technical skills. This is just as decisive for
academic careers as it is for those who
plan professional practice outside the walls
of academia.
Leuphana offers modern courses of study
embedded in current scientific research
programs, which meet the requirements
of the labor market in universities and
non-university fields. High-quality teaching,
good student-teacher ratios and modern
amenities are the best conditions for successful studies. Subject-overarching knowledge, practical experience and skills, such
as the capacity for reflection and the ability
to interdisciplinary cooperation round off
the technical skills that you can acquire
thanks to the Leuphana study model.
The following pages will show you how
Leuphana Graduate School, together with
the purposely designed university services,
offers manifold development and career
opportunities. They will make you discover
the benefits of Leuphana with its unique
content and structural concept, which
should help you turn these studies into a
successful chapter of your life.

MASTER’S PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Leuphana Graduate School’s Master’s Programs are combined into three thematically over-arching programs: The Master’s Program in Arts & Sciences, the Master’s Program in Management & Entrepreneurship and the Master’s Program in Education.
In spite of the different focal points of their contents, all Master’s Programs are structured along
one and the same interdisciplinary line: Students select a core subject – their Major.
The Major occupies the substantial part of the study and ensures that successful completion
corresponds to a competitive subject-related profile. It also determines the academic qualification
degree (LL.M. / M.A. / M.Sc.), making it the primary identification of students.
A further possibility open to the students is the put accents with respect to their own interests and
a future profes-sion. These individual specializations are made possible according to the course of
studies by an elective subject, or Minor subject.
The compulsory and elective subject area is flanked by Complementary Studies and Intra-Disciplinary Issues. The Complementary Studies, which are compulsory for all students on a master’s
program and are studied collectively, serve to complement – and reach beyond – subject-related
contents.

COMPLEMENTARY
STUDIES PROGRAM
Essential studies to
reflect on sciences in
an interdisciplinary
context
15 CP
Aims of the Complementary studies
To alternate perspectives
— engage with students of other subjects
— train communication and cooperation skills
COMPLEMENTARY STUDIES
The Complementary Studies are a special feature among the programs offered by Leuphana. All
students on a Master’s Program, with the exception of those taking teacher training, pass through
them.
To broaden one’s mind
— train, evaluate and use insights and methods of different subjects
— learn analyzing facts, think critically and become flexible in mind
The Complementary Studies offer an overarching forum to the exchange between specialist disciplines, where students can reflect upon their (future) role as academics within a society and an
environment increasingly gaining in complexity.
To perceive science in its context
— know historical and current principles of science
— take on one’s social and academic responsibility
The three interdisciplinary modules aim at an understanding of knowledge and science within
various contexts. Treating fundamental ethics, sustainability and humanism issues generates
a responsible and action-oriented understanding of science. The interdisciplinary dialogue between
students of various disciplines furthers the development of methodological and socio-communicative competences, which are essential for future professional paths in business, society and
science. In this way, in times when knowledge is rapidly becoming obsolete, a constructive cooperation with colleagues of various disciplines and cultural backgrounds is already being prepared.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
All master’s programs at Leuphana Graduate School are accredited or are currently undergoing
accreditation. Every Master’s course of studies has a Quality Circle. These official feedback meetings are comprised of students and teaching staff. They convene once a year and discuss where
the course of studies can be optimized. The suggestions are implemented in the following months
at various levels; in many cases, in the form of a reform of the curriculum.
FAST TRACK
Particularly well-qualified Master’s students of Leuphana Graduate School can already complete
program modules of the semi-structured doctoral studies while on their Master’s Program. While
studying during that phase, students have the opportunity to already treat a field of research
intensively and lay down the subject of the master’s thesis as the basis for a subsequent doctoral
thesis.
The advantage of linking the master’s and doctoral studies is an early and beneficial integration
into the academic community, opening up a selection of qualifying measures within the framework
of the fund for the promotion of young academic talents.
External program advisory councils ensure that the programs of study at Leuphana Graduate
School are adapting to the changing needs of students and the professional world.
To ensure the high quality of teaching, all teaching staff at the Leuphana are committed to undergo
regular anonymous assessments of their teaching performance. Students can anonymously
communicate to teaching staff what they do well or less well in their classes. In addition to the
evaluation of individual courses there are study program-related surveys: at the end of the study,
there is the degree survey and after a few years, the Alumni survey. These results are also fed into
the development of courses with a survey on the completed degree, as well as a survey among
alumni after a few years. These results are also included in the further development scheme of the
programs.
If you want to go Fast Track, you must fulfill a few conditions: you must be enrolled on a major at
the Graduate School, provide evidence of special aptitude by a bachelor final grade of at least 1.5
(or ECTS grade A), a convincing written proposal for an academic project, as well as a provisional
confirmation from your supervisor followed by a personal selection interview.

