Herstellungsverfahren
Das ätherische Estragonöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation aus dem blühenden Estragon-Kraut
(Artemisia dracunculus) gewonnen. Dabei dient heißer Wasserdampf als Trägerstoff für die leicht
flüchtigen organischen Komponenten der Pflanzenteile. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der
organischen Bestandteile des ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim Abkühlen eine spontane
Phasentrennung statt, so dass das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die Ausbeute liegt
zwischen 0.2 und 3.0%.[1,2]
Manufacturing method
The essential tarragon (estragon) oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the flowering herb of tarragon
(Artemisia dracunculus). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the parts of
the plant. Due to the non miscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon
cooling and the essential oil can be easily separated. The yield is between 0.2 and 3.0%.[1,2]
Botanischer Ursprung des Estragonöls
Die Art Estragon (Artemisia dracunculus) steht in der Gattung
Artemisia (Untertribus: Artemisiinae, Tribus: Anthemideae) in der
Unterfamilie Asteroideae, welche zur Familie der Korbblütler
(Asteraceae) gehört. Estragon wird veraltet auch Dragon oder
Dragung genannt, was auf seine volkstümliche Anwendung bei
Bissen giftiger Tiere (Drachen und Schlangen) und als
dämonenvertreibendes Kraut hinweist. Wahrscheinlich stammt der
Estragon aus Zentralasien und Sibirien und wird heute weltweit
angebaut. Estragon wächst als mehrjährige, krautige Pflanze. Dabei
werden Wuchshöhen bis zu 1.5 Meter erreicht. Die Pflanze bildet
zahlreiche, verzweigte Stängel aus. Die ungestielten Blätter sind
schmal und lanzettförmig, ganzrandig und zeigen eine leichte
Einkerbung an den Rändern. Zudem sind die Blätter schwach
behaart und duften charakteristisch. Die grün-gelben Blüten stehen
in Rispen, wobei der Estragon nur selten zur Blüte und zur
Ausbildung von Samen kommt. Die Vermehrung erfolgt zumeist über Wurzelstecklinge. [3]

Asterales. Tarragon is native to Central Asia and Siberia and is now cultivated worldwide. Tarragon grows as a
perennial herbaceous plant. It will reach heights of growth up to 1.5 meters. The plant forms numerous branched
stems. The sessile leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, entire and show a slight indentation on the edges. In
addition, the leaves are slightly hairy and smell characteristic. The green-yellow flowers are standing in panicles,
although the tarragon comes rarely to flowering and formation of seed. The proliferation occurs mostly via root
cuttings.[3]
Charakterisierung
Das ätherische Estragonöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, hellgelbe bis bernsteingelbe Flüssigkeit. Es besitzt
einen charakteristisch süß-würzigen Duft, der an Anis, Lakritze, Sellerie und Basilikum erinnert. Das
ätherische Öl löst sich gut in Alkohol (0.5 bis 1:1, Ethanol), Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen
Ölen. Es ist nahezu unlöslich in Wasser. Hauptbestandteile sind Methylchavicol (Estragol), Anethol
und Ocimen-Isomere. In geringeren Konzentrationen sind auch Limonen, Methyleugenol und PinenDerivate enthalten.[1,2]
Characterisation
Essential tarragon (estragon) oil is a mobile, light yellow to amber colored liquid. It has a characteristic sweet
and spicy scent, reminiscent of anise, licorice, celery and basil. The essential oil is good soluble in alcohol (0.5 to
1:1, ethanol), vegetable oils and other essential oils. It is almost insoluble in water. Major compounds are methyl
chavicol (estragol), anethole and ocimene. In lower concentrations are also included limonene, methyl eugenol
and pinenes.[1,2]
Verwendung in der Küche
Die jungen Triebe und Blätter des Estragon werden frisch geerntet und als Gewürz für Fisch-,
Geflügel- und Fleischgerichte verwendet. Beliebt ist er auch als Aromaträger für Essig, Senf und sauer
eingelegtes Gemüse (besonders Gurken). Das ätherische Estragonöl wird aufgrund des hohen
Gehaltes an Methylchavicol (Estragol) nicht direkt in der Zubereitung von Speisen und Getränken
verwendet.[3,2]
Use in kitchen

and meat dishes. It is also popular as a flavor carrier for vinegar, mustard and pickled vegetables (especially

