Mariazellerbahn
En route to the peak of the Ötscher massif (alt: 1,893m) pastures, gorges and waterfalls will delight you. At the top, uninterrupted vistas of impenetrable forests, Alpine meadows and flowerfilled landscapes await. The Vordere Tormäuer and Hintere Tormäuer gorges – carved out of the rock by the Erlauf river – are a sight to behold. It’s also easy to see why the Ötscherbachgräben is sometimes referred to as Austria’s Grand Canyon. Lakes and waterfalls. Popular destinations for hikers and daytrippers include the marked paths on the romantic Hochbärneck meadowland, the Erlaufsee lake and the Erlaufstausee reservoir, as well as the Mirafall, Trefflingfall, Lassingfall and Schleierfall waterfalls. Full of stalactites and stalagmites, the Ötscher Tropfsteinhöhle caves are full of mystery. Bizarre natural phenomena line the hiking trails, and with any luck you might even find traces of an Ötscher bear somewhere along the way. From its beginnings just south of St. Pölten, the Pielachtal valley stretches across gently rolling hills, up into the Mostviertel Alps and onto the Naturpark Ötscher-Tormäuer. The picturesque Pielach is one of the most unspoiled river landscapes in the whole of Austria. “Pielachtal olives” The scarlet dirndl fruits grow on the southern slopes of the valley on fruit bushes which bathe the area in a sea of yellow blossoms in March. The sweet-and-sour dirndls are used in countless delicious local specialities: juices, jams, schnapps, chocolate, cakes and mouthwatering Pielachtal olives. The stones are also used to make dirndl necklaces and warming dirndl stone cushions.
