The group was constituted in 1992 as a result of a successful series of annual conferences called THE MACROPHAGE. The annual macrophage conference originated from meetings in the Upper Rhine area organized by scientists from the universities and research centers of Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel, but rapidly grew to a European format. On April 28, 1999, the European Macrophage Society (EMS) was founded in Regensburg. At the end of year 2000, the members of the EMS decided to rename the society as European Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Society (EMDS) in order to better emphasize the two main streams of research within the Society. The EMDS currently has 485 members from 34 countries. The famous medieval cities of Nürnberg and Bamberg (a world heritage) are nearby. Erlangen is a university city with just above 100,000 inhabitants. The older part of the city was officially founded in 1367, the newer Huguenot city dates from 1686. The Huguenot Erlangen is one of the last remaining examples of baroque planning, laid out in a rectangular arrangement of streets and large squares. The beautiful baroque garden, the Schloßgarten, and the Orangerie is located in the center of Erlangen surrounded by impressive buildings from the 18th and 19th century. The 2013 EMDS meeting will focus on the impact of the Microenvironment on myeloid cell activities, a topic which in recent years has been fueled by exciting discoveries. Myeloid cells are not only modulated by the normal Microflora, pathogenic Microorganisms and tumor cells, but also by Micronutrients and by Milieu conditions commonly present in inflamed tissues (e.g. hypoxia). All these factors influence the Metabolism of myeloid cells, which in turn again alters their functions. The aim of the conference is to provide an integrated view on the big “M´s” in myeloid cell research.
