NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
th
Presented to members and visitors at Balwyn Park on Monday the 26 of July 2010.
th
The Board of Management of the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated presents for adoption the 90 Annual
Report & Associated Statements of accounts for season 2009-10.
In season 2009-10, Balwyn Cricket Club fielded four senior teams in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket
Association (VSDCA) and six junior teams in the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA).
st
nd
The 1 and 2 XI’s played in the north east group with both sides a mathematical possibility of playing finals
as they entered the final home and away game against Brunswick. Unfortunately a late afternoon storm
rd
th
across Melbourne after both sides were well placed put paid to any finals action. The 3 and 4 XI’s played
th
th
in the North group, with the 4 XI winning a premiership from 4 position and breaking a run of six
th
rd
successive 5 placings. For the fifth successive year the 3 XI again qualified for finals after finishing the
rd
regular season in 3 position. Unfortunately they were unable to progress beyond the semi final suffering a
narrow loss to Preston.
Season 2009-10 saw the arrival of a new coach in Ben Hanley. In what very much set out as a year of
transition after a damaging end to 2008-09 quickly became a year of positives. In Ben, the playing group
found a considerate and considered leader who subsequently gained their trust as the season moved on.
What was particularly pleasing was the positive energy that surrounded the playing group, particularly in light
st
of the fact that neither Ben or the 1 XI had a great start to the season. To his credit Ben turned his year
around prior to Christmas and a return of 374 runs and 16 wickets were excellent returns and pivotal to a
st
number of victories for the 1 XI. In addition a number of players throughout the club had career best years
and definitely benefited from increased opportunities they were deemed deserving of. In particular Ben
st
McLeod, Travis Miles, and a resurgent Patrick Tuohey formed the nucleus of a well performed 1 XI. Others
such as Andrew Walpole, Thomas Jacob, Daniel Kiely and Matthew Jones were regularly well performed
players at higher levels than they had previously played and this reflected well on the leadership of Ben.
Ben Hanley and his Match Day Committee comprising Mark Gordon and the respective grade captains
ensured we were competitive and well prepared throughout the senior sides. The spread of results across
the senior sides saw that Balwyn was to finish eleventh (of 28) in the VSDCA club championship and
represented an improvement of two places from the previous season. To those that were somewhat
disaffected by the events of 2008-09, they are to be commended for fully focusing on accepting the
challenge of ensuring that we as a club recovered a sense of shared purpose on and off the field. In
particular we thank long time Match Committee chairman Mark Gordon who fulfilled a very important role in
facilitating a harmonious outlook when he returned to the role he had vacated the year previously.
The club again fielded six junior sides this season. The organisation of this vital component of the club was
undertaken by Brendan Moore. In his very dry and understated manner he gives this very important part of
the club much needed structure and is immensely popular for the manner in which he meets the challenges
of managing a transient group of players and parents. To those parents that were involved in coaching or
other match day contributions we welcome your contributions, and hope that ultimately it will translate in to
watching your kids and friends become senior players at Balwyn Cricket Club.
The aspect of managing the coaching of junior players is always a vexing one, particularly as it often
requires a degree of flexibility to assist with early afternoons training sessions and the like. To that end we
were fortunate enough to enlist the assistance of Daniel Kiely. As always the assistance of other senior
players would be further welcomed. It was very encouraging to see the work he put in. The feedback we
received, and that he offered at a late season committee meeting reflected very well on his contribution.
Another very important aspect of our junior structure is the In2Cricket (formerly Milo) program. This year we
had over 70 registrations and Elizabeth Orr is again a source of great inspiration for the manner in which she
continues to serve the club in the capacity as the In2Cricket co-ordinator. We are also grateful for the
support Michael De Martinis and John Fitzgerald have offered over a number of seasons. The only slightly
disappointing aspect of the program was the loss of some of participants when it is time to graduate to junior
cricket to rival junior clubs who do not offer such programs.
The RM Hatch Under 15 representative squad was managed by John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr who have
been a perennial presence in the running of this side for a number of years. As a club we have adopted the
approach of selecting local players with a view to having them become potential senior players in years to
come. The results this season were very good even if there was an element of disappointment in not
finishing higher. Unfortunately in a condensed carnival that saw one game called off because of heat, a first
up narrow loss against Bundoora meant that any further mishaps would be terminal which is exactly what
transpired after a second week loss to Kew. As always it is to be hoped the exposure given to those
4

NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
selected over the fortnight in early January should be of benefit in years to come. Already two of the Hatch
squad in its captain Lachlan Fitzpatrick, and its wicket keeper Shaun Macdonald, represented the club at
st
senior level during the season. John Farmer’s continued involvement as 1 XI team manager/scorer, net
captain and RM Hatch coach saw him richly deserve the Gladstone Small Best Clubman award in 2009-10.
The clubs financial outcome for 2009-10 was covered off in some depth by our Honorary Treasurer Damian
Boland in his very insightful report. We are indebted not only to his financial acumen, but also his hard work
in ensuring all challenges related to our financial well being are covered off. Financially however challenges
continue to remain and we as a board are committed in ensuring that we are well placed to meet them.
Damian had a particularly difficult year with his wife Lucy having a significant health scare to accompany the
challenges of becoming first time parents. That he devotes so much time to not only the financial aspects but
also the more mundane and little noticed things, is a tribute to the respect he has for his cricket club and
those that comprise it. With Damian at the helm we are confident that the interests of the club and its
financial well being are being addressed in a very professional and forthright manner.
