The European Macrophage and Dendritic Cell
Society
The European Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Society
(EMDS) has emerged from the activities of the former
European Macrophage Study Group (EMSG), a loose
association of scientists interested in basic and clinical
aspects of monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells and
other myleoid cells in man and experimental animal
models. The group was constituted in 1992 as a result of
a successful series of annual conferences called THE
MACROPHAGE. The annual macrophage conference
originated from meetings in the Upper Rhine area organized by scientists from the universities and research
centers of Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel, but rapidly
grew to a European format. On April 28, 1999, the European Macrophage Society (EMS) was founded in Regensburg. At the end of year 2000, the members of the EMS
decided to rename the society as European Macrophage
and Dendritic Cell Society (EMDS) in order to better
emphasize the two main streams of research within the
Society. The EMDS currently has 485 members from 34
countries. For more information and registration as a

Erlangen is located in Franconia in the North of Bavaria, a
region that is well known for its cultural heritage and the
very scenic area called “Franconian Switzerland”. The
famous medieval cities of Nürnberg and Bamberg (a world
heritage) are nearby. Erlangen is a university city with just
above 100,000 inhabitants. The older part of the city was
officially founded in 1367, the newer Huguenot city dates
from 1686. The Huguenot Erlangen is one of the last
remaining examples of baroque planning, laid out in a
rectangular arrangement of streets and large squares. The
beautiful baroque garden, the Schloßgarten, and the
Orangerie is located in the center of Erlangen surrounded
by impressive buildings from the 18th and 19th century.

Central Scientific Theme of the 27th Annual EMDS
Meeting
Andreas Diefenbach, Germany
Myeloid cells fulfill central functions in the immune
system such as antigen-presentation, killing of infectious
pathogens, and the activation or suppression of T cell
responses. The 2013 EMDS meeting will focus on the
impact of the Microenvironment on myeloid cell activities,
a topic which in recent years has been fueled by exciting
discoveries. Myeloid cells are not only modulated by the
normal Microflora, pathogenic Microorganisms and tumor
cells, but also by Micronutrients and by Milieu conditions
commonly present in inflamed tissues (e.g. hypoxia). All
these factors influence the Metabolism of myeloid cells,
which in turn again alters their functions. The aim of the
conference is to provide an integrated view on the big
“M´s” in myeloid cell research.
