4. Dipartimento di Discipline Odontostomatologia, Università di Pavia, Italia Original paper Objective: To investigate whether healthy subjects show similar right and left masticatory cycles, as the cycle area and the lengths in opening and closing jaw pathways, in the frontal and sagittal planes. Methods: Eight healthy subjects of both genders (mean age = 28.6±11.59), without TMD participated in the study. The movements during the mastication were recorded using an optoelectronic three-dimensional motion analyzer (Smart; BTS, Milano, Italy). During the execution of movements, a set of 9 cameras recognized the coordinates of passive markers and their three-dimensional movements were obtained. The recording of the individual’s intercuspal position of the teeth were used as a baseline. A gum was chewed, first to right and then to left; 16 cycles on each side were analyzed. The Wilcoxon test was used for the comparison between right and left mastication. It was considered significant P < 0.05. Results: There were not significant differences between right and left masticatory cycles in the frontal and sagittal planes(P > 0,05). In the frontal plane, during the right mastication the mean of the working side cycle area, from the interincisal point, was 21,19±15,35 mm2, while during left mastication was 24,23±10,30 mm2. The means of cycle length in opening and closing pathways during the right mastication were 12,54±3,63 mm and 12,68±3,79mm, in the left mastication were 13,65±2,65 mm and 13,61±2,52mm, respectively. The balancing side percentage cycles area were 0,30±0,25% during the right mastication and 0,43±0,29% during left mastication. In the sagittal plane, the mean of working side cycle area during the right mastication was 9,79±4,67 mm2, while during left mastication was 12,05±5,19 mm2. The means of cycle length in opening and closing during the right mastication were 12,46±3,92 mm e 12,55±3,8mm, in the left mastication were 14,24±3,40 mm e 14,34±3,55mm. Conclusion: Healthy subjects showed similar right and left masticatory cycles regarding the cycle area of the working side, the length of the opening and closing jaw movements, in the frontal and sagittal planes. More, in the frontal plane, they showed similar percentage of cycle area of the balancing side, during the right and left mastication. Keywords: mastication; movement analysis; diagnosis
