Liebe Kundinnen, Kunden und Leser,
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Customers,
Ein Schwerpunktthema der letzten OptoNews in diesem
Jahr, bilden unsere Aktivitäten auf dem nordamerikanischen Markt für Brillenoptik. OptoTech hat in diesem
Geschäftsbereich in den vergangenen Jahren enorme
Entwicklungsleistungen umgesetzt, um mit an die Spitze
der Optikmaschinenlieferanten für die Brillenglasfertigung zu gelangen. Nun sollen diese Aktivitäten in dem
weltweit wichtigsten Markt für Brillenoptiken deutlich ausgebaut werden. Wir freuen uns auf diese Herausforderung und wollen Sie mit dieser OptoNews an den derzeitigen Aktivitäten auf dem US-Brillenmarkt teilhaben lassen.
Ein zweites Schwerpunktthema ist unsere neue, äußerst
vielseitige NC-Hebelmaschine HM 500 NC, die wir Ihnen
als Produkt-Highlight präsentieren möchten.
The last issue of our OptoNews in 2014 will focus on our
activities on the North American ophthalmics market. In
the last couple of years, OptoTech made enormous developments in this area to finally become one of the first
class suppliers for processing machinery in the ophthalmics market. From now on, these activities shall be distinctively intensified on the most important opthalmics
market. We look forward to these challenges and would
like to let you participate to our activities on the North
American opthalmics market in this issue of our
OptoNews.

In Germantown/Milwaukee, Wisconsin, eröffnet
bald der neuste Unternehmensstandort für den
Geschäftsbereich Brillenoptik der OptoTech
Optikmaschinen GmbH.
The most recent headquarter of OptoTech Optical Machinery Inc. Ophthalmics will open soon
in Germantown/Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Auf insgesamt 1600 m² Gesamtfläche wird zukünftig der Geschäftsbereich Brillenoptik für den
nordamerikanischen Markt sein neues Zuhause in
einem attraktiven, modernen Gebäude finden. Neben Büro- und Konferenzräumen befinden sich in
diesem vollklimatisierten Komplex auch ein Kundenschulungsraum, Vorführräume für Maschinen
und zwei Reinräume für AR- und Hardcoating Maschinen.
Das neue Brillenoptik-Headquarter für Nordamerika
(USA, Kanada und Mexiko) wird zukünftig neben
Vertrieb und Service auch Ersatzteile, Hilfs- und
Betriebsstoffe, Maschinen und Demomöglichkeiten
bieten. Diese Ausstattung, kombiniert mit einer
zentralen Lage, ermöglicht uns eine bestmögliche
Betreuung unserer Brillenoptik-Kunden in Nordamerika.
On a total of 17,000 square feet our new ophthalmic division for the North American market will
have a new home in an attractive, modern building.
Despite of offices and conference rooms, the fully
air-conditioned complex will also have a customer
training room, showrooms for processing machines
and two clean rooms for AR- and Hardcoating machinery.

The new ophthalmic headquarter for North America (USA, Canada and Mexico) will be staffed with
sales and service people, spare parts, consumables, machinery and demo rooms. These amenities, combined with a central location allow us the
best possible service to our ophthalmic customers
in North America.
Our new headquarter will officially open on January
1st 2015.

OptoTech ist stolz mit Jeffrey „Jeff“ Grumbling einen echten
Industrie-Veteranen als COO Brillenoptik für den neuen Standort in Germantown präsentieren zu dürfen. Jeff besitzt über 25
Jahre Erfahrung im Bereich der Optik und hat ein tiefgreifendes
Wissen über die Nordamerikanische Industrie. Unter anderem
war Jeff 13 Jahre lang für die Brillenglasfertigung von WalMart
zuständig, 7 Jahre davon als technischer Leiter. Zuletzt war Jeff
als technischer Leiter bei Carl Zeiss Vision beschäftigt und dort
für die Führung der Hälfte der US-Amerikanischen Brillenlabore
verantwortlich.
Wir heißen Jeff herzlich Willkommen bei OptoTech und wünschen ihm das Beste für einen Guten Start am neuen Standort
in Germantown.
OptoTech is proud to announce Jeffrey “Jeff” Grumbling as
COO Ophthalmics for our new headquarter in Germantown. Jeff
has more than 25 years of optical experience as well as a
strong knowledge of the industry. After starting his career with
Pearle Vision, he spent 13 years with Wal-Mart in both the retail
optical and lab division, the last seven of which he served as
director of operations. Most recently, Jeff was director of operations for Carl Zeiss Vision and was responsible for half the company’s U.S. lab division.

