Ertragt einer den andern in der Liebe und seid darauf bedacht, zu
wahren die Einigkeit im Geist durch das Band des Friedens!

An einem Fluß wohnten zwei Bauern, der eine am rechten, der andere
am linken Ufer. Die Bauern waren so neidisch aufeinander. Wenn sie
morgens pflügten, schimpfte der eine, weil sein Feld im Schatten lag,
das des Nachbarn aber in der Sonne. Und wenn sie abends Holz
hackten, schimpfte der andere, weil sein Haus jetzt im Schatten, das
des Nachbarn aber in der Sonne lag. Auch die Frauen der Bauern
waren unzufrieden, und eines Morgens, als die eine wäsche aufhing,
schrie sie ein böses Wort ans linke Ufer hinüber, und als sie abends

Wäsche abnahm, gab die andere das böse Wort ans rechte Ufer
zurück.
Nur mittags, wenn die Sonne hoch am Himmel stand, herrschten Ruhe
und Frieden, weil die Bauern mit ihren Frauen unter den Apfelbäumen
lagen und schnarchten.
Die beiden Kinder der Bauern aber saßen in der Mittagszeit am
Wasser und langweilten sich. Doch eines schönen Tages war der
Wasserspiegel gesunken, und aus dem Wasser ragten so viele große
Steine, daß die kinder hinüberhüpfen konnten. Sie trafen in der Mitte
zusammen. Sie setzten sich auf einen großen Stein und fingen an,
sich Geschichten zu erzählen, und sie hüpften nun jeden Mittag über
die Steine, um sich in der Mitte zu treffen.
Die Eltern aber wunderten sich, woher ihre kinder plötzlich Dinge
wußten, von denen sie selbst noch nie gehört hatten. Doch eines
Tages, nach einem langen Regen, hörten die Kinder auf, Geschichten
zu erzählen, zu lachen, zu singen. Das Wasser im Fluß war wieder
angestiegen und die Kinderbrücke verschwunden. Da erfuhren die
Eltern endlich das Mittagsgeheimnis ihrer kinder, und sie fingen an
nachzudenken...
Und als sie lange genug nachgedacht hatten, beschlossen sie,
zusammen mit ihren Kindern aus den übriggebliebenen Steinen eine
Brücke zu bauen.

Now it happened at midnight that the man was startled, and
turned himself,- and there, a woman was lying at his feet.

Most crimes take place in the dark. In the dark of the night a thief slips into
a home to steal. In dimly lit parking garages assailants lurk about for their
next victims. In the blackness of alleys gang members hatch their plans...
John 3 verse 19 says: “Depraved people love the darkness because it hides
their wicked deeds.” And here was a perfect opportunity - a man alone with
a woman in the dark! No one would have noticed; it was midnight and
everyone was sound asleep. Nor probably would they have cared, had they
taken note. Ruth was a foreigner and, worse yet, a Moabitess. Since the
days of Moses when Moabites refused to allow passage through their land
and even hired Balaam to curse the Israelites, no love existed between
these two nations. Furthermore, Boaz was wealthy, and everyone knows
that the rich take what they want. But Boaz was a man of honor and
integrity - even in the dark.
God expects you and me to behave in the dark the same as we do in the
light. It makes no difference if no one is watching. It doesn't even matter
that our misdeeds will never be discovered. There is still one who knows
and cares. The psalmist reminds us, "the darkness and the light are both
alike to God" (Ps. 139:12). The darkness is not the time to take a chance;
it's the time to show your character and let your light shine.
Make sure God can trust you in the dark and when you think no one can
see. Ask Him to give you the consistency of character that is unaffected by
your circumstances. Be as faithful to the Lord when your actions are hidden
as when they're out in the open. Someday, you'll be glad you did.
What a person is in the dark is what a person truly is.

Fröhlicher Mittwoch
Die Senioren treffen sich am Mittwoch 12 August 10:00 Uhr bei der Bible
Society in Durban um den neuen Leiter Clive van Rooyen kennen zu lernen. Er
wird uns auch ein DVD zeigen.
Am Samstag 29 August 2-2:30 pm ist Frauen Tag bei der Lutherkirche. Frauen
von verschiedenen Gemeinden treffen sich für Gesseligkeit, singen und die Gast
Sprächerin wird Pastor Heather Thompson von der Congregational Church sein.
Die Senioren treffen sich am Mittwoch 9 September um 10 Uhr bei der Westville
Luther Kirche.

speaker, Pastor Heather Thompson from the Congregational Church.