PART-TIME STUDIES
For those who must combine a period of study with other demanding tasks, Leuphana has set up
regular part-time study facilities with a broader time frame, enabling attendance at classes,
research work, examinations as well as professional practice outside the university environment.
Part-time students only attend half of the classes per semester and pay half of the fees, correspondingly doubling their standard period of study.
SEMESTERTICKET AND STUDENT ID CARD
Part of the semester fee, which you transfer to the university before term begins, serves to finance
the SemesterTicket. All students receive a SemesterTicket for costless use in local public transport
together with their Student ID. It is valid in all regional trains in the whole of Lower Saxony and the
busses in the District of Lüneburg and also covers the fares between Lüneburg and Hamburg, Lübeck
and Bremen. Thanks to this ticket, a short trip to the beaches of the Baltic and North Sea or to the
Hamburg night-life poses no problem.
You will be allowed part-time study if for example you care for a member of your family, your children, if you are suffering from a serious illness or have to work for your living next to your studies.
ENROLMENT
Turn to Leuphana’s Student Services for any question regarding enrolment. During your time as
enrolled student, Students Services still remains responsible for administrative issues, in particular
for re-registration, leave of absence, change of course, de-registration, as well as for all examination
questions.
Since April 2011, Leuphana University of Lüneburg’s SemesterTicket is also valid as Cultural ticket
(Kulturticket). In cultural institutions, Lüneburg students receive a remaining ticket free of charge
upon presentation of their SemesterTicket at the ticket office half an hour before the performance
begins. At this moment in time, this offer comprises free entrance to more than 800 performances
per semester in the whole of Lüneburg. Institutions taking part in this scheme are, amongst others,
the Lüneburg Theater and St. John’s, St. Michael’s and St. Nicholas’ Churches with their
concerts, as well as the e.novum theater, the Ostpreußisches Landesmuseum in Lüneburg, the
Kulturforum Lüneburg and the Literaturbüro Lüneburg e.V.. Furthermore, the performances of the
following free groups are also comprised in the ticket: BachChor Lüneburg, Halle für Kunst and
the Kunstraum at Leuphana.

EXAMINATION REGULATIONS AND CURRILCULUM
REGISTERING FOR COURSES
Registration for the winter semester classes is activated from October 2nd, 2015 till October
26th, 2015. The places in compulsory classes are generally allocated by a simple listing procedure
without limit as to the number of attendees.
Faculty-overarching examination regulations (ER), apply to all master’s programs in conjunction
with their Subject-Specific Schedules (SSS). These documents form the legal basis structuring
your degree. It is therefore imperative that you make yourself acquainted with them. The documents are available to download from the Student Services page. They are officially published in
the Official Journal of the University, the Gazette.
The Examination Regulations lay down the general examination provisions. They are legally
binding and rule, amongst others, the process of study, examination dates, the recognition of
achievements, registration cut-off dates, withdrawal from examinations, and a lot more.
In the Subject-Specific Schedule for your Major, you will find all the rules, which apply specifically
to your course of studies, for example an overview and descriptions of the modules, which must be
taken, or the type and number of examinations. Trans-disciplinary courses, such as the Complementary or Management Studies, also each have their own Subject-Specific Schedules (SSS).
COURSE CATALOG ON MYSTUDY
The Catalog of courses is published on myStudy, the web-based service platform of Leuphana
University of Lüneburg’s four weeks before term begins. The User Guide on the home page of
myStudy explains how to set up an account, compile your own timetable, or register for classes.
But especially where elective and compulsory optional courses with a limited number of places
are concerned, there can be a random selection procedure. In two random selection phases from
October 2nd – 5th and from October 6th – 9th, you have the opportunity to apply for a place in
these classes. At the end of the second random selection phase, you decide if you wish to attend
that class or if you want to de-register from it, in order to liberate the place for someone else.

