Was born in Faial Island (Azores) on October 1944. He obtained his degree in History and
completed his Ph. D. in Modern History at the University of the Azores. Member of the Centre for
the Portuguese Overseas History of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa/Universidade dos Açores and
member of the Centro de Estudos Gaspar Frutuoso da Universidade dos Açores. In 2007 a
scholarship granted by FLAD (Portuguese-American Foundation) allowed a two months stay in the
New Bedford Whaling Museum Research Library for research on the whaling history connections
between the USA and the Azores. Post-Doctoral Fellow (Portuguese Foundation for Science and
Technology) with a research project whose title is «The Dabney Century». Selected publications:
Contributions in specialized journals and chapters in books; Os Açores em finais do regime de
Capitania-Geral. 1800-1820, (Ph. D. thesis); Açores – Western Islands. Um contributo para o estudo do
turismo nos Açores ; De New Bedford aos Mares do Sul. Uma viagem da barca «Sea Ranger» com
escala pelo Fayal em 1869.
Editor of the Boletim do Núcleo Cultural da Horta. On May 2009 elected first President of the
General Council of the University of the Azores.
