Seit 5. Februar ist Prof.
Dr. Wolfram Decker (Algebra, Geometrie und
Computeralgebra) neuer
Dekan an unserem Fachbereich. Seine Amtszeit beträgt 3 Jahre.
Er löst Prof. Dr. René
Pinnau ab, der ihn als
Prodekan vertreten wird.

Dritte Amtszeit des Präsidenten
Der Senat der TU
Kaiserslautern hat
Prof. Dr. Helmut J.
Schmidt mit überwältigender Mehrheit wiedergewählt.
19 der 22 anwesenden Senatsmitglieder
stimmten für ihn als Präsidenten. Er war
der einzige Kandidat, den der Hochschulrat
im Oktober zur Wahl vorgeschlagen
hatte, und er ist der erste Präsident in der
43-jährigen Geschichte der TU, der für eine
dritte Amtszeit gewählt wurde.
1998 wurde er erstmals zum Vizepräsidenten der Universität Kaiserslautern
gewählt und 2002 in diesem Amt bestätigt.
Die erste Wahl zum Präsidenten, noch
durch die Versammlung, erfolgte im Mai
2002, die erste Wiederwahl in 2007 durch
den Senat. Besondere Auszeichnungen
waren in 1992 der Bennigsen-FoerderPreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen und
in 2005 die Ehrendoktorwürde des Shonan
Institute of Technology in Japan.
Er ist Vorstandsvorsitzender der Stipendienstiftung des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz
und der Science Alliance Kaiserslautern,
gegründet als ein Zusammenschluss
renommierter Forschungsinstitute und
der TU Kaiserslautern, darunter Institute
der Fraunhofer- und der Max-PlanckGesellschaft sowie dem Deutschen
Forschungszentrum
für
Künstliche
Intelligenz (DFKI), und er ist Mitglied im
Universitätsrat der Universität Salzburg.
Die TU Kaiserslautern ist die einzige
Technische Universität in RheinlandPfalz. Als Präsident der Technischen
Universität Kaiserslautern vertritt Schmidt
die Interessen von zwölf Fachbereichen
sowie von rund 14.200 Studierenden und
von über 2.000 Mitarbeitern.

Installation of Logo
A gate on top of the ‚tower‘-building! It‘s a
great plastic of the university‘s logo, the
‚gate of science‘, installed on the roof of
building 47. The owners of the building,
Josef Skipiol and Otto Buhler are sponsors
of the plastic which has a remarkable size of
8 Meter height, 7 Meter width and weighs
6 tons. The logo is clearly visible from many
places in town and is illuminated during the
night. It‘s a great orientation help for visitors.
In newsletter number 50 we presented
the sculpture of the ‚Tor der Wissenschaft‘
near building 56 on the campus. It was the
inspiration for the universitys‘ logo.

Skulpturen an der Uni
Schulsports und der Sportorganisationen
wie auch in der sportwissenschaftlichen
angewandten Forschung. Mit der räumlichen
Konzentration auf dem Unigelände entsteht
ein Sportcampus der kurzen Wege.
Meditative Triangelzone
“Meditative Triangelzone” nennt sich das
Kunstwerk, das der japanische Künstler
Atsuo Okamota 1982 bei einem internationalen Steinhauer-Symposium der technischen
Universität geschaffen hat. Die drei in einem
Dreieck aufgestellten Sandsteingebilde stehen auf einer freien Wiese an der Rückseite
des Gebäudes 52.
3. FROM KAISERSLAUTERN
Sportbund auf dem Campus
Der Sportbund Pfalz hat auf dem Gelände
der TU ein neues Gebäude gebaut.
Hinter der Unisporthalle steht das 8 Meter
breite und 48 Meter lange Gebäude auf
einem Streifen, der keine Ausbauoption der
Universität gewesen wäre.
Mit einem Neubau der Geschäftsstelle
vollzieht der Sportbund Pfalz nun auch
räumlich gesehen den Schritt zum Netzwerk
„Sportzentrum Pfalz“. Das Sportzentrum
Pfalz ist ein Zusammenschluss von TUHochschulsport und -Sportwissenschaft,
Institut für Angewandte Sportwissenschaft,
der Eliteschule des Sports Heinrich-HeineGymnasium, der TSG Kaiserslautern und des
Sportbundes Pfalz. Das Sportzentrum verfolgt
ein Konzept der engen Verzahnung und
Zusammenarbeit von Praxis und Wissenschaft
im Sportstudium und im Vorbereitungsdienst
der künftigen Sportlehrkräfte, in der Praxis des
Der Sportbund Pfalz ist der Dachverband
des pfälzischen Sports. Er wurde 1949
gegründet und hat seitdem seinen Sitz in
Kaiserslautern.

