The bells in São João del-Rei
São João del-Rei has always been known as “the land
where the bells speak.” With their strikes the bells keep a
peculiar language of wealth regarding modality and
meanings still known to the people in São João. Small,
medium, and large, with various tones and sounds, the
bells are always transmitting messages. According to the
rhythm and number of strikes, it is possible to know what
solemnity will happen and where it will be held, whether
there will be a procession, the Mass time, and who will be
the celebrant.
