Rita Ibérico Nogueira é a cara do Fora de
Série, suplemento mensal do Diário
Económico dedicado ao luxo. Mas não pense
que a editora desta revista é uma mulher
que anda de motorista para todo o lado: de
Nova Iorque, recorda com nostalgia um
hotel no Upper East Side que tinha buracos
de bala no tecto; da Fazenda de Santa
Margarida, onde retempera anualmente as
energias, destaca a passarada que lhe
sobrevoa os jantares. Rita não prescinde de
uma temporada nesta fazenda situada
entre Poço Branco e Touros, no Rio Grande
do Norte. O Brasil merece este destaque
porque foi lá que a jornalista passou grande
parte da infância. Entre 1977 e 1984 viveu
com os pais e o irmão mais novo no Rio de
Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul e
Portalegre. Viajante precoce (só regressaria
a Portugal aos nove anos), Rita aterrou em
Timor com apenas um mês de idade, o que
se pode considerar um prenúncio da
correria em que se tornou a sua vida de
adulta. Trabalhou na estação televisiva SIC,
passou por uma produtora e foi jornalista
do semanário Euronotícias, que em 2000
trocou pelo Diário Económico. MARIA JOÃO

E Rita Ibérico Nogueira is the face of Fora de
Série, Diário Económico’s monthly
supplement devoted to luxury. But don’t
think for a minute that the editor of this
magazine is a woman who’s chauffer-driven
wherever she goes: from New York, she
nostalgically remembers a hotel in Upper
East Side with bullet holes in the ceiling;
and from the Fazenda de Santa Margarida,
where she goes every year she recoup her
energy, she recalls the bird-filled skies at
dinner. Rita refuses to give up her regular
visits to this farm situated between Poço
Branco and Touros, in Rio Grande do Norte.
Brazil is especially important to her because
it was there that the journalist spent most of
her childhood. Between 1977 and 1984 she
lived with her parents and younger brother
in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do
Sul and Portalegre. A traveller from an early
age (she only returned to Portugal when
nine years old), Rita landed in Timor when
she was only one month old, which can be
considered a portent to the globe-trotting
that was to become her adult life. She
worked at the SIC television station, and
then for a production company and was a
journalist for the weekly publication
Euronotícias, which in 2000 she swapped for

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND
\\\ Exceptuando os livrinhos da editora Assouline, é, segundo Rita, pouquíssima a
documentação escrita sobre jóias. Por causa de uma edição anual do Fora de Série
dedicado à joalharia, Rita está a especializar-se nesta área. Sempre que vai a Paris
não deixa de palmilhar a Place Vendôme para espreitar as novas tendências da alta
joalharia. Aqui estão representadas as maiores lojas, como a Channel, a Chaumet,
a Mauboussin, a Dior, de onde destaca as criações de Victoire de Castellane. Nestas
andanças, paragem obrigatória é o Café L’Avenue onde “se pode encontrar toda a
gente que é gente”. É onde “lava os olhos” e prova “aquelas coisas francesas a atirar
para o chique” que podem ser vieiras, lagosta ou trufas. Para descansar à altura,
nada melhor do que uma noite no Hotel Tremoille. As inspirações de Rita não se
cingem à vida faustosa de Paris. Situada no nobre bairro de Ipanema, a loja H. Stern
do Rio de Janeiro é rainha em matéria de joalharia e oferece aos clientes um spa e
restaurante. Em Nova Iorque, a Harry Winston e a Tiffany são as joalharias de
referência.
\\\ With the exception of the little books published by Assouline, there is very little
written on jewellery according to Rita. As a result of an annual edition of Fora de
Série devoted to jewellery, Rita is becoming a specialist in this area. Whenever she
goes to Paris she makes a point of visiting Place Vendôme to look at the new
fashions in high jewellery. The most important shops can be found here, such as
Channel, Chaumet, Mauboussin, Dior, where creations of Victoire de Castellane
particularly stand out. Café L’Avenue is an absolute must on these outings, where
“you can meet everyone who is anyone”. This is where she “refreshes her eyes” and
tastes “those very chic French things” in the shape of scallops, lobsters or truffles,
and for a night’s rest in the same sort of style, nothing better than the Hotel
Tremoille. However, Rita’s inspirations are not limited to the extravagant side of
Parisian life. Situated in the refined district of Ipanema, the H. Stern shop in Rio de
Janeiro is supreme in terms of jewellery, plus it also offers its clients a spa and
restaurant. In New York, Harry Winston and Tiffany are the top jewellers.

