The 200 islands of the Maldives in the northern Indian Ocean are
among the favourite destinations of winter-weary travellers in search
of a dream and are known around the world for their fantastic
diving and snorkeling. At long last, golf has been added to the list
of recreation activities – albeit at a truly exclusive resort: Shangri-La‘s
pristine Villingili Island, part of the atoll of Addu.

olfen auf den Malediven?
Wo gibt’s denn sowas?“,
dachten wir, packten unsere Sets und ab ging
es nach Villingili. Auf der
ehemals unbesiedelten
Insel, wo einst nur der
Tagesfang unter Sternen
gegrillt wurde und die vorgelagerte Lagune den Einheimischen als Planschbecken diente, wird heute für uns „großer
Bahnhof“ zelebriert:
„Maruhaba and Welcome to Shangri-La!“,
ein zehnköpfiger Spalier − vom General
Manager bis zum Spa Direktor − empfängt
uns am Anlegesteg mit einem Tropenurlaubs-Cocktail, der nach Limetten,
Ingwer und gleich ein wenig Glückseligkeit schmeckt. Der 70-minütige Flug über
die unzähligen Eilande von der Hauptinsel Malé auf das weltferne Addu-Atoll
war schon atemberaubend, Villingili ist
jedoch traumschön und sieht genau so
aus wie es die knallbunten Kataloge der

Reiseveranstalter versprechen. Eingebettet in türkisblaues Wasser, das man mit
Photoshop nicht besser nachempfinden
könnte, ist das gut drei Kilometer lange
und 800 Meter breite Eiland. Das klingt
immer noch winzig, ist für maledivische
Verhältnisse aber schon richtig groß.
Mit den Ansprüchen der Gäste ist auch
der Platzbedarf gestiegen. Kleine Inseln
mit nur wenigen Villen und RobinsonCrusoe-Feeling sind längst nicht mehr
der Renner: „Big is beautiful!“, lautet die
neue Tendenz auf den Malediven. Und
trendgemäß scheint man hier wirklich
mehr Auslauf zu haben.
Das Beste daran ist, dass passionierte Golfer hier nicht mit Entzugserscheinungen
zu kämpfen haben. Der erste Golfplatz
auf den Malediven, die vor 2.000 Jahren
von einem nomadischen Seefahrervolk besiedelt wurden, erstreckt sich immerhin
über 7,5 Hektar. An sieben Par 3-Löchern
und zwei Par 4’s, allesamt benannt nach
heimischen Meeresbewohnern wie Green
Der Name Shangri-La steht symbolträchtig für
einen sagenumwobenen fiktiven Ort – ein LamaKloster am Shangri-Gebirgspass im Himalaya.
Turtle, Barrakuda oder Mantaray, können
wir am Südende der Insel ganz entspannt
an unserem Handicap feilen. Denn der gesamte Platz gehört uns meist alleine, mal
ganz abgesehen von den fliegenden Hunden, die uns von Abschlag zu Abschlag
zu verfolgen scheinen. Daher werden in
absoluter Ruhe alle erdenklichen Schläge

von Mid-Irons über die Wedges bis hin
zum Short-Game trainiert. Der Platz hat
zudem etwas mit schottischen Linkskursen gemein: alle Holes liegen direkt
am Ozean. Auf Loch 5 ist der Kurs dann
dadurch sogar recht anspruchsvoll. Und
Hole 8 ist aufgrund seiner 5,1 Höhenmeter nicht nur der höchste Punkt der
Insel, auch der Blick von „dort oben“ auf
das wild brandende Meer ist zum Sterben
schön. Durch die ständig wechselnden
Winde und die je nach Gezeitenhub auftretenden natürlichen Wasser-Hindernisse
wird man zudem vor neue Herausforderungen gestellt! Daher sind Longhitter
nicht wirklich gefragt. Doch unsere missglückten Abschläge ins Wasser werden
zum Klacks, angesichts des faszinierenden
Blickes auf den Indischen Ozean und die
akkurat gestutzten und perfekt gepflegten Fairways. Durch den sensiblen Umgang mit der bestehenden Landschaft
sind Letztere mit Seashore-PaspalumGras bepflanzt worden, einer Grassorte,
der die salzige Luft nichts anhaben kann.
Einziger Wermutstropfen: Die Greens sind
dadurch etwas langsam.
Glücklicherweise hat das Shangri-La’s
Villingili weitaus mehr aufzuweisen als
den ersten anständigen Golfplatz auf
den Malediven. 132 Villen verteilen sich
unglaublich großzügig über die Insel.

