EGFS / AELFE 2010 IX. Vinay Jean-Paul., Darbelnet Jean, Stylistique comparée du Didactic scaffolding in a blended ICALL system for professional English Bárcena, Elena [email protected] Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid, Spain This paper presents a new professional English course which is currently being developed in the context of the I-AGENT (Intelligent and Adaptive English Tutoring 7 System)2 project and focuses on the design of its didactic scaffolding mechanism, which assists any student who shows evidence of insufficient assimilation of a certain topic, by presenting additional learning material and activities adapted to his/her needs. The professional English course has been structured to enable students to work on and practice different competences (grammatical, lexical, sociolinguistic, etc.) and skills (receptive, productive and interactive) in both the oral and the written modalities. This fine-grained sequential decomposition of what any student needs to assimilate to become proficient in professional English is based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. A blended learning environment is used since it enables conventional face-to-face taught classes to be complemented with an online computerbased study using ICALL (Intelligent CALL), thus enlarging and diversifying language exposure and working time. A crucial aspect of the system being developed is its adaptability to individual study rhythms and styles. Computationally this is a complex goal which is dealt with in I-AGENT in the following way: firstly, the system sends student performance reports to the teacher so that she/he can take it into account for the next classroom session; secondly, when the student obtains a certain number of wrong answers specifically on grammar and vocabulary, the system activates a sophisticated didactic scaffolding mechanism which keeps on providing the student with further materials on the same topic at increasingly simpler levels. An algorithm has been developed to allow the system to select materials from related topics (in an analogical way to how an experienced language teacher acts). Translation of GPS technology and corporate terminology management Candel-Mora, Miguel Ángel [email protected] & [email protected] Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and Universidad de Alicante, Spain Keywords: localization, translation-oriented terminology management, corporate terminology GPS navigation technology has become popular and sales of GPS devices have experienced a tremendous growth in recent years, which has led to complex translation and localization projects in order to make this technology available worldwide. Although most 2 This project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (FFI2008-06030). 8 of the literature on corporate terminology comes from publications related to the so-called translation industry, localization and translation-oriented terminology management studies are increasingly occupying their place in the academic field. Therefore, according to some general principles of Terminology Studies, such as the role of terminology in the quality of translation and the different approaches to terminology management depending on its use and users, the aim of this paper is to highlight the existence of a corporate terminology in the user's interface of GPS devices which depends on the degree of specialization of users and at the same time is unique to each one of the GPS brands analyzed. In order to achieve that objective, first, the users' manuals of the main GPS manufacturers have been analyzed in order to propose a classification of such devices depending on the degree of specialization required from the target user with the purpose of identifying the terminological density and variety of each one of them. Then, this specific terminology is extracted from the documentation of each device and compared with the general functionalities of GPS devices in order to detect whether there is a variation from this general nomenclature and whether there is a brand terminology specific to each manufacturer. Finally, the conclusion that may be drawn from this study is that there is a "corporate terminology" or "brand terminology" which in addition to ensuring proprietary brand consistency, that is, how a company is perceived from the outside, complies with the specifications and usability parameters of the target users. The rhetorical role of negation in discussion sections of research articles: a cross-disciplinary approach Maria Carciu, Oana [email protected] Universidad de Zaragoza, España Keywords: English as lingua franca, medicine, business management, Discussion section, negation The variable ‘academic discipline’ has consistently been reported to be a key feature of lexicogrammatical variation in academic prose (cf. Becher and Trowler 2001, Breivega et al 2002, Hyland 2000; 2008; Stotesbury 2003; Varttala 2003). If we set academic writing against the expanding international context, the rhetorical role of negation could shed further light into academic writers’ levels of ‘critical thinking’ (Tannen, 2002) when transmitting disciplinary knowledge within their specific discourse 9 communities. To contribute to this area of enquiry this paper compares of the use of negative markers in two disciplines, i.e., medicine and business management, in order to enquire into the extent to which the variable ‘discipline’ affects the way writers frame academic arguments in opposition to previous arguments, to express alternative and/or disagreeing points of view for promotional purposes, to create a link to future research by raising more questions or as a disclaimer when writers need to anticipate possible disagreement on the part of the audience. Using a corpus of medical and business research articles, negative markers framing academic arguments will be grouped into clause negation (stronger, but less emphatic) and morphological/lexical negation (weaker, but more emphatic) following Givón (2001). Preliminary results suggest that functional/ rhetorical variation in the use of negation across the two disciplines may be due to the ethos of the discipline and, more specifically, to the ‘problem-solution’ (focus on needs, necessity) orientation in business management vs. empirical studies (lack) in medicine. Hence, based on the preference either for lexical/morphological negation or clause negation, scholars in the two disciplines thus show different authorial positionings. From a broader perspective, although different disciplines share one common language, i.e., English as lingua franca there still seems to be some dialogic space for negotiation that accounts for disciplinary preferences within scholarly publication in ‘International Scientific English’ (Wood, 2001). International communication: certainty and uncertainty term in business e-mails written by non-native English speakers Carrió Pastor, María Luisa & Muñiz Calderon, Rut Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and Universidad Católica de Valencia, Spain Keywords: terms, certainty expressions; business English; non-English speakers; language variation English is used as a lingua franca in a business environment in business letters, faxes, telephone calls and lately in e-mails, chats or online meetings. It is a fact that technology has changed the way business workers communicate. The style is more direct; 11 the discourse is presented in a simple and dense way and an instant answer is frequently expected. All these facts change the way we organise the texts and condition the words we use. In this article we are going to contrast business e-mails written between business workers from a Spanish exporting company and their agents in India, Pakistan and Hong Kong in order to observe if some parts of communication change due to the mother tongue and socio-cultural context influence. Our main objective is to detect language variation in business English used as a second language. Further objectives are to analyse the use of certainty and uncertainty expressions to consider if there is a significant variation in the use of