Our relationship with the VSDCA this season was administered in a highly effective and largely positive
manner. All matters were dealt with promptly and deadlines adhered to in a professional manner. In
particular we offer our thanks to the Secretary Ken Hilton and his assistant Peter Flack. Ken in particular is
very quick to address any correspondence or queries we may have even if we do not always gain the
rd
outcome we are seeking. In one instance we were fairly disappointed at the findings surrounding a 3 XI “no
game” late in the year when Bundoora had made little effort to prepare a wicket across both days. Being
asked to explain the events of the day despite breaching no rule was a little odd, particularly as our
approach attempted to redress the potential unfairness of not being able to qualify players for finals when
every other game played over the course of the round. It would appear the spirit of cricket and the aspect of
fairness is at times a matter of interpretation but we are committed to working with the VSDCA to make the
competition a strong and vibrant one.
We are particularly pleased that our President James Sheehan has just completed his first season on the
VSDCA Executive. This is not only a fine reflection of James’ abilities, but also is an acknowledgement of
the manner in which we have been administered over recent times. With respect to the VSDCA, we are very
well represented by our Club Delegates which was also of immeasurable assistance.
On the playing front a number of changes were apparent at VSDCA level. The introduction of coloured
clothing and white balls to complement the existing one day rules was adopted through all grades. Despite
burdening clubs with increased costs we were fortunate that this was largely offset for 2009-10 by a very
generous sponsorship from Rod Maher (brother in law of Clint Kennon). We are also indebted to the
VSDCA’s major sponsor Kookaburra for their support by way of stumps, match balls and promotional
material. Season 2009-10 saw the launch of the Primary Edge 20/20 competition. The format saw the clubs
st
1 XI play three Tuesday evening games of which we won two of them. Whilst it was an opportunity to
showcase our club and the competition on times and in a format not previously tried, it is to be hoped that
such an approach is a measured one and that the more traditional fixturing is not in time sacrificed. We once
again hosted two games of annual country week competition and we trust that the players representing
Warragul, Hamilton, Benalla and Mornington Peninsula enjoyed our facilities.
Of matters closer to home we again thank the City of Boroondara for their support in facilitating our ability to
play cricket throughout both our senior and junior grades. In particular we are thankful for the undertaking of
capital works and ground and pavilion improvements which have been happening over the past 12 months.
Already we have seen the benefits of the improved ground lighting at Balwyn Park. Significantly there have
been major pavilion works at Gordon Barnard Reserve with a new pavilion near completion on the Eastern
side of the ground. It is now a significantly improved and impressive venue at which to play cricket. In lieu of
the stage 2 development of the upstairs social rooms at Balwyn Park, we were again fortunate enough to
avail ourselves of the bowling club rooms for social and post match functions. In addition the ground now
has an electronic scoreboard and we thank the Bendigo Bank for the contribution they made towards this.
The maintenance and standards of the turf wickets by which our facility is often judged was overall well
regarded. For the first time we created a council liaison officer on our committee and we thank Nick
Courtney for his work in largely managing this relationship. The City of Boroondara in conjunction with Yarra
Valley water recognise the role sport plays in the community and as such we have been the beneficiaries of
the warm season grass program which added immeasurably to both grounds we utilise. Furthermore
additional requests around a flexible fixture or training requirement regarding the facilities were nearly
always promptly dealt with and we thank both Clare Graham and Kirsty Reidy for that. We were also pleased
at the acknowledgement the VSDCA gave our club with respect the state of our facilities and the way in
which we interact with our local council. This is certainly a high priority for Cricket Victoria as it seeks to
reinforce cricket as the pre-eminent summer sport across the state.
5
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
Other Government initiatives saw the club become fully compliant with the Working with Children legislation.
The additional impost of the compliance should be seen in the light of the positive outcomes parents should
get in the knowledge that those in leadership positions across both the senior and junior sections of the club
are fully accredited and understanding of their obligations. As a club we are far less supportive of the liquor
licencing regime that saw our fee increase nearly four fold. We fail to see how a local sporting club with an
excellent compliance history is considered a ‘risk’ in light of other decisions within the same portfolio and find
the Victorian Governments one size fits all approach a lazy response to issues surrounding alcohol intake.
We continue to apply for Government grants programs and for the third season in a row we find success in
this endeavour difficult to achieve. It would appear that there is either perception with respect the suburb we
represent, or that the electoral boundaries are not sufficiently attractive when considering such distributions.
Thankfully Bill Lang on behalf of the junior section of the club was able to successfully apply to one of the
programs offered by one of the major banks and we now have some much needed sun shades for the
players and spectators at the junior grounds.
At Balwyn Cricket Club we recognise that we have community obligations beyond our sport and to that end
we have adopted the ‘Good Sports’ program. This is a national program that promotes a cultural change in
sporting clubs away from the negative effects of alcohol use and towards a community and family focus with
an emphasis on respecting the safe licensed venue we have. We hope that this initiative coupled with the
practical application of the fundamentals within the program, will encourage all parents to continue to view
the Balwyn Cricket Club as the club of choice for their children and their friends. This season we were
pleased to achieve stage 2 of our accreditation and trust that this is a reflection of the responsible manner in
which both the club and its members conduct themselves.
The contribution of Jake and Benn Gordon in managing our sponsors and co-ordinating club functions is
also greatly appreciated. Both of these roles go quiet some way to ensuring our financial well being. It was
no coincidence that the work of Jake Gordon in particular, was such that the Trivia Night was one of our
most successful in terms of both attendance and money raised. The Presentation Night was again a large
logistical undertaking and this year it was held at Hotel Kew. The Hotel Kew ‘board room’ proved to be a fine
venue for our monthly committee meetings and we thank Nick and all of our club members who support the
sponsorship. Another highlight from a fund raising point of view was again the $1000 draw. We also thank all
our Sponsors and in particular the contributions of the Bendigo Bank and the Hotel Kew. Another important
aspect that contributed to good camaraderie around the club was the purchase of a table tennis table and
we again thank Jake for his initiative in setting this in motion. Now to get the flair and aggression from the
table tennis table to the centre wicket each weekend!