\\\ Rita adora comer e considera tarefa
dificílima apontar uma gastronomia de
eleição. Entre a exótica cozinha
tailandesa do restaurante The Pavilion,
no Hotel Datai, ilha de Langkawi, Malásia,
e a saborosa gastronomia baiana, o
problema é escolher. Pela conversa vão
desfilando o bobó de camarão, a
moqueca de peixe ou a casca de siri,
entrada obrigatória no restaurante
Yemanjá, na praia de Armação em
Salvador da Baía. Eclética no gosto,
sempre que vai a Paris Rita não dispensa
uma ida à Patisserie La Durée, onde
compra “quilos de macarrons”. A mais
recente febre vinda de Paris é o soufflé.
Entre as praças Vendôme, Madeleine e
Concorde, o Le Soufflé inspirou-a de tal
forma que ultimamente Rita põe o
avental e experimenta uma série de
variantes desta iguaria francesa. A sua
última tentativa resultou num soufflé de
framboesa.
\\\ Rita adores eating and finds it
virtually impossible to decide on her
favourite type of food. Between the
exotic Thai cuisine of The Pavilion, in the
Hotel Datai, on the Island of Langkawi,
Malaysia, and the delicious gastronomy
of Bahia, the only problem is choosing.
During our conversation, Rita talks about
the wonderful “prawn bobó”, “fish
moqueca” and “casca de siri” starters at
the Yemanjá restaurant at Armação
beach in Salvador da Bahia. Eclectic in
her taste, whenever she goes to Paris,
Rita always visits Patisserie La Durée,
where she buys “kilos of macaroons”.
The newest gastronomic fad in Paris is
the soufflé. Between the Vendôme,
Madeleine and Concorde squares, Le
Soufflé has inspired her to such an
extent that Rita has donned an apron
and tried to create a variety of this
French delicacy. Her latest attempt was
a raspberry soufflé.

Musical state of mind
\\\ Um objecto indispensável que Rita leva consigo
nas suas jornadas é o iPod cor-de-rosa choque. Nesta
pequena caixinha mágica condensa música para todos
os estados de espírito. Ultimamente, confessa, anda
a viver uma onda revivalista. Neste universo cabem
ritmos tão díspares como os Cure, Maria Bethânia
ou Nouvelle Vague. Este projecto de Olivier Libeaux e
Marc Collins –que ressuscitou clássicos da New Wave
da década de 80 e lhes deu uma nova roupagem num
registo bossa nova picante – ruma à Holanda para
uma actuação em Oosterpoort na cidade de Gronigen,
a 7 de Abril, seguindo para a capital holandesa,
para actuar na sala de espectáculos Melkweg no dia
seguinte. Destaca também a alegria contagiante dos
desenfreados Carlinhos Brown e O Rappa. Estes
últimos actuam em Los Angeles a 3 de Abril.
\\\ One of the essentials that Rita takes with her on her
travels is her shocking pink iPod. This small box of
tricks condenses music for all moods. Lately, she
confesses, she has been surfing a bit of a revivalist
wave, which includes different sounds ranging from
the Cure and Maria Bethânia to Nouvelle Vague. The
Nouvelle Vague project by Olivier Libeaux and Marc
Collins, which revives New Wave classics of the 1980s
and revamps them along “lounge” lines, is heading for
Holland for a concert at Oosterpoort in the city of
Gronigen, on 7th April, followed by a performance in
the Dutch capital, at the Melkweg entertainment venue
on the following day. Also worth a look and a listen is
the contagious joy of the unruly Carlinhos Brown and
O Rappa, both booked to perform in Los Angeles on
3rd April.