English as a lingua franca in a business environment. We also aim at determining the causes of this variation. In order to extract our results, we analysed 80 e-mails written by non-native English speakers with very different backgrounds, some of them speak English as a foreign language and others speak English as a second language because they are former British colonies. We looked for the certainty and uncertainty expressions in the emails using WordSmith 5.0 and then compared the frequency of these expressions considering the mother tongue of the writer. We compared the occurrences and the part of the speech in which we found them in order to evaluate the intention of the writer. Finally, we observed that certainty and uncertainty expressions are used in a different way depending on the mother tongue of the writer and the assertive expressions are also influenced by the socio-linguistic context. Nurturing language awareness whilst eliciting ESP responsiveness Carvalho, Ana Sofia & Ferro, Maria Joao & Martins, Hélder Fanha & Francisco, Rui Manuel de Jesus Borges [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] & [email protected] Lisbon School of Accounting and Administration, Portugal Keywords: language awareness, global language, ESP In the last few decades, the phenomenon of globalisation, prevalently perceived as an economic occurrence, has instigated noteworthy alterations in the world. Its reverberating effect has indisputably contributed to a shift in perceptions and customs, transforming local into global. Echoing this ‘intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles 12 away and vice versa’ (Giddens, 1990:64), and the need for linguistic parity, English has become the vehicular language between peoples. Asserting the notion that ‘Local languages continue to perform an important set of functions [but] English is seen as the primary means of achieving a global presence’ (Crystal, 2003:24), in under-graduate programmes, business students are expected to demonstrate a proficient know-ledge of the language and, in particular, of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Predictably, becoming highly skilled in ESP means harder work to some students as the level of mastery of the language differs, sometimes greatly, when entering higher education institutions, as our experience at the ISCAL evidences. This paper, which gives continuance to previous work, describes the process of raising awareness to language learning among students originating from African Countries of Portuguese Official Language (PALOP) and East Timor. Most of these, hindered by a poor background in language learning, are far more likely to present greater difficulties in terms of ESP responsiveness. Difficulties are often encountered when required to execute tasks proposed within the context of class work whether be listening, speaking, reading or writing tasks. In the final section of this paper, we submit the conclusions gathered from the study conducted for the purpose, which includes the completion of a questionnaire and the conduction of interviews with the students. The findings of this study motivated the rearrangement of class material, which will expectantly aid PALOP students to have a more effective command of ESP. Analysis of image metaphors in the language of telecommunication Cuadrado Esclapez, Georgina & Duque García, María del Mar [email protected] Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain Keywords: telecommunications, image metaphor, cognitive linguistics This paper presents the analysis of the image metaphors in the language of telecommunication collected in the research project METACITEC, financed by the regional government of Madrid and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, under the framework of the “IV PRICIT programme” of Science and Society. This project consists of a cognitive semantic database of metaphorical terms and a glossary of conceptual metaphors that provide the translation into Spanish, the definition and the contextualization of scientific and technical terms. The theoretical approach adopted by this work is founded on Cognitive Linguistics and the Conceptual Theory of Metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson 1989, Lakoff 1993), and focuses on the mental operations and structures involved in language, meaning and reason. Accordingly, in this approach image metaphors are defined as metaphors resulting from the mapping of an image schema from a source domain onto the image schema from a target domain (Lakoff 1987). Since image metaphors are considered as structure mappings at the conceptual level, special attention will be paid to their interaction with conceptual metaphors. Methodologically, this analysis has been carried out in three phases: firstly, scientific and technical terms have been analysed from different reliable dictionaries, databases and paper sources by selecting those with a clear metaphorical basis; next, they have been searched and analysed in an electronic corpus by means of the “Wordsmith” programme; then data were annotated on various semantic levels: derivatives, compounds and related terms; finally, image metaphors have been classified in the scientific databank according to the type of metaphor they manifest, establishing the image schema involved. The findings of this paper shed light on the hypothesis of the metaphor-based conceptualization of scientific and technical 16 language, and especially of the role of mental imagery in the construction of meaning in this field. A comparison of field and L1 influence on non-native writers Curado Fuentes, Alejandro Universidad de Extremadura, Spain This presentation aims to compare the results from a corpus-based lexical analysis of Spanish faculty writing in Computer Science and NS (Native Speakers’) writing in the same field and same genre, journal articles. This study follows a preliminary approach to the same NNS (non-native speakers’) text with a more generalised scope in mind, that of EGAP (English for General Academic Purposes). In that previous work, overall observations mainly involved possible applications and developments for EAP / ESP material design, especially for the improvement of writing skills. The research served as a first step or basis for further corpus-based contrastive examination. In this presentation, NNS academic writing aimed at publication in Computer Science is compared with NS writing in the same field and genre so that more specific features may be extracted for pedagogical aims. An example of the traits analysed is the NNS gap in the colligating non-purpose and non-indirect phrases following a noun (e.g., ability to, access to, key to, etc). An NS Computer Science writing corpus would clarify whether this feature is likely to happen in the discipline, or is exclusively restricted to NNS. In this particular example (the colligation mentioned), its use seems indeed restricted to L2 writing, as NS Computer Science articles have many more instances of the colligation, although in an intriguingly much smaller proportion than in other disciplines. This type of contrastive study would thus lead to the description of both L2 writing characteristics in the papers and particular linguistic-discursive traits in the field and genre. The discourse community of the tourism industry: a focus on genre conventions for balanced corpus composition Edo Marzá, Nuria [email protected] Universidad de Valencia, Spain Keywords: genre awareness, Professional and Academic Language (PAL), specialised language, corpus, discourse community, tourism industry Every professional or industrial community is characterised by a series of genres used in a recurrent way within this community and, consequently, expected and easily recognised/understood by its members. Genre is the way discourse communities (Swales, 1990) shape or pack the specific knowledge of their domains as well as the way they share experiences, set out common strategies, build up vocabulary (specialised terminology) and develop a distinctive way of thinking and acting. This paper aims to analyse the complex discourse community