This season saw us continue to maintain contact with former players and it was particularly pleasing that one
of our long serving former players and life member in Bud Walder was on hand to present the medal named
in his honour to Ben McLeod at the entertaining vote count day. We also thank our many past players who
contributed to the club through taking up Golden Tiger coterie memberships. It is to be hoped that in years to
come that this newly created initiative will be the bridge that keeps our past players actively engaged in the
well being of our club. As a club we are always delighted when past players are on hand even if the
interaction is sometimes infrequent.
We look forward to the 2010-11 season in the VSDCA with much optimism.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2009/10 was a year of transition for the club and as I write this report at the end of the year I feel extremely
positive about our culture and the on-field future.
We welcomed Ben Hanley as Captain/Coach after 4 years with Brendan Joyce at the helm. Ben is a young,
enthusiastic coach and a talented cricketer. Having never coached a club or played in the subbies he had
much to learn. He blossomed after Christmas on and off the field as a coach, captain and player. In the end
the 1st XI finished just out of the finals and the outlook is positive for them in the coming seasons.
I would like to thank the captains of the other three XI’s – Geoff, Bill, Willo and Dom. They do a power of
work during the week planning, selecting sides and running training. Their efforts are much appreciated.
The 3rd and 4th XI’s competed in finals. The seasoned finals campaigners in the 3rd XI were unlucky in a
tight semi final but represented themselves extremely well. Ironically the 4th XI played finals for the first time
in many years after consistently missing a finals berth by small margins. They had a great win in the Grand
Final against Bundoora off the last over. All the players and supporters will remember that game very
fondly. Congratulations to Dom and all the players, premierships do not come easy, it is a great
achievement. Recognition must also go to Willo who lead that team for 10 years and the first half of this year
when he stepped down as captain in a move to Sydney with work. Willo has also stepped down as Vice
President and committee member which is indeed a loss for the club. The club is indebted to him for over
ten years of service as a committee member, player and clubman.
It is also with sadness that we farewell my brother Andrew from committee due to family commitments. A
member of committee for 5 years in two stints with various roles, his contribution was always highly valued
and will be missed.
Without our sponsors the club would simply not function. Their financial support ensures we continue to
provide outstanding facilities to the playing group each week and I look forward to their continued
involvement in the BCC for years to come. Especially our two major sponsors, the Bendigo Community
Bank and the Hotel Kew.
The City of Boroondara is also a major sponsor of our on and off field activities. Clare, Kirsty, Glen, John our
curator and all the staff at the council do a terrific job continually providing us with terrific training and playing
facilities. We look forward to working with them to provide quality services to the local community.
I gained a unique insight into the running of the competition as a new member of the VSDCA executive
under President Jack Sheehan in his first year. There is a power of work done by the executive in
management of the competition, umpires and clubs. I thank them for their hard work.
All the members of the committee work hard to ensure the players get on the park for training and playing
with the best possible facilities. From social functions and fundraising to liaising with council about facilities
and managing the playing list there is an enormous amount of unseen work done to make Balwyn the great
place it is.
This year, as in previous years I find myself in great appreciation of Damian Boland and Brett Oliver as
Honorary Treasurer and Secretary respectively. I am always shocked at the amount of work done by these
two gentlemen in service of the club (sometimes thankless). All players owe Bols and Bomber a debt of
gratitude.
Again this year the junior club was lead by Brendan Moore with the Hatch side managed by the brilliant duo
of John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr. The future of the club is in good hands with these three life members
coaching, teaching and administering the junior sections. Elizabeth also manages the In2Cricket Have-A-Go
program which accommodates close to 65 kids on a Saturday morning. I went down to watch their
presentation morning and to see all these kids and parents in multiple games is a great sight.
I spoke on presentation night about my admiration for the culture of Balwyn and the ability to recover after a
challenging year. It would have been easy for people to withdraw from the club and, whilst some did, the
majority should be proud of the efforts they put in to ensure Balwyn continues to be a great place to be
around. I am excited about the coming season and look forward to more on-field success.

NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
TREASURER’S REPORT
The Balwyn Cricket Club recorded an Operating Surplus of $11,686 in season 2009/10, one of the more
successful results in the Club’s recent history and a $14,041 improvement on the prior year result. The
Committee of Management views the result in a very positive manner, particularly in light of the fact that the
performance mirrored a general improvement in the feeling and social aura around the Club in season
2009/10.
Club revenues increased by $13,742 (20%) on the prior year, mainly due to the $7,471 (71%) increase in the
Sponsorship and Donations received during season, assisted by a very generous contribution from the
Bendigo Bank towards the new scoreboard at Balwyn Park. Income from Managed Investments also
provided substantial upside, rising $6,390 (164%) on the back of the improved performance in the local
equities market over the past year. These incremental revenue streams were offset by the slight decline in
Social & Fundraising income, following an informed decision by the Committee to scale back the calendar of
social events this season. Having noted this fact, the events held this year proved to be very successful
indeed, highlighted by the Trivia Night with was one of the best attended in recent years, doubling the
revenues generated from the event in 2008/09.
