principalmcnte durante esse periodo, no qual nlio se deve dirigir
utilizando for~a total, nem cxccssivamente lemo. Urn
adequado a maciamento sera benefico nllo somentc para o
motor, mas para o carro todo (Use 6leo HD-SAE 30 AP I-SD).
Durante o amaciamemo (primeiros 1.000 km) nao se
deve exceder 4.000 RPM do motor em nenhuma circunstancia.
Mude o oleo aos 1.000 km e novamente aos, 5.000 km.
Mude as velocidades freqOentememe. nunca force o
motor com acelerac.lio constante, variando scm pre as rotac<ks
e velocidades, nlio somcnte no periodo de amaciamento, mas
a qualquer tempo.

FUEL
BREAK-IN INSTRUCTIONS
The first I .000 km of operation will determine, to a
great extent, the continued excellence ofperformance and
economy ofy our new Puma. Therefore special care should
IH given to its handling and treatment, specially during that
period, in whitch the car should notiH driven aJ f ull power
nor should It IH driven too slow. A proper break in period will
benefit not only the engine, but t he car as a whole.
During the breaking-in period (the first I.()()() km)
not exceed 4. (}()0 RPM under any drcumstonce. ChtmRt oil at
I .000 km and again at 5.000 km. U~ premium grade HD oil.
Change speeds frequently. Neveclug the engine with a heavy
throllle at low speeds, not only during the break- in period,
but at all times.

COLD ENGINE S TART
Switch the ignition-key on, making sure that the gear
shift lever is In neutral gear. It Is a advisable in cold weather
to disengoge the clutch when s tarting the engine. This
procedure will reduce the drag on the starter. Depress the
accelerator pedal two or three times immediately before turning
the starter on. Once the engine fires, release the key. Do not
use high RPM while the engine is cold, and do not warm-up
by letting it run on idle speed with vehicle stationary.
WARM ENGINE STA RT
Put the car into neutral gear and s witch the iRnirion
on. Operate the starter with the accelerator pedal slightly
depressed. As soon as the engine s tarts, release the key.
OIL CHA NGE
& ch 5.000 km change oil, using premium grade HD
(SA£ 30 in summer SA£ 20 In winter) oil. (See "Cold weather
operation ").
Required octane rating: 96 octanes (premium fuel).•
COLD WEATHER OPERATION
a. Make sure that ''Winter Oil" ofproper specification
(SA£ 20 W40) is put into the crankcase at the tim e of
the oil change. lj the car is being driven in areas
where the overage temperature is below- 15. 0 (5. o F)
use oil grade SAE 10 W, avoiding, however, to
drive the cor at high speNs for long periods when
using such grade oil and when outside temperature
is above 0. ° C (32. ° F).
NOTE
All PUMA cars are factory delivered with "summer"
oil. Change oil if cor is received during winter time.
b. Fill the windshield washer reservoir with a solution
ofJ parts of water to one part of alcohol.
c. Paint finish, chromed and aluminium pans should
be treated with appropriate preservatives.
d. Frequently check state ofcharge of the battery,
as well as the level and specific gravity ofelectroly te;
coat ballery terminals with grease.

f. Apply glycerine to rubber stripping located between
the body and the front and rear lids (including areas
between the profiled lips), doors, etc., to keep those

g. Check brake pads and lining - replace if necessary.
h. During the winter season, it will be of advantage
to cover the chromed parts with a somewhat heavier
coating ofa proven chrome preservative, as a
protection against salt and extensive exposure to
corrosive road dirt. Non-corrosive vasefine may
be used. Spray the chassis under the car with a good
anti-corrosion (for example " Shelf Ensis" J or
simi/lor), qfter having It thoroughly washed with
water.