August POST September 15
Chaos in Parliament. The leaders are embarrassing the nation. That is
what happens when people choose to ignore rules and procedures.
Sadly it is happening on all levels. Even the president and cabinet
ministers seem to take the liberty to ignore the constitution or a court
ruling that they don’t like. The result is chaos.
Ironically, all too often such chaos can be found in the Church, where
on all levels Christians work against each other, or congregants in a
congregation create chaos and disruption.
“Diversity in Unity” - this is the theme of our Synod in October. Not
“Unity in Diversity” The foundation on which the Church is built is not
diversity, which we try to unify, but the unity from which diversity
grows.
What is the basis of our Unity that binds us all together?
In John 15,16ff we read Jesus saying: “You did not choose me, but I
chose you and appointed you that you may go and bear fruit!”
The basis of our unity, the basis of the Church, is that Christ chose us,
and not that I chose Christ! We are Christians by His choice, not by our
own!
One of the recognised weaknesses of our parliamentary system is that
the delegates are not accountable to the voters but to the party.
To whom are we as Christians accountable? To the congregation? The
Church? In the first instance we are accountable to the one who chose,
elected us, Jesus Christ! The root of our Unity is not that I chose
Christ, but that he chose me, and you, and him, and her, and ..., and....
I need to respect His choice, and with that the constitution that HE
gave us. We find it in John 15, 12: “My command is this: Love each
other as I have loved you”. We cannot and shall not choose to ignore
this constitution when it does not suit us. For then we are just as much
an embarrassment to His Church as some of our leaders are to our
nation.

So, before we can speak about diversity, we need to remind ourselves
where our unity lies! Then the diversity will not pull us apart, but can
become a creative energy that helps the Church to grow and develop
to the glory of the Lord!

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH
1. On 20 May 2015 Margret Pape passed away aged 88. She was the
widow of Pastor Hinrich Pape, the first dean of the Northern Circuit of
ELCSA (NT). The couple came to South Africa in 1954, sent by the
Hermannsburg Mission. Their first congregation was Edlomodlomo.
After that they served in Piet Retief, and then till retirement in
Kroondal. In their retirement they lived in Pretoria.
On 27 May 2015 Myriam Müller passed away, aged 91. She was the
widow of Pastor Reinhard Müller. Reinhard Müller was ordained after
studying for the ministry as he was approaching retirement age. This
brave step into the ministry took the couple to Pietersburg/Polokwane,
where they served the Northern Parish until the second retirement.
We thank God for the lives of these women, and the role that they
played in the ministry of the Church. May God bless their families and
comfort them.
On 18 June Bishop em. Richard Schiele passed away, aged 84.
Having grown up on a mission station in Swaziland, he too became a
missionary, trained by the Berlin Mission society. They served various
parishes, and he was the founder bishop of the ELCSA Eastern
Diocese. After his retirement he was very active in Pietermaritzburg in
both ELCSA and ELCSA (NT) congregations and was a real bridge
builder between cultures and churches. The last years the couple were
active members of the Kempton Park congregation, where he
continued playing his violin in the “Bells&Whistles” worship team, until
his health no longer allowed it.

We thank God for this humble, serving man - the bishop who helped
carrying chairs and wiping tables.
May God comfort Leonore and the family.
2. The Cape Synod met from 29-31 May in King Williamstown.
Regarding a merger with ELCSA (NT) the following motion was
adopted by the synod:
“We agree in principle to a merger based on a common underlying
Christian calling and tradition.
Synod tasks Church Council to draw up a draft constitution and orders
to be agreed upon in 2016 by the Church Councils of the ELCSA Cape
and ELCSA (NT).
From 2016 to the 2017 synod, Church Council is to consult widely with
the congregations on the principles and constitution. Synods of both
Churches, in 2017 to vote on the principles.
In 2019 the Churches are to agree on a final constitution and orders,
leading to respective dissolution processes.”
The same motion will be put forward at our synod in October. During
the synod preparation meetings and via correspondence and input
sessions the congregations will be informed about the details so far.
3. ELCSA (NT) Synod Preparation meetings serve the following
purposes: for the delegates it is a crucial preparation session, where
questions can be clarified, suggestions made, and detailed information
is given. This process leads to a much more efficient synod meeting.
For congregational councils and treasurers it offers the opportunity to
interact with the treasurer of the Church and president of Synod, and
also still to make suggestions for changes or adaptations to laws and
proposals.
Other members of congregations are welcome, and even encouraged,
to attend this meeting, to get an insight of what is going to happen and
be discussed at synod. The invitations to these meetings will be sent
out by the respective deans.

