Die legendäre Rockoper „Tommy“ – endlich wieder in Frankfurt!
Von November bis Februar rockt die Musik von The Who das English Theatre
Das britische Ensemble der Rockoper „Tommy“ kommt frisch und energiegeladen
aus London, dem Geburtsort der britischen Kultband „The Who“.
Im Flower-Powerjahr 1969 veröffentlichten „The Who“ mit ihrem Konzeptalbum
„Tommy“ einen Meilenstein in der Musikgeschichte. Das Album wurde 1998 in die
„Grammy Hall of Fame“ mit über 20 Millionen verkauften CDs aufgenommen. Pete
Townshend, Gitarrist und kreativer Kopf der Gruppe, erfand die Geschichte des
Tommy Walker.
Als Kind sieht Tommy Walker einen Mord mit an – mit verheerenden
Auswirkungen. Durch dieses Trauma wird Tommy blind, taub und stumm.
Er wird von vermeintlichen Freunden und sogar seiner Familie über Jahre
misshandelt. Schließlich wird Tommy wie durch ein Wunder zum „Pinball
Wizard“ (Flipperkönig) und versammelt bald als Heilsbringer eine große
Anhängerschaft um sich. Doch auch als Star nutzt man ihn aus. Als er das
erkennt, beschließt er, alles radikal zu ändern...
Das Album von „The Who“ war so erfolgreich, dass es 1975 unter der Regie von
keinem geringeren als dem Starregisseur Ken Russel verfilmt wurde. Der Film
versammelt Showbiz-Giganten wie Tina Turner (Acid Queen), Eric Clapton, Jack
Nicholson und Elton John (2 Oscar Nominierungen).
Die Geschichte von Tommy hat unbändiges Potential – 1993 steckten Pete
Townshend und Des McAnuff ihre kreativen Köpfe zusammen und schrieben die
Rockoper Tommy, die im selben Jahr am Broadway uraufgeführt wurde. Insgesamt
spielte das Stück 889 Aufführungen am Broadway und gewann 5 Tony Awards
sowie einen Lawrence-Olivier-Award.
Nach 16 Jahren produziert das English Theatre Frankfurt das Erfolgsmusical endlich
für die Rhein-Main-Region. Unter der Regie von Ryan McBryde (Hair, The Full
Monty, Spring Awakening) probte ein Ensemble professioneller Musicaldarsteller ab
Anfang Oktober in London. Seit dem 31. Oktober 2011 sind sie in Frankfurt, wo sie
ab dem 12. November bis Februar 2012 die Bühne rocken!
Director´s notes – by Ryan McBryde:
ACT I – London is bombed. A child is conceived. The child witnesses his father
murder his mother’s lover. He is traumatised by the event. Becomes death, dumb
and blind. He is completely isolated – trapped in his own head. His guilt-ridden
parents turn to MEDICINE, RELIGION, PSYCHIATRY, DRUGS to save him but all of
them fail to cure him.
I think that Tommy is a metaphor for post-war Britain. Like Tommy, Britain was
deaf, dumb and blind after being traumatised by the war. Have we ever recovered
from the war? Our cities razed to the ground. Thousands of our civilians slaughtered.
And even though we won the war we lost everything – our economy, our empire, our
society. Everyone looks at the pre-war years as the golden years, the age of
innocence... In the aftermath of World War II we closed in on ourselves, became
more insular, more isolated ... we turned to medicine, religion, psychiatry and drugs
but ultimately they failed us. Like Tommy we plugged ourselves into machines, TV,
Xbox, Wii to feel something, to get a sensation from something...
Act I is split between Tommy’s parents trying to cure their son and Tommy’s older
self trying to help Tommy through his trauma.
When we dip into Tommy’s minds we need to see the War, the effects of the Blitz on
London, we need to see the iconography from the times fucked up and distorted and
we need to see him wrestling with his senses – his ears, eyes and mouth: deaf, blind
and dumb. What does Tommy’s alternative reality look like?
In MEDICINE we need a sequence where the poor boy’s senses are medically tested.
I see him at the mercy of doctors and machines.
In RELIGION I see the Vicar and his congregation becoming ecstatic in their attempts
to heal the sick child and then, having failed to cure him, they reject him because he
is a reminder/symbol of their spiritual barrenness.
In PSYCHIATRY Tommy should be wired in – we need to go into his mind again but
with the doctors shocking him with electricity, invading. MEDICINE is about the
Physical Body and PSYCHIATRY is about the Mental / Inner.
ACT II – In ACID QUEEN – Tommy should experience’s a trip. It should be quite
fucked up. During this trip though we need to see Tommy getting closer to the
surface of reality.
