Inside, the central hall was lavishly decorated by Antonio Carneo and later by Jacopo Guarana, but irreparably damaged by two fires. 20 Villa Lovaria The family Lovaria arrived in Friuli from Lombardy in the fourteenth century and erected the villa in the seventeenth century. The complex of buildings is a typical example of architecture that combines the traditional house of Friuli with that of the Venetian patrician villas. The courtyard is dominated by a majestic century-old platanus orientalis. 21 Villa Pozzo This two-storey building was built in the mid-seventeenth century near the park of the close Villa Frattina Caiselli. According to the legend, the abbey originated from the small place of peace and prayer built by an Alemannic hermit in the IX century. It owes its name, Monasterium Rosarum, to the wild roses which grew abundant here. Damaged by fires and wars, transformed into a fortress, it was destroyed and burned. Rebuilt thanks to Pope Clement VII (1478-1534) in the XVI century, today the abbey houses amazing Renaissance frescoes by Francesco Torbido, follower of Giorgione, and by Battista dell’Angelo, named “del Moro”. Area archeologica del Castello di Manzano The impressive wall high above the hill of Manzano made of squared, stone blocks with large openings, is what remains of the ancient fortress. From the top of the hill, the castle, originally of circular shape, overlooked the river Natisone and controlled the road leading to Cividale and Gorizia. Its founders, probably of Germanic origin, settled in Friuli towards the XI century. Since the beginning they covered positions of prestige and sat in the Parliament of Friuli. The castle was destroyed by order of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which the Lords of Manzano had opposed to in 1431. Chiesa della SS. Trinità di Risano The charming church of the Holy Trinity was built in the last quarter of the XVI century. It is situated not far from Risano to which it is connected by a street that passes near Villa Agricola and at whose sides there are interesting country houses with inner courtyard. The building overlooks the countryside of Risano, as a genius loci of the fields. Inside, the painter Giacomo Secante (1543-1585) frescoed saints and Doctors of the Church, while in the XIX century, Gaetano Astolfini composed the altarpiece with the Holy Trinity and Our Lady Crowned. Ex Molino Cainero The banks of the river Judrio, that runs in the middle of one of the most beautiful hilly area of the region, were once dotted by many mills. In the part of this territory now in Slovenia, could be counted up to seventeen mills. The Molino Cainero of the XV century can still be visited at Visinale. Originally it ran on a paddle wheel made of wood, but at the end of the XIX century the wooden wheels were replaced with steel ones and the millstones by cylindrical rollers. Newly restored, it mantains its old milling equipment. Ex Molino di Leproso The present mill was built in 1767, set back on the left bank of the river Natisone, downstream of the bridge that connects Leproso to Orsaria. The structure replaced the previous one, on the right bank of the river, which had been destroyed by a terrible flood. This is a hydraulic unit, with a dam built to raise the water, guide it into the channel and make it reach up to the mill. Recent restorations have revealed interesting frescoes with religious subjects and rural scenes of country, towns with squares, churches and bell towers. 1 2 3 4 5 6 In the territory of In the territory of Buttrio Corno di Rosazzo Casa Deganutti Mulloni This imposing stone building on the road to Cividale welcomes you with a Latin inscription: collapsas vires sedes restaurant amoena, “beautiful places restore exhausted forces”. The three stables were built at the beginning of the twentieth century, with the same wooden embellishment present under the eaves of the main body. Annexed to it there are some structures such as wineries, a greenhouse and a small building for the breeding of imperial pheasants. Along the west side of the building spans a vast park full of gorgeous tall trees with a romantic stone fountain. Villa di Toppo Florio The imposing mansion was founded in the first half of the eighteenth century by the Toppo family.