SUPPORT IS TO BE FIND DURING MASTER KICK-OFF,
OCTOBER 1 AND 2
The University ensures that adequate places are available and all students are able to pursue
their studies within the standard period. Registration details can be found in myStudy User
Guide. The description of the class contents also provides information on which application procedures apply to the classes you want to take.
REGISTERING FOR EXAMINATIONS
You can register for examination up to five working days before the date of the written examination over
the Central Online System qis. The registration is the same for all types of graded work, that is to say:
for presentations, essays, etc. and is made by an examination list sent directly to the relevant lecturer.
A corresponding form is automatically generated by teaching staff over the myStudy registration list.

COMMENCEMENT AND SCOPE
At the beginning of the Master’s Program,
the initial focus could well be on content
and organizational aspects: What classes
do I have to register for? What choices are
there? How do I register for these classes?
This quickly relegates other important
questions to the back burner: What do I
expect from my Master’s degree?
What is important to me? How do I reconcile my studies with other areas of life?
Leuphana Graduate School invites you to
the Master Kick-off event on October 1st
and 2nd. For a successful start in this new
chapter of your life you will be given, next
to administrative information, the chance
to reflect on your personal expectations
towards the Master’s Program and which
influence Leuphana’s guiding principles of
Humanism, Sustainability and ActionOrientation can have on your individual
studies’ and career planning.

MASTER KICK-OFF
The Master’s studies commence at the Graduate School before classes begin with the two-day
overture event Master Kick-off on October 1st and 2nd. As a Master’s student, you will receive
information on both days on the technical and organizational aspects of the studies and the curriculum of your program. You will be given an introduction in dealing with the campus management system myStudy, which you must master for the organization of your studies at Leuphana.
Furthermore, we will present Leuphana’s service facilities and provide the opportunity to be made
acquainted with the whole campus. During a guided tour, you will learn all about the uses offered
by the library and the conditions for utilization.
A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE WORKSHOP
In Leuphana’s understanding of education, academic, subject-oriented education, and personality
development are closely linked. Students are supported in developing a personality for socially-responsible action.
Another focus of the Master Kick-off, taking place at the same time, is the A Change of Perspective Workshop. Students are distributed in about twenty groups, and you will work in the
group specifically dedicated to your degree program on your own status quo and for your personal
educational perspective.
The workshops provide, in addition to the opportunity to clarify personal and professional expectations for the future, a very good opportunity to make first contacts with your fellow students and to
socialize. A welcome party for beginning students, including a ceremonial address, rounds off the
program.
You will also receive detailed program of the Master’s Kick-off, which is available as from
mid-September, per E-Mail.
With the A Change of Perspective workshop, we wish to give you the opportunity, as early as the
beginning of this new stage of your studies, to blow life into this postulate.
Within the framework of the master’s Kick-off, we give the existing professional orientation and development of individual educational perspectives to a reflexive examination of the personal status
of space, because the Master’s Program requires a renewed look at their own type of learning.
With the support of tutors of both sexes, you attend the workshop A Change of Perspective on
your own and do in-depth work in small work groups:
— What do you expect from your master’s degree?
— What can I do so that my master’s program an inspiring episode of your life, where I can
develop myself both professionally and personally?
— What contribution to the teachers, the institutions at Leuphana and my Fellow students afford?
— What offers of support gives me the Leuphana University in implementing my expectations?
The group results are implemented visually and presented to the university public.