The total expense base of the Club remained fairly flat in comparison to the prior year, with the reduction in
Coaching, Training & Professional Player costs (53%) being offset by a significant increase in Inventory &
Consumables $3,934 (35%) following the roll out of the full coloured clothing across all grades in season
2009/10 and the 63% ($6,314) increase in Ground Rental and Turf Wicket Preparation costs charged by the
Council this season. Other Social & Fundraising Expenses fell by $4,877 (39%) due to the reduced
incidence of events referenced above, namely the removal of the Family Day which proved to be a
significant loss making venture for the Club in the prior season. This reduction in Social costs was also
replicated by a 40% decrease in Presentation Night outlays as the Club moved away from the ‘gala’ theme
in 2009/10.
Special mention must go to Honorary Secretary, Brett Oliver who will be stepping down from the role in
season 2010/11. Brett has made a significant difference in the most labour intensive of position on the
Committee and has proven to be the bellwether of the VSDCA competition during his tenure. His
contributions over the past 5 years have included diligent and proactive communications to internal and
external stakeholders, defining an efficient on-line scorecard and registrations data input process to
MyCricket, managing the detailed risk management agenda with the Council, thought provoking rule
proposals/changes, the evolution of the BCC Annual Report (complete with historical facts!), and reducing
controllable fine incidence to nil! Well done Bomber on all you have done for the Club in the position, it has
been a pleasure working alongside you and your efforts have been greatly appreciated.
In closing I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to Jake Gordon for his continued diligent efforts and
innovations in managing our Social and Fundraising agenda this season. Thanks once again to President
James Sheehan for his terrific leadership & advice and to the Committee for their support and guidance with
matters financial and administration respectively throughout the past year.. Thanks also to all of the
sponsors of the Balwyn Cricket Club for their on-going and very generous support of our organisation
throughout the year. Finally, we put the challenge out to all members, supporters and Board members to
take responsibility for boosting their own individual support of the Club at the end of last season. This call
was answered in an extremely positive manner in season 2009/10, with excellent attendance at social
functions, after training and post match gatherings, support of fundraising events and helping to make a
difference at our Club. For this I am sincerely grateful. Let’s all continue to build on what we have achieved
in season 2009/10 and take the Club another step forward in 2010/11.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONS
st
From 1949-50 the best-performed player in the 1 XI was awarded the club champion trophy (Lindsay
Traeger Trophy). In 1978 the club champion was re named the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy in honour of Jack
who had died the previous year.
The BA Provan Trophy was created in 1985 with players in all teams being eligible for the award. The
st
winner of the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy was thereafter referred to as the 1 XI champion but was not eligible
to win both awards.
Both awards are decided on a points formula for runs, assisted wickets, unassisted wickets, catches,
stumpings, run outs direct and run outs assisted. The BA Provan Trophy includes points awarded for home
and away fixtures only.
Winner of the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy for 2009/10 – Ben McLeod.
Winner of the BA Provan Trophy for 2009/10 – Dominic Moloney.

THE BUD WALDER MEDAL
A brilliant leg spin bowler and very capable middle order batsman, Bud has been a five time club champion,
coached the club and represented the VSDCA side on many occasions. He was awarded life membership in
1979 and is still a staunch supporter and a very popular member of the Balwyn Cricket Club. The Bud
Walder Medal is awarded on a 3-2-1 basis across all grades.
A super consistent year from Ben McLeod saw him comfortably win the Bud Walder Medal. Dom Moloney
finished strongly with early leader Patrick Tuohey a couple of votes further back in third place.

NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
COACH’S REPORT
Firstly I have to thank the cricket clubs committee and hierarchy for the opportunity to take on the
captain/coach role for this season.
Without the support and guidance I have received over the season this position would have been a lot more
difficult and confronting than I found it.
In no particular order I would like to thank the following people for their support over the season.
James Sheehan, you have been a fantastic support over the season, always very easy to get in touch with
and a well organised and enthusiastic person who Balwyn are very lucky to have as their president.
Mark Gordon, it was great to have you on board and work with you this season as chairman of selectors and
net captain. Your love of the club is unquestioned and your knowledge of the clubs players ability and
availability for matches made mine and the other captains job much easier.
John Farmer, you are one of crickets great people and the work you do around the club is unquestioned
both in the lead up to games and on match play. Your support and help around the club helps make the club
the great place it is.
Brett Oliver, your position as secretary is very much as thankless job but your knowledge of cricket and what
tasks that need to be performed makes the committee’s and my job a lot easier so thank you.
Damian Boland, also the position of treasurer is another fairly thankless taskless task and your support in
allowing me to purchase extra equipment for training and maintaining the clubs excellent financial position.
All the other team captains, Geoff Kiker (2nds), Bill Leropoulos (3rds) with the help of Brett Oliver & Dom
Moloney & Matt Wilson in the (4ths). All your support and knowledge not only on selection nights, but also at
training and on game days is very much appreciated and I am very happy having you guys leading the rest
of the club and teaching the guys how to play cricket in the correct way and improving individuals skills.
After a difficult season the year before I must commend all the players for sticking with the club and getting
behind myself and all of your team mates to help get the club back on track and where it deserves to be. As
a whole I think we had a very competitive and productive season which culminated in a 4th XI premiership,
3rd XI Semi final loss by 2 runs and the 2nds & 1sts both finishing mid table but within one victory of making
the top 4. A Club Championship finish of 11 out of 28 is a good result which as a club I hope to push towards
the top 5 next season.
The season presented many opportunities for players to play higher levels of cricket than they have played
previously or given them the opportunity to play a greater role within the side. I was very happy with many
individuals development and I look forward to witnessing this improvement in the season to come.
Obviously the highlight of the season was the Dom Moloney 4th XI managing to snare the clubs first
premiership for 4 years with a thrilling victory over Bundoora on their deck. The victory showed a magnificent
never say die attitude by all concerned and you guys should be very proud of your efforts over the season
and ultimately in the finals.