of the tourism industry by putting forward the features that make it a community at the same time that insights are provided on the importance of genre awareness in the study, correct understanding and accurate use of the language of tourism and consequently in representative corpus compilation. What a corpus shows must illustrate extended and accepted use so this paper suggests what could be considered a balanced generic 19 composition representing the tourism industry, showing thus varied repeated social action in recurring situations which give rise to regularities in form and content (Bazerman 1988, 1997, Devitt 2004, & Miller 1984/1994, 1994). Genre awareness necessarily implies accomplishing the expectations and conventionalised use of language established by discourse communities; as such generic conventions must be reflected in corpora representing this use of knowledge/language. In the specific case of the tourism discourse community, a wide range of genres is used by its members. Many of these commonly used genres can be considered traditional genres whereas many others belong to the much newer category of digital genres or cyber genres. Their consideration, inclusion and analysis when doing a corpus-based research on the tourism discourse community will provide key information about how discourse communities are organised and about their textual dynamics. Business Lexica: a need in the 16th century Fernandez Nogueira, Donna Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain This paper is part of a more extent research that the author has made on learning a language for specific purposes in 16th Century Europe. The aim is to establish that a specific approach to teaching business in European languages is not new but dates from at least mid -16th century with the multilingual vocabularies pioneered by Noel de Berlaimont (?-1531) in 1536. The Berlaimont tradition gathers in Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, English and German and other vernacular European languages, not only the typical lexica of any bilingual dictionary but specific lexica and structures necessary for oral and written commercial exchange. It is significant that these Vocabularies were published in Antwerp as this city became, as Fernand Braudel (1984) states, the center of international economy. Due to the facts that many foreign merchants were resident in the city, that it was the centre of trade for the Spanish Empire of Charles I of Spain and that the merchant fleets coming 21 from America, Africa and Asia disembarked their cargos in the city, Antwerp became one of the richest, cosmopolitan and multilingual places in Europe. Merchants from Spain, Portugal and Italy controlled the economy, and this meant, as well, a need to communicate in their vernacular language for commercial purposes, and thus, the need for specific vocabulary and structures. To reach this conclusion, firstly the importance of the city of Antwerp as a multilingual and cultural centre in 16th Century Europe is analyzed to contextualize the topic, and secondly, the anonymous book of vocabulary Septem linguarum Latinae, Teutonicae, Gallicae, Hispanicae, Italicae, Anglicae, Almanicae dilucidissimus dictionarius mirum quam utilis nec dicam necessarium, omnibus linguarum studiosis (Antwerp, 1535) is studied from the point of view of acquiring business lexica for special purposes. The effectiveness of telematic simulation in languages for specific purposes García-Carbonell, Amparo & Watts, Frances [email protected] & [email protected] Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain Keywords: simulation, telematic, effectiveness, reading, listening, writing, grammar This paper pursues the testing of the hypothesis of the effectiveness of telematic simulation as a method to learn English as a foreign language (EFL) in a global multidisciplinary context. The study presents an experimental design based on the ICONS (International Communication and Negotiation Simulations) model, in which teams from all over the world participate in bilateral and multilateral negotiations in a synchronous and asynchronous format. The first quantitative analysis is a factorial analysis of inter- and intra-group variance (experimental and control) in which the progress in reading, listening, writing and grammar skills is measured. This first analysis compares the results within a group of all the skills at the same time. The second part of the experiment presents a mixed analysis of variance in which all the experimental groups and control groups form two subpopulations, comparing the global measures obtained, in order to determine the real effect of the teaching/learning method used. In addition to these three parametric analyses, the experimental groups were administered a qualitative survey with an aptitude questionnaire. The results obtained allow us to affirm that telematic simulation is a tool of 23 extraordinary potential for the acquisition of a second language in a specific context and is a teaching method that guarantees meaningful learning. Designing a Pan-European online test for Erasmus mobility García Laborda, Jesús [email protected] Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Spain In the first decade of the new millennium, student mobility, especially through the Erasmus program, has increased its popularity across Europe. Additionally, the continuously increasing number of participating countries and institutions represents a high cost for the European countries when the appropriate courses of languages for specific purposes or CLIL courses do not find a match between the course linguistic content and the students’ language proficiency. This cost is rather difficult to justify when specialized students move to institutions where it is difficult to follow the specialized studies that they demand due to lack of skills in the local language (as it happens with minority languages in Europe). Additionally, in not few occasions, the students may have the mistaken idea that they will be able to cope with the host institution’s course offer in such language. However, specialized classes should not be open to students who do not meet the minimum language skills to be operational. As a response, some universities organize classes of general language as well as classes of languages for specific purposes that may be specially tailored for those students. In order to avoid this problem and the high costs associated to placing students in the wrong content courses (regular classes), the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia has just finished a project to design a multilingual online based language testing system to evaluate students before they move abroad. This presentation will address the strengths and weaknesses of the current design and implementation plan. Given the experience obtained through the PAULEX (MEC HUM2007-66479-C02-01/FILO) project with which this project could be associated, the communication concludes that it would be interesting to engage in European partnerships to develop the test system. How communicative and global should a French for Specific Purposes test be? Implications for computer based language testing 24 García Laborda, Jesús [email protected] Universidad de Alcalá de Henares and Universidad Valencia and Universidad de Politécnica Valencia, Spain Current evolutions of language testing have led to integrating computers in FSP assessments both in oral and written communicative tasks. This presentation deals with two main issues: learners’ expectations about the types of questions in FSP computer based assessments and the relation with their own experience. This paper describes the experience of 23 freshmen French students enrolled in the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia who took a computer based version of a FSP test. Their attitudes were observed and annotated. The learners expressed their difficulties in taking a FSP computer delivered test. The paper suggests that the dramatic change between general French and French for Specific Purposes may imply significant differences in the students to the new