Ihre Hortensia Völckers Künstlerische Direktorin der Kulturstiftung des Bundes 2 Wem gehört die Like no other cultural institution, theatres have always been regionally rooted. A theatre performs for its town and thrives on it. When the German Federal Cultural Foundation initiated the HEIMSPIEL fund in 2006, the idea was to support in a targeted way projects that take theatre as a public venue seriously and step out on their doorstep directly seeking subjects for the stage. Since then, more than 50 productions have been financed by HEIMSPIEL fund amounting to around 2 million euros at German theatres from Aachen to Dresden, from Greifswald to Freiburg. One of these is “OPFERPOPP”, a provocative socio-critical play by the Thalia Theater Halle with young amateur actors that was awarded the prize for cultural education endowed for the first time by the State Minister of Culture in 2009. Another one is “Republik Freies Wendland - reaktiviert” by Schauspiel Hannover which, in autumn of 2010, restaged a chapter of regional history and was unexpectedly caught up by current political realities. In the theatre scene, the term HEIMSPIEL has come to designate a genre encompassing the most various forms of artistic dealings with local history, people and milieus, with current issues related to living together and the identity in one’s own town. This is reason enough for a first extensive stocktaking within the frame of HEIMSPIEL 2011 and to ask: What will remain of HEIMSPIEL after the year 2011? With Schauspiel Köln, we were able to win a partner whose type of programming proves how one can succeed in introducing strong new trends in the national theatre landscape and at the same time grasping the stage as a venue for critical reflection on local realities. I am especially grateful to the atre director Karin Beier and her team for our wonderful cooperation. Your Hortensia Völckers Artistic Director of the German Federal Cultural Foundation Words Of Welcome To become “Theatre of the Year” is surely one of the most enjoyable victories one can achieve in an away game.