\\\ Desde a adolescência que mantém uma autêntica
ligação amorosa com Nova Iorque. Sempre se
imaginou ali a viver, e foi pedida em casamento em
pleno Central Park. Na cidade que nunca dorme,
gosta sobretudo de andar a pé e de almoçar no
Cipriani’s, no Soho, onde aconselha que se faça
marcação prévia. A última vez que lá poisou, respirou
o mesmo ar que celebridades como Helena
Christensen, Roberto Cavalli ou Piero Ferrari. Rita, no
entanto, não se deixa ofuscar com tanto brilho,
regressando sempre que pode ao museu Guggenheim
e ao MoMa. No primeiro pode ver-se até ao fim de
Maio a exposição I Want to Believe, do artista plástico
chinês Cai Guo-Qiang; no segundo pode-se apreciar a
mostra de fotografia de Jan de Cock. A jornalista
também não deixa de passar pela Frick Collection,
sediada em plena Manhattan, com obras de Vermeer,
Goya e Rembrandt.
\\\ She has nurtured a veritable love affair with New
York since her adolescence, always imagining herself
living there, and being proposed to in the middle of
Central Park. In the city that never sleeps, she
particularly likes to walk and have lunch at Cipriani’s
in Soho, where she suggests reserving a table. The
last time she visited it, she rubbed shoulders with
celebrities such as Helena Christensen, Roberto
Cavalli and Piero Ferrari. However, Rita isn’t easily
blinded by such sparkle and returns whenever she
can to the Guggenheim museum and MoMa. At the
former, the exhibition I Want to Believe, by the Chinese
artist Cai Guo-Qiang, can be seen until the end of May;
a sample of the photography of Jan de Cock can be
enjoyed at the latter. The journalist also always visits
the Frick Collection, located in the middle of
Manhattan, with works by Vermeer, Goya and
Rembrandt.
PORTUGAL NO BRASIL / PORTUGAL IN BRAZIL
\\\ Rita adora desbravar o Brasil profundo. Aluga um
carro e atravessa paisagens que parecem ter a mão
da providência divina. Uma das descobertas que a
impressionou mais foi Paraty, que “parecia Portugal
em pequenino”. Nesta cidade à beira-mar, património
nacional, ficou hospedada na Pousada Pardieiro,
imaginada pelo grande actor Paulo Autran que, apesar
do nome, “está longe de ser um pardieiro”. Do leque de
elogios salienta o maravilhoso café da manhã composto
por sumo de laranja, mel, chá, café, chocolate, pão,
manteiga, geleia caseira, sequilho (biscoito), fiambre,
coalhada e queijo branco, entre outras delícias. Depois
deste energético reforço matinal, caminhe pelo centro
histórico desta cidade construída à volta da neoclássica
Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Os seus
casarões e respectivas paredes decoradas com símbolos
maçónicos e as igrejas coloniais transportam-nos para
tempos recuados e facilmente se imagina como seria a
vida no Brasil de antigamente. As centrais ruas pedonais
ajudam bem a esta viagem na máquina do tempo. Entre
mergulhos, não deixe de fazer um trilho nos Parques
Nacional da Serra da Bocaina e Estadual da Serra do Mar.
\\\ Rita adores discovering deepest Brazil. She hires a car
and crosses landscapes that appear to have been created
by the hands of divine providence. One of the discoveries
that impressed her most was Paraty, which “appeared to
be a miniature version of Portugal”. In this coastal city,
classified as a national heritage site, she stayed at
Pousada Pardieiro, created by the great actor Paulo Autran
which, despite its name, is far from being a “house in
ruins”. Among her favourites, she highlights the
marvellous breakfast of orange juice, honey, tea, coffee,
hot chocolate, bread, butter, homemade jam, sequilho
(biscuit), ham, cottage and soft cheese, amongst other
delicacies. After this energy-packed morning repast, take
a walk through the historic centre of this city built around
the neoclassical Parish Church of Our Lady of Remedies.
Its mansions and respective walls decorated with Masonic
symbols and the colonial churches take us back in time
where it’s easy to imagine what life was like in Brazil in a
bygone age. The main pedestrian streets help us on this
journey through time. Between swims, she never fails to
take a trip through the National Parks of Serra da Bocaina
and Estadual da Serra do Mar.

BAD HABITS OF THE PRESS Rita is a self-confessed workaholic and can rarely manage
to switch off. Whenever she travels to New York, she likes to discover the latest in graphic
design at the Barnes & Nobles bookshop. This is where she also stocks up on the kilos
of magazines she uses for inspiration: Mother Jones, Vanity Fair, New Yorker, Esquire, GQ,
Portfolio, Vogue, W, Monocle, Wallpaper and Rolling Stone are just some of her most frequent
purchases. One of these days she will have to hire a warehouse just to store the hundreds
of magazines she has bought over the past few years.
