E
ven if the automobile is one of the most powerful symbols of the American Dream, the recent war
in Iraq led many people to question the country’s dependence on oil. It wasn’t the car itself which
came under attack from environmentalists so much as some of the more wasteful models. The
massive SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, which is a truck on wheels, rather than a car, is a particular object
of hate: the Hummer, for example, gives you as little as 12 miles per gallon, whereas a Toyota Prius can
do 52 and this led the Union of Concerned Scientists to observe: “If everybody in the US who drives an
SUV drove a car instead, we could cut out Middle Eastern oil imports entirely.”
Why do environmentalists dislike the American Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV)?

LEARNING FROM HISTORY
?? Four (4) words with different suffixes.
Agrarian reform in Brazil is like a hungry
neighbor invading a picnic he was never
invited to – a picnic that’s been going on for
500 years, and all that time we’ve been
throwing most of the food away. Thomas
Jefferson (3rd American President, author of
the Declaration of Independence, architect,
scientist, scholar, educator, farmer, and
perhaps the most brilliant political thinker the
United States has ever produced) believed
that the small family farm was the “seedbed
of democracy.” In a letter dated 1785 he had
a few words to say about the need for
agrarian reform in France, where he was
then American Ambassador. When Jefferson
wrote to his friend James Madison (4th
American President and “Father of the
Constitution”), he didn’t know, of course, that
the French Revolution was only four years
away and the execution of Louis XVI and
Marie Antoinette, only seven – but he could
probably smell it coming.

ENGLISH CLUB BRAZIL
The English Bash (in London bash is slang for “balada”) is a
meeting held across the city of São Paulo in a variety of pubs
(Dublin, Corcorans, All Black, Finnegan’s, and others) where
everybody speaks English. The main goal is to practice the language
in an informal way, just as if you were in a foreign country – even
the waiters and waitresses take your orders in English!
Anyone interested can take part, they just need to register through the English Club Brazil
internet site. Most of the participants have at least an intermediate level of English and are in
their 30s or more. There are at least three meetings every month, and participants pay an entry
fee of R$13,00. Conducted by the educator Bill Pawley, and with a little help from Guinness,
the group talks, sings, makes friends, and even participates.
Como funciona “The English Bash” e como se tornar um de seus participantes?

In my 25 years of medical training and practice in Manhattan,
I’ve seen a wide range of diets come and go. Practically none of
them work. Of course, they may work for a few weeks or months,
but 90% of dieters regain weight within two years.
For most of my professional career, I advised my patients to
count their calories and follow a low-fat diet. When lowcarbohydrate diets returned in the mid-’90s, I dismissed them as
another fad. But a funny thing began to happen. Many of the
people who went on the modern low-carb diets lost weight, didn’t
feel deprived, and were more successful in the long term. So, I
tried the low-carbohydrate diets on a few patients because nothing
else had worked. To my surprise they did well.
Of all the diets I’ve seen over the past few decades, the
moderate-fat-lower-carbohydrate ones are the most successful.
They don’t stress how much food you eat but what kinds. Calorie
counting is not as important as carbohydrate counting.
We now have a lot of tools that can help us lose weight, and
often provide a better sense of well-being. But remember,
no matter what diet you follow, it is necessary to have a minimum
of five helpings of vegetables and fruits a day, and there is not a
diet in the world that is a substitute for that old-fashioned metabolic
jump starter called exercise.
(From Time, November 1, 1999, by Dr. Woodson C. Merrell.)
Na opinião do Dr. Woodson, que dietas são mais bem sucedidas e por quê?
