Linda Leonardo was born and lives for Fado. From a very early age, even while still at school, the passion for this type of music was apparent in her, and it was for this reason that, at the age of twenty, she began performing at the most prestigious Fado houses in both Lisbon and Porto. Whether singing in typical houses, casinos or in shows abroad - where in the nineties she performed before the Portuguese communities - Linda’s singing is always full of depth and feeling that emerge from her very soul. When she sings, it is not only the warm clarity of the voice, the concentrated expression, the composed bearing, that give all the meaning intended by the lyricist to the words; Linda gives much more with her inspired performance. This takes the form of melodic variations - her own special nuances, without imitation of any school or inspirational source of any earlier Fado singer, because the source is entirely from within her own heart. This artistic sensibility is complete, because she allies her own ability to write and compose excellent lyrics and music to all of this range and depth of performance. That same Fado soul manifests itself in the albums she has recorded: “Podia ter sido amor” (It could have been love), “Nosso Fado é sempre Fado” (Our Fado is always Fado), or in the performances she gave in the albums “Lisboa em vários tons” (Lisbon in various tones) and “Saudades do Fado” (Longing for Fado). The latter was created by the Group “Tertúlia de Fado Tradicional” and produced by Luís Penedo, President of the Academy for Fado and Portuguese Guitar. “Mistério de Fado” (Mystery of Fado) is undoubtedly the culmination of twenty years of singing. Fado is a state of the soul; it requires long experience and maturity, plus a total emotional commitment that only now Linda recognises through her life experience, and consequently in her singing. Tiago Torres da Silva/ Daniel Gouveia Marino de Freitas was born on Madeira Island on the 2nd of November, 1960. He studied at the Madeira Music Conservatoire and the Musicians Academy in London, where he graduated with distinction. He is a musician, composer, arranger and music producer. He has recorded with some of the great names of Fado, e.g. Mariza, Misia, Carlos do Carmo, Ana Moura, etc. In 1989 he received a ‘Distinction’ from the Madeira regional government for musical works in the region. In October 2006 he received a prize for “Best Fado Bass Guitarist of the Year” from the Amalia Rodrigues Foundation. Fado is a traditional but also contemporary style of singing in Portugal. The word comes from Latin fatum, which means 'fate'. Fado cannot only be described as a song. It represents a certain feeling which many people call the spirit of Portugal. These tragic and melancholic songs, beautiful and touching, relate a general sense of frustration and a unique Portuguese fatalism. They express a feeling which the Portuguese call “saudade”, an almost untranslatable word evoking longing, yearning and nostalgia. Guitarra portuguesa: A long-necked fretted lute, related to the Spanish bandurria and the English cittern. Its overall length is about 75 cm (29.5 in) and its neck ends in a unique fan-shaped tuning head. The guitarra has a pear-shaped body and is strung with six courses of metal double strings. Lisbon tuning: d d’, a a’, b b’, e’ e’, a’ a’, b’ b’; Coimbra tuning: c c’, g g’, a a’, d’ d’, g’ g’, a’ a’. It is mostly played together with the viola to accompany fado, playing improvisatory passages against the singer’s melody line. Lyrics: Tiago Torres Da Silva Music: Daniel Gouveia (Fado Daniel) José Manuel eto: Guitarra Portuguesa Diogo Clemente: Viola (classical guitar) Marino de Freitas: Double bass 1. Sung by everyone If I should whisper in your ear That Fado has asked me That no one sing it, Please, keep it a secret, Because Fado is afraid That someone may want to kill it. It feels so ashamed That it says it is no longer Fado, Nor does it believe that Fado still exists, Because whoever feels vanity In harbouring saudade*, Cannot consider himself a Fado singer. And so, Fado says That it cannot be happy Sung by everyone, And that perhaps with me It could be Fado once again, Just as it was in days gone by. That is why I tell it That when I harbour it My chest feels so tired. One day, perhaps I can Make Fado say, when crying, That it wants to be Fado again. * “saudade” is an untranslatable Portuguese word – it means the strong feeling of missing someone/something, and of longing for his/her/its return. Boat Fado If I sail on the waters of a new voyage, I feel the wind pushing me towards the unknown. I read charts and maps that teach the breeze To draw on the sails the picture Of the love I learnt, and gave to you. I feel the wind taking me to what I already know. The further I go on this boat of time The greater is this hope if there is a storm. I want to overcome the waves by defeating sorrow, Against pain and even against the wind. I go by sea without remembering the bad, The greater is this hope when there is a storm. Lives are tides And tides are moons That lighten or darken all around us. Much farther away the stars Are signs that guide us, Asking us to be their voice on land. This boat