direkt dort, wo das Meer tosend ans Riff
schlägt, andere verstecken sich in dichtem
tropischen Grün, wo Papayabäume, Banyanfeigen auf mannshohen Wurzeln und
Guaven um die Wette eifern. Einige Grundrisse wurden sogar eigens geändert, um
die prächtigen Bäume nicht fällen zu
müssen. Die Water Villas schweben auf
Pfählen über der kristallklaren, türkisen
Lagune. Die kleinsten Villen (Wasservillen)
sind etwa 160 Quadratmeter, die größte
fast 230 Quadratmeter groß.
Wir dürfen in Villa Nr. 207, einem eleganten
Strand-Anwesen aus Tropenholz, wohnen.
Es ist überwältigende 190 Quadratmeter
groß, verfügt über einen Wohn- und Schlafpavillon, eine freistehende Badewanne,
Innen- und Außendusche und einen Garten, wo weiße Frangipani betörend duften.
Dem Himmel so nah – oder besser gesagt
dem Äquator. 50 Kilometer südlich davon bietet sich ab 17 Uhr für Romantiker
eine ideale wie abwechslungsreiche Kulisse: Mal versinkt ein feuerroter Ball am
Horizont, mal zersplittert die Sonne an
einer Wolkenbank und rötlich-orange
getünchte Wolken sinken am Ende des
Horizonts nach unten, und tauchen ihn in
Logenplatz am Ozean
ein farbenfrohes Fresko. Später, wenn die
Hotel-DJane ihre groovigen Sounds in der
M-Lounge zum Besten gibt, werden die
Tische für „Romantic Diners“ am Sandstrand daneben eingedeckt und in den
Kochtöpfen brutzeln die feinsten Fische
und Schalentiere, die das Meer hergibt.
Hier wird ja aus dem Vollen geschöpft,
weil das Addu-Atoll für maledivische
Verhältnisse weit abgeschieden, am südlichsten Zipfel des Landes liegt. Dahinter
kommt nur noch Wasser. Daher bezaubern die allerbuntesten Korallengärten –
besonders rund um die „Whispering Palms
Water-Villen“, in denen es von bizarren
Meerestieren nur so wimmelt. Doktor- und
Papageienfische, Trompetenfische und
Muränen sind nur einige Fische, die sich
zwischen den Steinkorallen tummeln.
Hai-life statt Inselkoller – aber auch sonst
ist für reichlich Abwechslung gesorgt. Wir
spielen im Schatten der uralten wie mächtigen Banyanbäume Beachvolleyball, flirten mit Hunderten von Delfinen, die sich
innerhalb des Addu-Atolls täglich ein Stelldichein geben, naschen Maracujas und
Mangos aus dem Hausgarten und schnorcheln mit Schildkröten und Katzenhaien
um die Wette. Und was macht ein Paradiesvogel, wenn er wieder aufgetaucht ist?
Herrlich speisen etwa. Kulinarisch
verwöhnt das Resort nämlich sogar mit
drei Restaurants. Die Zutaten stammen