Mit dem ehemaligen Geschäftsführer von LOH Optical Machinery, Matthias „Matt“ Schmidt, wurde ein bekannter Kopf der
optischen Industrie ins Boot geholt, der den Amerikanischen
Markt kennt wie kaum ein Zweiter.
Er ist am neuen US-Standort als Consultant mit der Gründung,
Personalbesetzung und dem Vertriebsaufbau betraut worden.
Matt Schmidt sagt zu seinem Engagement bei OptoTech: „Nach
mehr als 10 Jahren im Bereich der Optikbearbeitungsmaschinen, anschließenden Tätigkeiten als COO HOYA Vision NA und
danach als Teilhaber und Gründer von Perfect Optics Lab in
San Diego, weiß ich, dass Kundenservice und Maschinenlaufzeiten zu den Schlüsselelementen von Lieferanten-KundenBeziehungen gehören und das technische Innovationen einer
eingehenden Prüfung unter realen Produktionsbedingungen
beim Kunden bedürfen. Um diesen Anforderungen gerecht zu
werden, werden in Germantown zukünftig Kundenschulungen
durchgeführt, Maschinenvorführungen für Oberflächenbearbeitungsmaschinen stattfinden und darüber hinaus Beschichtungsanlagen (AR- und Harcoating) in eigenen Reinräumen präsentiert werden.“
Matt Schmidt, an industry veteran and former President of LOH
Optical Machinery has been retained as Consultant.
He will assist in the establishment, staffing and sales of the new
US-headquarter. Matt states: “Working in the optical machinery
industry for more than 10 years and then becoming my own
customer as COO for HOYA Vision NA and later as Co Owner
and founder of the Perfect Optics Lab in San Diego CA I realized that customer support, service and machine uptime are the
key elements of an enduring customer vendor relationship and
that technical innovation is only useful if it has proven itself in a
true customer manufacturing environment. In that sense OptoTech’s Germantown Customer Support Center will house a
customer training facility, machine demo rooms for surfacing
technology and a clean room environment for AR and Hard
Coating equipment.“

Service Officer Ophthalmics: Richard Gallant
Richard Gallant, mit 23 Jahren Erfahrung in der optischen Industrie, ist unser neuer Serviceleiter Brillenoptik am Standort
Germantown.
Seine Karriere begann er 1993 bei LensCrafters, für die er 9
Jahre im Bereich Lab-Management tätig war und hier speziell
mit der Ausbildung der Mitarbeiter betraut war. Anschließend
war er bei Hoya Lens of America als Fertigungsleiter angestellt
und hatte hier die Aufsicht über alle Produktionsschritte: Von
der Oberflächenbearbeitung über die Tauchlackierung, ARBeschichtung bis zur Randbearbeitung.
Zuletzt war er bei Coburn Technologies als Verfahrenstechniker
im Bereich Service tätig. Er war verantwortlich für die Aufstellung der Maschinen und die Kundenschulung.
Wir heißen Richard herzlich Willkommen bei OptoTech und
wünschen ihm einen guten Start!
Richard Gallant, having 23 years of experience in the optical
industry, is our new Service Officer Ophthalmics in Germantown.
He started with LensCrafters in 1992 and worked for them for 9
years in Lab Management capacity and was responsible for
quality training of associates. After that he worked for Hoya
Lens of America, became Production Manager overseeing all
aspects of production and becoming proficient in Surfacing, Dip
Coating, AR- and Edging processes.
In the next step, he worked for Coburn Technologies as Application Engineer in Service. He was responsible for the installation, setup, and training on Coburn freeform systems.