4. In May Bishop Müller attended the Lutheran Council of Africa

Chaos im Parlament. Das Ganze ist eine Blamage für´s Volk. So ein
Benehmen gehört sich nicht! Das kommt davon, wenn man Regeln
und Ordnungen ignoriert. Leider passiert das auf allen Ebenen.
Wenn sogar die Obersten des Volkes - Präsident und Minister, nach
Gutdünken die Verfassung oder Gerichtssprüche ignorieren, kann
es nur zu Chaos führen. Leider ist es bei Kirche nicht unbedingt
besser. Auf allen Ebenen kann man erleben, wie Christen sich
gegenseitig bekämpfen, boykottieren oder das Leben schwer
machen. Denominationen beschimpfen sich manchmal wie
Oppositionsparteien, und sogar innerhalb von Gemeinden kann es
Spannungen und Auftreten geben, die an das Parlament erinnern!
“Vielfalt in Einheit” lautet das Thema unserer Synode im Oktober.
Nicht: “Einheit in Vielfalt” Wir versuchen nicht, Einheit in der Vielfalt
zu schaffen, sondern die Grundlage der Kirche ist die Einheit.
Worauf beruht die Einheit der Kirche? In Johannes 15,16 hören wir
Jesus sagen: “Nicht ihr habt mich erwählt, sondern ich habe euch
erwählt und bestimmt, dass ihr hingeht und Frucht bringt” Darauf
beruht unsere Einheit: Dass Christus uns erwählt hat! Unser
Parlamentssystem hat eine große Schwäche: Die Wähler wählen

zwar die Partei, aber nicht die Abgeordneten. Dadurch brauchen die
Abgeordneten den Wählern auch keine Rechenschaft geben. Wem
geben wir Christen Rechenschaft? Unserer Gemeinde? Unserer
Kirche? An erster Stelle dem, der uns gewählt, erwählt hat: Jesus
Christus! Wenn wir dieses aus dem Auge verlieren, verlieren wir das
Fundament das uns vereint. Dann entsteht ein Chaos das Kirchen
und Gemeinden zerstören kann. Die Frage ist nicht, ob ich den
Bruder oder die Schwester leiden kann, sondern ob ich respektiere,
dass mein Herr sie ausgesucht, erwählt hat! Bin ich bereit auf seine
“Verfassung” zu hören und mich von ihr bestimmen zu lassen? Wir
finden sie in Johannes 15,12: “Das ist mein Gebot, dass ihr euch
untereinander liebt, wie ich euch liebe”. Wir können nicht nach
Willkür entscheiden wann und ob wir seine Verfassung ernstnehmen
wollen. Dann werden wir eine Blamage für seine Kirche, machen
seine Kirche zum Spott. Bevor wir in der nächsten Bischofspost über
die Vielfalt der Kirche nachdenken, ist es unbedingt notwendig, zu
zeigen, worin unsere Einheit begründet ist. Dann zerreißt uns die
Vielfalt nicht, sondern wird eine kreative Kraft! Euer Miterwählter in

Nachrichten aus der Kirche
1. Am 20. Mai 2015 verstarb Margret Pape im Alter von 88. Sie war
die Witwe von Pastor Hinrich Pape, dem ersten Dekan des
Norddekanats der ELKSA(NT). In 1954 kam das Ehepaar von der
Hermannsburger Mission
entsandt, nach Südafrika. Der Dienst
begann in Edlomodlomo. Danach waren sie in Piet Retief, und bis zur
Pensionierung in Kroondal. Den Ruhestand verlebten sie in Pretoria.
Am 27. Mai 2015 verstarb Myriam Müller im Alter von 91 Jahren. Sie
war die Witwe von Pastor Reinhard Müller. Reinhard Müller studierte