Angela Merkel elected chancellor for the
third term
After the member vote of the Social
Democratic Party (SPD) resulted in an
overwhelming majority supporting the
coaliton deal with the Christian Democratic
Union (CDU), Angela Merkel has been
elected chancellor for the third time by the
Bundestag (lower house of parliament) on
December 17, 2013.
Merkel’s „grand coalition“ government,
which holds 505 of the parliaments 631
seats, is an alliance between the Christian
Democratic Union (CDU), their Bavarian
sister party Christian Social Union (CSU)
and the center-left Social Democratic Party
(SPD).
After the inauguration of Chancellor Merkel,
her new cabinet - in total 15 ministers - was
inaugurated. The new Vice Chancellor is
SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel, who also has
been named Minister of Economy and
Energy. Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) is
the first woman leading the Defense Ministry
in Germany.

Study Abroad
experience report of
Lisa Maria Kreußer
at the
National University of Singapore
From August 2013 to December 2013 I had
the chance to study at the National University of Singapore. The exchange program
is very well organized. After being nominated by the TU Kaiserslautern to study at the
National University of Singapore, one has
to submit an online application where you
can also indicate that you would like to stay
on campus. Accommodation in Singapore
is very expensive. Since housing on campus is much more affordable, many students try to stay on campus. There are three
different housing options: residences, residential colleges and halls. In the residential
colleges and halls you can either stay in an
apartment with other students or in a room
on your own and a meal plan is compulsory.
Besides, many activities are offered for students living in these types of accommodation. The residences are similar to student
housing in Germany. I have decided to stay
in one of the residential colleges where I
have met many local and foreign students
and I have enjoyed our long conversations
very much.
August to mid-December for Semester 1. I
suggest coming to Singapore a few days before the lectures start in order to meet other
students and get used to the humid climate.
The National University of Singapore is very
well equipped and modern. Additionally, the
university is highly ranked in international
rankings. At the department of Mathematics
at the National University of Singapore, modules in applied and pure Mathematics are
offered, but most modules you can get credit points for at TU Kaiserslautern belong to
applied mathematics. Besides, it is possible
to choose modules from other departments.
In order to get a better insight into life and
culture in Asia, many international students
choose modules on Asian culture or start
learning Chinese. I have taken four modules
in mathematics, namely “Stochastic Processes”, “Game Theory” and “Mathematics
for Visual Data Processing” as well as “Methods of Applied Math”. Besides, I have taken “Chinese 1”, a course on basic Chinese
where you can learn Chinese in a fun way.
The grading system in Singapore is different
from the one in Kaiserslautern. During the
semester you have to submit assignments
that are marked and contribute to your final grade. Moreover, there are two written
exams for each Math module, one exam in
the middle of the term and one at the end of
the semester. The final grade every student
is awarded after the end of the semester is

7. FCK
Rückrunde
Punkten für den Aufstieg - das ist das Ziel
für die verbleibenden 15 Zweitligaspiele ab
dem 8. Februar. Dafür bereiteten sich die
Roten Teufel im Trainingslager in Belek,
Türkei, vor. Das FCK-Motto bis Mai heißt:
Gas geben und nicht bremsen lassen.
Eine Überraschung gibt es bereits: Srdjan
Lakic kommt zurück nach Kaiserslautern.
Vor 3 Jahren spielte er sehr erfolgreich
beim FCK, wechselte dann aber nach
Wolfsburg. Dort kam er kaum zum Einsatz,
wurde ausgeliehen an Hoffenheim und Eintracht Frankfurt. Jetzt kommt er ablösefrei
zurück. Trainer Kosta Runjaic freut sich auf
diese Alternative im Sturm. Aber wie werden die Fans ihn aufnehmen? Das erste
Spiel in der Rückrunde ist am 8. Februar
gegen Greuther Fürth.