Congratulations to Ben McLeod on winning the Bud Walder Medal on the back of an excellent and
consistent season with both bat and ball in the first XI.
To round this out I would like to once again thank everybody involved with the club for their efforts and
support over the season and representing the club in an excellent manner that I am sure other clubs envy.

NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
1ST XI CAPTAIN REPORT
A finish of 8th position after the home and away season is a disappointing but probably fair indication of our
season (5 wins, 5 losses and 3 no results).
The team was very competitive in all games we played and unfortunately on a few occasions we had a bad
hour or so which was the difference in winning or losing.
With the loss of Brendan Joyce and Peter Harper from last season there was an opportunity for guys to get
more opportunity batting in the top order and I am very pleased to say that these opportunities were taken.
The batting as a whole was very consistent and in fact we managed to make the most runs within our group.
The key to this was that everybody chipped in when required and we didn’t rely on any one player to do the
bulk of the scoring which was very pleasing. Terrific career best seasons were had by Patrick Tuohey, Ben
McLeod and Travis Miles who all managed over 300 runs for the season.
The bowling was the main area of concern over the season with a few sides getting a hold of us which just
put too much pressure on the batsman to get them in reply. Ben McLeod (22 wickets) was the go to man for
the most part of the season and he received excellent support from Patrick Tuohey, Clint Kennon, Alexander
Young, Michael Tuohey and Mitchell Carey when he was injury free.
The ground fielding and catching was pretty good as a whole over the season which culminated in some
excellent run outs. This area was lead brilliantly by David Bennett who did a fantastic job as wicket keeper.
His glove work, encouragement and cricket knowledge was a great support to myself and the rest of the
players.
What I would like the players to most take out of the season is that individually and collectively we are a very
good side who are all well and truly good enough to play at this level which can be seen by performances
made over the season. We held our own against the sides that made the finals and with a bit of luck and
good management we could have easily beaten all of them and been fighting it out come March. Self belief
is a great thing and I am very confident in any player being able to do the job that is presented to them.
The fighting qualities of the side couldn’t be more evident than when we managed two outstanding wins
against adversity. Firstly we managed to beat Bayswater after they were 1/180 chasing 250 with 30 overs
still to go and we bowled them out in the last over, and against Box Hill when we needed 8 runs to win with
only 1 wicket in hand and Clint Kennon & Alexander Young kept their nerve and got us over the line.
I would like to thank Clint Kennon for his great career at Balwyn. Clint came to the club over 10 years ago
from the Yarra Valley/Ringwood district competitions as an off spinner and middle order batsman. Clint’s
main role was as an off spinner of great quality and control and he will be solely missed as a player and
person at Balwyn. Clint has decided to hang up the spikes on a permanent level due to wanting to spend
more quality time with his family and a couple of niggling injuries which may be telling his body something.
Hopefully Clint may well be available for some cameo performances down the grades in the future years.
Clint has been a great club man as indicated by spending many years on the committee and his
competitiveness and positivity will certainly be missed around the club.
I would also like to thank David Bennett for his great career at Balwyn. David came to the club around the
same time as Clint from premier club Hawthorn/Monash as a promising leg spinner/batsman. Somehow
Benno took the gloves one day and never looked back as a keeper. Benno has great fitness and
concentration and his glove work and competiveness could not be questioned and he will be a very big loss
to both the club and the first XI as he is a very well respected player within the competition. Benno is unsure
as to whether he will continue playing cricket next season but the door is always open at Balwyn if you are
looking for a game.
Finally I look forward to next season already with much encouragement as we have unfinished business
from this season. We have a great group of senior players who are all well and truly competent at this level
and a finals spot should be the aim for next season.
Thanks to all players who represented the first XI this season. We have a great mix of players all at a great
age where we should be pushing to play our best cricket. I look forward to leading the side again and
watching the team continue to develop.

BOARD OF MANAGEMENT - PLAYING REPORTS
st
th
The 1 XI finished a commendable 8 after commencing the year with a number of question to be
answered. The batting had a couple of notable and well credentialed losses from 2008-09. This however
created opportunities and saw a much more even spread of contributions with four players in Patrick
Tuohey, Ben Hanley, Ben McLeod and Travis Miles all exceeding 300 runs for the season. In addition three
other players posted half centuries which indicated depth on a level not previously experienced and ensured
that collapses of a game changing nature were not as prevalent as in previous seasons.
The bowling continues to work in a tireless manner but the lack of a genuine strike bowler is not one that is
easily addressed from within, or indeed a problem unique to ourselves. Ben McLeod was the leading wicket
taker and like Patrick Tuohey and Ben Hanley, their all round contributions were often significant factors in
Balwyn’s better performances. Off Spinner Clint Kennon bowled with excellent control particularly when
wickets were harder to come by, and the side was indebted to Alex Young for his spell at Bayswater which
helped the side get a narrow victory and some momentum. Promising Mitchell Carey had a frustrating year
with shoulder troubles but his raw energy pace when on was a point of difference in the attack. Undoubtedly
the highlight of the year was the crushing victory over Kew and the regaining of the Carr/Farmer trophy.
Other laudable victories included a narrow win over Box Hill and an excellent victory over a well credentialed
Preston.
nd
The 2 XI under the leadership of Geoff Kiker was again expected to challenge strongly for finals and would
be slightly disappointed to have missed out particularly after starting the season so well. It wasn’t until the
first weekend in December that they were to suffer their first defeats with two games being decided across
the weekend. A poorly constructed run chase immediately after the mid season break against Box Hill meant
that they could ill afford any further slip ups. Unfortunately a narrow loss to nearest rival Kew in late January
saw them dependant on other results and a final round wash out cruelled any finals hopes.
