modified air-toair missile and is carried by the
aircraft on a pylon. During the
flight it records all flight data,
such as altitude, air speed or
position.
Simultaneously, these flight
data are transmitted in real
time by data-link via an antenna system on the Heuberg
to the ELITE evaluation center.
There, it is merged with the
data of the air defense sites.
This leads to a complete picture of the course of the exer-
cise. The exercise control can
follow attacks on its air defense
systems without delay. The aircrews can revise and evaluate
the results of the mission after
the flight in an “FPR ground
station” in the wings.
Hopefully in the near future,
also helicopters will take part
in this data network in order to
improve their preparations for
deployments abroad.

…kraftvoll, flink… Ein ehrfurchtgebietender Held alter
türkischer Legenden... Die 181.
Staffel wurde nach diesem legendären Raubtier benannt. Im
Juni 1947 nahmen die “Fighting
Leopards” ihren Platz in der
Welt der Fliegerasse ein.
Die 181. Staffel begann mit
Hawker Hurricane 2Cs. Danach
ersetzten P-47 Thunderbolts
die Hurricanes. Mit Anbruch
des Jet-Zeitalters wurde die
Staffel 1952 mit F-84G Thunderjets ausgestattet. Mehr als
20 Jahre lang erzielte die 181.
Staffel anerkannte Erfolge mit
der F-84G, einschließlich der
Ehre zur Friedenssicherung
Zyperns im August 1964 beigetragen zu haben. Im November 1972 übernahm die Staffel
das Folgemuster F-100c Super Sabre. Wiederum konnten
sich die Leoparden bei einem
zweiten Einsatz über Zypern
am 20. Juli 1974 auszeichnen.
Am 01. August 1985 wurde
der legendäre F-104 Starfighter zur neuen Klaue der Leo-
parden. Neun Jahre lang flogen die Leoparden Starfighter
vom Typ F-104G, CF-104 und
F-104GAF. Die Staffel wurde
1994 beim Übergang auf die
F-16 vorübergehend aufgelöst und erlangte nach kurzer
Zeit den Einsatzstatus mit der
F-16C/D Fighting Falcon. Die
Staffel wurde am 03. Juli 2000
erneut ausgezeichnet, indem
sie als eine von zwei Staffeln
in der türkischen Luftwaffe mit
dem LANTIRN-System (Infrarotsystem zur Navigation und
Zielerfassung bei Nachttiefflug)
ausgerüstet wurde. Dies trug
entscheidend zur Verbesserung der Nachtangriffsfähigkeit
der Leoparden bei. Die Leoparden wurden zur Teilnahme
an UN-Friedenseinsätzen über
der früheren Republik Jugoslawien nach Ghedi in Italien verlegt. Sie beteiligten sich an der
Operation DECISIVE ENDEAVOR (03. Mai 1996 – 01. Oktober 1996) und DELIBERATE
GUARD (20. September 1997

The Anatolian Leopard...

...vigorous, agile... An awesome hero of ancient Turkish
legends... The 181st Squadron
was named after this legendary predator. This is how the
Fighting Leopards took their
place in the world of aces in
June 1947. The 181st Squadron had its inauguration with
the Hawker Hurricane 2Cs.
Thereafter, P-47 Thunderbolts
replaced the Hurricanes. With
the dawn of the jet era, the
181st was equipped with F84G Thunderjets in 1952.
For over 20 years, the 181st
achieved marked success
with the F-84Gs, including the
honor of ensuring peace in
Cyprus in August 1964. In November 1972 the 181st was
transitioned to F-100c Super
Sabres. The Leopards earned
the distinction of conducting
operations over Cyprus for the
second time on July 20, 1974.
On August 1st, 1985, the legendary F-104 Starfighter,
became the new talon of the
Leopards. During nine years of
flying the Starfighters, the Leopards flew F-104Gs, CF-104s,
and F-104GAFs. The squadron
was temporarily deactivated to
transition into the F-16s in February 1994 and quickly achieved operational status with
the F-16C/D Fighting Falcon.
The 181st was honored again
when, on July 3 rd, 2000, they
were given the distinction of
becoming one of the two squadrons in the Turkish Air Force
equipped with the LANTIRN
(Low Altitude Navigation and
Targeting Infrared for Night)
system. This greatly enhanced
night attack capability of the
Leopards. The Leopards were
deployed to Ghedi/ITALY to
take part in OPERATION DECISIVE ENDEAVOR (May 3rd,
1996 - October 1st, 1996) and
DELIBERATE GUARD (September 20th, 1997 – May 1st,
1998) over the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, participating
in the UN peacekeeping operations.

Lechfeld (stm). – Seit Tagen
wurde für die Veranstaltung auf
großen Plakaten geworben.
„ELITE-Party am Mittwoch Officers-Club Schwabstadl“, stand
da in großen Lettern. Für die
Piloten, Techniker, Mechaniker und das Unterstützungspersonal eine willkommene
Abwechslung vom Übungsalltag. Gemeinsam und mit allen
beteiligten Nationen sollte gefeiert werden. So war das Offizierheim auch schnell gefüllt.
Es wurde gelacht, geflachst
und die Stimmung war bestens.
Auf der Bühne begeisterte
die Band Trubadixs die Zuhörer. Bei fetziger Musik wurde
abgerockt und mitgesungen.
Stücke von AC/DC und Police
brachten den Saal zum Toben.
Eine rundum gelungene Veranstaltung, die erst in den späten
Abendstunden ihr Ende fand.

The officers’ mess was quickly
filled. They laughed, they joked
and the ambience was perfect.
On stage, the band Trubadixs
amazed the audience who rocked and sang to the fantastic
music. Songs from AC/DC and
Police rocked the hall. A perfect party into the late evening
hours.