größtenteils von lokalen Bauern und kooperierenden landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben der umgebenden Inseln und Atolle,
aber auch aus eigenem Anbau. So wird
im „Chef’s Garden“ im Zentrum der Insel,
mit der Zucht verschiedenster Gemüsesorten, aber auch Kräutern und Gewürzen
experimentiert, die später ihren Weg in
viele der Gerichte finden. „Dr. Ali’s“ etwa
serviert in drei Themen-Zimmern Gerichte
aus den Kulturen des Indischen Ozeans,
des Südchinesischen Meers und des Arabischen Golfs. Die Speisekarte hier könnte
eigentlich auch als Buch durchgehen und
spätestens beim Anblick der Weinkarte
sollte man Sommelière Winnie zu Rate ziehen. Seafood-Liebhaber müssen zudem
unbedingt auf die Terrasse des „Fashala“
am nördlichsten Punkt der Insel, dessen
Fokus auf Fine Dining liegt. Dort streicht
der Wind bei meist sternenklaren Nächten
durch die Palmblätter und von der Bar weht
leise traditionelle Bodu-Beru-Musik herüber, die an afrikanische Trommeln erinnert
und uns langsam in Schlafmodus versetzt.
Während wir auf das Schnellboot warten
Spa(ß) mit Ritualen
und von einem schneeweißen DhondheeniVogel – das Symbol des Addu-Atolls –
umkreist werden, schauen wir hinüber
zu unserer Trauminsel. Wie ein Schattenbild liegt sie im mittlerweile silbern
funkelnden Meer. Wir freuen uns still auf
unsere Massage im Chi-Spa, das nach dem
Vorbild einer Oase im maurischen Stil als
separates Dorf erbaut wurde. Die Anwendungen basieren Shangri-La gemäß auf
den Philosophien und Ritualen des alten
Chinas und der Himalaya-Region. Auch
typische regionale Produkte wie beispielsweise Cowrie-Schneckenmuscheln, die
eine tausendjährige Tradition auf den
Malediven haben, werden integriert. Und
statt esoterischem Tüdelü bringen hypnotische Vogelstimmen und das tosende
Riff unsere Seelen in eine andere Betriebstemperatur. Die Massage mit warmem
Kokosöl löst ähnliches aus wie eine Überdosis Valium – nämlich Tiefenentspannung
bis in den letzten Winkel unseres Gehirns,
die noch stundenlang anhält. Ach, wie wir
das zu Hause vermissen werden!

Where can you find
something like this nowadays?”, we wondered,
packing up our clubs and
heading for Villingili.
On the formerly uninhabited island, where once
upon a time only the day’s catch
was grilled under the stars and the upstream lagoon served the locals as paddling pools, a big red carpet is being rolled
out for us today:
“Maruhaba and Welcome to Shangri-La!”,
a ten-headed row of greeters waiting on
the jetty − from the General Manager to
the Spa Director − welcomes us with a
tropical holiday cocktail that tastes of
limes, ginger and the spice of a little bliss.
The 70-minute flight over the endless archipelago stretching out from the
main island of Mahé to the remote Addu
Atoll was already staggering enough,
but Villingili island is as lovely as a
dream and looks just like the brightly coloured catalogues of our tour operator
promised it would.
Three kilometres long and 800 m wide,
the atoll is enveloped by turquoise-blue
water that not even Photoshop could
make any more entrancing. Though the
atoll may sound tiny, in the Maldives it’s
actually rather sumptuously large. Pushed
by the demands of visitors, the need for
more space has gone up. Small islands

with just a few villas and that Robinson
Crusoe feeling are no longer the hit of
the season: “Big is beautiful!”, is the new
trend in the Maldives. And, keeping with
the trend, there does appear to be more
room to unwind in here.
The best of it is that avid golfers need
suffer no withdrawal symptoms. The
first golf course in the Maldives,
which were settled by nomadic seafarers
2,000 years ago, rambles at least
over 7.5 hectares.