MASTER’S PROGRAM INDUCTION WEEK
Following the launch event Master Kick-off, you are cordially invited to join the induction week
in preparation for your Master’s degree. From October 5th to 9th, we offer a wide-ranging program
of courses and events from all faculties. This provides the opportunity to meet the teaching staff
of your degree program before classes begin, which introduce you to the different subject content
and areas of your studies. In addition, you already get acquainted with your fellow students and
those from higher semesters, explore your place of study and not least obtain the latest condensed
technical information at the start to the first semester
In the middle of September, you receive a personal invitation to the foundation courses of your
Master’s program from the Graduate School. Already at the beginning of September, detailed information and the current catalog of courses will be published on the webpage.
For example, in the Master’s Program in Arts and Sciences, the teaching staff of the various
master’s courses will give insights into their fields of research and introductions to key subjects,
theoretical foundations and methods, such as ecology or chemistry in sustainability science or
in law and economics in the study program Political Sciences. In the degree program in Cultural
Studies, you will receive an introduction into the main points, the Minor and into the Integrative
Component of Cultural Studies (Cultural Sciences Area of Integration). You will find specific preparatory courses for freshmen of the Master’s Program Management & Entrepreneurship about
basic principles in statistics and methods in business administration. The teaching staff presents
all program curricula and their own research. They will want to know what previous experience and
knowledge you are bringing in from your bachelor degree, as well as your areas of interest in the
master program.

UNIVERSITY AND CAMPUS
Leuphana, as university, is not the complacent type satisfied with commonplace
models, but thinks behind box, brings in new
ideas, and is constantly evolving. It comes
as to no surprise, then, that the Leuphana
innovative study model has been awarded
several prices. This spirit of innovation is
reflected both internally and externally.
In this spirit, the Central Campus (Scharn-
horststraße) combines today to more than
37,000 m² of the pre-existing structures of
former military barracks with modern
architectural elements and offers generous
green site locations. The future will see a
new central building, designed by New York
architect Daniel Libeskind. It will form
another place to live and learn, meet and
exchange.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
The University Library provides academic literature in electronic and printed form. Start your
research from the library web page. From there, you can search the library catalog for literature
available on site. The literature research Engine LUX, as well as a variety of databases available,
serves for more extensive exploration. The BibApp enables easy search for literature while on the
move and you can use it to manage your library account. The app is available free of charge from
Play Store or iTunes.
IT AND MEDIA CENTER
The IT and Media Center is in charge of Leuphana’s computer technology and audiovisual media;
it operates the data networks at all university locations, the Internet and the central server.
Furthermore, it provides public computer workstations and wireless networks, as well as courses
and lectures.
The reading room of the library is a popular learning space on campus. There, you will find various
desks for reading, writing, research or group work. Other technical equipment, including scanners
(free to use with USB flash drive) and copiers (with Campus Copy Card), support public computer
terminals.
You can borrow books during opening hours by using the automated return and issue machines.
You need a library ID card, which you can acquire against a returnable deposit fee of €5.00. The
Library ID card registration is on the website.
Workrooms on the first floor of the Computing Center are extensively equipped with IT appliances.
The IT and Media Center provides the opportunity to use and borrow media and production
technology and equipment to borrow.