Despite the disappointment of not making finals there were a number of noteworthy individual displays
particularly on the batting front. As a team the side scored its highest ever score of 7/398 against Bundoora.
During the course of this innings a record partnership at the level of 220 was also scored with Andrew
Walpole (157) and Geoff Kiker (100) putting on quite a show. Others to perform well with the bat over the
year were Glen Ward who returned to the club after time spent studying overseas during which he
represented Cambridge University at first class level, and Benn Gordon. Along with Andrew Walpole both
Glen and Benn were to play higher with Andrew and Benn making handy contributions at the higher level.
The undoubted highlight of the year was an astonishing victory over Bayswater just prior to the mid season
break. Chasing a modest score of 114 Balwyn collapsed from 0/27 to be 9/47 shortly before stumps on day
1. Resuming at 9/60 James Sheehan (67) and Jake Gordon (8*) fashioned a victory that was thought
improbable by most outside of those two. It truly was a great reward for two great clubman and one that will
be recounted for year to come.
The spread of wickets were fairly even with Geoff Kiker, a much improved Matthew Jones, and promising leg
nd
spinner Daniel Kiely all taking near 20 wickets. In Geoff Kiker the 2 XI were again fortunate to have his all
round contributions and understated leadership over the course of the season.
rd
The 3 XI were again extremely competitive under the leadership of Bill Leropoulos (and occasionally Brett
Oliver). After an indifferent beginning to the season the side was able to win a sequence of games after the
mid season break that assured a finals berth well short of the seasons end. Unfortunately this was to
culminate in a disappointingly narrow semi final loss to Preston. Whilst a premiership at this level would
represent an excellent reward for years of consistently high finishes, it is often a matter of taking the
opportunities presented. Unfortunately seven dropped catches in the semi final was a poor reward for the
rd
work put in over the year. In Bill the 3 XI (and club) are fortunate to be able to call on the acumen,
continuity and leadership that Bill has offered over a number of years.
rd
When all players were available the 3 XI were able to field a particularly experienced XI and the likes of
Chris Wilks, Damian Boland, Trent Silvers, Brett Oliver and Bill Leropoulos were well performed over the
course of the season. Encouragingly younger players such as Matthew O’Hern, Thomas Jacob, Kieran
McIvor and Nick Meadows showed excellent competitive instincts and recent RM Hatch graduates such as
Matthew Powell, Shaun Macdonald, Lachlan Fitzpatrick and Jack Tregear will all surely play a lot of cricket
in the senior XI’s in the very near future. Key performers with the bat were Boland, Oliver and Wilks whilst
Leropoulos, McIvor, Oliver and Wilks performed best with ball. Significantly and as the figures suggest this
was a very even side.
th
The 4 XI under the leadership of Matthew Wilson and Dominic Moloney were the absolute stand out
surprise of Balwyn’s on field activities. Despite not winning until Round 5 and then not securing a victory in
the final three rounds, the side was able to qualify for finals to break a run of near misses over a number of
15
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
years. From here the side was able win both away finals thrashing an unbeaten Preston and then narrowly
defeat Bundoora in a thrilling Grand Final to secure the clubs eleventh overall senior premiership. As with
previous years there was a large turn over of players (41) and understandably quality varied yet for once this
didn’t matter once a finals place was attained.
The turn around began with an astonishing victory over a powerful Coburg side with a number of well
credentialed players. Chasing 377 for victory, successive century partnerships by the unlikely alliance of
Dominic Moloney and Brendan Moore (playing his first game for eight seasons) and then Moloney and 12
year old Campbell Lane (playing his first senior game) ensured a famous victory. Moore scored 92 and
Moloney an astonishing 197 which rather put a previous highest score of 51 and batting average of 12 in to
obscurity. In fact Moloney’s season was to culminate in 664 runs, 16 wickets and successive finals innings of
102* and 89 when opening the batting in the first innings of both finals.
In addition to his obvious on field development he was to assume the captaincy from long time former
skipper in Matthew Wilson who was to move to Sydney at Christmas time to pursue career opportunities. It
was to be a cruel twist of fate that was to deny Matthew the opportunity of being part of this side given the
near decade he had captained this side. All around the club would acknowledge the contribution he has
made to this XI over the journey and it was fantastic that he was to be in Melbourne for presentation night to
receive his medallion and the photo boards that were kindly created and donated by David Meagher.
Whilst Moloney was the stand out batting performer others over the course of the year made pivotal
contributions. Nick Courtney as an opening bat and Ravi Mehta in the middle order both played consistently
well. Jon Kerr and Luke Simmons in the games they played gave the batting some flair and power as
evidenced in both finals. Of the others that played more than a handful of games, David Versteegen and
Jacob Jacob made useful contributions with the bat.
With the ball the contributions were fairly evenly shared though Tristan Harding with a semi final haul of 6/22
stood out with his improvement from the seasons outset and this was an excellent reward for a number of
luckless performances that preceded this return. Unfortunately he was to miss the Grand Final with an
important exam to gain entry in to medical school. Another who was unfortunate to miss the game through
injury was Jon Etty-Leal who has been a regular contributor at this level over the years. A number of bowlers
such as Tregear, Jacob and Simmons all contributed at crucial times and Simmons’ three late wickets in the
Grand Final was a huge factor as Bundoora were to lose 5/30 and fall agonisingly short of Balwyn’s score.