erst kurz vor dem Ruhestand Theologie und wurde nach seinem
Ruhestand ordiniert. Das Ehepaar wagte den mutigen Schritt in den
Pfarrdienst. Bis zum zweiten Ruhestand waren sie im Pfarramt in
Pietersburg/Polokwane und versorgten den Nordverband. Den
Ruhestand verbrachten sie in Johannesburg.
Wir danken Gott für diese Frauen, die im Dienst der Kirche eine
wichtige Rolle gespielt haben. Möge der Herr die Angehörigen trösten
und segnen!
Am 18. Juni verstarb Bischof em. Richard Schiele im Alter von 84. Er
wuchs auf einer Missionsstation in Swaziland auf, und wurde dann
selbst von der Berliner Mission ausgebildet und nach Südafrika
entsandt. Hier diente er an verschiedenen Stellen, bevor der Weg die
Familie zurück nach Swaziland führte. Dort wurde er der erste Bischof
der neuen ELCSA Eastern Diocese. Nach seinem Ruhestand kam das
Ehepaar nach Pietermaritzburg, wo er sowohl in
ELCSA and
ELKSA(NT) Gemeinden aktiv war. Immer wieder war er Brückenbauer
zwischen Kirchen und Kulturen. Später zogen sie nach Kempton Park
und waren dort auch aktiv in der Gemeinde. Bis die Gesundheit es
nicht mehr zuließ, spielte Richard noch die Geige im “Bells&Whistles”
Worship Team.
Wir danken Gott für diesen demütigen, beispielhaften Menschen, der
“Bischof der Stühle trägt” und sich selbst nie zu schade war, auch beim
Aufräumen kräftig mit anzupacken.
Möge Gott Leonore und die Familie trösten und stärken!
2. Die Synode der Kapkirche fand vom 29.-31. Mai in King
Williamstown statt. Folgendes wurde im Blick auf die Vereinigung mit
der ELKSA (NT) beschlossen:
“Auf Grund des gemeinsamen Christlichen Rufs und der gemeinsamen
Tradition stimmen wir dem Prinzip einer Vereinigung zu.
Die Synode beauftragt die Kirchenleitung, eine Verfassung und
Ordnungen zu erstellen, die in 2016 durch die Kirchenleitungen der
ELKSA KAP und ELKSA (NT) abgestimmt werden sollen.
In 2016 bis zur 2017 Synode soll die Kirchenleitung intensiv mit den
Gemeinden über das Prinzip und die Verfassung ins Gespräch
kommen.

In 2017 sollen die Synoden der beiden Kirchen über das Prinzip
abstimmen. In 2019 sollen die Kirchen sich über die endgültige
Verfassung und Ordnungen einigen, was zur Auflösung der jeweiligen
Kirchen führt.” Dieser Antrag wird nun auch unserer Synode im
Oktober vorgelegt. Bei den Vorbereitungstreffen, über Korrespondenz
und Vorträge sollen die Gemeinden über den jetzigen Stand informiert
werden und in den Denkprozess mit einsteigen.
3. Die Synodenvorbereitugnstreffen der ELKSA(NT) sind ein
wichtiges Instrument zur Vorbereitung der Synoden. Den Synodalen
bietet es die Gelegenheit, sich mit dem Stoff vertraut zu machen,
klärende Fragen zu stellen und Gedanken darüber auszutauschen.
Für Kirchenvorsteher und Schatzmeister ist es die Gelegenheit vor der
Synode mit dem Schatzmeister der Kirche und Präsidenten der
Synode über die Finanzen und Kirchengesetze zu sprechen und noch
Änderungsvorschläge einzubringen.
Für Gemeindeglieder im Allgemeinen ist es die Möglichkeit, einen
kleinen Einblick zu bekommen in das, was auf der Synode passieren
soll.
Die Einladung zu den Treffen werden vom jeweiligen Dekan
verschickt.

5. September: Süddekanat, Hillcrest
19. September: Zentral-und Norddekanat, St Peters Pretoria

Eine Antwort auf eine immer wieder aufkommende Frage!
Aus dem Abendstern
Ein Kranker besucht den Arzt und erhält keine gute Auskunft. Er
ergreift die Hand des frommen Mannes: “Ach, Herr Doktor, ich fürchte
mich vor dem Tod; sagen Sie mir, was dann kommt!”
Der Arzt schweigt, geht zur Tür und öffnet diese. Herein kommt der
Hund des Patienten, der draussen auf seinen Herrn gewartet hatte und
zeigt grosse Freude.
“Haben Sie Ihren Hund beobachtet?” fragt der Arzt. ”Noch nie war der
Hund in diesem Zimmer. Er wusste nur, dass sein Herr auf der
anderen Seite der Tür ist. Ich weiß wenig davon, was uns nach dem
Tod erwartet, aber eins weiß ich: Mein Herr steht auf der anderen
Seite, und das ist mir genug”.

ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity
and pornography and called it freedom of
expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored
values of our forefathers and called it
enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our
hearts today; cleanse us from sin and set us free.
Amen!'
With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over
our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire
so that we once again can be called:
'One nation under God!'
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it
was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because
even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a
human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.
The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

God’s number is never engaged
You know those sometimes irritating messages you get when you’re phoning
some company. Well, voicemail is probably one of those necessary things about
modern life. And sometimes they do make life more efficient.
But what if God had a voicemail?
Just imagine praying and getting the following messages:
Thank you for calling My Father’s House.
Please select one of the following options:
Press 1 for Requests
Press 2 for Thanksgiving
Press 3 for Complaints
Press 4 for All Other Inquiries.
What if God used the familiar excuse: “I’m sorry, all our angels are busy helping
other sinners right nowl Your prayer is important to us, however, and will be
answered in the order it was received, so please stay on the line.”
Can you imagine getting these kinds of responses from prayer?