that I now sing to you, being life This life of courses and sails, being song The destiny that I myself raise, being the wind, It is in fado*, that I find enchantment Of the most beautiful words ahead. The word is a boat with courses and sails. Lives are tides And tides are moons, That lighten or darken all around us, Much farther away the stars Are signs that guide us, Asking us to be their voice on land. This boat that I now sing to you, being life This life of courses and sails, being song The destiny that I myself raise, being the wind It is in fado, that I find enchantment Of the most beautiful words ahead. The word is a boat with courses and sails. This fado is a boat with courses and sails. The word is a fado with courses and sails. * “Fado” can mean either Fado music or ‘Fate’ 2. I write your name I wrote your name in the sand And added to it a heart. A high tide came onto the shore, And swept them away. Far out, the rolling wave Wrapped up in your name, And a heart riding In the madness that consumes it. In the foam, there are signs of you. Instead of bringing back my longing, My outstretched arms Found only storms. On this beach where I lie, I have already forgotten the heart, But I keep writing your name Waiting for your return. 3. Face to Face I do not know if my heart Has grown weary of beating Just for the sake of beating, If one second becomes an hour, Since you went away And I never saw you again. I hear a noise outside, When saudade suggests That I got over you. And it is you out there, Your eyes watching my veranda, Waiting for me to appear. Refrain Time stands still and we are face to face, Like someone who is preparing To kill or to die, But the truth is, I see eternity In undoing this saudade, Which you have caused me. Days and months pass, Often with smiles, But also with tears. Time comes softly And, on seeing me, gently caresses me, Smiles, but moves on. When I no longer think of you And think I have forgotten The warmth of your embrace, By chance or by fate, As I turn a corner I stumble in your footsteps. 4. If I should tell him your name I complained to a Portuguese guitar About my captive heart, In the moment when it clings To the uncertainty in which I live. And it was you whom I missed And it was you, who told me, That the place where you wandered Was dark… and you couldn’t see me. Saudade came… and embraced me But then he quickly ran away, “If I were to tell him your name he would never return.” And it was I who waited for you And it was I, who knew you, In the Fado songs someone sang, Understanding what I was suffering! Then Fado found me And told me almost secretively, “If you should tell him my name, he will return sooner!” 5. Lyrics: Humberto Sotto Mayor Music: Marino De Freitas José Manuel eto: Guitarra Portuguesa Diogo Clemente: Viola (classical guitar) Marino de Freitas: Double bass 6. Time of the Seagulls How far away, that time of the seagulls, How far away, that sea that united us, How we trod new streets, new routes, How we gained this empty melancholy. How far away, the nostalgia of that afternoon, How far away, the sunset of that autumn, How eternal is our fire that does not burn, And how present is that quietness, this abandon. How close is this remoteness, this distance, Your presence, your not being close to me, And how insane is your absence, our childhood, Our lake, our garden bench. How far away is this yearning not to want you, How close to this mouth, despondency, Oh, how hurtful is this longing to see you, And how long it takes for this moment to pass. 6. Mystery of Fado There is a certain mystery Surrounding you, Lisbon, That no one can understand. A secret of a woman Who never says what she wants, A silence that is forgiven. Maybe a mistress’ saudades That distance you And silence your pain… Or maybe at each moment In a provocative silence, You recall nights of love… After the sun has set, When the moon already shines, With a guitar at your side, Your voice, oh city, In a mystery of saudade, Will confess itself in a fado song. 7. Forebodings I have a feeling that l have in my heart A love so wounded, That sometimes when I lie in bed, Fado* feels it has the right, To lie down by my side. I have a feeling of dawn, If I seek your eyes for help. And my weary soul, Seems to say nothing, But in silence, says all! I have a feeling the wind rises In your soul at nightfall. And it is in that feeling, That, without realising it, I imagine A pain worse than my own. Fado* is my instinct And pain my condition. So, I do not know if I am lying When I say I have the feeling, That your heart is in mine. But day by day I wander Street by street all alone. And while I have these feelings, Saudade unites My sadness to yours. * “Fado” can mean either Fado music or ‘Fate’ 8. E enquanto vou pressentindo, A saudade vai unindo A minha tristeza, á tua. Lyrics: Linda Leonardo Music: fado menor (popular) Fernando Silva: Guitarra Portuguesa Carlos Fonseca: Viola (classical guitar) Marino de Freitas: Double bass 9. Almost Perfect And everything was changed, Became different, almost perfect, My eyes are smiling And there is a garden in my breast. My knight, from whence do you come? From sea, land, or sky? I cannot