Other peripheral players all had moments that could help define them in the eyes of their team mates and
the larger supporter group that witnessed both days. Andrew Meagher holding a difficult skier at an
important time late in Bundoora’s innings and Chris Harding’s aggressive and clever run out shortly before
hand were vital. Tom Mead’s responsible 20* the day before and Campbell Lane’s under rated innings in
partnership with Kerr also significant parts of this premiership weekend. Special mention should also go to
young Luke Zagami who went from a very quite and reluctant wicket keeper to a popular and well performed
keeper who deservedly won the captains award.

NINETIETH ANNUAL REPORT
VSDCA R.M. HATCH UNDER 15 COMPETITION
October 2009 saw the beginning of the R.M. Hatch campaign on behalf of the Balwyn Cricket Club.
As in previous years the lack of co-operation from other regional selectors and the new phenomenon where
junior clubs now have practice matches on Sundays leading up to the commencement of their season
resulted in some frustration in getting the R.M. Hatch squad finalised and organized. At no time was a full
complement of players available either at training sessions or practice matches. Regardless of the
inconvenience it was considered we had put together a very competent squad who would do well in the
competition.
It is a well known fact there are moments in a cricket match when, if acted upon normally create a winning
result. With this thought in mind let’s evaluate our results. It would be fair to say our loss to Bundoora was a
loss we really had no control over. Weather conditions and two strange umpiring decisions decided the
game. Brunswick unfortunately was no match for us and it allowed us to get on the winners list.
Preston, a danger game brought to the fore the ability and fighting spirit of the boys resulting in one of the
best wins Balwyn has had over Preston for many years. Pressure was applied constantly during the game
and Preston found the pressure too much.
If I had had a magic wand I would have liked to erase the first 30 minutes of the match against Kew when
Kew were allowed to take some charge of the game. We did rest the game away from Kew when we were
batting and all but for a five ( 5 ) minute period after drinks in our innings we were on course to record a
victory. Those moments in cricket!
Our final game against Ivanhoe was never in doubt. Having suffered the humbling defeat against Kew it was
apparent in the rooms prior to the match the Balwyn boys had “Come to Play” and defeat was never a
possibility.
Being involved with a competition such as the R.M. Hatch competition means a lot of organization and
support is required and to that end I would like to acknowledge the co-operation and support I received from
all the parents with a special mention to Helen Fitzpatrick who took on the onerous task of organizing
lunches. Helen thank you.
To Elizabeth Orr for her sterling work once again assisting me with the R.M. Hatch. There is a multitude of
paperwork involved in the campaign and Elizabeth once again proved invaluable in the role of co-ordinator
as did Brett Oliver with respect the registrations and scorecards.
To the leadership team Lachlan Fitzpatrick, Brett Borland, Sam Powell and Shaun Macdonald, great job,
well done. May I add I thought Lachlan’s captaincy, particularly in the second week was outstanding and a
credit to him.
Finally to all the boys in the squad, thank you for your efforts. You can all walk away from the R.M. Hatch
competition with your heads held high.

The 1 XI narrowly missed finals with new recruits Craig Howard and James Lowrie featuring
prominently under the leadership of Paul Coloe.
Season 1999/00 saw the introduction of covers to the VSDCA competition and with that
commentary regarding the logistics of having players prepared to assist in the movement of them.
Current players Patrick Tuohey and Chris Wilks were bowling trophy winners. Geoff Kiker
celebrated his marriage to Nicole and his first century for the club.
The Annual Report made mention of the increasing financial burden faced with the introduction of
Mr Costello’s GST.
The Balwyn Park pavilion underwent some renovations with a new roof and balcony awnings

JUNIOR REPORTS
The junior section of Balwyn cricket club continues to provide local children with an opportunity to play
cricket and develop their skills in a friendly supportive environment. This season we fielded six teams in the
Eastern Cricket Association: two Under 10s, two Under 12s, and two Under 14s. We also hosted the
In2Cricket program (formerly known as Milo), expertly run once again by Elizabeth Orr.
We must acknowledge and thank the following team managers Arthur Apos and Rowan Barling (Under10s),
Kelly Allan and Chris Vanderkley (Under 12s) and Rod Appleby and Brendan Moore (Under 14s). We also
fielded our Under 15 RM Hatch team.
We congratulate and thank the ECA for administering such a huge competition. We thank the City of
Boroondara for their continued support and Kingswood College for allowing us the use of one of their
grounds. We thank and congratulate John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr for once again guiding our elite Under
15 RM Hatch team. A special thank you goes to senior player Dan Kiely who took every training session for
the year. Jonathon Chandler and Tristan Barlow very ably assisted him. Thank you guys.
Some of our cricketers had outstanding individual seasons. Special congratulations go to the following
players: Shaun D’Souza, Ben Smith, and Will Houston who each won the association bowling averages in
their divisions. Dan Houston won the association batting award and the Elizabeth Orr Medal for the most
outstanding cricketer in his competition. Well done Dan! Congratulations also to Campbell Lane. Aside from
his Under 14 duties, he also captained the ECA Under 12 rep team to a premiership and played in the senior
th
4 XI premiership team. Congratulations to Charlie Johnston for making the ECA under twelve rep team.
Our Under 10 Gold team won the premiership! They won 14 games and only lost once, which showed a
consistency of performance week in, week out. Every player made a contribution at some point throughout
the season and both new and old players worked hard to improve their game. Special thanks go to Phil
James and Mahesh for leading the team for two games and all the parents who provided lots of support for
morning teas and scoring. Congratulations go to the following trophy winners:
Batting: Kaushick Maheshwaran who made 229 runs at an average of 57.25.
Bowling: Harith Perera who took seven wickets.
All Rounders: Matt James who made 164 runs and took nine wickets and Xander Barling 191 runs and four
wickets.
Coach’s Award: James Heathcote.
