Die Ribera del Duero erstreckt sich über deutlich
mehr als 100 Kilometer
entlang des Duero von
San Esteban de Gormaz
im Osten bis Valladolid
im Westen. Die Weinberge befinden sich auf unterschiedlichen Böden der
Kastilischen
Hochebene
und reichen von rund 700
bis über 1000 Meter Meereshöhe. Die Vielfalt der Weine ist daher groß. Kräftig sind sie eigentlich
alle, doch die Stile reichen von dick und kompottig über kernig und fest
bis elegant und fein. Sich rein nach dem Alkoholgehalt zu orientieren,
hilft einem da nicht weiter. Selbst mit 15% Alkohol sind manche Weine noch straff und anregend, während andere bei deutlich niedrigeren
Alkoholgraden schon einseitig marmeladig wirken können. Auch wenn
die breite Masse der Produzenten noch einer bei einheimischen und
amerikanischen Kritikern derzeit offenbar äußerst beliebten, kompottigwarmen Stilrichtung frönt, gibt es heute überraschend viele Betriebe,
die entschieden feinere, komplexere und charaktervollere Weine keltern.
Ein paar davon tragen große Namen, viele sind aber noch relativ unbekannt; manche existieren überhaupt erst seit kurzer Zeit. Es lohnt sich
unbedingt, nach ihnen Ausschau zu halten. Spannender jedenfalls war
die Weinszene in der Region wohl noch nie.

The River of Crimson Rivers
The River of Crimson Rivers The Ribera del Duero region stretches over
a distance of somewhat more than 100 kilometres along the river Duero,
from San Esteban de Gormaz in the East to Valladolid in the West. The
vineyards are located on different types of soil of the Castilian plateau,
at altitudes varying from around 700 to more than 1000 metres above
sea-level. As a result, the wines are very diverse. Basically all of them are
powerful, but the styles vary from heavy and jammy through firm and
crisp to elegant and noble. It does not help much to look at the alcohol
level when trying to determine the style of a wine. Even at 15% levels,
some wines are still firm and stimulating, while others with a markedly
lower alcohol level may already appear jammy and one-dimensional.
Although a large majority of producers currently still follows the warm,
jammy style currently still favoured by both local and American critics,
there are currently surprisingly many producers making much more
elegant, complex wines full of character. Some of these producers carry
big names, but many of them are still relatively unknown, and indeed
some of them have only been operating for a very short time. It is
definitely worth the effort keeping your eyes open for these. Certainly,
the wine scene in this region has never been more exciting.

Chefverkoster Marcus Hofschuster und sein Team arbeiten hauptberuflich für den Weinführer und nehmen sich für jede Weinbeurteilung ausreichend Zeit. Alle Weine werden ausschließlich im
neutralen Proberaum von Wein-Plus in Erlangen verkostet. Die
Verkostung erfolgt blind, so dass Wein und Erzeuger dem Verkoster bei der Bewertung nicht bekannt sind. Die Weine werden
grundsätzlich in zusammenhängenden Serien gemeinsam mit
ähnlichen Weinen probiert, um einen sinnvollen sensorischen
Rahmen zu gewährleisten.
Head taster Marcus Hofschuster and his team work full-time for
the wine guide, and ensure they take sufficient time for each and
every wine rating and description. All the wines are tasted without
exception in the neutral surroundings of the tasting room at the
Wein-Plus head office in Erlangen, Germany. Tasting is always done
blind, so that the tasters do not know during the tasting which
wine or which producer they are rating. Wines are always tasted in
logical series together with other similar wines, in order to ensure a
meaningful sensory framework for the descriptions and ratings.
Marcus Hofschuster genießt ein herausragendes Renommee als

Marcus Hofschuster enjoys an outstanding reputation as a conscientious and incorruptible expert. His team consists of tasters
who are likewise experienced, and have professional training in
wine. The tasting system is fully supported by a computer system, with protection built in against errors of entry and mix-ups.
Ratings are constantly monitored by inserting counter-bottles,
which are also tasted blind.

mindestens 80 Punkten aufgenommen. Das Bewertungssystem
wird bei Wein-Plus strenger angewandt als bei anderen Weinführern heute üblich. Die einzelnen Punkte entsprechen folgenden
Kategorien:
Wines are scored in accordance with the international 100 point
system. Only wines that score a minimum of 80 points are included in the wine guide. At Wein-Plus, the scoring system is
applied more strictly than is usual in the case of other wine guides. Specifically, the points scores correspond with the following
categories:
● 80 bis 84 Punkte: sehr gut
● 80 to 84 Points: very good
● 85 bis 89 Punkte: ausgezeichnet
● 85 to 89 Points: excellent
● 90 bis 94 Punkte: hervorragend
● 90 to 94 Points: outstanding
● 95 bis 99 Punkte: groß
● 95 to 99 Points: great
● 100 Punkte: einzigartig
● 100 Points: unique