named after local marine life such as the
green turtle, the barracuda and the man-

ta ray – give us the relaxed opportunity
to improve our handicap here at the
southern end of the island. The whole
place, after all, seems ours alone, apart
from the fruit bats that seem to haunt us
from tee to tee. All strokes conceivable,
taking up mid-irons to wedges to putters,
are practised in absolute peace. The
course also has something in common
with Scottish links courses: all the holes
lie hard by the ocean. At the fifth hole, it
makes the course turn downright
challenging. And the eighth hole is not
only the highest point of the island, at
5.1 metres, but the view of the wildly
surging sea from up there is beautiful
enough to die for.
The ever-shifting winds and the natural
water hazards brought on by the tides
constantly throw up new challenges for
the golfer. Long hitters don’t really need
their A-game here. But our botched slices that send up spouts in the water are
easily gotten over, given the fascinating
view of the Indian Ocean and the precisely trimmed and perfectly manicured
fairways. The existing landscape has been
handled sensitively, planted with seashore
paspalum grass, a hardy cultivar that has
nothing to fear from the salty air. The
only down-side: the grass makes the
greens somewhat slow. Fortunately, the
Shangri-La’s Villingili island has far more
going for it than the first decent golf
course in the Maldives.
Generously spread over the island are 132
villas. Something for every taste is there
under the tropical greenery: the oceanview villas are set down where the roaring sea beats against the reef, while others are tucked away in the dense tropical
lushness of papaya trees, banyan trees
that soar up off man-sized roots, guava,
and palms. Some blueprints were even
specially modified to avoid cutting down
the magnificent trees.
The Water Villas float on stilts above the
crystal-clear, turquoise lagoon. The smallest villas (water villas) are approximately 160 square metres, the largest nearly
230 square metres in size.

Later, when the Hotel DJ is laying down
her cool sounds in the M-lounge, the ‘Romantic Diners’ tables are set out on the
sandy beach and the finest fish and shellfish the sea can yield up sizzle in the
saucepans next to them.
And the resources are plentiful, because
the Addu Atoll lies very far away, on the

Maldivian scale of things, in the southernmost tip of the country. There’s nothing but water around it. Under the waves
the most colourful coral gardens abound,
particularly around the “Whispering
Palms Water Villas”, and teem with bizarre sea animals. Doctor- and parrotfish,
trumpet fish and moray eels are only a
few of the fish that swim among the stony
corals. Shark life instead of island fever
– otherwise, there’s plenty of variety to
be had. We play beach volleyball in the
shadow of banyan trees as ancient as
they are mighty, splash about in the midst
of the hundreds of dolphins that rendezvous every day inside the Addu Atoll, nibble passion fruits and mangos from the
garden, and have a snorkel race with turtles and cat-sharks. And what does a bird
of paradise do when he comes back up
for air? He finds a lordly meal.
With its three restaurants, the resort spoils
for choice. The ingredients come largely
from local farmers and farms on the surrounding islands and atolls, but also from
the resort’s own gardens. In the “Chef’s

indoor and outdoor showers, and a garden where white frangipani give off a
heady fragrance.
The sky hangs close – or better said, the
Equator. Fifty kilometres south of here,
at five o’clock in the afternoon a stage
as ideal as it is rich in contrasts is set for
romantics: a fire-red ball sinks into the
horizon, or at times into a raft of clouds,
washing them with reds and oranges as
it falls away under the horizon, bathing
the heavens in a colourful fresco.

lovers absolutely must head out to the
terrace of the “Fashala” at the northernmost point of the island, which sets its
tables strictly for fine dining. Most nights,
under skies that are usually starry, a
breeze blows through the palm fronds,
while from the bar wafts soft, traditional
Bodu-Beru music. Reminiscent of African
drums, it slowly lulls us into sleep mode.
While waiting on the speedboat, circled
by a snow-white Dhondheeni, or white
tern – the symbol of the Addu Atoll – we
look across to the island of our dreams,
lying silhouetted against the sparkling
silver sea. We are looking forward to our

of ancient China and the Himalayan region. Typical regional products, such as
cowrie snail shells, which have a thousand-year old tradition in the Maldives,
are integrated into the treatments. And
instead of esoteric chanting, the mesmerising birdsong and the crashing of
the sea over the reefs take our inner beings to another level of heat. Much like
an overdose of valium, the massage with
warm coconut oil brings on deep relaxation in the furthest corners of the mind,
and it lasts for hours. Ah, how we’ll miss