forget the kiss That, with your lips, you gave me! Deserts I walked Of such dark clarity! Perhaps because my body, Longed for yours. And everything was changed… I can no longer live without you…! My lover, my love, I was reborn with your kiss! Now, I am Spring In bloom on a painted canvas. I am that bluebird, At the break of day. 9. Que não me esqueço do beijo Que a tua boca me deu! Desertos por onde andei De tão escura claridade. Talvez porque do teu corpo, O meu, sentia saudade. E tudo ficou diferente… Já nem sei viver sem ti…! Meu amante, meu amor, Do teu beijo renasci! Agora, sou primavera Florida em tela pintada. Sou aquele pássaro azul, No alto da madrugada. Lyrics: Tiago Torres Da Silva Music: Alfredo Marceneiro (Fado Laranjeira) Fernando Silva: Guitarra Portuguesa Carlos Fonseca: Viola (classical guitar) Marino de Freitas: Double bass 10. Corner of the Sky I don’t know if I was at the fish auction I don’t know if I felt cold But I do know I was a seagull Flying over the river. A seagull that glides In the sky that is within me, The shadow of a street That never ends. My heart flies, Without knowing the path That Lisbon mapped for it In a seagull’s flight. God willing, I will not forget That the sky has a corner, Where, whoever goes quickly, Does not see his own fate. Whoever does not believe That his soul can fly, Should not seek The kisses of Lisbon. A kiss revives, But a kiss also kills Whoever pretends to believe That the Tagus is all silver. A bullet pierces A sad end of day, But Lisbon does not die, Without first telling me: Because you have been a seagull, Maybe one day I will make A sky that includes the course Of the pain that afflicts me. 10. Little Lisbon Oh, little Lisbon You are a fish-seller’s cry, The girl of my eyes. Put your arm around my waist, Give me a tender kiss, Put on a frilly skirt. I put a wedding ring on my finger, I sent for a child, Who is the daughter of Madragoa* A prettier one I have not seen! I went to baptize her in the Tagus, And gave her the name Lisbon. Refrain Lisbon, Lisbon, Girl that sings, You are a heart That my song Carries in its throat. Lisbon, Lisbon, Old lady that laughs, You are a song That my heart Only sings for you. Oh, old lady Lisbon, When you want to be mine, I will burn an artichoke**. And you pray fervently At Our Lady of Health, That my heart won’t suffer. I ran, when I saw you so loud, So gay, so pretty, That you seemed like Life itself. It was Amália who was singing, A popular march, Coming down the avenue. * Traditional Lisbon quarter ** Traditional custom to win someone’s heart 11. Calling Loneliness Fado* It was a song I hardly knew It was a heart that I discovered, Weeping, Under the gaze, Of someone who, without my knowing, knew me. That heart, oh, how I wish Within my heart, waiting For my voice To undo the ties, That join autumn to spring Refrain But I wouldn’t have wanted to sing, Without having brought Fado Into my sad heart. Forgive me if I ever did so, It was because I was so unhappy, That I called loneliness Fado. It was a woman who was emerging in me, When a guitar told me that, in a minor key, Whoever knows how to turn night into day Sings best. It was a new love that brought me here. I say it was love, perhaps it was not, Only because Fado, Bashful, Told me it loved me and went away. * “Fado” can mean either Fado music or ‘Fate’ 12. Lyrics: Linda Leonardo Music: Marino De Freitas Ricardo Rocha: Guitarra Portuguesa Carlos Macieira: Viola (classical guitar) Marino de Freitas: Double bass 13. Lisbon, I know you by heart I am a fish-seller’s cry That crosses this city. And I always carry with me, Memories of an old fado, That rents the night in a shout Of words, that I won’t say. And I bring with me fado, Sung with such emotion On the strings of a guitar. I sat down in the afternoon Watching saudade arriving In that boat, without moorings. Adorned in a full moon, From Alfama* across to Bairro Alto*, In love with the Tagus. I come at night to kiss you, As if I were to leave you Each time we meet. I came for Fado, and I stayed! And in the verses that I sang, Lisbon, I know you by heart. More than love, is to love The secrets of your singing, Ah Lisbon, my love! * Traditional quarters of Lisbon 13. E trago comigo o fado, Tão sentido e tão cantado Nas cordas duma guitarra. Lyrics: João Conchinhas Music: Linda Leonardo Filipe Raposo: Piano António Barbosa: Violin Ricardo Mota: Cello 14. Sleep of Angels You never spoke to me of That dwelling place!? Where the body is as light As a breeze… Where time is something I do not understand… Where there is no way Of return… You never told me What house that is!? Where the walls are White clouds… Where there is no longer pain, nor weeping, Nor torment, Where there are no lies… Only truth! Refrain Tell me if that is the dwelling place Where angels sleep, Where the body is so light… Where there is no way Of return… Tell me if that is the dwelling place Where angels sleep, Where time is eternal… Because I would not wish To call it death!! 14. Sono dos anjos Nunca me falaste Dessa morada!? Onde o corpo é tão leve Como a brisa… Onde o tempo, é coisa Que não entendo… Onde não há caminho De regresso… Nunca me disseste Que casa é essa!?
