Course • June 30-July 1, 2011

Goal
The vision of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to
enhance the excellence, value, safety and efficiency of our patient care.
The goal of this conference is to review the current indications for surgical
treatment and adjuvant therapy for a number of hepatobiliary topics.
These include indications for minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery,
surgical and medical management of parasitic liver disease, the role of
ablative technologies in hepatobiliary surgery for malignancy, and optimal
multi-modality treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma. By merging
the expertise of hepatobiliary surgeons in both North and South America, the
conference is aimed at addressing the identified knowledge gaps for both
groups. At the conclusion of the conference, attendees should leave with a
higher level of understanding and competence in the diagnosis and
management of these disorders.
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to
• Appropriately apply minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgical techniques
(Knowledge, Competence, and Performance);
• Appropriately select and sequence the multiple treatment modalities
available for the management of primary and metastatic hepatobiliary
malignancies (Knowledge, Competence, and Performance);
• Appropriately implement the most up to date strategies in the
management of parasitic liver disease, thus improving patient outcomes
(Knowledge, Competence, Performance and Patient Outcomes).
Target Audience
This conference should be of interest to practicing physicians in the fields
of benign and malignant hepatobiliary care including hepatobiliary surgical
oncologists, liver transplant surgeons, medical oncologists, infectious disease
specialists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and diagnostic radiologists.
Educational Methods
• Lecture/Didactic
• Case Study
• Panel Discussions
• Question and Answer Sessions
Evaluation
A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to
comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions,
performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health
status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any
perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify
future educational topics.
Accreditation/Credit Designation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential
Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
through the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer
Center and Americas Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association and Clinica Alemana.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the
ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designates this live activity
for a maximum of 9.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim
only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
CME Certificates and
Attendance Verification Certificates
Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM or certificates documenting
attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart
the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed
evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form. Upon request, a record of
attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals
for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty
societies, or other professional associations.