computer context due to the changes in vocabulary, register and language use as well as computer ergonomics. The paper concludes: firstly, that basic notions of certain specialized forms and vocabulary should be introduced in high school; secondly, that FSP should tend to be more communicative and that FSP teaching should be more reflective and communicative than it may be in colleges at the moment; thirdly, that if computer based tests may be a valuable tool in FSP testing (García Laborda et al, 2010), item choice and prompts should be carefully considered. The analysis hereby presented is contextualized in computer based language testing and is a relevant part of the PAULEX (MEC HUM2007-66479-C0201/FILO) project. Compiling a bilingual, active, specialised dictionary on the environment: initial stages of an ongoing project Gea Valor, Maria Luïsa & Edo Marzá, Nuria & Boix Ferreres, Alejandra [email protected], [email protected] & [email protected] Universidad Jaume I, Castellón and Universidad de Valencia, Spain Key words: environment, active dictionary, corpus, collocations, definitions 25 In the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the environment on an international scale. In our increasingly globalised world, environmental concerns have given rise to the need of communicating and translating the great many events and developments within this field. In this context, the present study reports on the initial stages of an ongoing project aimed at creating a bilingual, active, specialised dictionary on the environment, which will hopefully be of interest to professionals in the field and also to a general audience sensitive to environmental issues in today’s society. Our theoretical framework lies on the following grounds: general and specialised languages, corpus linguistics, genre analysis, terminotics, and specialised lexicography. The method used has been based on Auger and Rosseau’s (1987) study Metodologia de la recerca terminològica and its adaptation by Gómez and Vargas (2002, 2003a, 2003b) to current terminotic tools. The first step was to compile two corpora (in English and in Spanish) of a total of six hundred thousand words consisting of environment-related texts from different genres – namely research articles, newspaper articles, informative texts, online dictionaries and legal texts. Next, the program WordSmith Tools 5.0 was applied to semi-automatically retrieve and list the most frequent terms in the field, as well as the most common collocations and patterns of use by means of two of its applications:World list and Concord. Our analysis focuses on the top-five frequent terms, especially its most typical collocational patterns; moreover, these terms are presented in the form of prospective active dictionary entries, thus providing technical and grammatical information, collocates, and examples of use extracted from the corpus (Posteguillo and Piqué-Angordans, 2005; Edo, 2009). Results seem to indicate the adequacy and representativeness of the corpus given the scope of this preliminary study, even though there is an acknowledged need to enhance it for further research in order to achieve the ambitious goal of making a dictionary. Lost in Mistranslation Guillén Nieto, Maria Victoria [email protected] Universidad de Alicante, Spain Keywords: English as a lingua franca, intercultural unawareness, mistranslation, sales letter, intercultural business communication, lingua-culture 26 As Spanish small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) grow within the global market, they are faced with the challenge of international trade and the need to hire foreign-language experts, namely translators and interpreters, to meet the requirements of market expansion. Unfortunately, translators and interpreters may not always be fully aware of the fussy ways language reflects culture and shapes our thinking. The problem arises when a text needs to say a different thing in the target lingua-culture but fails to do so. Intercultural unawareness may pose serious barriers to those in business and lead inexorably to misperception, miscommunication, misunderstanding, and even to loss of business turnover. Drawing on the main premise that it is the pragmatics of a language that reflect the ongoing culture more openly (Wierzbicka 1992: 375), this paper explores the problem of mistranslation in a specific business genre: the sales letter. The case of a Spanish company’s sales letter will serve to illustrate the unexpected effects mistranslation may have for the company which intends to break into a new market. The methodological approach employed in this discussion is based upon a pragmatic model designed for the analysis of intercultural business communication between Spaniards and Britons within the framework of the COMINTER-SIMULNEG research project (Guillén Nieto 2009: 37-50), and tests the hypothetical correlation between culture-specific orientations and languagespecific behaviour that was put forward for both Spanish and British lingua-cultures. The model may enable translators and interpreters to gain an insight into the problem of mistranslation and provide them with key strategies to sort it out. Developing skills, attitudes and confidence for the global job market entry level Kabalin Borenic, Visnja & Krnajski Hrsak, Vera University of Zagreb, Croatia Keywords: writing skills, business students, L2 motivation, HR management, globalization The aim of the paper is to identify linguistic and cultural features that should be emphasized when teaching business English, more specifically letters of applications, for global job markets. The paper is based on the research carried out at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb, including a total of 200 students, whose level of general English is B1 to B2 according to the Common European Framework of 27 Reference for Languages. In order to obtain a dynamic insight into the problem area the researchers asked the students to write two letters of application, one prior to and the other following the instruction and reinforcement period. The students' "job applications" were subsequently examined by business English teachers on the one hand and hiring professionals working for global corporations on the other. In addition to insufficient language competence (problems ranging from literal translation to grammar issues), the comprehensive analysis has revealed the following salient issues: pervading ignorance of business style and register as used in the global corporate environment, and cultural bias towards extensive, unstructured and vague writing, which is still tolerated in the Croatian discourse as such. Moreover, HR experts suggested that business English teachers should not confine themselves solely to teaching specific linguistic skills, but that they act as coaches and help their students to develop a global outlook, understand their strengths and weaknesses and respond to potential employers' expectations appropriately. Drawing on the data from an L2 motivation research carried out at the same institution, the paper concludes with suggestions for classroom activities which could contribute to students developing a better-informed, positive and self-confident attitude towards the challenging complexities of a job search in the globalizing world. Raising genre awareness and enhancing writing skills in English for Academic and Research Purposes: making use of ICT Kuteeva, Maria [email protected] Universität Stockholm, Sweden Keywords: EAP, ERP, online collaboration, genre analysis, online fora, wiki In post-Bologna Europe and in Scandinavia in particular, many universities offer postgraduate programmes in English and also require Master’s and PhD students to write their dissertations in English (e.g. Airey 2009). The concepts and methodologies developed by genre analysis (e.g. Swales 1990, Swales and Feak 2000, Swales 2004) have proved indispensable in this new context and provided EAP professionals with a solid theoretical background for teaching academic writing to graduate students and researchers. This paper will draw on the experience of teaching EAP and ERP courses to graduate students at a major Swedish university. These courses focus on the rhetorical features of the dissertation and/or the research article and attract participants from different disciplines and specializations. Rather than creating difficulties, such a heterogeneous mix of students offers an opportunity for a meaningful analysis of discourse conventions in the participants’ research fields: ‘being faced with the alien text of “the other” gives new insight into the rhetorical mechanisms of their “own”’(Swales 2004). 