CONTAGIROS (7)
Indica o nCunero de voltas do motor por minuto, o n6mero lido, deve ser multiplicado por 100 para se obter o resuJtado
correto (Ex. 30 x 100 = 3000 RPM).
OBS:
No contagjro, as lAmpadas de controte (19 e 2.2) acendem logo que a igni~o for ligada e devem-se apagar imediatamente ap6s
o motor pegar. Sea luz vermelha do alternador flcar acesa ou acender durante a rodagem, voc! deve parar imediatamente e verificar
se bouve ruptura da correia "V" que movimenta o alternador. Quando ela rompe, a ventoinha de arrefecimento do motor para de
funcionar. Voce deve ent.l o, instalar nova correia que acompanha seu jogo de ferramentas. Se o altemador deixar de carregar por
qualquer outro motivo, voc! deve levar o carro tAo logo seja possJvel ao servi~o autorizado antes que a bateria descarregue.
Se a luz verde da presslo do oleo (19) acender quando dirigjndo, pare imediatamente, pois isto indica que 0 fluxo de 61eo
destin ado a tubrificar o motor deve ter sido interrompido. Verifique atraves da vareta o nivel de 6leo. Se estiver a baixo da marca
inferior, deve-se adicionar o 6leo. Caso persista o problema da luz verde perrnanecer acesa, procure o servi~ autorizado o mais
rapido possivel (verifique em paralelo, a presslo de 61eo e temperatura).
INDICADOR DA PRESSAO DO OLEO (18)
Alem da luz verde para indicar o funcionamento do fluxo do 6leo lubrificante no motor, voce tern em seu Puma urn indicador
de rel6gio, cujo ponteiro acusa a pressl.o do 61eo em kg/ cm 1 • No caso do ponteiro indicar "zero" quando o motor estiver girando,
verifique o nlvel do 61eo e adicione se necessario. Verifique ainda se nlo existe algum vazam.ento. Jamais fa~ o motor rodar se
estiver sem 61eo. Caso a presslo indicar " zero" mesmo com 6leo adicionado, procure o servf~ autorizado. (A presslo minima de
funcionamento ede 1/ 2 kg/ cm1 ) .

Com a fina.Jidade de assegurar maior perfeiclo no conrrole de seu motor, existe ainda um indicador de temperatura do 61eo
do motor, cujo ponteiro indica nos numeros, a respect iva temperatura em graus centlgrados.
0 pomeiro nilo deve ultrapassar, em condie()es normais, a marca de l l0°C. Caso isto aconte~. diminua a veJocidade e
procure o servico autorizado. Uma correia soh a ou frouxa, a ign i~o fora de tempo fait a de 6leo, etc., podem resuhar no au memo

Um botlo tocalizado no Iado esquerdo, atrfls do banco e flxado na parede de fogo t.rase.i ra, eo responsavel para se efetuar
a abertura do capuz do motor. Para tanto, basta puxar o botlo fazendo ap6s,com que este retorne a posi~ antiga a fun de permitir
o fecbamento posterior do capuz.
PARA SE ABRIR 0 CAPUZ DIANTEIRO (24)
Um botclo scmelhante.utilizado para se abrir o capuz do motor, se localiza na col una da dir~. Fixado logo abaixo da trava
de dir~ao, que ao ser puxado, fm a abettura do capuz dianteiro. Este deve ser levantado manualme.n te e forcado no final de seu
curso para ficar travado em posi~o totalmente aberto. Para fecba-lo basta uma pressiio e ao tocar a carroceria deve-se pressionar
firmeme.nte com a palma da mllo, para que fique travado. 0 cabo puxador deve estar sempre em purr ado ate o fmal de seu curso.
PORTAS
As portas dos veiculos Puma devem ser fechadas com os vidros levemente abaixados, para permitir a saida dear do
babitaculo interno, e posteriormente levantados, quando entAo se processa o travamento das portas que se faz da scguinte maneira:
a) GTE- As port as esquerda e direita sao travadas com chave pelo Iado exteroo e intemamente pelo botllo.
b) GTS- As ponas direita e esqucrda sao travadas com chave pelo lado externo e intemamente girando-se o botAo no
sentido ..trava".

REAR LID RELEASE
The release knob for the rear lid is /OCQted at the left sid£ of the ret~r firewall right behind the driver's seat.
Pull to rele4se, making sure that you push knob back to its position before closing the lid.
DOORS
We suggest that you open a window slightly before closing the door. This will allow the air to escape from inside the body,
making it easier to close the door. Both doors can only be locked/rom the outside with a key.
SEATS
Your seats are built so that you can alter seat position and back rest to suit your comfort requirements. To adjust the
reclining seat you pull the lever at the side oft he seat up and adjust to required position. Return lever pressing downward, making
sure lever Is locked in this lower position. The set~ts can be adjusted back and forward by moving the release lever un and sliding
the seat into the desired position. Make sure that the lever engages properly lifter adjusting the seat so that it does not move while
you are driving.
WINDSHIELD WASHER
The windshield washers are actuated by operating the switch on the dash board. The washer reservoir is located inside the
forward luggage compartment. The reservoir should be filled with a solution o/3 parts water and one part alcohol, and tightly closed.
ADJUSTING OR REPLACING FAN Y-BELT
Thefan belt tension is correct when belt can be depressed by IOto IS mm atthecentre. Btllf in mind that new belts may stretch
a little lifter the first, kilometers ofuse, and therefore the tension should be checked lifter about 500 km, and corrected, if nece.ssary.
To adjust the belL remove the rear part ofthe pulley on the altenator. When loosening or tightening the nut, insert a screw-driver in
the slotln front halfofpulley, and support screwdriver against the upper screw at the alternatorhousing. Proper tension will be
attained by changing the proximity ofthe pulley halves in relation to each other, which can be mack by taking-off washers (thus
Increasing the tension) or adding washers (which tkcreases tension).
BATTERY
The battery ofyour PUMA is located in the right rear part of the engine compartment. The condition ofthe battery will
determine, to a great extent, a trouble-free engine start. The battery should be checked regularly for the acid level, testing of the
specific gravity ofthe electrolyte and cell voltage. Should the acid level be below rhe mark, the battery will have to be topped up with
distilled water. T.he level should be checked more often during the summer, and if you do not operate your PUMA for a prolonged
period we suggest you to toke the bauery to a Service Station to be recharged, since a long period ofnon-use will make the botlery
discharge itself and this may cause permanent damage to it.
CARE OF THE BATTERY
I. Keep the vent-caps tight'2. Keep the terminals and cable clamps clean. Coating these with terminal grease orpetroleum jelly is a
good measure and will prevent oxydation and corrosion ..J. Do not/eave battery loose. 4. Ifyou spill the electrolyte, rinse-off
immediately with a solution of baking soda.
CARBURETO RS AND AIR FILTERS

