BACKGROUND Bielefeld The history of the city of Bielefeld, home of the soccer club Arminia Bielefeld, starts at about 800 A.D. The city's landmark is the Sparrenburg, a fortress, built between 1200 and 1250 A.D. to protect a pass leading through the Teutoburger Wald. This stretch of wooded hills forms the southern border of a region called OstwestfalenLippe. With a population of 330,000 Bielefeld is the largest and most important city of that part of Northrhine Westphalia. In the 19th and 20th centuries Bielefeld prospered, mainly due to its textile and bicycle manufacturing industry. Today, the city is home of a university and several other colleges. The soccer club Arminia Bielefeld was founded in 1905, and made it into the top German soccer league (the Bundesliga) in the 1970s. Red Nose Day (a day when everybody is asked to wear a plastic red nose) was invented in England, where the event was first broadcast on TV in 1988. Celebrities donning a red nose were asking for donations for a charity called Comic Relief, founded by comedians and other TV personalities. The event was very successful, raising millions of British pounds, mainly for children. The concept was imported to Germany by the TV station ProSieben in March 2003. Its catchphrase was 'Tut was Verrücktes und sammelt Geld'. The first event raised millions of Euros, but in the following years the German Red Nose Day could not match those takings. But for 2008 organizers and participants again hope to repeat their initial success and raise millions. Web tip www.knoll-gruppe.de The article features 'Red Nose Day' in Germany and offers several language points which can be practiced in class. OBJECTIVES ● Learning about a charity event ● Practicing relative clauses ● Matching headings and paragraphs STARTER If possible, get hold of a few plastic 'red noses' and wear one yourself when starting the class. Ask students to associate before handing out the other red noses. Is there a 'Red Nose Day' or a similar event in their own country? If not, explain the concept and write the English term on the board. Then ask, Was heißt „red nose“ auf Deutsch? (rote Nase). Sum up the purpose of Red Nose Day: Spenden helfen Kindern. Write this sentence on the board, it can be used later to practice relative clauses (see Extension). TEXT ACQUISITION Next, write the article heading on the board: Eine Woche Charity, die Spaß macht! Ask your students, Welches Wort ist kein deutsches Wort? (Charity). If nobody can think of a German word for charity, list a) gute Werke and b) Wohlfahrtsverband, explaining the two meanings to your class. Now read the text on page 10 sentence by sentence with your students, asking comprehension questions at the end: Wie alt ist der deutsche Red Nose Day? Auf welchem Fernsehsender ist der Eventtag zu sehen? Was ist das Konzept für den Red Nose Day? Wem hilft die Aktion? etc. More advanced classes or groups can work on the page 11 text with a partner, inserting the correct sub headings. To finish, make sure that all parties have inserted their headings correctly. Less advanced students might need your help. EXTENSION Ask your students to take another look at the article heading on the board, then underline die: Eine Woche Charity, die Spaß macht. Write the term Relativwort under die and Relativsatz under the entire clause. Briefly explain that relative clauses are often linked by a definite article (der, die or das). Next, students work in pairs to complete the Grammatik-Check. When they have finished point to the phrase Spenden helfen Kindern on the board and ask your class: Wer kann daraus einen Relativsatz machen? If nobody comes up with the right answer, supply it yourself (Spenden, die Kindern helfen) then practice relative clauses further by using examples from the text, e.g. Die Idee kommt aus England (die Idee, die aus England kommt). Anfang Oktober startet der Verkauf (der Verkauf, der Anfang Oktober startet). ProSieben hat das Konzept nach Deutschland geholt (das Konzept, das von ProSieben nach Deutschland geholt wurde), etc. For homework students complete Worksheet 3. If some of your students have been involved in a charity event, ask them to take notes and briefly talk about their experiences. Otherwise, they could write about how they imagine Red Nose Day on television. Next, read the introduction on page 7 sentence by sentence with your class, explaining all Researching the story of 'Harry Potter _______________________________ and the Half-Blood Prince' _______________________________ _______________________________ BACKGROUND The Harry Potter phenomenon The genesis of the ficticious young wizard has become stuff of legends. Everyone knows how the author, a young British woman called Joanne K. Rowling, scribbled the story in her notebook in an Edinburgh café with her baby beside her in a pram. She finally managed to find a publisher (Bloomsbury in London), who sold the rights to the US for £ 105,000. The first volume, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' became an instant bestseller, followed by five equally successful sequels. Today J.K. Rowling is one of the richest women in Britain. Over 100 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide, and the novels have been translated into 27 languages. Rowling has finished writing the seventh (and last!) novel of the series, which was published in 2007. Five novels have been turned into films, 'Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix' is the latest one.