Scott Bird ist ein sehr erfahrener Techniker im Bereich der Herstellung von Brillengläsern. Vor seiner Anstellung bei OptoTech
arbeitete er zunächst 3 Jahre als Betriebsleiter der Optikerkette
Peerless Optical in Los Angeles. Hier war er unter anderem
verantwortlich für die Schulung des Laborpersonals an den
Bearbeitungsmaschinen, Wartung der Maschinen und Produktionsoptimierung. Anschließend war er 6 Jahre Lang bei Carl
Zeiss Vision Inc. am Standort Hebron, KY als FreiformTechniker angestellt. Dort war er verantwortlich für die globale
Installation
und
Schulung
der
gesamten
FreiformBearbeitungstechnologie (Oberflächenbearbeitung, Blocker und
Laser-Graviersysteme). Zu seinen Aufgaben zählten das Aufstellen und Testen der Maschinen, die Durchführung von Schulungen sowie technologische und prozesstechnische Unterstützung in der Freiformfertigung.
Wir heißen Scott herzlich Willkommen bei OptoTech wünschen
ihm einen erfolgreichen Start in Germantown.
Scott Bird is a very experienced engineer in the field of ophthalmic lens production. He spent 3 years as general manager
working for Peerless Optical in Los Angeles, CA. He was
responsible for an independently owned optical lab and five
store optical chain. Duties included training of lab personnel on
all equipment, maintaining optical machinery, and improving
upon production levels. Afterwards he was employed for 6 years
at Carl Zeiss Vision Inc. Hebron, KY as freeform implementation
engineer. He was responsible for global implementation and
training in all aspects of optical freeform / digital lens processes,
using digital surfacing equipment, blockers, and laser engraving
machinery. His duties included: Installing, testing, training, and
providing technical, process, and mechanical support in the
production of freeform optical processes.
We would like to welcome Scott at OptoTech and wish him a

Die Herstellung von Zylinderlinsen stellt ein Spezialgebiet der
Optikfertigung dar, dass jedoch über viele Jahre hinweg nicht
optimiert wurde. Diese Tatsache hat OptoTech zum Anlass
genommen, eine ganze Reihe von Spezialmaschinen für diese
Aufgabenstellung zu entwickeln. Heute bieten wir Maschinen
an, die in der Lage sind, Zylinderlinsen bis zu einer Maximallänge von 1,50 Metern zu fertigen.
Am Beispiel der HM 500 NC möchten wir Ihnen zeigen, dass
auch konventionelle Maschinen durch innovative Konzepte als
„High-End-Alleskönner“ verwendet werden können.
Processing of cylinder lenses is a very special subject in the
field of precision optics, that however hasn’t been optimized for
many years. This fact made OptoTech develop a series of special machinery for processing high quality cylinder lenses. Today, we are offering machines that are able to process cylinder
lenses up to a maximum length of 1.50 meters.
We would like to highlight our new HM 500 NC as an example
for a conventional machine that can be combined with innovative technologies to become a true “All-rounder”.

Single Surfaces
Durch eine sehr einfache Umrüstung und das Abrufen von speziellen NC-Programmen kann die HM 500 NC hochwertig Einzelflächen bis zu ø 400 mm polieren. Hierbei kann sie als
Schnellpoliermaschine mit PU-Folie oder als High-End Maschine mit Pech- oder Wachswerkzeugen genutzt werden.
Die spezielle Softwareunterstützung ermöglicht es, Qualitäten
im λ/20 Bereich zu fertigen.
Due to a very simple modification and special NC-programs, the
HM 500 NC is able to polish high-quality single surfaces up to
ø 400 mm. Equipped with PU-foil, the machine can be used as
a fast polishing machine or equipped with pitch or wax tools as
a true high-end polishing machine.
The special software allows to process surface qualities in the
range of λ/20.

easy, we developed the the OptoTech product finder.

The product finder is a very useful and easy to handle tool that
essentially facilitates to find the
relevant machinery and equipment for your individual application.
Ein Beispiel: Sie sind im Bereich
Feinoptik auf der Suche nach
einer Maschine, die in der Lage
ist, Ihnen sowohl Sphären als
auch Asphären in einem Durchmesserbereich bis 150 mm zu
schleifen. Um die hierfür relevanten Maschinen zu finden, geben
Sie
im
Produkfinder
bei
„Bearbeitungsart“ „Schleifen“ an,
setzen Sie einfach unter Bauteil
die Haken bei „Sphären“ und
„Asphären“ und definieren anhand der Schieberegler den gewünschten Durchmesserbereich.
Sind die Filter gesetzt, zeigt
Ihnen der Produktfinder automatisch die für Ihren Anwendungsfall in Frage kommenden Maschinentypen an. In dem gezeigten
Beispiel wurde so die Anzahl der
in Frage kommenden Maschinen
auf 4 Maschinentypen reduziert.

as well as aspherical optics up to

for the filter option “Processing
Type”, set the checkmarks
“Spheres” and “Aspheres” for
“Work Piece” and define the
diameter range by setting the
minimum and maximum diameter
for the filter option “Diameter”.
When these filters are set, the
productfinder
automatically
shows the machines matching
your individual requirements. In
our example the product finder
reduced the machines fitting
