Successful trading.
Successful trading.
The Bartels-Langness group of companies has been in existence
for more than 120 years. Founded in Kiel in 1892, the company is
now being managed by the fourth generation of owners.
Successful trading.
Our successful company history is characterised by healthy growth and
a close association with our homeland. The factors contributing to our
success are a wide range of products, freshness and quality, individual,
intensive customer support and flexible, efficient logistics.
Last but least, the company‘s success is based on the expert knowledge
and competence, commitment and team spirit of its employees that
number over 16,000.
Our group of companies has weathered many storms in the business
landscape over the last few years. Let us look back together and read
what has made us what we are today:
Bela – every day everywhere.

The business landscape has changed substantially
during the last few decades.
First-class service.
The business landscape has changed substantially over the last few decades. The removal of retail price controls in the 1970s brought structural changes in the retail sector, which led to the establishment of
branch systems amongst other things. Since then price wars, an almost
unrestrained increase in sales areas and cut-throat competition have
dominated the business.
Top 15 in 2014 1
Bartels-Langness has always accepted these challenges and re-positioned itself strategically. Through continuous growth the company has
now secured itself a place in the top 15 grocery retailers, and even in
the top 10 in the food sector.

cessful wholesale development of Bartels-Langness is founded. The
independent retailers and petrol station customers above all ap-
preciate the punctual, reliable and fast deliveries provided by Bela.
Logistics in a nutshell.
Orders are dispatched within 24 hours. Bela‘s delivery standard includes daily deliveries of dairy products, fruit and vegetables, meat, dry
foodstuffs and toiletries throughout Germany. The main supply areas
are the whole of northern Germany, Berlin and Saxony.
The three warehouse locations are modern, efficient and have good
transport links. All three are certified in accordance with the IFS international standard and are therefore subject to a comprehensive quality
management system. Compliance with and the continuous optimisation
of procedures such as HACCP, batch tracing, cooling chain and hygiene
regulations are a matter of course.
The company‘s own fleet of lorries covers approximately 10 million
kilometres per annum. As well as the traditional lorries with trailers,
four impressive double-decker lorries also travel the roads for Bela.
The high distribution density in northern Germany ensures deliveries
are made efficiently.

A lot has changed over 100 years of business advertising.
What has remained is the belief that only people who understand
how to communicate the range they offer and the services they
provide convincingly can sell groceries successfully.
Successful advertising.
The sales lines of Bartels-Langness use a large number of advertising
media, which reach consumers‘ sitting rooms on a regular basis. Approximately 165 million brochures and flyers are distributed every year.
An in-house customer newspaper, radio advertising, weekly advertisements and regional sponsorship ensure that we are always a positive
subject of conversation. In addition to our own high quality brands,
fresh products and the diverse services of the individual sales lines,
the manufacturers‘ brands are the focus of communication.

changes in consumer behaviour, growth of sales area, price wars
–the requirements in food retailing are extremely high. Only people who continually develop further and gain the trust of their
consumers with high quality and continuity can enjoy long-term

northern Germany.
Backring Nord, the largest private specialist wholesaler for bakeries,
pastry shops and ice cream parlours, belongs to our group of companies. Approximately 4,400 customers throughout northern Germany
trust our experience in the bakery trade. The right product is always
available ranging from flavourings, via spices to baking additives and
snacks. A total of 23,000 items are in stock in all four warehouses. The
delivery area stretches from the Danish border to Hesse and from Holland to Poland.
We have also been baking ourselves since 1996. The Steiskal bakery
operates approximately 80 branches in the Kiel-Rendsburg area and
has committed itself to traditional baking techniques. Its new production facilities enable Steiskal‘s bakers to set new, high standards for
quality and product assortment. In 2012 another traditional artisan
bakery became part of the Bela family: Dat Backhus with over 120
branches in the Hamburg area. A piece of Hamburg that tastes good!

„Life is too short to drink bad wine“ the great poet Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe once said. True to this motto, Bartels-Langness has
built up a high level of expertise in the wine trade and winegrowing over many decades.
Winegrowers and merchants.
P. Schneekloth Söhne GmbH is the most northerly winery and wine importing company in Germany. Founded in 1816, this is the oldest company in the Group. It has belonged 100 % to Bartels-Langness since
1950. Every year approximately 2.5 million bottles are filled in the
Schneekloth filling plant in Kiel and delivered to customers. The trend
is upwards. Since 2005 Schneekloth has its own online wine shop
which can be found at www.schneekloth.de and which is expanding
continuously.
The S. J. Montigny vineyard was established in 2009 and is the youngest
company in the Group. The winegrower Steffen James Montigny is expanding his wine professionally at two locations: in Bretzenheim an der
Nahe and in Altmühlen in Schleswig-Holstein. Whilst a traditional vineyard covering 34 ha of cultivated area and with the latest cellar technology has grown up in Bretzenheim, Steffen J. Montigny is undertaking
pioneering work in Altmühlen: he is one of Germany‘s first winegrowers to grow wine for a living in Schleswig-Holstein. His rebellious answer to any doubters of this project is: the first harvest „So mookt wi
dat“ was awarded 83 points in the well-known Gault & Millau wine
guide!

About 27 million pets live in German households.
Whether it‘s a dog, cat, canary, fish or hamster – they all want to
be well fed.
Extremely good.
In 1999 Bartels-Langness took a holding in the pet food chain called
DAS FUTTERHAUS. It‘s Germany‘s second-largest franchise system for
pet food and accessories. „Das Futterhaus“ currently offers a selection
comprising 45,000 items of food and accessories at over 300 sites in
Germany and Austria and stands for competent advice on pet issues.
The holding in the pet food specialist wholesaler Logipet also led to
synergies in this sector in 2001 and a very successful business model.
The pet food range available at Logipet includes 2,500 items and comes
from all over Europe. It primarily focuses on special ranges, which are
provided only to pet shops. The delivery area covers the entire Federal
Republic.

Salesmen are known for their confidentiality. They concentrate
on doing business – and don‘t talk for a long time.
Success stories.
Nevertheless the actions of the Bartels-Langness group of companies
have already been comprehensively documented in the press in the
early days and over the years.
The events covered include new openings, collaboration, sponsorship
or anniversaries - there was and is a lot to report on about the group of
companies. More than 2,000 press publications every year document
the committed action of Bartels-Langness.
Open communication is unavoidable in the current media landscape –
consumers want to be well-informed and would like to know who they
are buying from. We will tell you about it.
