The possessive case (-'s/ -')
We use the possessive structure -'s mostly for people, animals or countries:
-'s: people
Alan is Mary Lory's son-in-law.
-'s: animals
This is the bird's favourite hat.
-'s: countries
England's museums
Beware when to use -'s or -':
singular noun + -'s
Chad's pet
Alan's wife
plural noun + -'
the babies' names (= their names – two or more babies)
the friends' decision (= their decision – two or more friends)
plural noun not ending in -s (men/ women/ children/ people) + -'s
the children's story
people's favourite
singular noun ending in -s + -'/-'s (more common)
Sue is Brian Reeves's girlfriend.
more than one noun: -'s after the last noun
Susan is Alfred and Mary Brice's daughter.