PARENTING STUDENTS
If you raise a child while studying, you obviously need to know a place where it is in good hands
while you attend seminars or learn in the library. The Student Organization of Eastern Lower Saxony
operates two daycare centers on Leuphana premises. You can also receive support from the students’ project EliStu (German Abbreviation of Students with children), which organizes a childcare
scheme and furthermore provides counseling, advice and networking for parents. The Family
Service of the Women’s and Gender Equality Bureau can provide information on relevant issues
concerning the compatibility of studies and family as well as child care offered. There, you will be
advised and supported in finding solutions for difficult situations.
ACCESSIBILITY
The entire campus of Leuphana is low-barrier accessible. This means that almost all buildings are
wheelchair accessible: ramps, automatic door openers and elevators. In addition, the campus is
equipped with reserved spaces for wheelchair users and has accessible toilets for disabled
people, so that everyone can use the facilities of the university largely without barriers or physical
limitations. If you have special needs and if you, for example, need a sign-language interpreter
or generally need help using the campus facilities, please contact the representative for students
with disabilities.
The parent-child workroom GradKids has been established by the Graduate School to allow shortterm or time-limited work with a child on campus, without giving the child into a day-care center.
The space can be used both for individual work with a child or children as well as group work,
discussions, as well as for counseling sessions with Graduate School employees – for example on
student counseling, stipends / grant consultation.
CANTEEN
The dining halls on the main campus and on Rote Feld Campus are operated by the Association
for Student Affairs Eastern Lower Saxony. As a student, you have price advantages when buying
canteen food. At the Canteen tills, you will receive Canteen Card (MensaCard) against a €5.00
returnable deposit, which you can use for cashless payment at the canteen. At both locations,
lunch is offered from Monday to Friday (during the semester break only on the main campus). On
the main campus, the canteen is also open in the evenings during term time.
ALLGEMEINER HOCHSCHULSPORT = SPORTS ON CAMPUS
As Leuphana students, you can conveniently use the gym and the sauna in Studio 21 and participate in the varied sports programs. These range from team sports through dance and gymnastics
classes to sports excursions and spa treatments, such as massages or Kinesiotape treatments.
CAFÉS AUF DEM CAMPUS
The Cafés Plan B and Café Neun – both housed in Building 9 on the Scharnhorststrasse campus –
sell coffee, drinks and snacks over the week.

INVOLVEMENT AND ACTION GROUPS
Over and above their own specialty, students
are also active in different organizations
at the University of Lüneburg. They bear a
part of the responsibility for the teaching
and learning operation and the work of the
university as a whole and are committed
to innovation and the development of the
University. Through the student body, they
have influence on some steering tasks of the
University. They fulfill the tasks of representing the interests of the student body in
higher education policy, social and cultural
issues.
Students also work in numerous independent
initiatives, which they often reconstruct
according their own interest. Leuphana
supports their commitment in different ways.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE STUDENT BODY
The General Students’ Committee (AStA)
The General Students’ Committee serves as the “executive” of the student body and represents
the interests of students before the Governing Board, the Foundation Council and third parties.
There political, social and cultural interests are defended in line with the needs of students, among
others. Furthermore, AStA offers different services, which are detailed on the homepage of the
Students Committee, as well as various AStA units, which enable voluntary commitment on various
themes such as culture, politics and social affairs.
The Students Parliament (StuPa)
The Students Parliament is the highest decision-making body among student organizations and
is responsible among other things for the student framework policy. It selects the student council
spokesperson and votes on the student body budget. StuPa also sets up various off-shots and
open working groups on different topics, in which all students can participate.
Representatives of discipline-related groups
The representatives of discipline-related groups speak for and in the name of the students in each
faculty or each program of study and stand by the students in issues concerned with recognition
and other problems. Furthermore, they act as contact for the Dean’s Office and organize student
events.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN ACADEMIC SELF-ADMINISTRATION
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN TEACHING
Faculty Councils (FKR)
The Faculty Councils decide on fundamental matters concerned with research and teaching. They
pass resolutions on, in particular the regulations of the faculty, examination regulations. They take
position towards the Governing Board on the introduction, modification and closure of programs. In
the faculties, on the other hand, there are more commissions concerned with budget research and
the appointment of professors and in which the student body is represented.
Quality Circle (QZ)
In the Quality Circle, experts meet to secure and improve the quality of the program of study.
Each Quality Circle convenes annually for each Major (and related Minors) and give students a
low-threshold possibility for feedback for the alignment and implementation of their study program.
Senate
The Senate is the elected College Board for academic self-governance chaired by the President.
The Senate is concerned with matters including examination regulations for inter-faculty degree
courses, the development plan, as well as the constitution of the University. The sessions of the
Senate are open to the university public.
In addition, the Senate may delegate specific matters and tasks to Senate Commissions. These
commissions work out and discuss discipline-related contributions and papers for the Senate
in every field, such as young academic talents, development and financial planning, women’s
promotion and gender equality, Information and Communication Technology, International Affairs,
knowledge transfer and academic training.
Teaching Evaluation (LVE)
To ensure the high quality of teaching, all teaching staff of the University of Lüneburg undertake
to carry out regular instructional event evaluations (LVE). It gives students the opportunity to participate in the development of teaching quality by anonymously filling out teaching/staff questionnaires, and mention what they liked or not-so-well liked in a course. A dialogue between students
and teachers can open doors, so that all learn something and keep it unforgotten.
Examination Boards
Examination Boards of every program of study or for the Complementary Studies deal with all
questions and procedures concerning examinations. The boards treat all exam relevant application
and appeals. They set deadlines and confirm thesis subjects and supervisors.