cucumbers). The essential tarragon (estragon) oil is not used directly in the preparation of food and beverages,
due to the high content of methyl chavicol (estragole).[3,2]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Die Inhaltsstoffe des ätherischen Estragonöl besitzen eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften. Estragon galt lange Zeit als Dämonen-abwehrendes Kraut und wurde als Gegenmittel
bei Bissen von giftigen Tieren und wilden Hunden verwendet. Wissenschaftlich nachgewiesen ist die
entspannende Wirkung des ätherischen Estragonöl als Spasmolytikum (Entkrampfungsmittel) bei
Dysmenorrhoe (Menstruationsbeschwerden), Meteorismus (Blähbauch) und spastischer Kolitis
(Reizdarmsyndrom). Als Anwendung werden die innere Einnahme und Einreibungen empfohlen. Bei
einer viralen Erkrankung im Magen-Darmtrakt kann es die Vermehrung der Viren hemmen
(virustatische Wirkung). Ätherisches Estragonöl wirkt außerdem entzündungshemmend (antiinflammatorisch) bei entzündlicher Kolitis (Colitis ulcerosa). Aufgrund seiner östrogenähnlichen
Wirkung wirkt es zudem förderlich auf den Verlauf der Menstruation (emmenagog). Dadurch werden
die Begleiterscheinungen beim prämenstrualen Syndrom (PMS) und beim generellen Ausbleiben der
Periode (Amenorrhoe) gemildert.[4]
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential tarragon (estragon) oil have a number of health-related properties. Tarragon was
long regarded as a demon-repelling herb and has been used as an antidote for bites from venomous animals and
wild dogs. Scientifically secured are the relaxing effect of the essential tarragon (estragon) oil as a spasmolytic
(relexant agent) in dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), distention (bloat) and spastic colitis (irritable bowel
syndrome). As application, the internal intake and ointments are recommended. In a viral disease in the
gastrointestinal tract, it can inhibit the proliferation of the virus (virustatic effect). Essential tarragon
(estragon) oil also acts as an anti-inflammatory in inflammatory colitis (ulcerative colitis). It also acts
beneficial on the course of menstruation, due to its estrogen-like effect. Therefor, the side effects during
premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and the general absence of periods (amenorrhea) will be relieved.[4]
Aromatherapie
In der Aromatherapie wird ätherisches Estragonöl aufgrund seiner sedierenden (beruhigenden)
Wirkung als Riechstoff bei Hyperventilation in Folge von Angst und Panik verwendet. Es wirkt
zudem stärkend bei emotionaler Erschöpfung, die infolge von Stress oder ähnlichen Gründen
auftreten kann. Hier wird die tägliche Einnahme von einem Tropfen ätherischem Estragonöl als Kur
über einen Zeitraum von ca. 3 Wochen empfohlen.[4,5]
Aromatherapy
In aromatherapy, essential tarragon (estragon) oil is used for its sedative (calming) effect as a fragrance in
hyperventilation, as a result of fear and panic. It is also strengthening in emotional exhaustion, which can occur
due to stress or other reasons. Here, the daily intake of one drop of essential tarragon (estragon) oil is
recommended as a cure for a period of about 3 weeks.[4,5]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
In der Kosmetik wird das ätherische Estragonöl für würzig frische Parfümkompositionen verwendet.
Die Hauptmenge des weltweiten Produktion wird jedoch als Aromastoff für die Herstellung von
Mundpflegemitteln (Mundspülungen, Zahnpasta) eingesetzt. Es eignet sich sehr gut für Mischungen

mit Cardamom, Grapefruit, Koriander, Neroli, Orange, Pfeffer, Rose, Sandelholz, Zedernholz, Zimt
und Zitrone.[2,4]
Use in Cosmetic
In cosmetics, the essential tarragon (estragon) oil is used for spicy fresh perfume compositions. The bulk of the
world production, however, is used as a flavoring agent for the production of oral hygiene products
(mouthwashes, toothpastes). It is very suitable for blending with cardamom, grapefruit, coriander, neroli,
orange, pepper, rose, sandalwood, cedarwood, cinnamon and lemon.[2]
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Estragonöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich einzustufen.
Methylchavicol (Estragol) zeigt im Tierversuch karzinogene Eigenschaften. Limonen besitzt ein
allergenes Potential. Pinen-Isomere können bei dermaler Anwendung bei empfindlichen Personen zu
Hautreizungen und Ekzemen führen, bei oraler Aufnahme sind Nierenreizungen möglich.
Ätherisches Estragonöl eignet sich nicht für die Anwendung bei Babies, Kleinkindern und in der
Schwangerschaft. Beachten Sie auch die Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt und der Produktspezifikation.[2,6]
Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential tarragon (estragon) oil are classified as hazardous to health. Methyl
chavicol (estragole) shows carcinogenic properties in animal studies. Limonene has an allergenic potential.
Pinene isomers can lead to skin irritation and eczema in susceptible individuals when applied dermal and to
kidney irritation, when taken orally. Essential tarragon (estragon) oil is not suitable for use in babies, young
children and during pregnancy. Also note the reference in the material safety data sheet and the product
specification.[2,6]