regulotM. Have your authorized dealer check and regulate carburetors when you notice the moror is not runing up to par. Also do

travel in sandy areas.

AR QUENTE E FRIO (6,9,16,10 e Jl)
Uma entrada dear logo acima do capuz dianteiro, permite que oar frio penetre para dentro da carroceria, como carro em
movimento, di redonando-o ao para-brisa, intemamente pel as entradas 6 e 9, logo acima do painel de instrumento; is to entrctanto
s6 ocorre quando os botOes de controle 16 e 20 estao total mente puxados.
Caso baja necessidade de se utilizar oar quente, basta acionar esses mesmos botOes no sentido in verso e abrir oar quente
at raves do acionamento da alavanca 32 1ocalizada a direita d o freio manual, no fim do console.
Em dias chuvosos, com necessidade de se dirigir com os vidros fechados o desembacame oto do vidro para-brisa pode ocorrer
com a entrada dear frio ou quente, dependendo da velocidade alingida pelo veiculo. Ambos tem a~o eficiente.

BATERIA
A bateria de seu Puma es t A localizada por baixo da tampa do motor l\ direita. Seu cuidado e lnspecao permanente evitara
falhas em todo o sistema eletrico do seu carro. Para tanto, verifique regularmente o nivel de solu~ao da bateria e caso e~teja a baixo
do normal s6 adicione agua destilada.
Em casos de Iongo periodo sem uso do carro, a bate ria deve ser retirada para recarga e posterior retorno ao velcuJo.
CARBURADORES E FILTROS DE AR

necessitam estar sempre bern regulados para que o rendimento seja o mais econ8mico possivel. Peca para o seu servico autorizado,

trocar os elementos do filtro dear dos carburadores a cada 10.000 km no maximo, e em menor espa~o de quilometragem seesta for

Puma is fully guaranteed in accordance with the terms listed under the heading GUARANTEE at the end of this manual.
Below we explain what the guarantee means to you, the owner ofa new PUMA.
Within the guarantee are free inspections at 1,000 and 5,000 km which if not performed as specified may invalidate the
guarantee.
Any ports which become defective within 6 (six) months or 10,000 km, as determined by an authorized PUMA or VW
dealer, are for the account of PUMA or VW. (The VW mechanical components are guaranteed by Volkswagen ofBrazil).
Not all repairs, adjustments and replacements are the result ofdejects in material or workmanship. There are circumstances
beyond the control ofthe mamifacturer that might make a visit to a service station necessary. These depend mainly on where you
drive and how your drive. They would include weather and atmospheric conditions, wzrying road surfaces, individual driving habits
and vehicle usage.
For example you are required to pay thejollowing:
Maintenance and lubrication services.
Oil and grease used qfter repairs· engine, front axle, etc.
Front wheel alignment and wheel balancing -the frequency ofsuch service depends on driving conditions such as rapid stops
and stans, tire skidding, hilling potholes and curbs, etc.
Mechanical adjustment • Including brake, dutch, door locks· is required as a mauer of normal operation ofa motor
vehicle. This protects you against expensive replacements.
Brake and clutch linings- are directly affected by driving habits and use.
The replacement of these linings and the reconditioning of brake drums should be performed whenever necessary.
Spark plugs and ignition points are subject to wear. Periodic replacem ents ensure you of maximum engine performance and
gasoline economy.
Wiper blades -life expectancy will vary widely, depending on climatic conditions and extent of use.
Light bulbs and fuses are service items.
Paint, chrome and trim are affected by normal wear and exposure. Proper care of these items can add to their appearance
and durability. Tires, tubes and batteries, etc...