GETTING THERE
AND FINDING YOUR WAY
Leuphana’s premises are constituted of
three campus sites: Scharnhorststraße,
Volgershall and Rotes Feld campus. The
campus on the Scharnhorststraße is built
in ancient military barracks. When the
barracks were abandoned by the army in
the mid-1990s, Lüneburg University moved
into the now-empty buildings to fill them
with new life and academic spirit.
Since then, the grounds of the Scharnhorststraße campus have undergone many
changes. New buildings were added to the
campus, such as the library, the lecture
halls and the canteen. Their architecture,
comprising large glass panels, plenty of
wood, contrasts with the rather hermetic
look of the barracks’ brick architecture.
Cafés, shops, halls of residence, sports
grounds, an art room and cultural hall all
found their way onto the green campus and
are extensively used by the students.
Since 2007, the New York architect Daniel
Libeskind has been active as an avocational professor of architectural design
at Leuphana. Together with students, he
has designed a model for a Main Building,
supported by the central idea of an ideal
place harmoniously combining studying,
researching and living. The foundation
stone for the new Main Building was laid on
May 8th, 2011.

LÜNEBURG –
LIVE AND STUDY
The city of Lüneburg can look back on a
history of more than a thousand years.
Downtown historic streets are dominated by
baroque facades harboring small and larger
shops, pubs and cafés. Because the city
center is completely pedestrian, the numerous street cafes are well attended throughout the entire year. Lüneburg’s extraordinary
history as salt-producing city, its high
density of historic buildings and its pleasant
atmosphere all attract tourists from around
the world. It also harbors a great variety
of leisure activities. Be it cinema, theater,
literature, music, visual arts or sports – the
city has a lot to offer.
galleries. The student yearning for rest will
find it by immersing into the “Salü” – the
salt thermal spa – hiking on the bucolic
banks of the Illmenau River or in the nearby
Lüneburg Heath.
Leuphana students’ initiatives are continuously expanding their range into the city:
there are innovative meeting places, the
Lunatic Festival on campus or exhibitions in
On the following pages, you will find the
addresses of important contact points and

The Historical Town Hall (Historisches Rathaus)
Lüneburg’s Town Hall is a complex of buildings, whose first element was built in 1230. Over the
centuries it has continued to expand in red brick Gothic style. The baroque façade, which today
defines the image of the Town Hall was completed in 1720. Even today, it is the seat of the Town
Council and of the administrative offices of the Hanse-atic City of Lüneburg.
Heinrich-Heine-Haus
Built in 1565, Heinrich Heine’s parent’s ancient abode is called Heinrich-Heine-Haus. Its top floor
housed his parents for four years (1822-1826), a period during which Heinrich Heine was already a
student and occasionally visited his parents there.
Kalkberg, the “Chalky Mountain”
Towering at 58 meters and the highest natural elevation in the surroundings, the Kalkberg is
situated near St. Michael’s Church and is a natural reserve in the middle of town. Even if, today, it
is only regarded as vantage point: it forms one of the three nucleus of Lüneburg.