31 In the context when course participants come from different departments and faculties and the number of contact hours is limited, online tasks and peer collaboration can become a valuable extension to seminar activities. This paper will show how online fora, wikis, and other tools incorporated in the university e-learning platform have been used to carry out tasks designed to raise students’ genre awareness (e.g. rhetorical structure, citation practices, knowledge claims) and to enhance their writing skills in academic English. Furthermore, examples of student writing and genre analysis across different subject fields will be examined for interdisciplinary variation. Such practice provides course instructors with a useful insight into discourse conventions in the students’ subject fields. A cross-cultural chromatic communication in business Leah, Claudia & Banciu, Viorica [email protected] University of Oradea, Romania Keywords: ESP, business language, cross-cultural communication, (mono)semantic, chromatic, non-chromatic In the past years, characterized by a globalization tendency, the form, structure, status, and conception of language, in general, have been subject to all sorts of interpretation, and quite a number of changes occurred at various levels, adding up to something that might be called a linguistic paradigm shift. Meanwhile, the intercultural communication field has increasingly gained importance with politics and business, its basic aim being to find the appropriate linguistic tools to communicate across cultures effectively. 34 The business language, as well as the scientific and technical terms, belongs to the so-called category: ”English for Specific Purposes” and is considered a colourless type of language, characterized by the presence of some monosemantic terms, typical expressions for each domain, as well as by the absence of idioms or of stylistic devices. This paper intends to show that in spite of these features, in some contexts, especially in those influenced by the globalization process, chromaticity, as a language feature, can characterize a certain part of the language in business communication. The cross-cultural business communication terms, although usually considered monosemantic, may hide shades of meaning, may have a sort of chromaticity, and therefore they are no longer semantically light. Moreover, an analysis of a cross cultural business language would shift our focus from specifically intercultural interactions and impacts of globalization on business communication to some chromatical interpretations of business terminology. Instances of interfusing of slight, but obvious business language chromaticity with the concrete global world will highlight the idea that business language in the globalization context points to a continuous, but usually unnoticed correspondence between words and their essential value, and actually, such a `con/textual’ extravagance carries the meaning. Distribution of linguistic competences according to the discursive needs of a multilingual professional environment Lejot, Eve La Sorbonne & Universität Hamburg, France and Germany When moving a business to a foreign country, at least three languages are generally required: the language used in the country of origin, the language used in the target country, and English, if it is not used in either of these two cases. This situation is similar to the one in Hamburg, Germany, where multinational and world agencies operate in English, German, Spanish, and French on a daily basis. Indeed, these international organizations have become multilingual environments which require higher and higher levels of linguistic competence in order to function properly. However, despite this multilingual environment, language instruction remains largely monolingual. Therefore, as a teacher and a PhD student, the differences between 35 current theoretical research on multilingualism and the reality of professional development must be addressed. In order to better understand how languages are used in these three organizations, a preliminary study was performed using both interviews and questionnaires. The role of each language was separated by discourse types which are: formal speaking including conversations about group projects, opinions voiced during business meetings, and phone conversations; listening comprehension including understanding instructions given by supervisors, as well as during interactions among colleagues; writing skills including emails, reports, and designs; informal communication including conversations at coffee breaks, at lunches, in the halls, in emails, and during phone conversations. Based on the analysis of these questionnaires and interviews, the current state of linguistic practices can be established. Our analysis reveals the importance of code-switching from one language to another during conversations of all types. Consequently, the language methodologies used to train professionals for this linguistic environment should reflect the current codeswitching practices in order to maximize efficiency in the work-place. Nos centraremos en textos relacionados con la competitividad del coletivo empresarial espanol a traves de manuales (GARCIA DELGADO, Jose Luis (dir.), 2009) y articulos especializados (J. C. The ecological consequences of globalization: the use of conceptual metaphor in Al Gore’s political and environmental discourse Martínez de Hurtado Juan, Marta [email protected] Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain Keywords: globalization, environmental values, metaphorical thinking, ideology, conceptual metaphor, scientific and political discourse. This paper focuses on how our cultural and environmental values are framed by our use of language, our metaphorical thinking and the latent ideology that lies behind them. The traditional conflict that industrialized humanity has long been having with nature has resulted in a global crisis that we are struggling to solve today. The purpose of this study is to show how former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore uses conceptual metaphor and personification, for instance, when he maps the source domain of woman/mother onto 38 the target domain of earth/nature, in his modern scientific and political discourse both as a means to communicate knowledge on green issues such as the ecological crisis or the climate change and at the same time as a tool to get his message across, inspiring people in the world to take action and lure political support. I will offer examples of conceptual and visual or pictorial metaphors, metaphorical expressions and image schemas following the framework developed by Lakoff and Turner (1989), Forceville (1996), Lakoff (2002), Charteris-Black (2005) and Goatly (2007) among others. The corpus will include a selection of various articles and speeches given by the politician and environmental activist which have appeared in the different media and I will pay special attention to two of his books, Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit (1992) and Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis (2009). World wide web materials for teaching purposes: English for construction and engineering Martínez Vela, Ana Universidad de Granada, Spain Keywords: ESP, communicative approach, listening and comprehension activities, teaching materials and the World Wide Web The need to use English as an international language for professional communication in Europe and in the world in general, is obvious. Consequently, our university students need to have a high level of performance in English and the best way to enhance their will to continue with their English acquisition process is by giving them active and authentic teaching materials in our classes. Hence, in view of the global nature of the Internet and the possibility of exploiting it profitably for teaching purposes that is construction, architecture and engineering, we could use many companies’ websites that can be relevant for ESP teaching. In our experience, an effective motivator strategy for students is to look for presentations or explanations related to their career. Students are usually interested by what other developed countries offer. 