Got to turn Tommy into a RELIGION with all the relevant iconography. The masses
want answers and ERNIE and KEVIN exploit TOMMY by turning him into a cult
leader. Tommy wants to help – is unaware he is being exploited by his relatives and
also his new disciples
He gets caught up in the religious fever, becomes the Lord Of The Dance. Its only
when Sally is injured that he sees his ‘disciples’ for what they are. They’re lost lonely
beings who desperately want something to believe in. He says STOP. They won’t. So
he offers them a reality that can only reject – a puritan lifestyle that requires them
blocking their senses and tying themselves to the machine. They reject him. Tommy
returns home to the fucked up family he left behind – maybe they can start again?
We need to exploit cult British iconography I think – Does Tommy don a Union Jack
suit once he becomes the Cult Leader for instance?
I’ve added the song YOUNG MAN BLUES to capture that sense of 60’s rebellion
where the younger generation said fuck this. The war fucked us up so we’re going to
embrace peace and love and pretend it never happened.
People follow TOMMY because they want answers. They’re living in the wasteland of
post war Europe. What should they believe in? Give us something to belong to!
Tommy is momentarily the answer.

in Grease (Piccadilly Theatre), Dorcus in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (UK No.1
Tour and Haymarket Theatre), Nancy in Jekyll and Hyde (UK No.1 Tour), Lead
Female Vocalist in Spirit Of broadway (China Tour). Fernsehauftritte u.a.
in: Anita West Side Story in Howard Goodall’s 20th Century Greats. Rizzo in Grease
The School Musical, als "Backing singer" für die internationale Künstlerin Enya bei
Shows wie This Morning und Children In Need.
Mark Powell (Mr. Walker)
Die Leidenschaft für die Schauspielerei entdeckte Mark bereits
in jungen Jahren in der National Youth Theatre School. Seine
Schauspielausbildung schloss er an der Londoner Mountview Academy of Theatre
Arts ab. Anschließend war Mark in Zorro im Garrick Theatre zu sehen. Er übernahm
nicht nur die Rolle des Private Ramirez, sondern auch die des Zorro/Diego und
Ramon. Sein West End Debüt machte er in dem Stück Whistle down the Wind
(Aldmych). Als zweite Besetzung in der Rolle des Enjolras in Les Miserables (Palace)
sammelte er weitere Erfahrung auf der Theaterbühne. In folgenden Rollen war
Mark zu sehen: Phoebus in Notre Dame de Paris (Dominion), Sonny in Grease
(Victoria Palace, Tour durch Japan) und andere. Tourneen durch Großbritannien, in
denen Mark mitspielte, waren zum Beispiel:
Jekyll and Hyde, Sunset Boulvard, Guards! Guards!; Rolf in The Sound of
Music (BAC); Adam in Schwartz It All About (Finborough); and the world Premier
of Imagine This (Theatre Royal Plymouth). In der Spielzeit 2009/10 war Mark am
English Theatre Frankfurt in der Titelrolle des Musicals The Full Monty zu sehen.
Letztes Jahr kehrte er mit dem Europa-Tournee-Musical Evita auch nach Frankfurt in die Alte Oper- zurück.
Max Schwartzkopff (Young Tommy)
Max hat schon Theatererfahrungen in der Grundschule in der
dortigen Theater-AG gesammelt. Er besucht zur Zeit die
sechste Klasse des Lessing Gymnasiums in Frankfurt.
Ryan McBryde (Regisseur)
Ryan wurde in Leeds geboren, studierte in Liverpool und
lebt nun mit seiner Familie in London. Jüngste Arbeiten
sind: The Royal Shakespeare Company's 50th Anniversary
Musical Gala, Hamlet! The Musical am The Royal and
Derngate, Northampton und Richmond Theatre, welches
den Preis: "WhatsOnStage Theatregoers' Choice Award"
gewonnen hat; ferner ein Revival von On The 20th
Century am Union Theatre, London; am English Theatre
Frankfurt die Deutschlandpremieren von Spring Awakening
und The Full Monty; in England die Weltpremiere von A Day at the
Racists (Finborough Theatre / Barking Broadway); die Weltpremiere von Terje
Vigen at the Royal Concert Hall, Oslo / Arts Theatre, London. Und auch im
Sprechtheater inszenierte Ryan McBryde am English Theatre Frankfurt bereits Terry
Johnson’s Hysteria, Ira Levin’s Deathtrap und die Bühnenversion nach D.H.
Lawrence The Fox.
Nach TOMMY wird Ryan am Alten Schauspielhaus Stuttgart Arthur Millers großen
Klassiker Hexenjagd inszenieren.