The Under 10 Blue team was made up mostly of first year cricketers. The boys all developed their skills
through out the year and managed to win five games, to finish mid table. It is particularly pleasing to see the
development of young cricketers and this was particularly evident in this team. Congratulations go to the
following trophy winners:
Batting: Elliott Taylor with 129 runs,
Bowling: Will Steventon 15 wickets,
All Rounder: Anthony Apos with 74 runs and two wickets
Coach’s Award: Oskar Hosken.
Our Under 12 Gold team had a difficult year. Losing cricketers mid way through the season meant that the
team did not have 11 players for their matches; it was a great effort to see out the year despite this. The
boys still won two matches and acquitted them selves particularly well. Congratulations to the following
trophy winners:
Batting: Max Chew Lee 112 runs.
Bowling: Shaun D’Souza: 19 wickets.
All Rounder: James Sunderland 27 runs and 9 wickets
Coach’s Award: Cody Everett.
Our Under 12 Blue team won four matches and finished mid table. With some first year cricketers in the
team this was an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to the following trophy winners:
Batting: Harry Vanderkley: 144 runs.
Bowling: Chris Vanderkley:12 wickets.
All Rounder: Tiernan O’Brien 143 runs and seven wickets.
Coach’s Award: Will Prowse.
The Under 14 Gold team just missed out on making the finals and won seven games for the season.
Congratulations to the following award winners:
Batting James Harkens 176 runs.
Bowling Ben Smith 13 wickets.
All Rounder: Tom Harley 92 runs and 12 wickets.

The Under 14 Blue team had an outstanding year. The boys worked hard on their cricket and are becoming
mature cricketers. Congratulations to the following award winners: Batting: Dan Houston 202 runs at an
average of 101.
Bowling: Will Houston 13 wickets at an average of 5.6.
All Rounders: Daniel Clark 182 runs, six wickets, four catches, one stumping, and Campbell Lane 126 runs,
nine wickets, five catches.
Coach’s Award: Jimmy Barling.
Congratulations go to the premiers in each of the divisions we played. Thank you also to the Mum’s and
Dad’s who continued to help make cricket at Balwyn a success.
See you all in 2010 / 2011.

IN2CRICKET / MILO CRICKET
2009/10 produced our most enjoyable and best-run Milo Have-A-Go and Have-A-Game season ever, thanks
to a super leadership team. The team consisted of Michael De Martinis and John Fitzgerald, who have been
involved for eight years and five years respectively. But more especially, they have co-ordinated the
programmes for the past three seasons, assisted by four official volunteers and many parents.
Thanks to Milo for sponsoring the programme, and this season providing a bat, ball, hat, and T-shirt in a
useful backpack. From early in November approximately 60 children came each Saturday morning to have
fun learning cricket skills. They were divided into three manageable groups.
For the third season, John Fitzgerald co-ordinated an excellent Have-A-Go programme, assisted by Darren
Thomas and most of the parents of the younger boys and girls. While the activities and mini-games
emphasize enjoyment, the participants learnt many skills for their future cricketing careers and we hope to
see them progress to Have-A-Game next season.
We also introduced a transition group who were too skilled for Have-A-Go but too inexperienced for Have-AGame. This group was coached by Greg McGlone who voluntarily undertook a Level 0 coaching course (via
computer) upon being asked to lead the group. He incorporated many new practices from the course which
were of benefit to the boys.
The Have-A-Game programme, for older and more skilled boys, continues to be a success in preparing
them for teams, as evidenced by the Balwyn Premiership Under 10 team, most of whom learnt their cricket
skills through our Milo programme. For the third season Michael De Martinis, assisted by Christine and
Aaron Turner and nearly all the parents, coached them in the finer points of cricket. After the warm-up, the
group divided for two games using the mini-cricket gear (harder balls, wooden bats, smaller gloves and
pads), where they gained greater exposure to the rules and skills of the game, including field placements
and teamwork.
After eleven fun sessions, the boys and girls had acquired many skills and were ready for the final session of
games with or against their parents. Following the games, sausages were ready to be enjoyed by everyone
thanks to the Club President, James Sheehan, Junior Co-ordinator Brendan Moore and Committee-man
Tony Walpole.
Finally a very special thank you to Michael and John, who have expertly co-ordinated and coached for the
past three seasons. Sadly, it is also farewell to both; I am very grateful for their great support and expertise.
Also thank you to Greg, Darren, Christine and Aaron and all the parents who assisted in organizing the skills
practices and games for Balwyn Cricket Club.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT
To the members of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated
Scope
I have audited the attached special purpose financial report, comprising the balance sheet, the income
statement, statement of recognised income and expense and the notes, of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated
for the financial year ended 30 April 2010. The Committee of Management is responsible for the financial
report and have determined that the accounting policies used are consistent with the financial reporting
requirements of the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated’s constitution and are appropriate to meet the needs
of the members. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an
opinion on it to the members of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated. No opinion is expressed as to whether
the accounting policies used are appropriate to the needs of the members.
The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the Committee
of Management’s financial reporting requirements under the Club’s constitution and Cricket Victoria’s Criteria
Assessment. I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial
report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which
it was prepared.
My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures included
examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial
report. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the
financial report is presented fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in the notes to the
financial statements. These policies do not require the application of all Accounting Standards and other
professional reporting requirements.
The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.
Qualification
As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated to
maintain an effective system of internal control over donations, subscriptions and other fundraising activities
until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to fundraising was limited
to amounts recorded.
Qualified Audit Opinion
In my opinion, except for the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have been determined to be
necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report
presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in the notes to the financial statements,
the financial position of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated as at 30 April 2010 and the results of its
operations for the year then ended.