39 Our main intention is to use the pages and videos selected for our article to show how they can be used to practice listening in the classroom considering that spoken language through sound clips, films and videos, has an important presence in the web. 41 A genre-based approach to research writing in economics: the case of Romanian economists using English as a lingua franca Muresan, Laura-Mihaela [email protected] Bucharest University of Economics, Romania The main aim of this presentation is threefold: (a) to identify genre-characteristics of successful research writing in economics - with a special focus on introductions and conclusions in research papers (MICUSP - The Michigan Corpus of Upper-level Student Papers), (b) to explore research papers written by Romanian economists/graduate students, in order to identify differences and needs to be addressed, and (c) to provide suggestions for improving Romanian economists' academic and research writing when using English as a lingua franca. Starting from the genre-based approach to research writing promoted by Swales (2004), Feak and Swales (2009), and corpus-informed analysis (Römer and Wulff, 2009), economics research papers in MICUSP are analysed to identify genre-related features in introductions and conclusions. This becomes the basis for developing a (self-)evaluation checklist (inspired by the "can-do" approach introduced by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the European Language Portfolio), to be applied when analysing introductions and conclusions of research papers written by postgraduate students in English-medium Master programmes at the Bucharest University of Economics. Wherever relevant, the analysis will be extended to include reference to a genre chain (cf. Bhatia, 2004) including academic essays and research articles in the field of economics, taking an integrative approach to ESP-research and education in an interdisciplinary academic context. The study, thus, aims to go beyond discourse analysis. It also builds on insights derived from the experience of introducing a genre-based approach to academic and research writing in Economics Higher Education in Romania, including the context provided by an interdisciplinary Teacher Education and Research Master programme for academics at the Bucharest University of Economics. The outcomes of this small-scale research will form the basis for (self-) assessment instruments and materials that can help improve written communication for academic and research purposes in the Romanian Higher Education context. 42 Bibliographical references Bhatia, V. The metaphorical configuration of economic issues renders them less abstract and therefore more graspable. In this article we undertake a study into the construction of metaphorical meaning in economic discourse. We identify and explain the linguistic and conceptual metaphors used in the Spanish, British and French press to refer to the crisis in the US subprime mortgage market in the summer of 2007. The theoretical background of our study is the cognitive theory of metaphor (Lakoff 1987, 2006; Lakoff & Turner 1989; Lakoff & Johnson 1980, 1999), whose major postulates are the ubiquity of metaphor in thought and language and the view of conceptual metaphor as a cross-domain mapping, i.e. a fixed set of correspondences between a complex and abstract target domain and a more concrete source domain. In line with Richardt (2003: 243), we present the notion of schema as the basis for metaphorical transfer. Schemata represent basically stereotypical aspects of a source domain. Thus, health/illness metaphors are activations of three schemata: the SICKNESS schema – the most central, the HEALTH schema and the MEDICAL TREATMENT schema. 43 We present abundant corpus data, since we believe that a corpus-based analysis provides an empirical complement to cognitive theory. The data were found in El País, El Mundo, Financial Times, Le Monde, and Le Nouvel Observateur. The analysis shows that metaphors are an important means of conceptualizing economic problems. The metaphors draw on the source domains of health, weather and nature and are activated by four conceptual metaphors: THE ECONOMY IS A PATIENT (Charteris-Black 2000a; Richardt 2003), ECONOMIC PROBLEMS ARE WEATHER CONDITIONS, ECONOMIC PROBLEMS ARE NATURAL DISASTERS, and ECONOMIC PROBLEMS ARE FIRES. The range of Spanish, English and French metaphors is largely similar, although they differ in their distribution patterns, the schemata they instantiate and their lexicalization. Ascribing disciplinary values of a professional community: the discourse role of adjectives in engineering textbooks Orna Montesinos, Concha [email protected] Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain Keywords: adjectives, engineering textbooks, value, disciplinary culture The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of adjectives as modifiers of the noun building in a corpus of construction engineering textbooks. Applying the taxonomy for the semantic classification of adjectives proposed by Biber et al. (1999), the adjectives which are used in relation to a building are classified into descriptors (those adjectives which describe or evaluate the characteristics of the building) and classifiers (those adjectives which delimit or restrict a noun’s referent, by placing it in a category in relation to other referents). Findings show that adjectives are mainly used to describe the building characteristics of color, size or chronology, but also other more discipline-related semantic traits, such as the design, performance, or maintenance state of the building. Criteria of use, performance, time or chronology are also used to classify buildings. This paper contends that through the use of adjectives, and particularly with their evaluative and metaphorical use, construction writers contribute, whether consciously or unconsciously, to shape the received-perception of the building. A disciplinary-culture laden discourse thus creates social meaning since through their discourse, authors position themselves towards the building and therefore construct the disciplinary image of the building. The analysis finally shows that adjectives are a text internal feature which cannot be separated from the analysis of such text-external features as the disciplinary culture, values and practices which have influenced the creation of the text. Unsolved issues of domain loss in the Spanish business research context Pérez-Llantada, Carmen [email protected] Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain Sociologist Anthony Giddens sensibly defined ‘globalisation’ as the “intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa” (1999: 64). As one of the fundamental consequences of modernity, globalisation is inevitably affecting academic and research domains. The drive of the so-called ‘knowledge-intensive economies’ has stimulated fruitful modes of connection between different local contexts and developed networks for academic collaboration. Within these networks, English clearly stands as the dominant language that facilitates the communication between individuals and large-scale systems, and between local and global settings of knowledge production. Taking the case of the Spanish business research context, this paper compares the textual research products (i.e. research articles) with the research processes and procedures of this specialised community. In correlating these data (see Bhatia 2004), the paper seeks to raise a