CAPOTA DE LONA(Fecho tipo carrapicho)
Para abrir, sohe primeiramente todos os laterais de fixa~~o e liberte as alavancas dos dois fechos do cajado dianteiro do
para-brisas, abaixo dos dois para-sois- Depois de completameme livres. puxe para tras a lona e as respectivas articula~oes,
dobrando-as gradativamente ate situa-las inteiramente no habitaculo correspodeme, atras dos bancos. Devc-se entretanto evitar
que as aniculacoes possam captar o tecido da capota durante a dobragem . Coloque enrao a capa ou envelope que cobre este
sistema de capota para melhor prote~o fixando-a nos bot<>es correspondentes.
Para fechar. remova a capa protetora c va levamando a capota com suas aniculac;Oes ate o para-brisas. Encaixe os pinos
nos fechos do cajado nos seus respectivos lugares e exer~a a pressclo de travamcnto de ambos. A fim de verificar o bom
fechamento da capoia, suba e desca os vidros laterais das porras e em scguida aperte e feche todos os fechos laterais e traseiros
da capota.
A tonga vida do material desta capota dependera dos cuidados que a ela se puder dedicar, mantcndo-a sempre limpa e
seca e utilizando-se para tanto a limpeza com sabao de c6co.
Aconselhamos ainda a aplica~o do llquido Oxford lift ACM que deve ser aplicado ap6s a lavagem e permite prote~o
permanente ao vynil.
PUMA GIS-SPIDER
All 1he technical charoclerislics and recommendolions perlaining to the model GTE also apply to 1he GTS. 1he only
difference being the vinyl plastic top.
To open, first strip away the "velcro" grip closure (type of zipper) on the sides, 1he11 free the levers of lhe two devices
locking the top to the windshield. When completely free. slowly fold back 1he top until it fits into the space provided behind
the seats.
Fold carefUlly~ preventing metal of the lop f rame from cutting the plastic material. When ;, place cover I he top with the
protector and secure with the pressure buuons and "velcro" closure.
To open, remove the protective cover and draw the top forward to the windshield. Fit the pins ofI he two locks into their
respective receptors on the windshield and close.
To verify correct fit, raise and lower lire side windows. Complete by joining the ''velcro "side closures.
By maintaining the rop clean and dry you will prolong the life of the top.
From time to time, especially after washing the cor, on application ofliquid Oxford lift A CM or simi/or should be
applied as added protection to tire vinyl.

GUARANTEE ON NEW PUMA VEHICLES
PUMA JNDOSTRIA DE fiE!CULOS S/A guarantees this vehicle against defects in workmanship and materia/for a period
of 6 (six) months or 10,000 (ten thousand) kilometers, whichever occurs first. The guarantee only applies to original parts and
accessories delivered with the car at time ofsale.
The guarantee is limited to the replacement or repair ofsuch parts proved to have been dt/ect fve in material or workmanship,
confirmed by an authorized Puma dealer/distributor. All parts which have been replaced shall become the property of PUMA .

but only those specific parts j udged defective.
The labor charge for the service effected In compliance with this g uarantee will be borne by the PUMA dealer.

a) light bulbs, ingnition points, fuses, spark plugs, belts and glass which become defective after the 500 km inspection.
b) tires, tubes, radios, batteries are the responsibility ofthe respective manufacturers.
c) normal wear and tear, damage brought about by negligent or improper handling. damage due to storage or corrosion,
accidents, non-compliance with the instructions contained in this manual and/or conditions beyond our control.
The guarantef! does not apply to vechicles that have not been delivered for inspection at the designated I, 000 and 5, 000 km.

make such changes on previously purchased vehicles.
PUMA INDOSTRLA DE V£/CULOS S/A. shall not be responsible for any claims/or indemnification of whatever origin
or cause, direct or indirect arising from any defective part or assembly.
The guarantee is subject to thefo/Jowing conditions:
a) That claim be made immediately to any authorized Puma dealer/distributor.
b) That replacement parts or assemblies be insta/Jed only by authorized dealers or distributor.
c) That the period ofguarantee stipulated in the first paragraph of this guarantee has not expired.
The guarantee is fully discharged:
a) When the period ofguarantee has expired.
b) At any time:
I) lithe seal of the speedometer cable has been tapered with at any point.
2) if modifications or changes have been made without authorization ofPuma dealer/distributor.
