Portsmouth, founded on the Point by Jean de Gisors in 1180, grew quickly and
soon had its own church. St Thomas’ now one of Portsmouth’s two cathedrals,
can be seen on your extreme right of your view with the distinctive white tower.

In the distance, just to the right of the large black tower block is a white clock
tower—this is Portsmouth Guildhall. It was severely damaged in the Blitz but
rebuilt in 1950. On the other side of the black tower are the brick towers of St
John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, with its circular rose window.

On the far shore of Portsmouth Harbour on the right of the view is Portsdown Hill.
At the top of it lies Fort Nelson, one of a line of fortifications. Today it houses the
Royal Armouries national artillery collection.

Some of the most dramatic transformations in Portsmouth have taken place in the
area immediately below. The expanse of grey roofs on the left is Gunwharf Quays
shopping centre, this and the residential developments, waterside bars have
replaced the naval ordnance yard HMS Vernon which once occupied the site.

The Tower is founded on 84 piles, the longest of which runs 50 metres into the ground
The concrete used to build the Spinnaker Tower would fill five and a half
Olympic-sized swimming pools.
There are three view decks to visit, with the internal lift accessing decks 1 & 2 , view deck
3 is reached by climbing 30 stairs.

In front of you is the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, beyond that is a stretch of water
known as The Solent and in the distance is the Isle of Wight. The harbour entrance is
only 200 metres wide, the narrow entrance has historically made it easy to defend.
The western view overlooks the expanse of Portsmouth Harbour. Prominent on this
shoreline towards the right of your view is the walls of Porchester Castle,
constructed 1700 years ago by the Romans.
Direkt vor Ihnen liegt die Einfahrt zum Hafen von Portsmouth. Die dahinter liegende

On the left hand side of the harbour entrance lies a small peninsula know as the Point.
On the far shore of the Point overlooking the harbour entrance is a low circular grey
tower known as the Round Tower, it was built in 1415.
Closer to the Spinnaker Tower, in the foreground, is Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
and Naval Base, the most important base of the Royal Navy for centuries. In the
middle of the dockyard is a large, wooden three-masted sailing ship, smartly
decked out in orange and black stripes, this is the famous HMS Victory. The closer
ship is HMS Warrior the first iron-hulled warship.

Further along this shore is the Square Tower built by Henry VIII in 1494 as the
residence for the military governor of Portsmouth. Together with the Round Tower,
these acted as part of the fortification against the invasion of Portsmouth

Even further along the shore, is an expanse of grass bordering the coast and a small
white lighthouse, which is still in use today. This was a later addition to Southsea
Castle. The castle was built in 1544, it was here that Henry VIII watched the sinking of
his flagship the Mary Rose.

In the open stretch of water beyond the Point are three small round structures. They
are three of the four sea forts commissioned in the mid 19th century. From the left to
right they are Horsesand Fort, Spitbank Fort and Nomansland Fort. A fourth,
St Helens, lies a mile north east of Bembridge Harbour on the Isle of Wight.

Streifen, ein großer, hölzerner Dreimaster zu sehen: die berühmte HMS Victory.

The Mary Rose is the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world
and she can be seen inside the white roof building inside the Historic Dockyards.

Today, Portsmouth remains a fully functional naval base, employing over 17,000
staff. It is home to the Navy’s aircraft carriers, and many other naval ships.