number of yet unsolved issues: i) the internationalisation of research activities and the commodifying forces involving knowledge and research outputs – being the number of research papers published by a higher education institution one of the indicators of quality assurance and institutional prestige; ii) issues related to the hybridisation in L2 English discourse and, more specifically, in research article writing (see House 2003, 47 Gerritsen & Nickerson 2004, Mauranen et al 2010) and iii) issues regarding the advantages/ disadvantages of the dominance of English in the Spanish business context (with Spanish gradually undergoing domain loss). Finally, the paper discusses EAP pedagogy in relation to benchmarking of educational policies in Europe and the delimitation of geopolitical spaces in Europe and elsewhere. (in press) A small-scale management system for quality assurance in an EAP course: challenges, outcomes and implications Pérez-Llantada, Carmen [email protected] Universidad de Zaragoza, España Keywords: EAP, learning processes, quality assurance, higher education In the current international context, there has been increasing emphasis on the synergy between higher education and evaluation –and, more specifically, on quality control and management of education. Drawing inspiration from the principles of quality assurance in learning dictated by the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQUA, http://www.enqa.eu/), I describe here the implementation of a 48 small-scale management system for quality assurance in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course at a Masters level. In applying the Deming cycle (Deming 1986), the quality system sought to develop the following learning-related areas of enquiry: (i) a revision of the efficacy in the teaching/learning processes regarding the interconnectedness of conceptual contents imparted in the EAP course, (ii) an analysis of the students’ learning processes and strategies and their correlation with their learning results and (iii) an examination of the teachers’ role(s) throughout the learning process according to the ‘competences’ model for teacher assessment (cf. Zabalza 2003, Villa 2006). Borrowing Muresan et al’s (2007) overall approach to quality, I first set the basic quality principles upon which this small-scale quality system relies and provide some reflections on the importance of developing a quality culture in an EAP course at a university level. Then, I detail the procedures developed for assessing the quality of the teaching/learning processes involved the three target-areas mentioned above. In the light of the positive results yielded by this small-scale management initiative, I finally seek to raise concern on the importance of ongoing revision and of an accurate monitoring of EAP educational practices at both graduate and postgraduate levels –in tune with the European Higher Education bid for excellence and innovation. Cognitive analysis of the English prepositions under and below in the aeronautical discourse Robisco Martín, Maria del Mar [email protected] Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain Keywords: prepositional polysemy, senses, semantic networks, cognitive analysis, aeronautical standard phraseology, aeronautical communications This paper deals with the language employed in air traffic control (ATC) communications, in particular, on the study of under and below found both in aeronautical ground-to-air communications and in the standard phraseology on which the aviation radiotelephony is based. This research draws heavily on the work developed by cognitive linguists such as Brugman (1981, 1988); Lakoff (1987); Taylor (1989); Dirven (1993); Tyler and Evans (2003, 2004); Kreitzer (1997) and Radden & Dirven (2007) who have been engaged in the study of the complexity of prepositional polysemy in general English. They claim the distinct senses of English spatial particles form a highly structured network, since their senses3 link to one another. In spite of the numerous studies where the semantic networks of these prepositions are explored, there is no research applied to their usage within the dialogues between air traffic controllers and flight crew members in the cockpit. The study of the polysemic aspects of these prepositions within these aeronautical dialogues must be considered essential since they may create misunderstandings, not perhaps among native speaker controllers and pilots since several meanings of these prepositions are highly conventionalized, but potentially among the non-native ones. This paper attempts to give response to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) which has encouraged research on the English language used in aeronautical communications for the purpose of designing teaching materials to improve linguistic competence in this field. Its main contribution is to show the multiplicity and fuzziness of meaning in natural language, in contrast with the simplified view suggested by 3 2003:21). The senses of the spatial particles are meanings associated with them due to pragmatic inferencing, context and background knowledge (Tyler and Evans 53 the standard radiotelephony phraseology. It demonstrates that in 74 authentic cockpit voice recordings between pilots and air traffic controllers the prepositions under and below appear with more meanings than in the standard phraseology4 proposed by the ICAO. Developing competencies for intercultural effectiveness in global business communication Ruiz Pardos, Manuela [email protected] Universidad de Zaragoza, España Keywords: intercultural communication, competencies, business English courses Being able to communicate effectively with global partners has become one of the key requirements for professionals working in the business world today and a demanding challenge that university business English courses must be prepared to face nowadays. In order to make students aware of the intercultural dimension of communication, it seems necessary to provide them with an updated theoretical background concerning culturegeneric frameworks and models such as the one recently outlined by Spencer-Oatey and Stadler (2009). But, once a specific set of competencies for effective intercultural interaction has been identified, explained and illustrated with case study examples, what else can be done in the business English classroom in order to help students to develop resources and strategies of practical value when working in an international context? In this paper, I will try to provide a tentative answer to this methodological question not only by focusing on specific areas of study to consider in terms of syllabus design concerning global interaction, but also, by discussing in detail the implementation of a collaborative international project carried out by postgraduate students of business management in the tourism industry. The analysis of this project will hopefully let me draw some preliminary conclusions on both the benefits and difficulties of turning global teamwork into a learning tool to acquire intercultural competencies. Although it can be argued that future business professionals can never be prepared for all situations that they will face when collaborating with another culture, and that learning the “dos and don'ts” of a particular culture is only of limited value, it seems preferable to develop cultural awareness that foster effectiveness 4 This standard phraseology was designed over fifty years ago with the aim of achieving the utmost clarity and brevity in order to minimise failures in aviation communication. It consists of codified and limited dialogues between air traffic controllers and flight crew members. 54 regardless of the target culture. And it is with this elusive objective in mind that specialist communication should, in my view, be currently approached in the ESP classroom. Using the Moodle platform for teaching legal English in the EHEA Sánchez Hernandez, Purificación & Aguado, Pilar [email protected] Universidad de Murcia, Spain The Bologna Declaration attempts to reform the structure of the higher education system in 29 European countries in a convergent way. One of the rationales behind the Bologna Declaration is that getting transversal competences (those which help students succeed in a flexible working environment) should be a priority rather than the simple acquisition of knowledge. One of the abilities students should get is the use of new technologies in education. Moodle, or Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, is a free and open-source e-learning software platform widely used in academic contexts. Within its philosophy, an emphasis on learners as contributors to the educational experience is highlighted. Moodle users do not only implement their knowledge of a particular academic 55 field, but can also comment and contribute to content or work collaboratively. In the particular field of foreign language learning, Moodle becomes a powerful help to provide students with complementary materials and activities to practice the language learnt, and to check their progress in learning. The University of Murcia has started in the course 2009/2010 new degrees adapted to the Bologna parameters. The module "Legal English" is a compulsory 6 ECTS-credits module taught in the first year of the Degree in Law. One of the elements included in this module is the use of the Moodle platform to provide students with exercises and complementary material for their study. In this paper we present the design of a module proposing the use of the Moodle platform to reinforce and complement Legal English learning and teaching. By means of a series of activities and supplementary material provided by the platform, students are able to practice what has been taught in class at their own pace and communicate with the teachers any aspect of the subject that can help them to understand the contents of the module. This experience can be applied to any other professional language, particularly to business English, which overlaps in some aspects with legal English. 60 Metaphor and knowledge specialization: the use of building metaphors in general business and project management discourse Skorczynska, Hanna [email protected] Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain Keywords: metaphor, business discourse, project management, knowledge specialization The metaphor role in the transmission of knowledge has been described as actively participating in scientific theory change and extension (Boyd, 1993), as causing shifts of meaning across different fields of science (e.g. Maasen & Weingart, 2000), and as an instrument in science popularization (e.g. Knudsen, 2003, 2005). However, no study, to my knowledge, has been conducted of the variations in metaphorical uses in relation to knowledge specialization processes taking place at the general and the specialized levels within a particular field of knowledge, for instance in the discourse of business management and project management. Drawing on previous research (Skorczynska, 2009), this study analyzes the use of building metaphors in an approximately 1 million word corpus of business management and in a 300,000 word corpus of project management. Of the 14 building metaphors studied, eight (build, architecture, bridge; elevator, door, gate, fence, infrastructure) registered considerably higher frequencies in the project management corpus; four metaphors (construct, wall, rebuild, roof) were used more frequently in the business management corpus; and, two showed similar frequency values per 1,000 words. Of all the metaphors analyzed, two (elevator, infrastructure) were not found to be metaphorically used in the business management corpus. The data obtained suggest a more widespread use of building metaphors in the project management corpus both in terms of the number of the metaphors identified and their frequencies. This, in turn, provides certain evidence for the view that metaphorical uses may meaningfully vary from the general to the specialized level within one field of knowledge, and at the same reflect cognitive shifts related to knowledge specialization. 61 Developing pronunciation skills at tertiary level: an online pronunciation tutorial for academic purposes Soler Cervera, Antonia & Romero Gallego, Joaquín [email protected] Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, España, and Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain Keywords: pronunciation skills, online tutorial, pronunciation awareness, academic English, phonetics and phonology This paper looks into how IT can contribute to developing pronunciation skills in the context of academic English by promoting reflection on the phonetics and phonology phenomena underlying pronunciation features. We assume that pronunciation skills deserve special attention in Catalan universities given the learner’s profile, which reveals little concern for pronunciation, and the context of the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which demands the development of effective communicative skills. We also assume that university students have developed IT skills, and are habitual users of IT tools and virtual environments, where computer-mediated communication is becoming a common practice. In addition, learners in Catalan universities have some knowledge of phonetics and phonology concepts, based on Spanish or Catalan models, and are capable of engaging in systematic practice in basic English phonetics and phonology for the purpose of pronunciation awareness. Considering these general assumptions, we have devised Quantum LEAP Pronunciation Tutorial, a tool integrated in the “Quantum LEAP: Learning English for Academic Purposes” learning environment. This pronunciation tutorial provides materials and tools for the practice of pronunciation skills by encouraging awareness of pronunciation features, reflection on phonetics and phonology concepts, and collaboration with other learners. In this paper we describe the design of Quantum LEAP Pronunciation Tutorial, its structure and navigation, and the topic areas covered. We also delve into how our views on pronunciation practice and materials design together with the benefits of a virtual environment (interactivity, multimedia, authenticity and variety) can help us design an effective tool for the practice of pronunciation skills at university. 62 The current global financial crisis: a critical analysis of business and economic methapor in written mass media economic discourse Urquía Muñoz, María Antonia [email protected] & [email protected] Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Spain Keywords: business and economic metaphors, folk theories, ideology, global economic recession The main purpose of this paper which draws upon the framework of conceptual metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), and their in depth analysis of a cognitive approach to philosophical, moral and economic issues in their seminal study (1999) Philosophy in the Flesh. The Embodied Mind and its Challenge to Western Thought, is to confirm that the conceptualization and understanding of the current global economic crisis, which has been the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, can be partly revealed through the qualitative analysis of business and economic conceptual metaphors and metaphorical expressions in the studied corpus: The Economist, which is reported to have a high average of circulation. As far as Johnson´s and Lakoff´s (1980) theory is concerned, concepts are understood in terms of others. When mapping domains onto different domains, analogies and logical inferences are produced. Different source domains such as illness and battle are mapped onto target domains such as tariffs, credits and funds which should not be overlooked because they shape economic reality for readers to interpret the magnitude of today´s current financial recession. This paper also analyses from a cognitive stance the main family models and folk theories which have been thoroughly examined by Lakoff and Johnson in their above mentioned publication (1999); such as the common folk theory of evolution which is useful to understand the conceptualization of economic models in the studied corpus.
